Review: Tommy Wirkola's 'Dead Snow: Red Vs Dead'

Zombies, cool. Nazi Zombies, infinitely cooler. This is the basic premise under which Dead Snow was originally made back in 2009. To run down the original (which this movie does a great job of recapping for you in the first 10 minutes) a group of friends heads out to a cabin for a ski vacation and discover a box of treasure.  It just so happens that the gold is actually Nazi gold, and opening it awakens a company of dead Nazi soldiers from under the snow and, BOOM, Nazi zombies. From there it’s pretty standard zombie faire, albeit in an awesome way, leaving only one survivor in the end, Martin who was bitten but was able to saw his arm off in time ala Evil Dead 2. Dead Snow: Red Vs Dead picks up immediately following the events of its predecessor with Martin soaking in the viscera and horror of what has just happened which, by the way, includes him accidentally killing his girlfriend with a hatchet…by the way folks, if your significant other is currently rage killing a zombie with a hatchet it’s probably not a good idea to walk up behind them in that moment, just saying. Anyway, as Martin makes it to his car he gets attacked again by a group of zombies including their commander, Herzog. Usually that’s not an issue, just drive away, except for the fact that he has a manual transmission and is missing his right arm. Finally! A decent reason for our hero to not get away immediately when there are monsters outside of your car. As he makes his getaway the Nazi commander is hanging from his car until he gets hit by a passing truck leaving his severed nazi arm flopping in Martin’s front seat. Passing out Martin awakens in a hospital to find that the doctors mistook Herzog’s severed arm for his own, and attached it. With Herzog’s Nazi’s reassuming their old mission to wipe out a small town Martin must jump back in the fight with the help of his new zombie arm all while evading the police who think he killed all of his friends (what? They didn’t buy the old Nazi Zombies killed my friends bit?).

Does that sound utterly ridiculous to you? In a good way or a bad way? I ask these questions because, in all honesty, my review could end right there. If you answered “in a good way”, you’re going to dig this movie, its really that simple. They take that premise and chock it up with all the great, silly, gory fun of the first film and maybe even a little more. Other than the top level premise almost everything about this movie is pretty standard, from the main plot point of a possessed arm to the zombie kills, you’ve seen it all before…just not like this. Dead Snow: Red Vs Dead is one of those flicks that proves you can put all of those overused tropes of film in your movie and still have a blast of a flick, as long as you do it right! While there is a lot of familiarity to the movie there’s a lot of new ground broken as well, first and foremost being the power of Herzog. He functions almost like the Queen Bee in a hive mentality-laden zombie horde. He can revive the dead by touch and convert the living the same way, no need to bite…a power given also to Martin thanks to the transplant. It’s a really cool switch and melds with the new threat perfectly. Instead of just being brainless flesh eaters the dead are driven to accomplish what they were stopped from doing in life. We find out, as I said previously, that Herzog and his men were on their way to wipe out a small town. What I didn’t mention was that we later find out that Herzog and his men executed a Russian unit on their way there. Seeing Martin, using his newfound zombie powers, bring a group of dead Russian soldiers out of the ground in order to lead them in an undead battle royale against the Nazi’s is a thing of beauty.

In the mix of all this is the Zombie Squad, an American crew Martin recruits to push the odds in their favor. He thinks he’s getting a paramilitary merc squad, what he gets is a geeky trio lead by Daniel (Martin Star of Freaks & Geeks fame). Here’s where they went in another new direction, instead of being incompetent geeks out of their depths, they actually kick some ass….even if it seems to be mostly luck.  Rounding out the cast of characters is a small town police department who have never seen anything resembling “action”. Disposable but hilarious, the Norwegian branch of the Barney Fife academy really adds a nice touch on top of what is already a bucket of gross undead fun.

Speaking of gross and undead, let’s get to that gore shall we? I mean, that is one of the major draws of a zombie flick, right? Now I know I said that the kills were standard, and they are, with a special emphasis on pulling out intestines. Where they really excel is in two places, the comedy and the production value. I’m going to guess it would have been much cheaper for this small indie movie out of Norway to use CGI but there are practical effects abounding throughout, I don’t know if I say one obvious CGI shot, and boy does it pay off. The shear ick factor given by the work they did is worth the price of admission, look especially to the first severed head you see, there’s this glazed squishy-ness quality to all of the effects shots that really make you shudder. But, you know, in a good way. One last thing on the effects side of things, really a question more than anything else, why is it that I can watch all the gore this movie can throw at me without batting an eye but the first scene involving vomit immediately makes me squirm? The second place they really get it right is possibly the most important aspect, the comedy. None of this works if it’s not genuinely absurd and funny, especially considering it’s not the least bit frightening. I’m trying to think of a place where they jokes fell flat and, while I’m sure there were some, I can’t remember any. Just now I said it’s absurd and funny, that’s probably better said so absurd it becomes funny, the things they get away with make you laugh, and then make you question whether or not you should feel bad for laughing. Say, two mothers walking their infants in strollers getting blown all to bits by a 70 year old Nazi tank, for instance. I should also include that, though the kids are covered pre-explosion, there is a quick second of a tiny infant flying at the screen. See, now we’re back to “If it’s not funny, it doesn’t work”.

