The Hottest Leading Ladies of 2014

James Brown told us "It's a man's world", but the ladies own us guys heart and soul. Every year I like to take a look back at some of the leading ladies who really got my engine going over the last twelve months, both with their stunning beauty and incredible performances. While I could easily just chart them based on who was sexy, that wold lead to Kate Upton being on here for The Other Woman, and that simply can not be allowed to happen. Are there some personal favorites on here who probably wouldn't turn up on other lists? Absolutely. You all know my thing for Zoe Bell. But can I also say that every woman on this list did tremendous work this year? Damn right...even if some of the movies they were in weren't so great. Frankly, I like the idea of any list that allows me to put Zoey Deutch alongside Jessica Chastain. Plus it's not completely lost on me that Rosario Dawson has now made the list two years in a row. Rosario Dawson is everything. Nor can I escape the fact that most of the roles these women played were either psychotic or incredibly violent.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the hottest leading ladies of 2014, and be sure to check out our other "End of the Year" lists!

Zoe Bell- Raze

Tessa Thompson- Dear White People

Stacy Martin- Nymphomaniac

Zoey Deutch- Vampire Academy

Eva Green- 300: Rise of an Empire and White Bird in a Blizzard

Shailene Woodley- White Bird in a Blizzard

Emily Blunt- Edge of Tomorrow

Emily Browning- God Help the Girl

Rosamund Pike- Gone Girl

Stacy Martin Joins 'The Childhood of a Leader'; 'The Martian' Adds Donald Glover; Hugo Weaving meets 'The Dressmaker'

Nymphomaniac breakout Stacy Martin will take on another sure-to-be controversial project, joining Robert Pattinson in Brady Corbet's directorial debut, The Childhood of a Leader. Written by Corbet and Mona Fastvold (The Sleepwalker), with Tim Roth and Berenice Bejo co-starring, the film is described as “a chilling fable about the rise of fascism in the 20th Century” and follows an American living in 1918 France whose experiences there give birth to a "terrifying ego". Martin will play the boy's French teacher. [ScreenDaily]

Ridley Scott has added Donald Glover (Community) to the otherwise amazing cast of The Martian. Sorry, he does nothing for me. Anyway, the film stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Mackenzie Davis and Jeff Daniels in the story of an astronaut, one of the first to ever step foot on Mars, who is abandoned after an accident and must stay alive long enough to be rescued. Also coming aboard is Aksel Hennie, best known for starring in Headhunters. Glover will play a NASA employee while Hennie is a fellow astronaut. [TheWrap]

Perennial tough evil guy Hugo Weaving will play a cross-dressing police sergeant in Jocelyn Moorhouse's The Dressmaker. Starring Kate Winslet, Isla Fisher, Liam Hemsworth, and Elizabeth Debicki, the adaptation of Rosalie Ham's book centers on Tilly, a scorned woman who returns to the small country hometown she fled after as a child after being accused of murder. This is hardly new territory for Weaving who played a drag queen in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Stacy Martin Joins 'High-Rise'; Pierce Brosnan Eyes 'Sympathy for the Devil'

* After baring all (and then some) in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac Vol. I & 2, Stacy Martin has decided to trade sex for some good old fashioned violence. She's joining Ben Wheatley's adaptation of High-Rise, which already has a great cast with Tom Hiddleston, Elisabeth Moss, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, and Luke Evans. The JG Ballard novel takes place in an isolated luxury high-rise and its occupants as they descend into a primal, tribal society. [TB]

* Who lit a fire under Pierce Brosnan all of the sudden? Maybe he's feeling nostalgic over his James Bond days but he's been keeping busy in the action genre of late, and now he may add another thriller to his schedule. Brosnan is circling a role in the supernatural film Sympathy for the Devil, directed by John Marks and follows a "television journalist who faces off against a criminal mastermind who feeds on the souls of victims of mass murder."  Brosnan will next slip into spy mode for The November Man, opening at the end of summer.

Sundance Review: Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac Vol. 1'

A select number of eager moviegoers were treated to an unexpected surprise here at the Sundance Film Festival. Offered a chance to attend a secret screening, nobody seemed to have a clue what the movie would actually be, or why these people were chosen to attend. Rumors flew around wildly all day, with a colleague and I speculating it would be from a director closely associated with the festival. Maybe Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel? An early cut of Kevin Smith's Tusk? Turns out we were way off, as the film was actually Lars von Trier's anticipated sexual epic, Nymphomaniac, and after the shock washed over the crowd it was followed by a round of cheers.

Although the film hasn't exactly been shrouded in secrecy, nobody quite new what to expect from the controversial director, who has frequently pushed boundaries on subjects more benign than insatiable sexual desire. So what would he do with a taboo subject such as this? What levels of sexual deviancy would we be treated to? And how many times will we be subjected to Shia LaBeauf in the buff? Turns out Nymphomaniac, at least in this first chapter, is probably the director's most accessible film.

