Joel Edgerton, Joe Manganiello, Jon Bernthal Rumored for 'Suicide Squad'; Gary Sinise Joins Cast

Even though it doesn't come out until 2016, Suicide Squad is taken all the attention away from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice lately. With Tom Hardy having dropped out, and Jake Gyllenhaal having passed on the chance to replace him in the role of Rick Flag, the cast is still being pieced together. But as it looks like Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto are going to be the film's leads, Warner Bros. may have figured out it's time to seek a lesser known actor.

According to Cinemablend's source, Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal are being considered for the Rick Flag role. Bernthal worked with Ayer on the WWII tank flick Fury, and he's a guy who can fit into a supporting role and make something memorable out of it. The same can be said of Edgerton who has starred in some big films, such as The Great Gatsby, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Warrior (alongside Tom Hardy) but isn't necessarily a huge name who will outshine others. The Flag role is interesting because he's basically the team leader when the antivillain squad is thrown into a mission, but that's not likely to be what he'll be doing in the movie.

Meanwhile, it looks like Gary Sinise has a part in the film but the exact role is up for debate. Latino Review had a scoop that Sinise would be playing the villain General Elling, one of the Atom's top villains, but Cinemablend's source suggests he could be someone else. They also claim that Joe Manganiello could be up for the role of Deathstroke, arguably the toughest villain in the DC Universe.

Suicide Squad opens August 5th 2016.

Elizabeth Banks Joins 'Magic Mike XXL' as Full Cast and Plot Revealed

Over the last couple of weeks there has been a lot of news on who is in and who is out of Magic Mike XXL. Matthew McConaughey sadly won't be returning, but what about Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash, and Joe Manganiello? Turns out they'll all be be back, along with Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Igleasias, while Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, and Michael Strahan (!?!?) will be coming aboard. They'll be joining the previously announced Jada Pinkett Smith, Amber Heard, and Andie MacDowell, with Channing Tatum obviously returning to the film he's again co-writing with Reid Carolin. What, no Alex Pettyfer?

Along with that announcement, Warner Bros. has revealed the first real plot details, confirming it as a road trip movie. The story will take place three years after the last film when Mike gave up stripping for good, and it looks like his boys are ready to do the same.

"Magic Mike XXL" finds the remaining Kings of Tampa ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.

Directed by Greg Jacobs, Magic Mike XXL opens July 1st 2015.

Review: 'La Bare' Directed by Joe Manganiello

This has been a pretty good week for True Blood beefcake Joe Manganiello. Only a couple of days ago he was voted the hottest bachelor of the year by People Magazine, and today sees the release of his passion project and directorial debut, La Bare. It's a film inspired by what he learned while starring in the surprisingly successful stripper comedy, Magic Mike, in which he played the penis pump-wielding "Big Dick" Richie, and will again in the sequel, Magic Mike XXL. La Bare superficially but enjoyably pulls back the curtain on the realities and gender politics of the male stripping profession, and works as an interesting and funny fact-based companion piece.

La Bare is the Dallas nightclub of some renown, known for their colorful performances and of course ripped, perfectly manicured dancers of various ages, colors, and dreams. Running the show is veteran dancer Randy "Master Blaster" Ricks, a local legend with a perfect physical regiment that has kept him going strong for three decades. And shouldn't he? He can clear $300 in a few minutes on a good day, and he gets to serve as a father figure to the youngsters. Some of the others have less interest in hanging around quite so long, but you won't find their aspirations especially intriguing.

Where the film succeeds is in exploring the gender dynamics of a profession many see as dominated by females. But the guys rightly point out that male customers aren't exactly looking for a show, they just want to see hot women. Ladies, on the other hand, come for the entertainment and invest in their favorite dancers emotionally. These men don't feel objectification, they are instead treated as local heroes and celebrities, and they more than embrace the label. In fact, it seems to drive them further into perfecting their craft, even those who admit to not being able to "dance for shit". The showmanship and body sculpting is what keeps their pants full of cash. Most of the men are respectful to their clientele, but others considerably less so. An extended sequence with the club's promiscuous DJ doesn't do anybody any favors, but Manganiello is quick to show the best in everyone else.

