Naomie Harris Laces Up for 'Southpaw'; Lizzy Caplan and Jillian Bell Join Christmas Comedy

Any movie about the sweet science of boxing deserves a tough as nails cast, and now Antoine Fuqua's Southpaw has added Skyfall and 28 Days Later star Naomie Harris. She joins Jake Gyllenhaal in the film about a lefty fighter whose personal life crumbles as he battles towards the welterweight championship. Harris was last seen in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. [Deadline]

Masters of Sex star Lizzy Caplan, along with 22 Jump Street's Jillian Bell, have joined Jonathan Levine's untitled Christmas comedy. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Anthony Mackie star in the film about three friends who reunite in New York City for their annual tradition of going out on the town during Christmas Eve. Anthony Mackie Joins Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Christmas Comedy

After finding a way to make a movie about cancer pretty funny with 50/50, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Jonathan Levine decided they wanted to get back together for a Christmas movie. While the trio's reunion is reason enough to keep this film on the radar, it's now become even more promising with the addition of Anthony Mackie to the cast.

Mackie, last seen soaring through the air in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has joined the comedy about three childhood best friends who reunite in New York City for their annual tradition of going out and partying on Christmas Eve. Chances are Mackie will play the third buddy, making for a terribly likable cast. Who wouldn't want to party with these guys? Levine's typical approach is to blend genres and one can only wonder what his twist on this film will be.

Filming is set to begin this summer.

Jonathan Levine Moves to Direct Chess Drama, 'Brooklyn Castle'

Jonathan Levine scored his biggest box office hit with last year's zombie romance, Warm Bodies, and considering all of his films have been generally well-received, he's had no trouble finding work. Just this month he landed on the shortlist to direct Marvel's Doctor Strange, and lined up a reteaming with his 50/50 pals Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen for a Christmas comedy. Now he's added one more project, and it's a remake of an award-winning documentary.

Levine is on board to direct a feature film version of Katie Dellamaggiore's SXSW award-winning chess documentary, Brooklyn Castle. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will produce, with Will Reiser penning the inspirational true story centering on the kids of I.S. 318, part of one of the most distinguished championship chess programs in the country. This is despite the junior high being located in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Brooklyn, with family incomes well below the federal poverty level.Of course in a situation such as that, budget woes always threaten to cut the program from the kids' live altogether.

It's a great story, one that be uplifting and infuriating, a combination Levine's ability to blend tones is perfect for. Count this as another feather in the cap of Rogen and Goldberg, who recently added Console Wars, the Preacher TV series, and an upcoming project with the Workaholics troupe. [Deadline]

Jonathan Levine, Pixar's Mark Andrews on Shortlist to Direct 'Doctor Strange'

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has made it no secret that he wants Doctor Strange to be a part of Phase Three, and according to some reports it's already a done deal. Adding a heavy dose of credence to that story is the emergence of a new shortlist of directors that Marvel is seeking to direct the film, including a pair of writers to begin penning the Sorcerer Supreme's adventures.

According to THR, Marvel have set their sights on Mark Andrews, Jonathan Levine, Nikolaj Arcel and Dean Israelite as contenders. Along with that, Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger (Kung Fu Panda) have met to write the script, although producers may be looking for a director who can fill both roles, the same way Shane Black was writer/director on Iron Man 3.

The director shortlist is interesting, to say the least. Andrews has close ties to Disney, having recently directed Pixar's Brave. Arcel directed recent Oscar nominee A Royal Affair, while Israelite is set to make his feature debut on time travel film, Welcome to Yesterday. The most intriguing choice may be Levine, who has shown a propensity for blending genres with films like 50/50 and Warm Bodies.

It's beginning to look like Marvel is holding one of their open release date slots for Doctor Strange. Right now they have May 6th 2016,  July 8th 2016 and May 5th 2017 waiting to be filled.

Christmas Comedy On the Way from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Jonathan Levine

Of all the genre-blending comedies put forth by director Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, The Wackness), perhaps the toughest to pull off was 50/50. Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt starred in the cancer comedy that attempted to shed the light of humor on a tough topic, and for the most part it was successful creatively and at the box office. And it must have been a great time on set because the trio are teaming up once again, and this time they'll be tackling the holiday season.

