The Long-Awaited First Trailer for 'Fantastic Four' is Here!

Here it is! After months of literally nothing from Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot, yesterday we got our first official set photo and now the trailer has arrived weeks ahead of schedule. From the beginning it's been clear that Trank was working from a very different version of Marvel's "First Family" than fans were accustomed to, and with the melancholic, deep sci-fi flavor of this trailer he seems to have hit the nail on the head. And the best part is that it still keeps plenty under wraps to be discovered later. Impressive, but the key is going to be how the fanboys react.

The film stars Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm with Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom, renamed Victor Domashev. Here's the official synopsis:

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Fantastic Four opens August 7th.

Review: 'Snowpiercer' Starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, and Octavia Spencer

Will he or won't he? There's been a great deal of talk amongst cinephiles about South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer, but the "he" in question is actually Harvey Weinstein. And the question was whether we would get to see the film in full as Bong would have preferred, or if Harvey would do one of his infamous hatchet jobs, threatening to slice 20 minutes from it for American audiences who prefer their action movies brisk and short. In the end we're getting the version Bong always intended and the dystopian world he envisions is incredibly immersive and extremely thrilling....but maybe some of those edits should have been kept in.

So much about Snowpiercer goes a long way in placing it amongst the very best and smartest sci-fi movies around that any flaws prove to be glaring. What's not an issue is how Bong is able to fully realize a future world and all of its problems with a bare minimum of exposition, at least initially. Finally convinced of the threat of global warming, the world governments band together to release a substance called CW7 into the air. It works, but rather than dropping the temperature down a few degrees the world is thrust into a new Ice Age, killing all life on the planet but a handful of survivors. Somehow they all managed to board a luxury perpetual motion train known as the Snowpiercer, and now it races all around the world. If it stops everyone on board could die and humanity would be extinguished.

But that may happen anyway because the system aboard the train is divided up by social status. The dregs, society's poor, are banished to the train's tail while the elite live near the front in the lap of luxury. The downtrodden live in squalor, feasting on disgusting "protein" as their main sustenance, and suffering the wrath of train security if anyone steps out of line. There have been rebellions, all soundly defeated, but a new one is building led by the brooding hero, Curtis (Chris Evans), and his wizened old mentor, Gilliam (John Hurt). Tired of being bullied by the chittering, teeth-gnashing bureaucrat Mason (Tilda Swinton, in dork mode), Curtis, his right-hand man Edgar (Jamie Bell), and a drug-addled engineer (Song Kang-ho) gather an army and proceed to take the train car by car.

Combining brutal action with art house sensibilities, think The Raidmeets Metropolis, as the tail section survivors endure one bloody battle after another against the elite's heavily armed goon squad. Bong and screenwriter Kelly Masterson aren't content to make this just another beat 'em up, though, adding in stark social commentary and a central mystery of the train's origins for audiences to ponder. Designed often like the levels in an arcade game, each train car has a different feel and significance, like the oddball classroom led by pregnant, gun-toting schoolteacher (Alison Pill); or one glorious car built as a giant aquarium. The amount Bong is able to accomplish on a modest $40M budget is remarkable and shows his range in capturing the vibrant and unbearably grim. Not that we should be surprised at Bong's range. This is the same guy who delivered one of the great modern monster movies inThe Host, and the haunting South Korean film noir, Mother, both exceptional entries to their respective genres. The CGI gets a little dicey when the action moves, however briefly, outside the train to the frozen Earth below.

In working with a largely American audience Bong has managed to cull some memorable performances from his cast. Whatever the heck Swinton is doing with her nerdy librarian routine as Mason, she needs to keep doing it because she is simply amazing and a lot of fun. Supporting players Octavia Spencer, Ed Harris, Bell, Kang-ho, and Ko Ah-sung bring a ton of depth to characters that don't all get a lot of screen time. Evans shows off the physicality and stoic personality we've seen him employ as Captain America, but his character is probably the least defined of the bunch. That was probably done to maintain some level of secrecy but it becomes an issue later on we need to believe the choices he makes.

After a certain point the film begins to lose some of the momentum it left the station with as questions get answered and characters' true natures are revealed. This is probably the area where Weinstein was hoping to do some chopping as the final act is bogged down by a lot of people standing around explaining what was left out before. The energy comes to a dead halt as new surprises emerge seemingly out of nowhere with one major character twist lacking potency because of it.

It's become a common complaint that Hollywood doesn't offer enough in the way of heady sci-fi movies but the truth is that dynamic is changing. In a way it's ironic that Snowpiercer isn't getting a wider release because it pulls no punches either in brains or brawn and should appeal to audiences of every stripe.