There are plenty of gyrating bodies, chiseled abs, and screaming ladies but Manganiello keeps things simple with an engaging series of interviews that reveal the impact Magic Mike has had on the business. A fresh-faced youngster nicknamed "Channing" was inspired by the film to get into stripping. The mood grows somber for too long as the guys reminisce about a murdered comrade, Reuben "Angelo" Riguero, who they refer to as "the real Magic Mike". The reverence Manganiello has for these men is clear but it also prevents him from treading into the darker territory that a fictional film dared to. La Bare is a crowd-pleasing, skin deep look at those who bare skin for a living, and don't be surprised if Manganiello revisits their world again in the future.
 Rating: 3 out of 5

Trav's Tip: For more on Le Bare and a lot more, check out my interview with Joe Manganiello here! The film is now playing exclusively at the Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market.

Interview: Joe Manganiello Talks Male Stripper Doc 'La Bare', 'True Blood', and Why He Wasn't in 'Man of Steel'

What many may not know about Joe Manganiello, since they're probably too busy staring at his abs on True Blood or in his role as "Big Dick" in Magic Mike, is that he's a classically trained actor with a longstanding goal of being a director. Those dreams were finally achieved with La Bare, a documentary inspired by his experiences researching for and starring in Magic Mike. The film gives us a backstage look at the lives of male strippers at the world famous La Bare nightclub in Dallas, and attempts to break down some of the facades about the business and the people in it. Manganiello directed every frame and financed the picture fully to show his commitment, and one of the things he found is that Magic Mike was just as much an influence on the dancers as they were on it.

I had a chance to talk with Manganiello about La Bare, what drove him to choose this subject for his directorial debut, and what he learned about the profession's true nature.  He also discusses why he didn't get the Superman role in Man of Steel, the future of True Blood and plans for after the show concludes.

La Bare opens on Friday, July 4th exclusively at the Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market.

Joe Manganiello will 'Tumbledown'; Scott Caan to 'Rock the Kasbah'; Jonny Weston Joins 'Taken 3'

* Joe Manganiello, who can be seen right now in Sabotage and will return for Magic Mike XXL, has joined the cast of Tumbledown as production gets moving. He joins Rebecca Hall, Jason Sudeikis, and the newly-cast Dianna Agron (The Family), Griffin Dunne, Richard Masur, and Blythe Danner in the story of a widow struggling to write a biography about her late husband, a famous musician. That changes when she meets a brash New York academic with a different take on her husband's life and death. The unlikely pair must collaborate to craft the famous singer’s story and begin to write the next chapter in their lives together. Sean Mewshew is directing.

* With Shia LaBeouf making a public spectacle out of his need for privacy, the actor left the Barry Levinson comedy, Rock the Kasbah. And it didn't take long for him to be replaced, as Variety reports Scott Caan has joined the all-star ensemble. Bill Murray plays a washed up rock music manager stranded in Kabul, who discovers a new talent on the reality competition show, Afghan Star. Zooey Deschanel, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, and Bruce Willis co-star.

* With Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, and Famke Janssen set to get taken again in Taken 3, some new blood has come aboard with the addition of Jonny Weston. He got his start in the surf drama Chasing Mavericks and will be seen next year in the Michael Bay-produced time travel film Project Almanac. Taken 3 opens next year on January 9th.

'Magic Mike' Sequel Lands Director and Awesome New Title

We knew the ladies loved Channing Tatum, especially shirtless gyrating Channing Tatum, but few would have expected them to stuff Magic Mike with 167 million dollar bills. With that kind of money, a sequel has been talked about with Tatum possibly taking over as director of the stripper dramedy. But it looks like that job will go to someone else familiar with the budding franchise.

The Playlist has learned that Greg Jacobs will direct the sequel, with the title revealed as Magic Mike XXL. Jacobs has close ties to the prior film, serving as producer and first AD. He's worked for much of his career with Steven Soderbergh, who also produced Magic Mike. He also directed Criminal and the little-seen Emily Blunt horror, Wind Chill.