That's not to say it isn't graphic, because it most certainly is and some will undoubtedly take offense to some of that. But those folks probably aren't coming to see a movie titled Nymphomaniac, anyway. Blaring thrash metal music against a serene, snowy backdrop begins the tale of Joe, played with incredible angst by von Trier's muse, Charlotte Gainsbourg. Found beaten and bruised in an alley by the kindly and eccentric Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard), she's taken back to his simple home to convalesce, only to repeatedly insist how unworthy she is of his help. To prove just how terrible a person she is, Joe regales him with stories of her sexual adventures, beginning by telling him "I discovered my cunt at two years old". Won't get dialogue like that from a Scorsese flick.

The first volume is broken down into four chapters, with the first titled "The Compleat Angler", and for very good reason. The asexual, intellectual Seligman repeatedly interrupts Joe's stories of sexual conquest with banal comparisons to his favorite pasttime: fly fishing. While these start off as very funny for showing how square Seligman is, the joke grows old quickly and his detailed explanations a drag on a pace best described as deliberate. In solemn tone Joe continues her story of early sexual awakening, beginning as a child by splashing naked on the bathroom floor; then in gym class during the rope climb. Reaching her teenage years (then played by Stacy Martin, a ringer for Gainsbourg) when sexual experimentation normally begins, she meets strong-handed drifter Jerome (Shia LaBeouf) who takes her virginity with eight thrusts, counted in big bold numbers displayed across the screen.

From then on Joe is a sexual force, and with her best friend B (Sophie Kennedy Clark) begin a club with a rule never to sleep with a man more than once. A competition develops between them to have sex with as many men as possible, highlighted by a train ride in which they seduce and nail nearly a dozen men apiece. Flashbacks to Joe's upbringing with her sensitive father (Christian Slater) and distant mother (Connie Nielsen) establish her as someone who has always been aware of herself and her effect on men. But what you don't find is any hint of enjoyment in her sexual deeds. For her it's a primal calling, the lust isn't for erotic pleasure but for the power she can hold over others. There's no real value in sex for her, and love rarely enters the equation: "Love is just lust with jealousy added" seems to be her personal philosophy, at least until Jerome unexpectedly re-enters the picture (he seems to pop up randomly) and she begins to feel stirrings of something more.

This being a von Trier film, the humor is often tinged with a touch of madness. He often finds humor in the physical form, in particular male genitalia, such as in a montage of the hundreds of penises Joe has experienced. She makes mention of screwing 10 men a day at her peak, shuttling them in and out of her home like it was Union Station. When one of her conquests turns out to be married, he leaves his wife (Uma Thurman) only to have her show up at Joe's house with their kids to lay the greatest guilt trip in the history of cinema. There's mention of a "whoring bed", another phrase you'll only find in a von Trier movie. There's a playfulness to the high-minded conversations between Joe and Seligman, and one can almost sense the director's devilish grin with every cheesy sex metaphor he conjures up.

Much has been made about the amount of hardcore sex, but minus a couple of genitalia shots it's pretty tame and totally simulated. A scene where teenaged Joe performs oral sex comes (no pun intended) to an oozing climax, but otherwise there's little here that should make anyone too uncomfortable. With her hushed voice and hard features, Gainsbourg always makes for the perfect tortured soul, and captures Joe's conflicted mental state. Skarsgard, who has shown his comic chops many times before in other directors' films, gets the bulk of the laughs through Seligman's arm-chair psychology. Martin has the largest role by far, and she has a chilly air about her that matches Gainsbourg's. The biggest distraction is LaBeouf, whose parts unknown accent is marginally less laughable than his supposed manliness. Really?

Von Trier never wanted his 5 1/2 hour sexual opus to be split in two parts, and it's made clear from the abrupt, oddly-placed ending that it never should have been. Nymphomaniac isn't just a chance for von Trier to hit all of the politically incorrect G-spots, it's a real film with a fully-realized female protagonist who has lived a life most people will never understand. Joe is a fascinating, tragic figure and her story is only just beginning.

New Trailer for Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac Vol. 1'

The version of Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 that American audiences will see is apparently very different than the extremely graphic director's cut that recently played in Berlin. The edited version debuted on our shores just a few weeks ago at Sundance, and it was there that I saw it found it to be provocative, but also the director's most accessible film yet. And now those who are inclined to go on this sexual odyssey with von Trier (burn that into your mind's eye!) have a new trailer to feast on.

Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Stacy Martin, and Shia LaBeouf, the first volume has the titular figure recounting her sordid sexual history to the fly-fishing academic who discovered her unconscious in an alley. While the footage plays up the salacious elements, the finished film is one of von Trier's smartest and funniest, offering up a look at a strong woman who refuses to be categorized as a victim. Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 hits VOD on March 6th, then theaters on March 21st.

Fiery New Trailer for 'Nymphomaniac Vol. 2'

After taking in the super-secret screening of Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 at the Sundance Film Festival, my impression was that Lars von Trier has been pulling a bit of a prank on everyone. The trailers for the film were wild, chaotic, and suggested a sexual perversion that would keep many people away. The end result was something entirely different, though, and I described it as his most accessible film yet. But at the same time it looked like von Trier was saving most of his boundary-pushing for the second volume, and evidence of that comes in this new trailer for it.

