Jonathan Nolan or Michael Green may handle rewrites on 'Akira'
Warner Brothers' live-action remake of Akira still has a pulse, and despite the recent turn of events it appears to be getting stronger. A couple of days ago we learned that the studio had shut down the Vancouver production office, initially thought to be because of budget concerns which have plagued the film from the outset. Turns out, it had less to do with money and more to do with latest script draft by David James Kelly, which must have left much to be desired.
WB was said to be looking at higher profile scribes to do a polish, and in their latest update, Variety reports two names with strong superhero movie ties at the top of their list. Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan's bro and one of the writers of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, is said to be in contention. The other being eyed is Michael Green, who had the misfortune of being one of the writers behind last summer's Green Lantern debacle. Seems like an easy choice to make, doesn't it?
In a weird way, I wouldn't be surprised if Green gets picked for the job. It would be the perfect capper to a production that has been cursed from jumpstreet, with seemingly nobody wanting to star in the thing, a director skipping town, and multiple rewrites in an attempt to cut costs. Right now, only the super boring Garrett Hedlund is attached to star. Jaume Collet-Serra will be the man behind the camera if things ever kick into high gear. Warner Brothers must see something, because they're doing everything in their power to make Akira work.