As for the story, we've heard previously that it would be more of a road trip movie with Tatum again using his early stripping career as the basis. It's unclear who from the original cast will return, but one who definitely expects to be back as Joe Manganiello, who played *ahem* Big Dick Richie. Talking with Collider, Manganiello said that plans are for filming to begin later in the fall...

Manganiello: “Yeah, it’s gonna happen this fall. I think they’re going to announce it soon. It’s crazy. I didn’t think that would be my first franchise. I never thought that would ever be the direction of my career. But that said, it’s just proof that I don’t know best, all the time. It was the most fun I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to get back in and mix it up with those guys.”

Review: 'Sabotage' Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger

To put it bluntly, Arnold Schwarzenegger's post-politics comeback has been one Predator-sized flop. What has he really accomplished other than trampling over his former glory as an iconic action hero? Not even joining the equally grizzled stars of The Expendables could help, and the solo films he's starred in have been pretty embarrassing. Bet you already forgot Escape Planand that was barely six months ago. What Arnold needed, and quite badly, was to stop trading on his past (uh oh Terminator fans) and be a different type of bad ass. Fortunately, that's when End of Watch director David Ayer came calling with Sabotage, simply Schwarzenegger's best film in years.

Ayer has made a living off gritty cop thrillers, usually focusing on corruption and brotherhood, and Sabotage is no different. It allows for Schwarzenegger to be the leader of a group that aren't just a bunch of muscle-bound stereotypes, but characters with some pretty serious flaws. He plays John "Breacher" Wharton, the head gorilla in a special DEA unit full of rowdy hair-trigger animals. Mireille Enos, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway, Joe Manganiello, Max Martini, Sam Worthington, and Kevin Vance make up his rough 'n tumble squad who specialize in vulgarity and gunning down drug cartels. During one particularly bloody raid, Breacher's unit makes away with a cool $10M in cash, quite literally flushing it down the toilet. But when they come back to claim it, the money is nowhere to be found. All they've got to show for the theft is the federal government breathing down their necks and a lengthy suspension.

Well, they do get one more thing: dead. Pretty soon after reforming, members of the team start dropping like flies. Breacher calls it an "occupational hazard" but when guys are having their entire homes plowed under by trains, or getting gutted like a fish and nailed to the ceiling, it's clear somebody is sending a message. Already on edge, the unit begins to turn on one another as they try to sort out who the bad guys are and if there's a traitor in their close-knit family.  Olivia Williams plays a dogged federal agent assigned to the case, and when she's not making off-color jokes with her partner (Harold Perrineau) she's trying to figure out what Breacher's team is hiding.

Ayer piles up red herrings quicker than the bullets and bodies stack up, and for the most part the mystery remains at barrel's length, throughout. You might be surprised to learn the story is based on an Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None, and it walks the line between whodunit and brutal action flick pretty well until the plot starts to unravel towards the end. While the less said about it the better, there's a major twist surrounding a character's deeply personal motivation that casts everything in a new light. It also serves to needlessly burden a film that wasn't built on the sturdiest of legs, and we see in the rushed shoot-out finale an attempt to just wrap things up neatly. Stacks of dismembered and splattered bodies, along with a healthy amount of torture, should fend off anyone with a nervous stomach. Safe to say this is the most violent film Schwarzenegger has ever been a part of, although it's not nearly as torturous as Jingle All the Way.

Mainly it's good to see Schwarzenegger as an authoritative, deeply intelligent and intimidating character; playing his age without making light of it. He gets a lot of help from a great supporting cast, better than a movie like this would normally bother to assemble. Enos is deadly as a squirrelly, drug-addicted member of Breacher's team who may be more trouble than her ass-kicking and smart mouth are worth. The mark of a great director is getting the best out of his actors, and Ayer has invigorated Schwarzenegger in a way we haven't seen in a long time. Hopefully we see him take on more films like Sabotage rather than trying to recreate the past.

Red Band Trailer for 'Sabotage' Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger

We've seen plenty of trailers for David Ayer's cop thriller, Sabotage, and the emphasis has been on Arnold Schwarzenegger and the intense action. While that's still prevalent in this new red band footage, there's more of an emphasis on the moral dilemma faced by his character as the walls close in around him.