So what’s the final word? I’ll revert to my earlier question, does this sound utterly ridiculous to you? This is a simple movie to review, there’s no nuance, either it’s your thing or it’s not. If it’s not, I didn’t write this for you, I wrote this solely to remind those who dug it about Dead Snow, and to let them know that Dead Snow: Red Vs Dead is a follow-up that’s just as good, if not better, than the original.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Takes On Zombie Film, 'Maggie'

The zombie film Maggie has been kicking around for a couple of years, ever since the script by John Scott 3(straight up, he's got a digit in his name) wound up on the 2011 Black List of best unproduced screenplays. While the story does include zombies, or at least one particular zombie, it's caught the eye of a lot of talent because it tries something a little different with the genre. Chloe Moretz and Paddy Considine were circling it last year, but now both appear to be out, with Arnold Schwarzenegger stepping in.

In what is either the most inspired casting or the weirdest (possibly both), Schwarzenegger will produce and take the male lead in the film. He'll play the father to a little girl named Maggie, who is slowly but surely transforming into a zombie. It's definitely a change of pace for him, but just how much is going to depend on the tone. If it turns out to be more of a father/daughter drama, with the zombification essentially standing in for terminal illness or something, then this could be really interesting. Commercials director Henry Hobson will be behind the camera when production finally gets underway, but first an actress to play Maggie needs to be found.

Audiences don't seem to be flocking to Schwarzenegger films like they used to, unless he's part of The Expendables' ensemble. He'll be seen next opposite Sylvester Stallone in Escape Plan, and he has the David Ayer cop thriller Ten opening next year. He'll be back for The Expendables 3, and if rumors are true, he could be throwing down with Dwayne Johnson in Terminator 5. [Variety]

Blu-Ray Deal of the Week: 'The Walking Dead'- The Complete First Season for $19.49

When it was revealed that AMC would be adapting Robert Kirkman's incredible comic book, The Walking Dead, into a weekly television series, I'm not sure anyone thought it would be as big of a hit as it turned out to be. But now as the third season is only a couple of months away, I think they've done an amazing job of capturing Kirkman's vision of a world overrun by zombies, and the drastic effect such a world has on the few people left to live in it.

Now you can catch up with the adventures of Rick, Laurie, Daryl, and Shane with The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season on Blu-Ray. Yours for only $19.49, that's more than 60% off the retail price, you'll get the entire season plus extra footage, featurettes, and behind-the-scenes looks with the cast and crew.  It's a great deal, and you can take advantage of it just by clicking here.

And if you're really wanting to get into the thick of all the zombie action, you can also order The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season on Blu-Ray for only $29.99, that's 57% off what you'll pay in stores. That can be yours by going here.

John Malkovich to join Jonathan Levine's zombie flick, Warm Bodies

Zombie movies? There are too many of them. It's a crowded field, bubbling over the movie world and into television as well. But to be fair, new things are being done with the subgenre to keep it interesting. One of the projects that I think tackles zombies in a particularly cool way is Warm Bodies, a zombie romance that'll be the next film from Jonathan Levine(The Wackness, 50/50).

Already sporting a cast that includes Nicholas Hoult(X-men: First Class), Teresa Palmer(Take Me Home Tonight) and Rob Corddry(Hot Tub Time Machine), Variety now reports that John Malkovich is in final talks to join as well. The film centers on a zombie named R(Hoult) who enters into an odd relationship with the girlfriend(Palmer) of one of his victims. Malkovich will play General Grigio, who wants to see all zombies destroyed.

A strange film that just got an added injection of weirdness with Malkovich. So far Levine has yet to fail me in any of his three flicks, and Warm Bodies is already looking like a winner. Shooting is set to begin later this month.