THR reports Levine will write and direct an "untitled Xmas comedy" about three childhood friends who meet for their annual tradition of going out on Christmas Eve. A third actor is being sought to join Gordon-Levitt and Rogen as the best pals.

This one's being pushed for a summer start after Sony won a heated bidding war for the rights, so expect to see this one under the tree soon.

Review: 'Warm Bodies' starring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer

On the surface, a film like Warm Bodies probably shouldn't work. A blending of zombie horror and teen romance, the genres sound like they'd make for a pretty nasty combination ripe for a disastrous result. But those are exactly the sorts of films Jonathan Levine(50/50, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) has specialized in during his young career, and not surprisingly he's found the magic ingredients to make an undead version of Romeo & Juliet a fresh, affecting tale of young love.

Not surprisingly, the film comes from the folks at Summit Entertainment, hoping to lure the Twilight fans and The Walking Dead fans into hanging out for awhile. What they'll find is a lightweight teen rom-com that still charts as more substantial than anything Bella and Edward encountered, while certainly not as harrowing as the folks on AMC's hit show. Unable to completely hide his heartthrob good looks, Nicholas Hoult plays R, a zombie who still harbors fond memories of the way things were before some sort of undead apocalypse destroyed most of humanity. He harbors memories of a good many things, actually, and keeps a stockpile of old records and other trinkets of his prior life. Staying in an old jetliner with a horde of other zombies who seem perfectly fine with their current predicament, R wants something more than just eating brains and slowly deteriorating. He even wonders why it is he can't connect with people. It's because you're dead, silly.

Aussie heart-stopper Teresa Palmer is Julie, part of an armed human resistance against the zombies, and the daughter of General Grigio (John Malkovich), the man leading the charge. While out on patrol, she and her team, which includes her boyfriend Perry (Dave Franco) and best friend Nora (Analeigh Tipton), are attacked by R and a bunch of other zombies. R quickly kills Perry, but before he can do away with Julie he finds himself completely smitten by the gun-toting beauty.

In a rather inventive twist that keeps the zombies from being completely inhuman, they relive the real human emotions and memories of their victims while devouring their brains. It taps into their desire to feel something human again, which is just as primal as the hunger to feed. Through devouring Perry's gray matter, R can relive his past with Julie, seen in vivid flashbacks. Stealing her away from the fighting, R makes the sort of nonsensical move only someone blinded by love would make: he takes her back to the zombie stronghold. There he hides her in his jet cabin, where they slowly grow closer by listening to his old rock ballads. Sure, the fact that he ate her boyfriend is glossed over a little, but their developing connection is nonetheless extremely sweet despite also being a little morbid. Along the way, Julia discovers that throwing a little love R's way could possibly change him, and thus change the world in a way all of her daddy's weapons can't. It's a tale of forbidden teen love, only with a few more rotting corpses. The humor is mostly of the ironic Shaun of the Dead variety, and at certain points the post-apocalyptic jokes bore some similarity to last year's Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.  That's a very good thing.

Palmer, who was easily the best thing about Take Me Home Tonight and I Am Number Four, has many of the same qualities that make Kristen Stewart so successful. It doesn't hurt that they look like identical cousins. She has a knack for imbuing her characters with an undeniable inner strength that makes them utterly irresistible. It probably wasn't all that difficult for Hoult to play someone who falls madly in love with her. If only Levine could have gotten more out of Malkovich, who simply isn't given a whole lot to do here as the obstinate father-figure. Levine as always had a way with soundtracks, and he employs an eclectic mix of rock hits during some rather disturbing scenes. It works, even if you'll likely never hear "Missing You" again without thinking of zombies chomping on human brains.

Having never read the Isaac Marion novel from which the film is based, it's impossible to say how faithful it is. What Levine has done is take two stale genres and make them much greater than their individual parts. Warm Bodies is a slickly made, ingeniously constructed teen comedy warm enough to melt even the coldest heart.