Red Band Trailer for Sci-Fi Epic 'Snowpiercer'

Bong Joon-Ho's highly anticipated Snowpiercer will be opening the LA Film Festival in June, indicating once and for all that the arguments are over in regards to the final version. Harvey Weinstein won't chop out 20 minutes as he was tempted to do, and Joon-Ho will get the full director's cut he wanted. It'll only open in limited release, but hey, those are the breaks.

An action-packed red band trailer and some new images have been released for the futuristic film. Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, Octavia Spencer, Song Kang-ho, John Hurt, and Ed Harris star, with the story set in a future when an attempt to end global warming thrusts the world into a new ice age. What remains of humanity travels the world in a train propelled by a perpetual motion engine, until a violent class war erupts amongst the passengers.

Despite the mixed response it earned on the festival circuit, Snowpiercer is one film I'm dying to see on June 27th.

New Red Band Trailer for Irvine Welsh's 'Filth' Starring James McAvoy

Before James McAvoy plays the altruistic, peaceful Charles Xavier in X-men: Days of Future Past, he'll indulge in some good ol' fashioned, Irvine Welsh-inspired debauchery in Filth. Based on the author's sex and drug-fueled novel, the story follows degenerate cop Bruce Robertson as he does a half-assed job investigating a murder and earning a promotion. We've seen plenty of NSFW footage already but a new red band trailer ups the ante yet again, with McAvoy looking like he's having more fun than at any point in his career.

Co-starring Imogen Poots, Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, and Eddie Marsan with direction by Jon S. Baird, Filth hits VOD on April 24th and theaters May 30th.

The New 'Fantastic Four' Have Been Revealed!

After months of rumors and various casting reports, Josh Trank has decided on the young cast for his reboot of the Fantastic Four. When we spoke to Miles Teller some weeks ago he sounded pretty sure that a decision would be made in just a few weeks, and not only was he right but he has indeed been set to play Reed Richard aka Mr. Fantastic. He'll be joined by Kate Mara as Sue Storm aka the Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm aka the Thing.

Jordan was amongst the very first mentioned for film, stirring up a great deal of controversy in the process due to him being African-American. We'll see how Trank intends to handle that but the most likely scenario is that one or both of the Storms are adopted. Or they come from a merged family like The Brady Bunch, which could cause some interesting sibling tension.  Jordan, along with Teller and Mara, were high on Trank's list from the beginning and it sounds like their deals are mostly in place. Bell was a recent contender and is in "heavy talks" to finalize his deal.

The combination of Teller and Jordan have been busy, recently starring in That Awkward Moment and signing on for an upcoming heist thriller. Mara can be seen on Netflix series House of Cards and has a role in Wally Pfister's directorial debut, Transcendence. Bell will appear soon in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac, and has some experience with motion-capture roles having starred in The Adventures of Tintin.

Filming on Fantastic Four is to begin next month for release on June 19th 2015.  [TheWrap]

Fiery New Trailer for 'Nymphomaniac Vol. 2'

After taking in the super-secret screening of Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 at the Sundance Film Festival, my impression was that Lars von Trier has been pulling a bit of a prank on everyone. The trailers for the film were wild, chaotic, and suggested a sexual perversion that would keep many people away. The end result was something entirely different, though, and I described it as his most accessible film yet. But at the same time it looked like von Trier was saving most of his boundary-pushing for the second volume, and evidence of that comes in this new trailer for it.

While this trailer is actually pretty tame, with no nudity but plenty of bondage, it's exactly for that reason I expect it to go totally over-the-top. In other words, von Trier is pulling another bait and switch on the audience. The second volume continues the story of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stacy Martin) as she tells the story of her sexual history to an intellectual (Stellan Skarsgard) who rescued her after a mysterious beating.

Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 hits VOD on March 6th, followed in theaters on March 21st. Nymphomaniac Vol. 2 hits VOD April 3rd, then in theaters April 18th.

Jamie Bell Has a Gift for Charlotte Gainsbourg in NSFW 'Nymphomaniac' Clip

After the erotic and extremely red band trailer for Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac, everything is seeming tame by comparison. That even applies to the latest Nymphomaniac clip, which is still very NSFW and fleshes out one of the prominent scenes from the trailer. Titled Chapter 6: The Eastern and the Western Church (The Silent Duck), it features Jamie Bell presenting a gift to Charlotte Gainsbourg, which turns out to be a whip with the word "Fido" written into it. She then assumes the position in preparation of a good lashing, which we know he's more than willing to give.

