'Spring Breakers' Sequel Penned by Irvine Welsh On the Way

Spring break forever, bitches! Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers is only about a year old but it's already considered a cult classic. And how could it not be with James Franco hamming it up as gangster/rapper Gator, plus a bevy of scantily-clad beauties engaging in all manner of sex, drugs, and criminal activity? Not that the $31M box office set the world on fire but at a cost of only about $5M, it makes total sense that a sequel would be on the way. Well, it's kind of a sequel.

A sequel titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is in the works but it doesn't appear to have any of the original crew involved yet. So why might this still be worth getting excited about? Two words: Irvine Welsh. The Trainspotting and Filth author is writing the script which will follow new spring breakers as they "do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them." Jonas Akerlund (Spun) will be directing.

Wild Bunch will be selling the film on the Cannes market later this month, and co-chief Vincent Maraval had this to say about it...

Maraval: “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original".

In other Wild Bunch news, Gaspar Noe, who directed the wildly inventive Enter the Void, has lined up his next project. At Cannes they will unveil Love, which is described as “a sexual melodrama about a boy and a girl and another girl”.

Marval: “It’s a love story, which celebrates sex in a joyous way. Gaspard feels that most films that touch on sex in traditional cinema are dark and dramatic, this will be really joyous… He says it’s a film that will give guys ‘a hard-on and make girls cry’.”

Expect "gives guys a hard-on and makes girls cry" to be all over the promos for that one.

Paul Verhoeven, who hasn't really done much since 2006's WWII thriller Black Book, is adapting Philppe Djan's novel Oh! to the big screen. The sexually-charged story centers on "a psychological game of cat-and-mouse between a businesswoman and a stalker who raped her, a crime for which she is seeking revenge."

There's also a remake of 1988's Maniac Cop which was penned by comics writer Ed Brubaker and produced by Nicholas Winding Refn. A director is expected to be announced at Cannes and it's bound to draw a ton of attention.

And lastly there are two projects coming from directors Arnaud Desplechin (Jimmy P.) and Blue Is the Warmest Color director, Abdellatif Kechiche. Desplechin will direct Three Memories from Childhood, "a portrait of a man as he looks back over three periods in his childhood and adolescence that shaped his life."And Kechiche will be at the helm for The Real Wound, an adaptation of François BĂ©gaudeau's book about a "French-Tunisian teenage boy’s bid to lose his virginity while on holiday in the resort of Hammamet in Tunisia." New clip from 'Drive', featuring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, and Bryan Cranston

So if I were at Cannes right now I'd be camped out in front of wherever Nicholas Winding Refn's Drive will be premiering and snapping ferociously at anybody who tries to get past me. If my homie Kevin "BDK" McCarthy doesn't see it I'm going to beat him around the head and neck. Suffice it to say I'm super amped for the film for a number of reasons. Refn has never failed to make interesting choices in all of his films(Valhalla Rising, Bronson, Pusher), and we get to see how Ryan Gosling handles his first real action flick. From the clip we saw a few days ago, it seems as if he handles it just fine. Did I mention the cast is phenomenal?

The story has Gosling as a stunt driver who moonlights as a wheelman for some seedy types, but finds himself under fire when a job goes south. Carey Mulligan is a lady he takes a liking to, while Bryan Cranston is his sorta mentor. All three are featured in this new clip, a total 180 from the previous one. Not at all about intense car chase stuff, but showing that there's going to be more to than the fast paced bits we've seen so far. I'd expect no less from Refn.

Drive is due to hit theaters on September 6th!

Sure Shots: Logan's Run; The Expendables 2; James Franco

* Logan's Run is a movie I never wanted to see remade. Sure it's got some mold on it, but I think the themes and ideas are still as relevant as ever. However, if it's going to be done anyway you'll hardly hear me complain about the choices of Nicholas Winding Refn(Valhalla Rising) directing and Ryan Gosling starring. Alex Garland hammered out the last script for the film, but apparently Warner Brothers wants to try something a bit different, bringing in Will Beall to draft a new one. Beall has been on fire lately, especially with WB, who love him right now over his script for Tales From the Gangster Squad.

* Grab your Geritol™, folks! Sylvester Stallone's sequel to The Expendables may not have a director yet, but we do know when it'll explode into movie theaters. The David Agosto and Ken Kaufman scripted actioner will open on August 17th, 2012, going head-to-head with exactly nobody at this point. The only competition right now comes the week before from the GI Joe sequel.  So far all we know about the film is that Stallone will be back. So will Randy Couture, but nobody else is locked in. There's a chance we'll see Bruce Willis and the newly animated Arnold Schwarzenegger return, while Jean-Claude Van Damme has also been rumored. The Expendables earned over $270M worldwide last year.

* James Franco doesn't appear to be slowing down one bit. While he seems to be dipping his toes in every aspect of the film industry right now, he's still taking time to line up future projects. He's just optioned Zeroville as a possible directing gig, but the lead role seems perfect for him as well. The Steve Erickson novel follows Ike Jerome, a 24 year old film fanatic who travels to Hollywood in 1969 to get into the movie business. His shaved head features tattoos of Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift in "A Place in the Sun", Ike becomes a successful film editor whose journey ends in tragedy and horrific discovery. The book features appearances by numerous notable celebrities, like Robert De Niro, Ryan O'Neal, Ali McGraw, and Brian De Palma. Thanks to Variety for details on this story.

Ron Perlman joins Nicholas Refn's Drive

How is it that I haven't been covering Nicholas Winding Refn's next film, Drive?  Because I'm a completely unforgiveable slacker. Refn scored critical raves for Bronson(starring Inception's Tom Hardy) back in 2008. His follow-up, Valhalla Rising, has received some mixed reviews but I won't judge it til I see it.

The latest from the set of Drive is that Ron Perlman, he who underwent no absolutely no cosmetic changes to portray Hellboy(just a joke, although he is a little monstrous), has signed on to the action thriller. He'll be joining star Ryan Gosling(The Believer), Christina Hendricks(Mad Men), Carey Mulligan(Never Let Me Go), Bryan Cranston(Breaking Bad), and Albert Brooks(Defending Your Life).

Gosling will portray a a stuntman who moonlights as a wheelman for criminal organizations, until he finds out that a contract has been put out on him after a failed heist.

Filming is set to begin in Los Angeles later this month. Drive is based on the 2005 crime novel  by James Sallis.
