Fables headed to the Big Screen? David Yates to Direct?

Ask me or a lot of other comic book readers what the best series of the last decade was and you'll probably see the same answers: The Walking Dead, Y the Last Man, and last but certainly not least: Fables. Fables is a series that puts the characters from our favorite fairy tales into a modern setting. The Big Bad Wolf and Snow White are married, Prince Charming is a womanizing cad, and Pinocchio is forever stuck as a 12 year old boy. Any character you can possibly think of has probably made an appearance in the series at some point. There's also an underlying mystery as to why the characters were forced to flee their storybook home and into our world. Created by Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham, the series has run consistently since 2002 under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint.

A couple of years ago it appeared that Fables was headed to the small screen via a deal worked out with ABC, but little to nothing has been said of it since. I know I've been waiting patiently.  Now it looks like that deal might've fallen through, and Fables could instead be headed to the big screen. Pajiba has the story, with sources stating that David Yates(Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) is up for the directing gig. Yates has been at the epicenter of a lot of rumors lately. He's apparently the top choice to replace Guillermo Del Toro on The Hobbit.

I'll gladly trade in a TV series for even one great Fables flick. While I did drop the book last year, the first 75 issues are as compelling as any comic book I've ever read. The initial storyline, a mystery involving the murder of Snow White's sister Rose Red, would make for a perfect jumping on point for a film franchise.
