Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis may re-team for 3D toy adaptation, Major Matt Mason

It's good to see Robert Zemeckis getting back into the world of live-action flicks, after spending so many years toiling away with his performance captured stuff. Although I wish he'd get crackin' on that Roger Rabbit sequel, he keeps lining up new projects in front of it that make me think it'll never happen. We learned a couple of weeks ago that his next film looks to be the airline drama, Flight, starring Denzel Washington. But coming soon after that could be a huge 3D spectacle involving another huge name: Tom Hanks.

THR has the news that Hanks and his Playtone Productions are looking to Zemeckis to helm a live-action 3D film called Major Matt Mason, based on a Mattel action figure. Hanks and Graham Yost are coming together for the script, with plans for the budget to hover around $100M or so. Hanks and Zemeckis have worked together a number of times before on Forrest Gump, Castaway, and The Polar Express.

No details on the story, but it's expected to be a grand space adventure. Hanks just can't seem to stay away from the land of the toys, and I'm betting he sees some similarities in this that he saw in Toy Story. Clearly the plan will be to build a franchise out of this.