Schwarzenegger plays the head of a DEA task force charged with taking down a ruthless drug cartel. When millions of dollars in cash goes missing after the bust, his team starts disappearing one-by-one, and we see that his family also become a target. This continues to look like the most promising Schwarzenegger film since his return, and he's surrounded by a great cast hat includes Mireille Enos, Terrence Howard, Sam Worthington, Olivia Williams, Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway, and Harold Perrineau.

Sabotage hits theaters March 28th.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Confronts Joe Manganiello in New 'Sabotage' Clip

So far all of the trailers and promos for Sabotage suggest this may be the first Arnold Schwarzenegger film worth getting hyped for in a long time. Directed and co-written by End of Watch's David Ayer, it looks like the sort of no-nonsense cop flick the director has always been successful with (he also wrote Training Day), and maybe he can help Arnie get back on track.

A new clip has been released, coming just a few days after a very promising UK trailer hit the web. Schwarzenegger leads a DEA task force that robbed a drug cartel for millions, only to get picked off one-by-one in the following days. In this clip we see a confrontation between Schwarzenegger and Joe Manganiello over "occupational hazards", like getting murdered and stuff. Never mind that Manganiello would probably hurl the Governator into the next county if this were real, it's still a pretty cool, intense piece of footage. It also gives us a look at the starry supporting cast that includes Sam Worthington, Mireille Enos, and Terrence Howard.

Sabotage locks and loads on March 28th.

New Bullet-Riddled Trailer and Clip from 'Sabotage' with Arnold Schwarzenegger

The combination of writer/director David Ayer and Arnold Schwarzenegger holds a lot of potential. Ayer is coming off his most successful cop flick yet in End of Watch, one that showed he has quite a few tricks up his sleeve. Schwarzenegger is in desperate need of a hit film that doesn't have the word 'Expendables' in the title, and perhaps the best thing for him to do is take on a no-frills thriller like Sabotage, from a director who specializes in them.

A new UK trailer and red band clip have been released, and if we've got people counting the number of F-Bombs in The Wolf of Wall Street, maybe we can get someone to count the number of spent bullets in Sabotage. Schwarzenegger stars as the head of an elite DEA unit that walks way from a successful drug cartel raid with millions in cash. But just as they think they've gotten away with it, their members start getting picked off one-by-one. Leave the kids at home for this one.

Also starring Mireille Enos, Olivia Williams, Joe Manganiello, Terrence Howard, Sam Worthington, Harold Perrineau, Max Martini, and Josh Holloway, Sabotage opens March 28th.

New Red Band Trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Sabotage'

Nothing's quite been working out for Arnold Schwarzenegger of late. He teams up with Sylvester Stallone in Escape Plan and nobody shows up; he taps into his glory days with The Last Stand and audiences stay away in droves. Then when he agrees to come back for a Terminator reboot everybody asks if he's too old. So what's the former Governator to do? Drop all the baggage and get to a down 'n dirty action flick like Sabotage.

A new red band trailer for the film has been released, and one can see why it's been rated 'R' for "strong bloody violence". Believe it or not this was based on an Agatha Christie novel (And Then There Were None), Schwarzenegger stars alongside a cornrowed Joe Manganiello, Terrence Howard, Mireille Enos, Olivia Williams, Josh Holloway, Max Martini, Sam Worthington, and Harold Perrineau as the leader of an elite DEA unit who steal millions from a drug cartel during a bust. Thinking they've gotten away with the crime, they soon find themselves getting picked off one-by-one.

This one looks pretty straight-forward and exactly the sort of lean action film Schwarzenegger should be doing nowadays. Directed by David Ayer, Sabotage opens March 28th.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is Out to Destroy in New 'Sabotage' Trailer

After years of making movies about corrupt cops, David Ayer struck gold with End of Watch, which wasn't so much about corruption as it was about loyalty and friendship between partners. It was a great film, and Ayer is touching upon similar themes in his latest, Sabotage, although with a lot more explosions and 100% more Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger is backed by an impressive ensemble from top to bottom: Joe Manganiello, Mireille Enos, Terrence Howard, Olivia Williams, Martin Donovan, Sam Worthington, Harold Perrineau, and Max Martini, in a story about an elite DEA task force that robs a cartel safe house for $10M. Just when they think all is clear, they start getting picked off one-by-one. So the corrupt cop angle is there, as well, but this one is obviously more of a straight-arrow action movie.

