Matthew Fox joins Peter Webber's WWII pic, 'Emperor'

Peter Webber made a pretty big splash back in 2003 with his boring as sh*t Johannes Verneer drama, Girl with a Pearl Earring. I think people dug it mainly because Scarlett Johansson was so hot at the time(that was the same year as Lost in Translation), but the movie itself as about as entertaining as my morning constitutional. Webber took that positive buzz and did more than squander it, he shredded it with 2007's unforgivable Hannibal Rising. We haven't heard much from Webber since, but now he's back with a WWII flick that sounds like it might have some potential.

The film is Emperor, and today it just landed Matthew Fox in the lead role. It's not your typical WWII film, either, as it will detail the final days of the war with Fox playing General Bonner Fellers, who served with Douglas MacArthur during Operation Blacklist. After the Japanese surrender, the plan was put into place to swiftly occupy the nation. The story is being described as an "epic", and will follow Fellers' decision whether or not to have Hirohito charged as a war criminal.

Webber being the director scares me a little bit, but I see a lot of potential in this one. We'll see how the rest of the cast shapes up before I get too invested in it. Production is set to begin at the end of the month, so more casting should be revealed soon. Fox is everywhere lately, as he'll be facing off with Tyler Perry in I, Alex Cross, and starring alongside Brad Pitt in World War Z. [Variety]
