Review: 'Wolves' starring Lucas Till and Jason Momoa

David Hayter wrote the first two X-men movies, the second considered one of the best early crop of superhero flicks. Lucas Till starred as Havok in X-men: First Class and X-men: Days of Future Past. So it's no surprise that when the two got together for Hayter's directorial debut, Wolves, the result is something that resembles a superhero-style origin story, only one that involves big, hairy, scary werewolves and some True Blood-style lunacy.

While the effects are a little on the cheap side, it adds to the sexy, crazy B-movie vibe. Till plays Caden, the All-American high school kid; star quarterback with the hot girlfriend and all. But then he starts undergoing some weird changes that have nothing to do with adolescence. Of course we know what's going on; he's changing into a werewolf, and after a couple of violent outbursts lead to the deaths of people he loves, Cayden hightails it out of town. After encountering a one-eyed ruffian who shares his lycanthropic traits, Cayden winds up in the mysterious town of Lupine Ridge, which has earned its name for reasons that are obvious to everyone but our hero.

The fur starts to fly when the needlessly convoluted plot begins to focus on Cayden's true origins. The family he thought he knew was obviously a lie, and it turns out his bloodline extends to some of Lupine Ridge's most foul members of society. One of those is the rough 'n rugged Connor, the meanest, nastiest wolf in town who commands a veritable army of redneck wolves of lesser strength and wits. Soon Caleb is defending the good wolves (and one human woman who loves hairy guys) of Lupine Ridge from Connor, who wants to keep the bloodline pure by any means necessary. Sounds a little bit like Magneto, but on a smaller scale, doesn't it?

Hayter is good at this stuff, mixing the absurd with feral cruelty in equal proportions. Momoa looms large as Connor, an alpha dog vicious enough to literally sick his pack of wolves on a friend then roast him for dinner, cackling with maniacal glee the entire time. Till, who was perfect for the bland as toast Havok (he's like that in the comics, too), shows a bit more fire as Cayden, but he's overshadowed by Momoa's presence. Wolves is silly, campy fun (with lots of hot werewolf sex!), but it's smart enough to try and not be anything more than that. It's a film with bite, and thankfully there isn't a single vampire in sight.

Wolves is available now On Demand.

Jason Momoa is a Big Bad Wolf in Red Band Trailer for 'Wolves'

Jason Momoa has built a pretty good career playing fearsome savages in Game of Thrones and Conan the Barbarian, and he'll apparently play a much tougher version of Aquaman than we've ever seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But to see Momoa at his most feral you'll want to check out his next film, the campy, bloody action flick Wolves, directed by X-men scribe David Hayter.

A new red band trailer for the film has been released and this looks like some lost episode of HBO's True Blood or something. Momoa stars alongside Lucas Till (Havok in X-men: First Class) in the story of Cayden Richards, a kid accused of murdering his parents who stumbles into the town of Lupine Ridge, which *shocker* is populated by a clan of werewolves. There Cayden explores his mysterious past, falls in love, and tries not to become prey.

Wolves hits theaters Nov. 14th and VOD two days later. Check out a red and green band trailer for it below.

Check Out the 'X-men: Days of Future Past' Clip From 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Credits

If you hung around until after The Amazing Spider-Man 2's credits rolled then you were in for a surprise treat. At the end of it was this scene from 20th Century Fox's X-men: Days of Future Past, which is a weird bit of cross-promotion considering Spider-Man is under Sony's umbrella. The reason for it is that director Marc Webb still has a film left to complete with Fox Searchlight after (500) Days of Summer, and this was the compromise the studios made so that he could helm The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The scene gives us a glimpse at some important characters in the X-men mythos, one being a young William Stryker, who we saw as the villain in X2, and Alex "Havok" Summers played by the returning Lucas Till from X-men: First Class. We also see a younger version of Toad and a couple of other mutants who join up alongside Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique.

