The Talent Show: Jessica Lucas

Oh, so you thought The Talent Show would be all about Amber Heard this week, right? I don't blame you for thinking that, since everyone knows how I feel about the future...*grumble*...Mrs. Johnny friggin' Depp, plus she has 3 Days to Kill out this week. But I've given Heard enough love here on the site, so let's take a look another actress who is definitely on the rise.

We've been seeing a lot from Jessica Lucas lately, having seen her in both That Awkward Moment and this week's Pompeii this year alone. In one she stomps all over poor Michael B. Jordan's heart, in the other she's a barely-clothed slave fleeing an erupting volcano. That shows great emotional range, right? Who cares? She's smokin' hot in everything, whether she's running away from monsters in Cloverfield or trying to survive the Evil Dead. Hopefully she'll get a chance to put that theatre background to good use in something juicy at some point, but for now I'm perfectly fine with her as eye candy.

Review: 'That Awkward Moment' Starring Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, and Miles Teller

Nothing good comes after the word "so", especially when it's a woman saying it. That seems to be the entire premise behind That Awkward Moment, a relationship comedy about dudes who, you'll be surprised to learn, have serious commitment issues. Pausing here to let the shock wash over you. So even though the film isn't telling us anything new in its rather juvenile outlook on the way men and women relate it's fortunate enough to be led by the trio of Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, and Miles Teller, who go a long way in making it watchable and at times even enjoyable.

Jason (Efron) and Daniel (Teller) are a pair of lovable, womanizing jerks living a life of one-night-stands and booty calls in Manhattan, until their best bud Mike (Jordan) is suddenly thrust back into the dating scene when his wife (Jessica Lucas) reveals she's been cheating on him with a guy who looks like Morris Chestnut. Why Morris Chestnut? Because all the ladies love him, and so does writer/director Tom Gormican who labors to turn his name into one of the film's many attempted catch phrases. With all three back out there, they make a promise to stay single and enjoy just being dudes and building their "roster" of women to score with until the inevitable question "So...what are we doing here?" comes up. Then it's time to kick them to the curb and move on. Chivalrous gentlemen they aren't; underneath their fashion mag outfits and breezy responsibility-free existence is a bunch of sexist pigs.

Of course, it's just as they make this pact of bachelorhood that that the perfect women enter their lives. For Jason it's Ellie (Imogen Poots) who puts the hooks into him, although things get off to a rocky start. After making her another notch on his bedpost, Jason suspects she's a high-class hooker and bails, only to have her show up at the publishing house he (barely) works at. Oops. Daniel falls for Chelsea (Breathe In's talented Mackenzie Davis, kind of wasted here), his best girl friend who often plays his wingman...wingwoman (?) when on the prowl. And Mikey soon falls back into bed with his wife in an attempt to patch things up. Not that any of these women are worth revealing their true feelings and breaking the pact. Not only does that show how little value placed on the ladies, but it takes the "guy code" to levels only seen in movies just like this.

But for all of the wrong messages sent and obvious plotting, That Awkward Moment does have a solid ear for funny dialogue and features a trio of easy lead performances. Teller, Jordan, and Efron are immensely likable on their own and they are downright potent as a trio, capable of making you forget every other problem the film has. The best moments come when they are all together, just hanging out in what appear to be ad-libbed riffs on Chestnut, orange penises, and taking a dump in a friend's house. One memorable scene has the guys, after downing some Viagra, being forced to go horizontal in order to pee in a toilet. Efron and Poots share little in the way of chemistry, and she seems especially out of place here. The film requires Ellie to be more quirky, but Poots is too refined of an actress for that and so she's just sort of unimpressive. Jordan gets the meatiest role of all, and the Fruitvale Stationbreakout finds something true in the emotional limbo Mike is trapped in. Teller is the jokester of the group and his presence comes naturally. He shares some nice moments with Davis, pulling from his romantic experience in a deeper relationship film like The Spectacular Now.

Of course the stakes are mighty low here, lower than the film's ambitions. When Jason screws up mightily and hurts Ellie in a way few women would easily forgive, there's never any doubt how things will turn out, or how simply everything will be resolved. Much like its leading guys, That Awkward Momentisn't built to commit to that level of emotional attachment. Consider it a date movie guys can attend without wanting to scream bloody murder.

Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, and Miles Teller in Red Band Trailer for 'That Awkward Moment'

You'll be hard-pressed to find three more likable dudes on screen than Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, and Zac Efron, and for the ladies they make pretty good eye candy. But do we buy them as best friends trying to match the "hug it out, bro" vibe of Entourage or last summer's This is the End? The producers behind That Awkward Moment (formerly Are We Officially Dating?) certainly hope so, and they've just released a red band trailer to try and convince you these guys are the best of buds.

While there isn't much here worthy of the mature rating, the film does show Teller, Jordan, and Efron as three relationship-hating guys in New York City who make a vow to stay single. But all of that gets tossed out the window when they start meeting the perfect women. It looks like a more generic, lesser take on a similar story idea explored in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Don Jon, and what's more it doesn't provide much in the way of laughs outside of a bad Viagra joke and a worse dildo joke.

