Wild New Images from 'Mad Max: Fury Road' starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron

While audiences bemoan the abundance of sequels in today's movie landscape, the simple fact is that they sell. People flock to what is familiar, which is why you sometimes see franchises reborn after literally decades of sitting idle. Sometimes that works, often it doesn't, but in the case of George Miller's years-in-the-making Mad Max: Fury Road, the anticipation to revisit the desert apocalypse of the prior films is simply off the charts.

After two hotly-received trailers, a new batch of images have released which give us another look at how wild this film is going to get. Just sit back and take in the sheer detail of the costumes; from the spiked masks, medal-adorned suits, and intricately carved chest tattoos. There's even Charlize Theron in the role of Furiosa, who appears to lose an arm at some point. And of course in the center of it all is Tom Hardy as Mad Max himself, who must survive the harsh landscape while being chased by some dude named Immortan Joe.

Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15th.

New Trailer for 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Brings Fire and Blood

After a thirty year wait, fans finally got a chance to see footage from George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road at Comic-Con, and it completely blew the roof off.  The amazing, dust-covered visuals and relentless action were enough to make us forget the oft-delayed and troubled production, making it one of next year's most anticipated flicks. And now there's even more reason to be excited with the release of a brand new trailer that takes Max to the extreme.

Tom Hardy takes over the role of Mad Max that was made famous by Mel Gibson, with the apocalpytic warrior teaming up with Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to flee across the harsh desert wastelands. She may hold the key to restoring order to the devastated world, but only if they manage to survive. The early word is we shouldn't expect to hear much dialogue, but if the film is going to look this good then it won't matter.

Tom Hardy Gets Mad in New 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Images

Thirty years is a long time to wait for anything, but in the world of Hollywood movies it's an eternity. So it's been a little surprising the excitement there seems to be for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, and after the intense, action-packed Comic-Con trailer that energy has only been cranked up about a thousand notches.

Warner Bros. is keeping the marketing train rolling with a handful of new images featuring a lean 'n mean Tom Hardy as Mad Max. The film is being billed as a reboot but to my eyes it appears to more of a side story loosely connected to the Mel Gibson movie. Co-starring Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, the film has Max chased by marauders across the post-apocalyptic desert wasteland in a War Rig. It's basically one long chase sequence, and if audiences love it the sequel is written and ready to go.

Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15th 2015.

'Mad Max: Fury Road' Sequel's Script Already Finished

While the Hall H experience at Comic-Con can largely be summed up as disappointing this year, one film that received an extremely enthusiastic reaction was George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road. The footage presented there was met with near universal acclaim (although I wasn't totally blown away) by those who have been waiting an eternity for this film to happen, and now that it's finished Miller is already talking sequel. What's surprising is that he said during a press conference the script for it is already finished...

Miller: “In order to tell this story, we came up with two others. We’ve written the screenplay of one and the novelization of another, but it’s a very rough novel. We kept working on them while we were working on other things.”

Some years ago the plan was for Miller to film two Mad Max movies back-to-back. One was Fury Road led by Tom Hardy and the other was Mad Max: Furiosa and would center on Charlize Theron's character. That isn't what ended up happening, but is Furiosa what he's talking about? Probably, and hopefully as Miller continues to make the rounds he'll reveal more. Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15th 2015.

*UPDATE* Comic-Con: 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Trailer and Character Posters

The Hall H program isn't over at Comic-Con, but the question still remains: Who owns the day so far? Warner Bros. kicked the show off right with Batman v Superman, but ask some others and they might tell you the day belongs to the mad, as in Mad Max: Fury Road.

George Miller, who directed the original movies some 30 years ago and is back for the sequel, was on hand to present the first footage from the film, which naturally showcases Tom Hardy in the role made famous by Mel Gibson. The connection to those movies was made early and often in a highlight reel that led directly into the contemporary version. While the clip probably won't hit the web for awhile yet, Warner Bros. has released four new character posters that capture some moments from today's footage.

UPDATE: And now the trailer is here! Check it out below. The trailer really captures that Fury Road will basically just be a long chase movie, for better or for worse, but the overall design is certainly interesting. That dubstep-influenced score, though ... not so much.

Check out the trailer and character posters below. Also starring Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and Zoe Kravitz, Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15th 2015.

Comic-Con: It's a Lovely Day for the First 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Poster

Warner Bros. will be unveiling footage from George Miller's forever-developing and much-maligned Mad Max: Fury Road here at Comic-Con. And to celebrate, they have now released the very first poster featuring Tom Hardy as the road warrior himself and a tagline that reads "What a Lovely Day". Not that anything can ever be lovely in the stark, apocalyptic wasteland in which the fourth film in the franchise is set. Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley will co-star when the film opens May 15th 2015. Here's the synopsis:

Mad Max: Fury Road is a reboot of the adventure franchise that began with Mad Max in 1979, starring Mel Gibson. George Miller, the director of the original film and its sequel, is back behind the camera, working from a script he co-wrote with first-time writer Nick Lathouris. Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Tom Hardy) a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. Meanwhile, Furiosa (Charlize Theron) is a woman of action who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Comic-Con: Warner Bros. to Unveil 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' and 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

Every year we expect to see a huge Comic-Con presence out of Warner Bros., and those expectations have only increased since Man of Steel and the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The studio has already released their schedule on the TV side of things, but now we're getting a look at what feature films they'll be presenting in Hall H and fans will be surprised there isn't a superhero movie amongst them....yet.

