Chris Hemsworth officially offered lead in Snow White and the Huntsman

Has Universal's months long nightmare finally ended? The studio has been struggling in it's attempts to find a lead for Rupert Sanders' Snow White and the Huntsman, with Viggo Mortensen and Hugh Jackman having passed on the job already.  Last week it was reported that they were leaning towards Chris Hemsworth, fresh off a rousing debut weekend for Thor, to take over the titular huntsman role. Now Variety reports they've officially offered him the gig, hopefully putting this whole sordid mess to bed.

Hemsworth would star as the huntsman, hired by the Evil Queen to find and kill Snow White. The huntsman ultimately can not kill the princess, deciding to run off and evade capture with her. Charlize Theron will play the queen, while Kristen Stewart is set as Snow White. Sam Claflin is the Prince, who presumably would still be Snow White's love interest. The reason why I say "presumably" is that this is obviously not a faithful adaptation of the classic fairy tale, and with a much younger Hemsworth in the lead role there could be romantic sparks that would not have been present with a much older Jackman or Mortensen.

There's only one major character yet to be cast, that of the queen's henchman, Finn.

Snow White and the Huntsman is set to open on December 21st 2012!