Thanks to Gainsbourg and von Trier for providing a shot that's just another reason to be thankful for this holiday. Nymphomaniac will open in the U.S. next year. Here's the clip and chapter description:

“The Eastern Church is often referred to as the Church of Joy, and the Western Church as the Church of Suffering.

Should you make a mental journey from Rome eastwards, you’ll find that you move away from guilt and pain, and towards light and joy.

However, what Joe comes to learn is that pain and pleasure can be closer than you’d think.”

Sex, Fire, Rock 'N Roll in Very NSFW Trailer for Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'

Oh yeah, Fifty Shades of Grey will have NOTHING on Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac. Period. Over the last few months we've been treated to numerous clips from the controversial filmmaker's two-part sexual epic, and they apparently barely scratch the surface of the scandalous lengths he's willing to go. You thought all of those orgasmic movie posters were something? Wait until you get a load (pun not intended!!) of the first trailer, which is obviously NSFW.

As you might expect there's tons of rough sex, BDSM, spanking, screaming, fighting, fires, rock 'n roll, more screaming, blowjobs, and there's even a little lesbian action thrown in for good measure. Is this Nymphomaniac or The To-Do List? Perhaps the most compelling aspect are the numerous shifts in camera technique von Trier employs, switching up styles as we're taken through Joe's (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stacy Martin) sexual escapades. And oh yeah, that scene of Joe's father (Christian Slater) lying in the hospital bed just got even more disturbing.

It doesn't sound as if von Trier's 5 1/2 hour directors' cut is going to play Cannes like some have thought, but wherever it does play expect me to be there...if only to watch the audience squirm. Nymphomaniac hits Denmark on Christmas Day but no U.S. date just yet. Wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall when this one hits the MPAA's desk?

New Trailer for 'Snowpiercer' Starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton

The jury's out on whether Harvey Weinstein is going to slice 'n dice Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi epic, Snowpiercer, but in the meantime the film is gearing up to roll into theaters. Not here, unfortunately, as it has yet to gain a U.S. release date. Instead it will open in France next month after previously opening in Joon-ho's native South Korea. And as the release nears, a new trailer has been released that offers up the richest look yet.

Assembling a top-notch cast of Chris Evans, Alison Pill, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Ewen Bremner, Song Kang-ho, John Hurt, Ed Harris, and Octavia Spencer, the film is set in a future when humanity has been wiped out by a failed attempt to end global warming. The few who remain travel the frozen world in a perpetually-moving train until a class system begins to emerge and rebellion grows. The footage suggests an action-packed, high-concept thriller, but who knows if we'll get Joon-ho's original vision or a watered down version.

First poster and red band trailer for 'Filth' starring James McAvoy

Other than leading the mutant charge as a young Charles  Xavier in X-men: First Class, the last couple of years were fairly lean for James McAvoy. But he's making up for it in spades now, and his 2013 has already gotten off to a strong start with his Brit crime caper Welcome to the Punch, and Danny Boyle's Trance which goes national tomorrow. This along with an acclaimed stage run as MacBeth, and starring later this year alongside Jessica Chastain in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. One film that has largely gone under the radar and is about to make a huge splash is Filth, an adaptation of Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh's novel.

The first trailer for the film has finally turned up, and it's a crude, vulgar piece of work that more than earns its red band label. McAvoy plays drug-addicted, bigoted, sexually abusive cop who relishes in is baser urges. As he investigates a major murder case, he begins to lose his grip on reality.

Between the morally bankrupt characters and the offensive, rapid-fire dialogue, it closely resembles a Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths) film on steroids. Directed by Jon S. Baird and featuring an impressive supporting cast of Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Imogen Poots, Eddie Marsan, and Kate Dickie, look for Filth to open some time in the fall. [HeyUGuys]

Trailer Time: Retreat, starring Thandie Newton and Cillian Murphy

There's still no US release date nailed down for Retreat, the writing/directing debut from Carl Tibbetts. Pretty strange considering he's pulled together a kickin' cast of Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy, and Jamie Bell, in a psycho thriller that looks pretty tense. Plus these single set flicks are kinda hot right now. So what seems to be the issue?

Maybe this new UK trailer gives us some clues. The story centers on a troubled married couple(Newton and Murphy) who jet to their favorite island getaway in order to help repair their relationship. But things start to go haywire when a man washes up on shore, claiming to be a soldier of some sort and spouting off about a virus ravaging the world. This guy see Contagion once too often? Or is he telling the truth?