Despite the cool cast, this is clearly just another romantic comedy, in case that happy pop music score didn't clue you in. Directed by Tom Gormican and co-starring Jessica Lucas, Josh Pais, and Emily Meade, That Awkward Moment opens January 31st 2014, which sounds just about right.

Sure Shots: Kaya Scodelario; Luke Evans; Jessica Lucas

* Clearly an actress on the rise, Kaya Scodelario has been drawing attention not by appearing in big blockbusters, but by flexing her dramatic muscles. After starring in Andrea Arnold's ballsy adaptation of Wuthering Heights, she turned at Sundance for Emmanuel and the Truth About Fishes. But Hollywood beckons, and director Wes Ball recently tweeted that Scodelario was on board for his big screen version of The Maze Runner. Based on the YA novel by James Dashner, the story sci-fi story follows Thomas, who wakes up with no memory of his past life. Welcomed into an area called The Glade, he joins a community of 60 or so young boys who call themselves Gladers, and have been trying for two years in a giant maze. Scodelario will play Theresa, Thomas' best friend and the only female Glader. The Maze Runner hits theaters next Valentine's Day.

* Once with Sam Worthington set to star and Alex Proyas lined up as director, Dracula Year Zero has been brewing over at Universal for a long time. Last year Gary Shore stepped in to helm the picture, reportedly an origin story about the real life Prince Vlad the Impaler, mixing in mythology to tell the story of his transformation into the first vampire. After getting a look at his skills in Fast & Furious 6, the studio has chosen Luke Evans to lead the bloodthirsty pic, which now simply goes by Dracula. The hope is to have cameras rolling later this year for a likely release in 2014.[THR]

* It's been a banner week for Evil Dead co-star, Jessica Lucas. Not only did the horror scare up a huge debut at the box office, but now she's landed a role in Paul W.S. Anderson's upcoming historical disaster film, Pompeii. Taking place during  the famous eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that leveled the city, the story follows a slave who must race to save the woman he loves and his gladiator best friend.  Emily Browning, Kit Harington, Jared Harris, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Kiefer Sutherland star, with Lucas playing a personal slave.

Watch out for the mirror! New clip from Fede Alvarez's 'Evil Dead'

There's been more talk about Sam Raimi's Evil Dead now than ever before, and only some of it has to do with all of the hype surrounding potential sequels of his original, Bruce Campbell-led trilogy. A good deal of the buzz is about Fede Alvarez's remake, which many looked upon with skepticism when it was first announced, but now has earned rave reviews from those lucky enough to catch it early.

With a marketing campaign proudly boasting this would be the scariest movie you'll ever see, a new clip has emerged to give you just a small taste of the horrors we're all in store for. The brief scene features a traumatized Jessica Lucas, and it involves a mirror that seems to have a mind of its own. Have mirrors ever been a good thing in movies like this?

Starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Elizabeth Blackmore, Evil Dead hits theaters on April 5th.

Sure Shots: 'A Good Day to Die Hard'; Jessica Lucas; Louis C.K.

* The muthafucka is back! As in "Yippee Ki-Yay muthafucka!!" After keeping us in suspense for awhile, A Good Day to Die Hard will officially be rated 'R', which means John McClane(Bruce Willis) and his son Jack(Jai Courtney) can let the F-Bombs fly while they're ripping through a bunch of Russian thugs. We'll watch them tear some shit up on February 14th.

* Jessica Lucas, late of CW's Melrose Place reboot, has replaced Deborah Ann Woll in Are We Officially Dating? The Zac Efron-led romantic comedy also stars Imogen Poots and Michael B. Joran, and follows three male friends in NYC who make a pact to stay single just as they each fall in love. Lucas will play Vera, the unfaithful wife of Jordan's character. Dammit, I was really digging that Woll/Jordan combination, too. Oh well. The film is written and directed by Tom Gormican. [Deadline]

* Louis C.K.'s hit FX series, Louie, may be taking a bit of break until 2014, but he's found a high-profile gig that puts him in some awesome company. He's landed a key role in David O. Russell's next film, formerly titled American Bullshit. Already with Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, and Christian Bale on board, the film tells the true story of Abscam scandal of the 1980s, which had a con artist and his mistress working with the feds to bust corrupt politicians. No word on who C.K. will be playing, but it's said to be important. Production begins next month, and hopefully by then it will have a real title. [THR]

The 'Evil Dead' remake adds 'Melrose Place' star Jessica Lucas

After a flurry of casting in the wake of Lily Collins' departure, it's been pretty quiet lately on the Evil Dead remake front. So far the Fede Alvarez directed, Sam Raimi produced horror has stuck to a young, up 'n coming group of actors to make up the friends who will be tormented by legions of the undead. Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Jane Levy are already set, and now two more figure into the equation.

Jessica Lucas, late of the revived Melrose Place series, is the latest to join the cast. Her biggest screen role came as part of 2008's Cloverfield, but most recently she had the misfortune of appearing in Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. Hey, she's gotta pay the bills, right?  She'll be joined by Elizabeth Blackmore, an actress who has appeared mostly in Australian stuff.

Diablo Cody wrote the latest draft of the script, which Alvarez co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The buzz for this has died down considerably lately, but I'm sure it'll pick back up by the time it opens in April 2013. [THR]
