Brian Cox to play a former Senator in Dog Fight

When you hear the name Hannibal Lecter, chances are you see images of Anthony Hopkins' devilish smile, and maybe a taste of fava beans. But the first guy to actually play the role was Brian Cox, in the awesome adaptation of Manhunter. Cox has been playing some pretty mean folks ever since, whether it was in Troy, X-Men 2, or most recently in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He's gotten so good at it that it's hard to forget how gifted of a comic actor he can be. Super Troopers sucked, but he was hilarious. Last year he starred in the action comedy, Red, alongside Helen Mirren and Bruce Willis.

He's jumping into the comedy game yet again as Variety reports he's in final talks to join Dog Fight, starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as two political rivals jockeying for votes in a North Carolina congressional district. Jay Roach(Recount) is directing, with Chris Henchy(The Other Guys) co-writing along with Shawn Harwell.

Cox will play Galifianakis' father, a former senator who has always been distant from his son. Should make for some funny and awkward dinner conversation. Dylan McDermott, Jason Sudeikis, Sarah Baker, and Katherine LaNasa round out the cast. Dog Fight will hit theaters a few months ahead of election night, on August 10th 2012.