When the first trailer dropped back in May, I said then that it seemed a little hectic and frenzied. That could be good, but I hope it's not a cover for a story that doesn't let the mystery settle in so we can see it's effects on these people. If it's too chaotic the whole thing will fall apart. This trailer doesn't assuage my fears. Retreat will hit the UK on October 14th, and hopefull here not too long after...

Trailer Time: Retreat, starring Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton

After Jamie Bell totally ripped The Eagle away from Channing Tatum a few months ago, I was hoping he'd sart to get a little more action. He's been great in pretty much everything he's done lately, and has come a long way from the ballet dancing Billy Elliot. Today saw the release of a Cannes sales trailer for one of his upcoming films, Retreat, which also stars Cillian Murphy(28 Days Later) and Thandie Newton(The Truth About Charlie). By the look of it, it's an enclosed thriller about a couple(Murphy and Newton) who take a break at a secluded island retreat, only to have their vacation when a disturbed man(Bell) washed up on the shore, raving about a pandemic ravaging the outside world.

The film marks the directorial debut of Carl Tibbetts. Sony picked up the US rights but hasn't laid down a release date yet. It doesn't look too bad, but I think what the trailer does is maybe give us one scene too many, because it seems pretty clear to me exactly where the story is headed. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it. Check it out below...

Bell, Mackie join Man on a Ledge

You tell me that Sam Worthington is going to star in anything not an immediately recognizable franchise and I'll probably turn my nose up. The guy is a blank slate as an actor. But then you tell me that it's a heist flick, my genre of choice, and that Anthony Mackie(Half Nelson) and Jamie Bell(Defiance) are in and my ears suddenly perk up. That's exactly what happened, as Mackie and Bell have both agreed to co-star in Man on a Ledge, directed by Asger Leth.

Mackie signed on yesterday, and while this might not make up for losing out to Jeremy Renner for Mission: Impossible 4 it might be a meatier role with a chance to stand out. As long as he's not playing 2Pac the guy can act his butt off. Bell came to agreement today. There's a chance of Amy Adams(Drop Dead Gorgeous) taking a role as well, but that's yet to be confirmed.

Deadline says that Worthington will star as a cop jailed for a crime he didn't commit. He's let out to attend his father's funeral, but ends up on a ledge threatening suicide. It's all just a cover for the heist being pulled by his brother(Bell) across the street. Mackie would play Worthington's ex-partner.

Are they sure they can't replace Worthington with somebody else? Anybody? A stuffed shirt, maybe? I just don't dig him as an actor, at least not at this stage of his career. If he's good in this it would go a long way in changing my mind.

Spider-Man Screen Testing Under Way

Looks like we're getting down to the nitty gritty now as Sony Pictures has already completed most of the screen tests for the actors on their shortlist to play Peter Parker in Marc Webb's Spidey reboot. The list of those who've tested includes the usual names, with one notable addition and one notable omission: Andrew Garfield, Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Alden Ehrenreich, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, and the newbie is Michael Angarano. Angarano is probably best known for his roles in Lords of Dogtown and Sky High, but his best performance by far was in 2008's slept on drama, Snow Angels.

Missing from the list is Josh Hutcherson, who was considered a leading candidate at one point. The likely reason is that he's obligated to Journey to the Center of the Earth 2, which shoots in October. Although the actor is reportedly doing everything in his power to get out of it, it's likely that Sony will move ahead with a more reliable option, and soon.

I like the additon of Angarano. He's really grown on me since Sky High, where he was sorta bland. He faded into the background in Lords of Dogtown as well. His last two films are where he's shown his stuff, in the aforementioned Snow Angels but also in The Forbidden Kingdom. Not a good movie by any stretch, but he held his own with Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

You can read more of Deadline's coverage of the story here.

Rumor Mill: And Sony's Choice to Play SPIDER-MAN Is.....

Jamie Bell? That is if our buddy Rich Johnston from Bleeding Cool is to be believed. He reports that he's received a number of confirmations that the former Billy Elliot will be Sony's pick to don the web shooters in Marc Webb's upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.

Bell had been on the shortlist for the role along with Josh Hutcherson, Andrew Garfield, and others, and was considered a frontrunner. Since his starmaking turn in Billy Elliot, Bell has gone on to star in some pretty big films, but this would be his first real starmaking turn since. Back in 2004 he co-starred in Peter Jackson's King Kong remake, and most recently could be seen in 2008's nazi drama Defiance alongside Daniel Craig.

Bell's career could be in line for a major boost even if this rumor doesn't hold up. He's due to star as Tintin in the CGI adaptation of the popular Belgian comic. That project is being spearheaded by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson.