Sabotage opens on April 11th.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Packs Tons of Guns in First 'Sabotage' Trailer

Let's just say that Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a difficult time getting back into the groove ever since his return to acting. Outside of his appearances in The Expendables, audiences have basically shunned other flicks like The Last Stand and Escape Plan, avoiding them like they were the video tape in The Ring or something. But that's not going to stop him from taking another shot at a hit, and he's going to get a lot of help doing just that in Sabotage.

After a handful of new photos emerged yesterday, the first trailer for Sabotage (formerly Breacher, Ten)  has been released and it packs quite an ensemble. Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch), the film co-stars Josh Holloway, Sam Worthington,Terrence Howard, Max Martini, Mireille Enos, Harold Perrineau, Olivia Williams, and Joe Manganiello in the story of a DEA task force that steals $10M from a recent drug cartel bust. The team think they're in the clear until each starts getting picked off one-by-one by a mysterious assassin.

It doesn't look too much different than everything else Arnie has been doing lately, but maybe having so much talent around him will change his luck. Sabotage kicks down the door April 11th 2014.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is Armed to the Teeth in New 'Sabotage' Photos

First it was titled Breacher, then it was Ten, and now the bland titles for Arnold Schwarzenegger's next film continues with Sabotage. >yawn<  USA Today has dropped a handful of new images from the gun-crazy flick, and looking at them you might be surprised to learn it's loosely (like EXTREMELY loose) based on Agatha Christie's novel And Then There Were None.

Written and directed by David Ayer (End of Watch), the film centers on an elite DEA task that steals millions of dollars in cash from a drug cartel. Just when they think they've gotten away scott-free, the agents start being picked off one by one. Sam Worthington, Mireille Enos, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Olivia Williams, Josh Holloway, Max Martini, and Joe Manganiello co-star.

Sabotage hits theaters April 11th 2014.

Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Joe Manganiello Up for Batman Role in 'Superman vs. Batman'

Only a day ago a rumor surfaced that Warner Bros. was seeking an older actor, possibly in his 40s, to play a "grizzled veteran" Bruce Wayne in Zack Snyder's Superman vs. Batman movie. That led to what one would expect, a ton of speculation, dream casting, and even greater rumors. Whoever dons the cape and cowl of Batman is a major decision for the studio because the choice they make is likely to be around for a long time, through the dark knight's solo films and into the inevitable Justice League.

Six names have emerged as contenders for the Batman role according to THR, and they seem to confirm an older actor is being sought. Leading the way as the apparent frontrunner is Josh Brolin, who coincidentally has been at the top of many fan castings for the character, and has a number of connections to the studio and The Dark Knight Returns author Frank Miller, whose graphic novel inspired this particular story. Brolin has worked with WB on Gangster Squad and the unfortunate Jonah Hex, and he's set to star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which is based on Miller's comic book. If Brolin is the lead choice WB won't admit to it, dismissing the rumors because casting has yet to begin. Thanks to Poumap at DeviantArt for that image of Bat-Brolin.

At 32 years old, Ryan Gosling is the youngest name on the list but easily the most high profile. While it may not seem like the most obvious move for Gosling to make, he was attached to WB's remake of Logan's Run for a time, and has worked with the studio on Gangster Squad and his upcoming directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster. I have a hard time buying into Gosling as Batman, but after watching how he was able to transform himself in Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, it would be foolish to write him off.

Perhaps the most interesting name on the list is Joe Manganiello, who at 36 years old fits right in the middle in terms of age, and is reasonably well known thanks to his leading a wolf pack on HBO's True Blood. He began to come into his own a little bit last year in Magic Mike, but what's important to remember is that he was the runner-up to Henry Cavill for Man of Steel. So clearly Snyder likes him, and may be looking at a way to get both of his top guys on screen.

Matthew Goode has worked with Snyder in the past as part of 2009's Watchmen, so he knows a thing or two about superheroes and adapting some of comics' most cherished works. Other names in consideration are Max Martini, who played the Aussie dad in Pacific Rim, but he seems too unknown for a role like this. And lastly, there's Richard Armitage, best known for slaughtering orcs as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit movies.