More Malkovich in the latest 'Warm Bodies' trailer

Jonathan Levine(50/50) is usually pretty good at blending genres that don't necessarily go together, but the first trailer for Warm Bodies was a tonal nightmare. It's possible that Levine tried to show us too much in an effort to appeal to everyone this film could possibly reach, such as the Twilight crowd, the horror crowd, and those familiar with the director's previous comedies. A new minute-long trailer has a much tighter focus, and a lot more John Malkovich, which is always a good thing.

Malkovich plays General Gigio, who really doesn't want his daughter Julia(Teresa Palmer) to be dating a zombie named R(Nicholas Hoult), even though he's different from other zombies. R has feelings, and it's discovered that love may be strong enough to change zombies back to normal.  This trailer has less of the whole star-crossed lovers angle, which didn't really work last time, and goes in for the horror-comedy route. They should quickly remove the other trailer from theaters and replace it with this one.

Warm Bodies will warm your heart and eat your brains on February 1st 2013....

Zombies need love, too. The first trailer for 'Warm Bodies' with Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer

So how sick of you of zombies at this point? Have we hit the tipping point where all of the movies and TV shows have made the undead passe? Well, Jonathan Levine's Warm Bodies intends to change all of that by presenting a zombie tale that's more love story than brain-eating horror.

At one time expected to open last summer, the film was unexpectedly bumped to next year, and maybe this newly released trailer can tell us why. Nicholas Hoult plays R, a zombie who isn't quite like other zombies. He has a best friend(Rob Corddry), for one thing, and he seems to be keenly aware of his surroundings and isn't just some mumbling eating machine. He even has some measure of guilt for all of the people he's forced to kill. But when he meets Julie(Teresa Palmer), it literally warms his dead heart, and he falls in love with her. Turns out that love can maybe fix that whole being undead problem.

We could be looking at an uneven, tonal disaster if this footage is any indication. Usually that plays into Levine's strength, having directed the drug comedy The Wackness and last year's 50/50. The aim seems to be that Zombieland meets Romeo & Juliet sweet spot, and if Levine can pull it off Warm Bodies could be a welcome surprise. Otherwise.....not so much.

Co-starring John Malkovich, Analeigh Tipton, and Dave Franco, Warm Bodies arrives in time for Valentine's Day on February 1st....

New poster for zombie romance 'Warm Bodies'

Following on Jonathan Levine's success with the cancer comedy 50/50, all eyes were on his follow-up film, Warm Bodies. After a flurry of activity and attention the first few months, we've heard next to nothing about it since the release date was bumped from last August to next year. Now with that date only four months away, we're getting a new teaser poster which features star Nicholas Hoult(X-men: First Class) as one of the undead.

An adaptation of Isaac Marion's novel, the story centers on a highly unusual zombie simply named 'R' who saves the girlfriend of one of his cohorts' victims. Teresa Palmer plays Julie, the woman he saves and enters into a relationship with that may transform not only him, but the entire world.

Analeigh Tipton, Rob Corddry, John Malkovich, Dave Franco, and Cory Hardrict will co-star when Warm Bodies opens on February 1st. A teaser poster like this usually means a trailer is on the way, so keep an eye out for that. [STYD]

1st look at Nicholas Hoult as a zombie in 'Warm Bodies'

Ever since he made a big comeback as the glistening apple of Colin Firth's eye in A Single Man, Nicholas Hoult has justifiably been labeled a sex symbol. After appearing in the blurry Clash of the Titans, he then defied his recently acquired status by playing the nerdy, blue furred, bouncing Beast in X-men: First Class. While his good looks will be put to good use as the lead in Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer, Hoult is again setting them aside for Jonathan Levine's zombie romance, Warm Bodies.

The first images from Warm Bodies have been released, and they show Hoult as 'R', a zombie who falls in love Julie(Teresa Palmer), the girlfriend of one of his victims. R is different than the rest of his kind. He doesn't just stumble around looking for his next fleshy meal, he has higher hopes and dreams, and decides to become Julie's protector from the harsh world around them.  Rob Corddry, Analeigh Tipton, Cory Hardrict, Dave Franco, and John Malkovich as Julie's zombie hating father make up an impressive cast. If you look closely in the background of one of the two photos I think you can see Corddry as a zombie, as well.

