3. Hobo With a Shotgun
Those who've grown sick of the "grindhouse" remake craze of the last few years may want to wait until they've given Hobo with a Shotgun a try. Directed by Jason Eisener, expanding his contest winning trailer(for the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse twinbill) into an exploitation flick that is equal parts absurd and sickeningly violent. Rutger Hauer anchors the film as the literal hobo with a shotgun, reaping his own brand of vigilante justice....all in hopes of saving enough money to buy a lawnmower. It's as crazy as it sounds.
2. The Cutting Edge (Blu-Ray)
A down in the dumps ex-hockey player(DB Sweeney) and a stuck up ice skating queen(Moira Kelly) pair up as an oil and water tandem in hopes of winning the gold at the Olympics. In the process they'll win eachother's hearts as well. Duh. It's a silly idea that feels like a relic from the mid-80s, but it's so hopelessly romantic that it's impossible not to fall in love with the film. Three piss poor tween sequels have diluted the product, but the original is absolutely the best ice skating film ever. Take that, Blades of Glory.
1. 13 Assassins (Blu-Ray) The latest from prolific director Takashi Miike has frequently been compared to The Seven Samurai , which I think is fair. In terms of look and style, Assassins could be a modern day revisiting of Akira Kurosawa's classic tale. But in tone, Miike's penchant for grisly violence and elaborate action sequences takes over, and I'm definitely not complaining. By the time you read this, Miike will likely have finished three more movies, but 13 Assassins may just be his best yet.