While this trailer is actually pretty tame, with no nudity but plenty of bondage, it's exactly for that reason I expect it to go totally over-the-top. In other words, von Trier is pulling another bait and switch on the audience. The second volume continues the story of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stacy Martin) as she tells the story of her sexual history to an intellectual (Stellan Skarsgard) who rescued her after a mysterious beating.

Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 hits VOD on March 6th, followed in theaters on March 21st. Nymphomaniac Vol. 2 hits VOD April 3rd, then in theaters April 18th.

New Clip from 'Nymphomaniac' Takes Us to "The Little Organ School"

Oh, that clever Lars von Trier! Considering the increasingly graphic promos for Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac, he knows exactly what he's doing by titling the fifth chapter The Little Organ School. The latest clip does include an organ, but it's the kind offering a rich chorale composition by Bach, and playing into the idea of polyphony, in which three independent melodies combine to reach harmony.

Of course, that idea plays out in a way that is distinctly von Trier, and this very NSFW clip has Stacy Martin as Young Joe having sex with Shia Labeouf and another man, possibly Nicholas Bro. There's also some stuff with a cheetah devouring its prey, and there's also some choppy black and white footage of a naked guy walking like he's on the evolutionary scale. Not sure what it all amounts to, but I'm fascinated to find out.

Denmark gets the cinematic gift of Nymphomaniac on Christmas Day. No release date for us just yet.

More Poetry Than Sex In New Clip from 'Nymphomaniac'

As you'd expect from a film titled Nymphomaniac, sex is going to be a driving theme throughout, but it's obvious now that Lars von Trier is going to use it to push a number of different ideas. He'll present them in a number of different styles, as well, and as each new clip debuts they all have felt completely different than the one that preceded it.

The latest clip is another tonal shift, done in a single meditative shot of the lead character Joe (Stacy Martin, Charlotte Gainsbourg) walking towards a hospital while a narrator (kind of sounds like Stellan Skarsgard?) delivers a solemn reading from Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall Of The House Of Usher.  This is taken from Chapter 4: Delirium, and the accompanying text is as brief as the clip is somber....

Confusion. Delusion. Hallucination. The nymphomaniac's father dies.

Nymphomaniac arrives in Denmark this Christmas, with von Trier unveiling the hardcore version at Cannes. The rest of us should have a chance to see the regular version before then, perhaps in early 2014.

Uma Thurman Checks Out the Whoring Bed in New 'Nymphomaniac' Clip

“Would it be alright if I showed the children the whoring bed?”

Oh Lars von Trier, you creepy old bastard, you slay me. After two relatively tame clips from his sexapalooza Nymphomaniac, this latest clip is more than a little disturbing. Still, there's no actual sex or vulgarity, but it's deeply uncomfortable and dare I say a little bit funny? At least the reaction on the face of Stacy Martin, playing a young Charlotte Gainsbourg, is priceless. The guy's face is pretty comical as well.

The clip comes from Chapter 3, titled Mrs. H., and gives us our first look at Uma Thurman as an upset wife confronting the titular nymphomaniac for having an affair with her husband. She figures the best way to do this is drag their smiling children (smiling???) into her home and show them "daddy's favorite place", aka the whoring bed. Here's the synopsis for chapter three:
Keeping track of a large network of lovers isn't always easy, and Joe is soon confronted with the unpleasant consequences of being a nymphomaniac.
After all, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.
Have I mentioned how this movie needs to get here ASAP? It won't be hitting any of the major festivals, surprisingly, and opens in Denmark on Christmas Day. Why can't we get a holiday surprise like that?

"Penetrating" NSFW Image of Shia LaBeouf in Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'

While Lars von Trier's eight-part sexual epic, Nymphomaniac, is skipping both the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals, the controversial director continues to build up a lot of buzz for what is sure to be another polarizing effort. At least among cinephiles, it's a big deal any time von Trier makes as big of a show as he seems to be with Nymphomaniac, dishing out new footage from the erotic thriller monthly in a deliberately tantalizing tease. Tomorrow will see the reveal of another clip, this one taken from the second chapter, but before that we have another photo that you probably shouldn't open from your office cubicle.

The image shows Shia LaBeouf getting it on with Stacy Martin, who we saw in last month's clip. Martin plays the younger version of Joe, the woman we meet when she's older and portrayed by Charlotte Gainsbourg as she recounts her sexual history to a complete stranger. This image comes from chapter two, and here's von Trier's colorful description...

Chapter 2: Jerôme

"Love is just lust with jealousy added"

Though love is a shallow feeling in the eyes of the cynical nymphomaniac, young Joe is met by forces penetrating her armoured defences.

His name is Jerôme.

Heh heh...penetrating. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if tomorrow's footage finally gives us a glimpse at the graphic nature of the film, or if von Trier will continue to hold back on it. He probably doesn't want to blow his load too early...[Vulture]