This is still very early on as David Goyer and Zack Snyder are still working on the script, but to assume they haven't been planning this sequel for months already would be foolish. So it's likely that many of these names and others have been kicked around for awhile. A decision is said to be coming in just a few weeks in order to get ready for an early 2014 start date.

Can you see any of these actors as Batman? Or do you have someone else in mind?

Joe Manganiello joins Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sam Worthington in 'Breacher'

Rememember when True Blood's hunky werewolf, Joe Manganiello, was in the mix to play Superman in Man of Steel? Seems like forever ago, right? Well, just hitting the final list of contenders(his schedule prevented his getting the job) seems to have worked wonders for his career, as he's been showing off his pecs in everything from the unfortunate What to Expect When You're Expecting to the surprisingly deep Magic Mike. Now he's landed another major role that will have him working alongside two of today's biggest action stars.

Manganiello is in talks to join the cast of Breacher, a *shocker* cop thriller from David Ayer(Street Kings, Dark Blue) that currently stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sam Worthington. Based on Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, the film follows a DEA task force who rob a cartel safe house, only to find themselves getting picked off one-by-one after thinking they got away with the job. Manganiello will play a guy named Grinder, who has a change of heart and tries to contact the cops. Dawn Olivieri(House of Lies) and Terrence Howard co-star.

Written by Skip Woods(X-men Origins: Wolverine), production kicks off in October. You can still find Manganiello slogging through another horrible season of True Blood. Can they spin his character off into something else, please? Or just kill him off so he can do more movies? [THR]

Review: 'Magic Mike', starring Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer

With the exception of a very few, no actor ever started out at the top of their profession. Many began their careers at a lowly place, doing things they probably wish nobody would ever find out about. In today's TMZ fueled society, keeping a humble beginning secret is impossible, so why not just embrace it? That's exactly what Channing Tatum has done with his excellent, crowd pleasing semi-autobiographical stripper film, Magic Mike.
Yes, Tatum's early career saw him working the pole for ladies carrying wads of wrinkled up $1 bills. While many would see that as an embarrassment, one thing Tatum has never lacked is confidence, and one can only imagine dancing half naked in a room full of strangers is a good way to build plenty of it. Half the women in the country probably bought their tickets months ago, enraptured by still photos and TV spots of the cast's glistening abs and tantalizing, rhythmic dance routines. For everyone else, Magic Mike has to have been a curiosity. What reason would any guy have for wanting to see this movie? The answer is pretty simple: Steven Soderbergh.

Soderbergh, a visionary director with small scale sensibilities, he's the absolute perfect choice to steer what is a fairly common story about a simple guy just trying to make his way and stand on his own two feet. Tatum plays Mike Martingano, the top male act at club Xquisite, which is run by Dallas(Matthew McConaughey), who has dreams of moving their popular joint to Miami for bigger fame and larger profits. Essentially, the film is all about dreams and the terrible hardships the common man has to endure in order to see those dreams fulfilled. In Mike's case, he doesn't want to be a middle-aged man still ripping off his clothes on a sweaty stage. He fancies himself an entrepreneur, with a passion for building custom furniture. Dallas may run the club, but Mike is the meal ticket, and when the move to Miami gets made, it's supposedly a 10% equity share all around.

That's right. Equity. Beefcake is what's going to get people in the door, but does anyone expect that Soderbergh would make a movie that's simply about bare chests and Step Up dance moves?  It's almost like the start of a bad joke: "A bunch of male bimbos walk into a bank", as Mike and his chiseled chums discuss fair market values and equity stakes...and penis pumps. Can't forget those. Nobody navigates the world of selling sex with as much insight as Soderbergh does, and he sees some of the ridiculousness of their job, while also noting the camaraderie and insular fame that comes with it.  Soderbergh mined similar territory with 2009's The Girlfriend Experience, and much like Sasha Grey's character in that film, Mike is trying desperately to not have others define him by his work.

