Sylvester Stallone planning Rambo 5 afterall?
Y'know it's been almost two years since I last heard anything about a fifth Rambo film. Back in 2009, there were all types of stories that the film would be based partially in science fiction territory, with Rambo battling genetically enhanced soldiers, or slave traders on the US/Mexico boarder. It all sounded ridiculous, and kinda like the former Vietnam vet had finally jumped the credibility shark. Maybe Sly heard the disgruntled rumblings of his fans at this news, because it wasn't long before he seemed to be less interested in making more Rambo films...
Stallone: "I was going to do it…I said I’d never talk about this, but with I feel that with Rocky Balboa, that character came complete circle. He went home. But for Rambo to go on another adventure might be, I think, misinterpreted as a mercenary gesture and not necessary. I don’t want that to happen…I’m very happy with the last Burmese episode, because I didn’t pull any punches on it."
The "Burmese episode" would be the wildly over-the-top Rambo released in 2008, which gained over $110M worldwide. Not bad considering all of these flicks are made for cheap. But sometime between then and now, Stallone appears to have changed his mind. Maybe it was the success of The Expendables that lit a fire under him, because screenwriter Sean Hood, partially responsible for the heinous Conan the Barbarian script, has revealed he's finished the first draft of Rambo: The Last Stand.
Speaking with FearNet, Hood says the story idea came from Stalllone himself, and that hopefully he'll have time and desire to shoot it in the future. That didn't sound all that certain, but Hood also spoke with Empire and said this...
Hood: “I met with Mr Stallone twice last year. He gave me a book, an older screenplay, and about twenty pages he’d written himself to use as inspiration for the last chapter of the ‘Rambo’ saga.”
Waiting on Stallone could be an issue. The 65-year old actor has a busy slate ahead, with The Expendables 2 on the way, and also Walter Hill's action flick, Head Shot. So it'll be at least a couple of years before we see another Rambo. Personally, I thought the last film veered off course enough that the legendary soldier should be dishonorably discharged for good. I'd much rather see a Son of Rambow sequel.
