'Drive' book sequel coming out in April 2012

While Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn are receiving all sorts of love here in the heart of awards season, one area where Drive seems to be missing out a little bit is in the screenplay category. One of the reasons is that I think people have genuinely forgotten that the story of Driver(Gosling) began in the book by James Sallis(of which I have a copy right next to me), and because the dialogue in the film is so sparse. Thumb through Sallis' book and you'll see it's exactly as the author planned it, heavy in description, light on banter. And while Drive is receiving all the praise it so rightly deserves, does it seem like a film that's begging for a sequel?

It may not ever get one, but Twitch(via ThePlaylist) reports that Sallis planning a book sequel to Drive, which would be released in April 2012. Titled 'Driven', the brief teaser released by the publisher reads like this....

"Six years later - Phoenix. Out of nowhere someone wants Driver dead. Who? Why? Big mistake..."

Doesn't tell us much, and I don't want to think it's so easily connected to the last story. Maybe an incident from Driver's early career? I'll be curious to see if Gosling and Refn have any interest in making a sequel. Drive didn't exactly set the charts on fire($66M globally), but it's enough of a critical fave that a follow-up may do big business. Only time will tell, and even if they did we'd have to wait until Logan's Run and Only God Forgives are completed, meaning it'd be at least three years.