Levine is batting 1.000 with me so far, and Warm Bodies is one I can't wait for. His latest, 50/50, might be making some noise at the Oscars this year so do yourself a favor and seek it out.  Warm Bodies opens on August 10th. [USA Today]

John Malkovich to join Jonathan Levine's zombie flick, Warm Bodies

Zombie movies? There are too many of them. It's a crowded field, bubbling over the movie world and into television as well. But to be fair, new things are being done with the subgenre to keep it interesting. One of the projects that I think tackles zombies in a particularly cool way is Warm Bodies, a zombie romance that'll be the next film from Jonathan Levine(The Wackness, 50/50).

Already sporting a cast that includes Nicholas Hoult(X-men: First Class), Teresa Palmer(Take Me Home Tonight) and Rob Corddry(Hot Tub Time Machine), Variety now reports that John Malkovich is in final talks to join as well. The film centers on a zombie named R(Hoult) who enters into an odd relationship with the girlfriend(Palmer) of one of his victims. Malkovich will play General Grigio, who wants to see all zombies destroyed.

A strange film that just got an added injection of weirdness with Malkovich. So far Levine has yet to fail me in any of his three flicks, and Warm Bodies is already looking like a winner. Shooting is set to begin later this month.

Rob Corddry in Jonathan Levine's zombie rom-com, Warm Bodies

On a list of my favorite up and coming filmmaker, Jonathan Levine may just be at the top. Actually it's almost unfair to put him in that category, because the three films I've seen from him have been remarkable accomplishments. The teen horror All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is the best the genre's seen in years. The Wackness is a bit uneven, but packs a number of great performances in a story with a lot of heart. And 50/50, the comedy/drama starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a cancer victim(yes it IS a comedy!!) I think is going to turn some heads when it comes out next month.  But Levine's got another film coming up soon after, and this could be the best yet just based on concept.

Back in March, Nicholas Hoult(About a Boy) and Teresa Palmer(Take Me Home Tonight) joined the cast of Warm Bodies, a romantic comedy set in a world where a zombie plague has pretty much wiped everybody out. Hoult will play R, a zombie who forms a relationship with Julie(Palmer), the girlfriend of one of his victims, and seeks to protect her from the plague. Sound cool? Yeah, I thought so too.

Variety is now reporting that funnyman Rob Corddry has joined the cast, playing another zombie and friend of R's. Corddry was last seen in the Ed Helms comedy, Cedar Rapids.

Sure Shots: Channing Tatum; Bryce Dallas Howard; Nicholas Hoult

* Channing Tatum in little green tights? I'm sure the ladies will love it. The buffed up actor is currently shopping a project called Peter Pan Begins, which sounds like a really ill-conceived origin story. Screenwriter Billy Ray(Shattered Glass) and producer Joe Roth(Alice in Wonderland) are aboard as well. More than likely Tatum won't actually be starring but could just be producing. Lord let's hope that's all it is.  Personally I think people should just check out the underrated 2004 Peter Pan and call it a day. Thanks to THR for the exclusively break on that story.

* We love Bryce Dallas Howard here at Punch Drunk Critics International, but I have to admit her directorial debut sounds derivative as heck.  She's set to follow in daddy's footsteps with The Originals, about a group of childhood friends who reunite as young adults when a former teacher falls into a coma. Wasn't that the premise behind Grown Ups? Are they going camping? Ugh. Howard and her brother-in-law Dane Charbonneau penned the script. She describes it as a "Breakfast Club for my generation". Double ugh.  Apparently one of the roles was written for Zoe Saldana(The Losers). Run, Zoe, run!

* You make one movie as Colin Firth's boy toy and suddenly you're Hollywood's fresh new plaything. Nicholas Hoult has signed on to Warm Bodies, Jonathan Levine's adaptation of Isaac Marion's upcoming novel about a relationship between a zombie and the human girlfriend of one of his victims. Shooting will begin this summer and should complete around the time of Levine's cancer comedy, 50/50, releases. That film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. Thanks to THR for this story as well.
