Sure Shots: Nicholas Winding Refn; Jack Black; Cloud Atlas

* With Nicolas Winding Refn's Ryan Gosling thriller, Drive, premiering at Cannes this week, some info about his next film, Only God Forgives is floating around as well. Vithaya Pansringarm and Asian popstar Yaya Ying have joined the cast in unspecified roles. They'll be joining the already confirmed Luke Evans and Kristin Scott Thomas in the film about a boxing match between a Thai police officer and a gangster. Plans are for shooting to begin this December.

* To be filed under "weird partnerships", Jack Black is set to team-up with Brit filmmaker Michael Winterbottom(The Killer Inside Me) in Bailout, a comedy based on Jess Walters' 2009 novel, The Financial Lives of the Poets. Black would play who has seen his career devastated by the recession, wih the effects bleeding into his personal life. One day he meets two strangers who make him a job offer he can't refuse but probably should.

* I won't begin to try and describe David Mitchell's 2004 novel, Cloud Atlas. Just think of it as one massive, confusing fantasy that covers six separate stories spanning from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future. The much hyped adaptation of it was finally greenlit recently, to be written and directed by The Wachowskis(The Matrix) and Tom Twyker(Run Lola Run). We knew Tom Hanks had a key role, and now a number of other big names have been confirmed. Ben Whishaw(Bright Star) Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, and Jim Broadbent(Another Year) will all be featured in some way, with Natalie Portman still rumored for a minor role. I think Cloud Atlas might be the next book I tackle.
