'Spring Breakers' Sequel Penned by Irvine Welsh On the Way

Spring break forever, bitches! Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers is only about a year old but it's already considered a cult classic. And how could it not be with James Franco hamming it up as gangster/rapper Gator, plus a bevy of scantily-clad beauties engaging in all manner of sex, drugs, and criminal activity? Not that the $31M box office set the world on fire but at a cost of only about $5M, it makes total sense that a sequel would be on the way. Well, it's kind of a sequel.

A sequel titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is in the works but it doesn't appear to have any of the original crew involved yet. So why might this still be worth getting excited about? Two words: Irvine Welsh. The Trainspotting and Filth author is writing the script which will follow new spring breakers as they "do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them." Jonas Akerlund (Spun) will be directing.

Wild Bunch will be selling the film on the Cannes market later this month, and co-chief Vincent Maraval had this to say about it...

Maraval: “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original".

In other Wild Bunch news, Gaspar Noe, who directed the wildly inventive Enter the Void, has lined up his next project. At Cannes they will unveil Love, which is described as “a sexual melodrama about a boy and a girl and another girl”.

Marval: “It’s a love story, which celebrates sex in a joyous way. Gaspard feels that most films that touch on sex in traditional cinema are dark and dramatic, this will be really joyous… He says it’s a film that will give guys ‘a hard-on and make girls cry’.”

Expect "gives guys a hard-on and makes girls cry" to be all over the promos for that one.

Paul Verhoeven, who hasn't really done much since 2006's WWII thriller Black Book, is adapting Philppe Djan's novel Oh! to the big screen. The sexually-charged story centers on "a psychological game of cat-and-mouse between a businesswoman and a stalker who raped her, a crime for which she is seeking revenge."

There's also a remake of 1988's Maniac Cop which was penned by comics writer Ed Brubaker and produced by Nicholas Winding Refn. A director is expected to be announced at Cannes and it's bound to draw a ton of attention.

And lastly there are two projects coming from directors Arnaud Desplechin (Jimmy P.) and Blue Is the Warmest Color director, Abdellatif Kechiche. Desplechin will direct Three Memories from Childhood, "a portrait of a man as he looks back over three periods in his childhood and adolescence that shaped his life."And Kechiche will be at the helm for The Real Wound, an adaptation of François BĂ©gaudeau's book about a "French-Tunisian teenage boy’s bid to lose his virginity while on holiday in the resort of Hammamet in Tunisia." New Red Band Trailer for Irvine Welsh's 'Filth' Starring James McAvoy

Before James McAvoy plays the altruistic, peaceful Charles Xavier in X-men: Days of Future Past, he'll indulge in some good ol' fashioned, Irvine Welsh-inspired debauchery in Filth. Based on the author's sex and drug-fueled novel, the story follows degenerate cop Bruce Robertson as he does a half-assed job investigating a murder and earning a promotion. We've seen plenty of NSFW footage already but a new red band trailer ups the ante yet again, with McAvoy looking like he's having more fun than at any point in his career.

Co-starring Imogen Poots, Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, and Eddie Marsan with direction by Jon S. Baird, Filth hits VOD on April 24th and theaters May 30th.

Watch the Latest Depraved Red Band Trailer for 'Filth' Starring James McAvoy

Controversial. Insane. Dirty. Wild. Obscene. Psychotic. Warped. Probably not how most would want to have their film labeled, but the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Filth wears its depravity like a badge of honor. After dropping a new quad poster riddled with glowing superlatives, the latest red band trailer has been released which shows the disturbing levels of political incorrectness the film is more than happy to sink to.

In another dramatic change of pace for James McAvoy, he plays sex-obsessed, racist, and drug-fueled cop Bruce Robertson, who spends more time indulging his baser instincts than solving any cases, which makes it tough to get that promotion he's fighting for. The pacing of the footage is maniacally frenetic, almost too fast to get a grip on what's going on, which may be exactly what director Jon S. Baird is going for to keep us off-balance. The supporting cast is excellent with Imogen Poots, Eddie Marsan, Jim Broadbent, and Jamie Bell co-starring, and the whole thing looks like a Martin McDonagh film pumped up on steroids.

Filth opens in the UK this September, but has yet to gain a U.S. date.

New Unrated Trailer for 'Filth' Starring James McAvoy

Right now James McAvoy is busy shooting a role as the altruistic humanist Charles Xavier in X-men: Days of Future Past. While the actor is perfectly suited to it, he's been taking on characters with more of an edge of late, starting with Danny Boyle's Trance and the Brit thriller Welcome to the Punch. But we've never seen McAvoy in a role quite as nasty and offensive as the one he plays in Filth.

A red band trailer for the Irvine Welsh adaptation hit a couple of months ago, but now an unrated version is here and is a gut punch of sex, drugs, and really bad decisions. McAvoy plays Bruce Robertson, a drug-addicted, racist, maniacal, sex-obsessed cop who would rather indulge in his basest urges than investigate the murder case he's been tasked with. Shot with flash and energy by director Jon S. Baird, the film also boasts a trippy soundtrack that goes beautifully with some of the surreal imagery.

While we wait to see if Danny Boyle gets around to that Trainspotting sequel, this may be the Irvine Welsh film to tide fans over. Filth co-stars Imogen Poots, Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan, and Jim Broadbent. and hopefully we'll see it later this year.

First poster and red band trailer for 'Filth' starring James McAvoy

Other than leading the mutant charge as a young Charles  Xavier in X-men: First Class, the last couple of years were fairly lean for James McAvoy. But he's making up for it in spades now, and his 2013 has already gotten off to a strong start with his Brit crime caper Welcome to the Punch, and Danny Boyle's Trance which goes national tomorrow. This along with an acclaimed stage run as MacBeth, and starring later this year alongside Jessica Chastain in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. One film that has largely gone under the radar and is about to make a huge splash is Filth, an adaptation of Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh's novel.

The first trailer for the film has finally turned up, and it's a crude, vulgar piece of work that more than earns its red band label. McAvoy plays drug-addicted, bigoted, sexually abusive cop who relishes in is baser urges. As he investigates a major murder case, he begins to lose his grip on reality.

Between the morally bankrupt characters and the offensive, rapid-fire dialogue, it closely resembles a Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths) film on steroids. Directed by Jon S. Baird and featuring an impressive supporting cast of Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Imogen Poots, Eddie Marsan, and Kate Dickie, look for Filth to open some time in the fall. [HeyUGuys]
