New 'Mockingjay' Clip Reveals a Familiar Face

Just a few short weeks until we launch into part 1 of the 2 part finale for the epic Hunger Games series, expect the media onslaught to begin NOW. Today's clip reveals to us, and Katniss, a friend we feared dead *SPOILER ALERT* At the end of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Peta Malark, it seemed, was dead. His not-deadness is revealed in full form to Katniss via a sit down interview with MC extraordinaire, Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci), which brings up a number of questions, the answers to which are likely  to greatly impact the events of Mockinjay. As a non-book reader this is all news to me and leaves me with only one REAL question, has Peta turned to the darkside? Is it a ruse? Is he under mind-control? Obviously Katniss is just as shocked as we are, the good news is we can find out the answer on November 21st, 2014 when The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt.1 hits theaters! Oh the intrigue, oh the drama!

Katniss Everdeen was just an ordinary girl when The Hunger Games began, but by the time it was over not only was she a woman but the face of a growing rebellion. Katniss prepares to strike in new image from The Hunger Games

More important than the cool new image above, featuring Katniss Everdeen(Jennifer Lawrence) about to let fly one of her signature arrows, is the news that exclusive new footage from The Hunger Games will premier on Monday. Unfortunately it'll mean having to endure Good Morning America and George Stephanopoulos' helmet hair to see it. Fans of the crazy popular novels by Suzanne Collins will be more than happy to do it just for a glimpse at what Gary Ross is doing with their beloved books.

The bigger question to me is what exactly is Lionsgate expecting out of The Hunger Games? Clearly they want this to be their Twilight, but I have my doubts whether it'll have that sort of broad appeal. We can mock those sappy adaptations all we like, but it's not just teeny boppers paying to see the movies. The Hunger Games is far more disturbing, basically revolving around child violence. Even with it's PG-13 rating I suspect there'll be some folks turned off by the idea of minors slaughtering eachother for sport.

Whatever the case may be, March 23rd is rapidly approaching, and as someone who has read and basically enjoyed all of the novels, I'm pretty amped for Monday to get here. [Moviehole]

Jennifer Lawrence looks badass in new images from The Hunger Games

Yesterday we got our first good look at how Jennifer Lawrence will appear as Katniss Everdeen in Gary Ross's adaptation of The Hunger Games. That came via the cover of Entertainment Weekly's latest issue, and now today we've got a couple more shots. One is just a fuller version of the cover image, giving us a better look at her apparel and her trust bow. The second shows more of her surroundings, the dreaded forest that fans of Suzanne Collins' novels know is the setting for the Games, where kids are sent to kill each other for the amusement of the ruling government. Thanks to The Film Stage for these new scans....

I continue to be impressed. After seeing Lawrence in the clips from X-men: First Class and then again in The Beaver, she seemed to be too pretty and fragile for a role as rigorous and frankly ugly as this. But she's got the look, and the outfit they worked up for her is spot on.

In case you're straining your eyes to read what the print says in that image, it goes something like this...

Katniss’ Costume: When it comes to the dazzling attire Katniss will wear when she’s interviewed in front of the Capital audience, Lawrence couldn’t care less. But she was plenty vocal on the subject of her arena outfit – the survivalist-style clothing (seen here) that she wears while fighting for her life. “I’m going to be doing a lot of my own stunts,” says Lawrence. “I want to make sure I can run and jump and climb. I’ve been driving [the costume designer] crazy with the boots: ‘You have to fix this here, you have to make it lighter here, you have to open it up here.’ The dresses I don’t care about them. Just put them on me. It’s like Oscar season again.”

I told Gary, ‘I totally understand if you don’t hire me, but please remember that after Katniss shoots a bow and kills someone, her face cannot be badass. It has to be broken.”
