Sure Shots: 'Sherlock Gnomes'; David Slade; 'Frankenstein'

* John Stevenson(Kung Fu Panda) will stick to the animated realm by directing Sherlock Gnomes, the sequel to the better-than-expected Gnomeo and Juliet. Original scribes Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil are back to pen the adventure which has the porcelain lovers teaming up with the great lawn ornament detective to uncover the mystery of their missing pals. Production begins early next year with Elton John again providing new music for the soundtrack. [Deadline]

* He may have turned down Daredevil to help lead NBC's Hannibal TV series, but David Slade isn't staying away from the silver screen for long. Disney has tapped the 30 Days of Night director to helm an adaptation of Ally Condie's young adult sci-fi series, Matched. The three book series takes place in a dystopian future where all choice has been removed, and follows a girl who falls in love with a guy she's not meant to be with. Sounds like The Adjustment Bureau, only less interesting. Kieran and Michelle Mulroney(Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) will adapt the screenplay. [Deadline]

* Once a project that was being circled by Shawn Levy, it appears that 20th Century Fox has found someone to direct their adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Paul McGuigan, who directed the underrated Wicker Park before giving us the forgettable Lucky Number Slevin and Push, has entered talks to direct the film, which features a much hyped script by Max Landis(Chronicle). McGuigan seems like a solid pick, and someone who can direct on a smaller budget, one of the reasons why Levy dropped out to begin with. Landis' script aims to be more revisionist, sci-fi take with a heavy emphasis on redemption. [Variety]