Of course that's exactly what happens when he meets Paige(the stiff as wood Cody Horn), the straight-laced sister of Adam(a scruffy Alex Pettyfer). Meeting Adam at a construction job, Mike quickly takes the scraggly layabout under his wing, getting him a job at Xquisite, and showing him the ropes. But Mike sees a potential future with Paige, yet she sees him only as a stripper and nothing more. The film, which is pretty light most of the way, gets really dark when the pitfalls of drugs, booze, sex, and celebrity become too much for Adam to handle.

For all the raving and frenzied fans the men at the Xquisite have, Soderbergh and writer Reid Carolin spend much of the film taking the mystique out of the business. We spend nearly as much time with Mike as he and the others engage in the less glamorous part of their jobs. We see them practicing their routines, buying new outfits, and in the case of Big D**k Richie(Joe Manganiello) that also means employing the occasional penis pump.

But enough of all this plot stuff. How much skin do we really get to see? Well, in the first 2 minutes of the film you will see Tatum's naked rear end. In a nice twist, though, we also get to see Olivia Munn topless, so there's a little something for everybody. It's almost like Soderbergh wanted to get that stuff out of the way, give the people what they came for, and then hook them with a surprisingly well constructed, "boy makes good" love story. Tatum has never been more charismatic and engaging than he is here, and it's no wonder he's become such a Soderbergh favorite.  Pettyfer still can't act, but his job is really just to look pretty. McConaughey gets to indulge a little in the pretty boy cowboy persona he's had all of his career, but he also manages to show a little depth as Dallas quickly slips from showman when on stage, to slick businessman as soon as the curtain drops. Dallas is basically who all of the other dancers aspires to be in some way. He's a stripper who now has his own thing, a business to call his own.

Perhaps more than any of his other films, Magic Mike has Soderbergh straddling the divide between the mainstream and the art house. On the surface, the film is a tantalizing, escapist blast with visual flair and some nifty dance routines. But strip down a few layers and there's a surprisingly weighty story about making your own way and grasping hard for the American dream.

Crotch shots galore in new 'Magic Mike' red band trailer

For a movie that is basically about a bunch of really hunky dudes stripping down to their skivvies, the spots we've seen for Magic Mike have been pretty tame. Channing Tatum's moves have been more reminiscent of his pop lockin' in Step Up, and that's basically been it. Bare chests? Pfft! Even Twilight has bare chests. Just how dirty is this moving going to get, anyhow?

A new, 1-minute long red band trailer has the answer, and it's....well, you might want to leave the kids at home. It's a virtual parade of six-pack abs, thongs, and foot-long prosthetic schlongs. Yeah, I'm a poet.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh(!!!!), the film is based in part on Tatum's early career as a male stripper. He plays Mike, a stripper at club Xquisite, who teaches a hungry protege the ropes on how to work the ladies for big dollars. Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Munn, Cody Horn, Kevin Nash, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Kevin Nash co-star. Magic Mike opens on June 29th. New 'Magic Mike' poster and clip works it all night

If there's going to be a film that comes out of nowhere and sucker punches those bigger, more expensive summer movies it might just be Magic Mike. While it doesn't feature any mutants or armored space Gods or anything, it does feature the superhuman power of Channing Tatum's sweaty abs and unnatural dancing ability. Test audiences have described the film as a definite crowd pleaser, and those sorts of movies tend to work well even in the thick of the summer crush. You can count on a pretty sizable female audience for this one, but is that enough to push Magic Mike into sleeper hit status? The difference maker might be Steven Soderbergh, whose presence as director all but guarantees this will be more than the "home town stripper makes good" story it appears to be.

The latest clip is sure to get a few people all hot 'n bothered, as Tatum, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Joe Manganiello, and Kevin Nash(!!!) hump the floor to a steamy rendition of The Weather Girls' 'It's Raining Men'. You just can't have a respectable male stripper film without 'It's Raining Men' somewhere in it.  The story was developed by Tatum and writer Reid Carolyn, and based in part on Tatum's experience as a dancer in the early part of his career. Matthew McConaughey, Riley Keough, and Olivia Munn co-star.

Tatum has already scored two $100M+ hit with The Vow and 21 Jump Street. Could Magic Mike be number three? We'll find out on June 29th...[MTV]