Rob Corddry in Jonathan Levine's zombie rom-com, Warm Bodies

On a list of my favorite up and coming filmmaker, Jonathan Levine may just be at the top. Actually it's almost unfair to put him in that category, because the three films I've seen from him have been remarkable accomplishments. The teen horror All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is the best the genre's seen in years. The Wackness is a bit uneven, but packs a number of great performances in a story with a lot of heart. And 50/50, the comedy/drama starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a cancer victim(yes it IS a comedy!!) I think is going to turn some heads when it comes out next month.  But Levine's got another film coming up soon after, and this could be the best yet just based on concept.

Back in March, Nicholas Hoult(About a Boy) and Teresa Palmer(Take Me Home Tonight) joined the cast of Warm Bodies, a romantic comedy set in a world where a zombie plague has pretty much wiped everybody out. Hoult will play R, a zombie who forms a relationship with Julie(Palmer), the girlfriend of one of his victims, and seeks to protect her from the plague. Sound cool? Yeah, I thought so too.

Variety is now reporting that funnyman Rob Corddry has joined the cast, playing another zombie and friend of R's. Corddry was last seen in the Ed Helms comedy, Cedar Rapids.

Sure Shots: Channing Tatum; Bryce Dallas Howard; Nicholas Hoult

* Channing Tatum in little green tights? I'm sure the ladies will love it. The buffed up actor is currently shopping a project called Peter Pan Begins, which sounds like a really ill-conceived origin story. Screenwriter Billy Ray(Shattered Glass) and producer Joe Roth(Alice in Wonderland) are aboard as well. More than likely Tatum won't actually be starring but could just be producing. Lord let's hope that's all it is.  Personally I think people should just check out the underrated 2004 Peter Pan and call it a day. Thanks to THR for the exclusively break on that story.

* We love Bryce Dallas Howard here at Punch Drunk Critics International, but I have to admit her directorial debut sounds derivative as heck.  She's set to follow in daddy's footsteps with The Originals, about a group of childhood friends who reunite as young adults when a former teacher falls into a coma. Wasn't that the premise behind Grown Ups? Are they going camping? Ugh. Howard and her brother-in-law Dane Charbonneau penned the script. She describes it as a "Breakfast Club for my generation". Double ugh.  Apparently one of the roles was written for Zoe Saldana(The Losers). Run, Zoe, run!

* You make one movie as Colin Firth's boy toy and suddenly you're Hollywood's fresh new plaything. Nicholas Hoult has signed on to Warm Bodies, Jonathan Levine's adaptation of Isaac Marion's upcoming novel about a relationship between a zombie and the human girlfriend of one of his victims. Shooting will begin this summer and should complete around the time of Levine's cancer comedy, 50/50, releases. That film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. Thanks to THR for this story as well.

Johannson, Gordon-Levitt attached to Diablo Cody's upcoming zombie flick

Last year we got to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt steal hearts in the romantic comedy, 500 Days of Summer, as a love weary dude who falls in love with the girl of his dreams. Now he's gonna get another crack at winning over the hot chick, only this time he's going to have one huge stumbling block: he's a zombie.  He and Scarlett Johansson are very loosely attached to star in Breathers: A Zombie's Lament, Diablo Cody's(Juno) adaptation of the recently released novel by S.G. Browne.

Cody is merely on hand to produce, with the search for a director already underway. The script has been written by Geoff Latulippe, who wrote the long distance romantic-comedy Going the Distance that's due out this week.

JGL would star as Andy, a freshly dead regular dude who returns to "life" as a zombie, only to face fear and prejudice from the regular human population. Well, duh. Hasn't he ever seen True Blood? We can't even treat vamps like regular people and we love vamps! Johansson would be Rita, a woman who recently committed suicide and returned from the dead as well. The two form some sort of romantic bond, but other outside problems threaten to tear them up.

Sounds like one silly ass story. I love it already. JGL and Johansson are two of my favorites, and I can see them having great chemistry together. So obviously I hope the casting works out. With Latulippe writing(his script for Going the Distance is remarkable, I might add), I'm adding this to my list of flicks to keep both eyes on.

Tim Burton + Abe Lincoln = Zombies?

The last time Tim Burton teamed up with Timur Bekmambetov, they brought the gorgeously animated feature, '9'. Despite that film's critical and financial failure, the two obviously must've hit it off because now they're teaming up for an even bigger story. Screen Daily is reporting that the pair have signed on to produce an adaption of Seth Grahame-Smith's crazy novel, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Grahame-Smith will handle his own writing chores on the film. His work has been the subject of much attention lately, as his previous novel Pride & Prejudice and Zombies is also being prepped for production.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter only just hit store shelves today, so here's a look at the promo trailer for the book. Pretty damned hilarious, if you ask me. I'm all in for this one.