On Saturday July 26th, Warner Bros. plans to unveil Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Jupiter Ascending. Obviously we've already seen a ton from the latter so hopefully it won't get too much time on stage. But The Hobbit and Mad Max will be our best looks yet at the anticipated films, with both Peter Jackson and George Miller on hand to present them. What, no Tom Hardy? No Charlize Theron? Come on, folks! The studio also plans a special pre-Con screening of their upcoming disaster flick, Into the Storm, and I'll do my best to get there and let you know how it is. No promises.

So what's the deal?  Why no Batman v Superman? Well, just because it's not listed officially doesn't mean there won't be some surprises. It was at Comic-Con last year when the first Batman v Superman announcement was made unexpectedly, and I expect Warner Bros. has something big planned they don't want spoiled. Maybe a teaser trailer?

Here's the full press release:

Warner Bros. Entertainment will plant its flag at Comic-Con International: San Diego this year with a huge presence, with each individual division touting its upcoming offerings, including Film, Television, Interactive and Home Entertainment, as well as a variety of product from DC Entertainment, whose celebrations in honor of 75 years of one of the world’s most beloved Super Heroes—Batman—will be in full swing.

First Look at Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

Years in the making and met with seemingly endless obstacles, including Mother Nature, George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road is a film fans have been waiting for a long time. And through all of the various troubles, Miller has stuck pretty close to his vision of not simply doing what was done in the Mel Gibson movies. And with Tom Hardy set to take on the iconic role of "Mad" Max Rockatansky, the film promises to have just as much action as before.

Entertainment Weekly has Hardy and Charlize Theron on the cover of their latest issues, which comes with a number of new photos giving us the best look yet at the film. And it looks gritty and completely bombed-out, especially Theron who looks like she just survived a nuclear disaster. The plot for this one is pretty straight forward with Max racing across a desert waste land in a War Rig. Miller originally planned this to be the start of a new trilogy and that will probably still be the case assuming the film is a success.

Mel Gibson Won't Cameo in 'Mad Max: Fury Road'; Film Testing "Extremely Well'

By the time George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road hits theaters in 2015, it will have been three years since filming began. After all the delays and other on-set troubles it'll be quite the accomplishment to complete it at all. Production continues to roll on the Tom Hardy-led pic, but Miller is feeling pretty good about how it's been received up to this point, telling the Sydney Morning Herald...

Miller: "Our film, luckily after a ridiculous amount of work, is testing extremely well. We're very happy. There has been a lot of doubt about it, [people saying] 'it took so long', but Warners have delayed it until 2015 to go into the top weekend of the year.''

"Ridiculous" is putting it mildly, but at least he's getting some help from the studio who wisely decided to bump the film to 2015 to avoid international conflicts with the World Cup. Of course, that time also puts it in the thick of the busiest movie year ever.

And as for those rumors that the original Mad Max himself, Mel Gibson, would make a cameo? Miller says it ain't happenin'...

Miller: 'It would have been nice somehow but, no, it's not true.''

Oh well. Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15th 2015.

Finally, 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Lands a Release Date

First up, after years of development and delays caused by everything including torrential storms. George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road will open on May 15th 2015. Well, at least we hope it will. Filming began three years ago on what is expected to be a new trilogy featuring Tom Hardy in the role made famous by Mel Gibson in three films starting in 1979.

Co-starring Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and possibly Mel Gibson (as some guy named "Drifter"), the film has Max racing across Wasteland in a war rig driven by Imperator Furiosa.

We'll see if the date sticks because Mad Max: Fury Road is surrounded by hardcore competition. On May 1st is Marvel's likely juggernaut The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and then on May 22nd comes another Disney gut punch when Brad Bird and George Clooney's Tomorrowland opens.

Better Look at Tom Hardy in 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road has been in the works for a very long time, and fans of Max Rocktansky have been waiting since 1985 for a proper follow-up. Considering Miller just tacked on a few more weeks of additional shooting, some word is starting to leak out that the film might not be ready until 2015. We'll have to wait and see if that ends up being the case, but for now at least we have a clearer look at what Tom Hardy will look like as Mad Max.

AICN uncovered this image, which is a cleaner, uncropped version of the autographed photo from a few months ago. It's considerably sharper than the prior one, and includes a motorcycle that Hardy should look pretty cool kicking up desert dust on. The story has Mad Max in a place known as Wasteland, where he encounters a War Rig driven by Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron. Zoe Kravitz, Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Nathan Jones co-star, with Mel Gibson supposedly making a cameo as "Drifter".

After such a long wait I'm curious if there are still people out there excited over Mad Max? Let us know what you think of Fury Road and of this shot of Hardy.