X-men: Days of Future Past opens May 23rd. [IGN]

Jane Levy and Lucas Till Strap In for 'Monster Trucks'

Look what The LEGO Movie hath wrought! Actually, the smashing success of that film may or may not have anything to do with a sudden flood of toy movies headed our way, but it certainly didn't help. And since studios and toy companies are more intent than ever on repackaging old toys into something new and marketable, we're now getting a movie based on Hasbro's Monster Trucks. Isn't this sort of redundant with a Hot Wheels movie already in the works? Eh, whatever.

Anyway, Monster Trucks was first revealed last year but now it's definitely moving forward as a live-action/CG hybrid directed by Ice Age's Chris Wedge. The Wrap reports that Paramount is eying Jane Levy (Evil Dead, Suburgatory) and Lucas Till (X-men: First Class) to lead the film, which they hope will turn into "a 'Transformers'-like franchise". Till, who is reprising his role as Havok in X-men: Days of Future Past, will play the generic "bad boy with a good heart" (seriously, it says that), while Levy is described as a girl who is like what Tina Fey would be in high school.  So...smart, snarky, neurotic, approachable, unaware of her beauty. Got it, and ugh.

No details on the plot cooked up by writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, but the toys are basically just....well, monster trucks. Maybe we'll get lucky and it will be a horror with the trucks gaining sentience and trampling over the city? Probably not. Monster Trucks films this summer and rolls into theaters May 29th 2015.

Jason Momoa Howls in First Trailer for 'Wolves'

In the same way that vampires are in desperate need of getting their mojo back (Vampire Academy didn't do the trick), werewolf movies could also use a bit more bite. Unfortunately most of them seem to be stuck on the use of werewolves in a coming-of-age context (like MTV's Teen Wolf), and that seems to be the route David Hayter, writer of X-men and Watchmen, is taking with his directorial debut, Wolves.

Starring Lucas Till and Jason Momoa as a pipe-smoking lycanthrope villain, the film centers on a all-American high school teen who wakes up to find his family murdered and his body undergoing animalistic transformations. Led to the isolated town of Lupine Ridge, the name seemingly a dead giveaway, he finds himself in the middle of a war between rival werewolf packs.

This looks pretty cheesy, especially every single scene that has Momoa in it, but at least there are plenty of fangs and blood. Wolves is expected to open this summer.

Comic-Con: First Look at Omar Sy as Bishop in 'X-men: Days of Future Past' Portraits

Although an X-men panel hasn't officially been announced for Comic-Con, 20th Century Fox is pulling out all of the stops in hyping X-men: Days of Future Past here. The latest are a series of character portraits for the film, featuring Ian McKellen as Magneto, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havok, Daniel Cudmore as Colossus, and we also have our first look at Omar Sy as the time-lost X-man, Bishop. I didn't think they could do it, but Sy actually pulls it off. Check out those images below.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens on May 23rd 2014.

Jeremy Irvine, Alex Pettyfer, and Lucas Till vying for male lead in 'Divergent'

Twilight is outta here(maybe!!!), and Summit Entertainment has been none too subtle in trying to find another young adult franchise to take its place. Their best shot may be Divergent, which is based on the best-selling novel by Veronica Roth. With Shailene Woodley(The Descendants) already in place, the search for her male co-star has narrowed to just a few candidates.

Last fall we learned that Lucas Till(X-Men: First Class), Jack Reynor(newly signed for Transformers 4), Brenton Thwaites(Maleficent), and Luke Bracey(Monte Carlo) had tested for the gig, but Variety now throws Jeremy Irvine(War Horse) and Alex Pettyfer(Magic Mike) into the mix. They'll test later this week, along with Till, so it sounds like the final decision is going to come down to those three. Expect it to arrive shortly, as they need to get moving this spring so Woodley has enough time to jump into The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Divergent sounds a lot like The Hunger Games, but I think there's enough of a difference for it to stand apart. The story centers on 16-year old Beatrice Prior(Woodley), who lives in a future version of Chicago where society is divided into five factions dedication to a particular virtue: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Forced to choose where her allegiances lie, Beatrice makes a decision that could change everything.

Directed by Neil Burger, Divergent is expected to open on March 21st 2014.
