How much money did The Avengers make last summer? Like $1.5B or something? Call me crazy but that sounds like a hit of epic proportions. And what did The Dark Knight Rises do? Oh...well over $1B as well. So both movies will go down as two of the top grossing films of all-time, but they were hardly perfect. We can all agree to that, right? But would any of us use the word "appalling" to describe The Avengers? If you're Christopher Nolan's renowned cinematographer Wally Pfister you sure would.
Talking with the Sarasota Herald Tribune, Pfister was asked about the most important aspect of shooting a film, and took the opportunity to deliver a shot across Joss Whedon's bow....
Pfister: "What’s really important is storytelling. None of it matters if it doesn’t support the story. I thought 'The Avengers' was an appalling film. They’d shoot from some odd angle and I’d think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling."
I don't really agree with that, but ok. Then again I also don't have his eye for such things. One could probably make the same case about Inception if they really wanted to. Both films are shot beautifully and logically if you ask me.
Anyway, Pfister also revealed a little bit about his upcoming directorial debut, which is being produced by Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas. The film is being kept in secret, sticking with the Nolan tradition, but Pfister at least let us know the genre he's gunning for....
Pfister: "It’s a present-day science fiction film, a fairly big concept. It’s bigger budget — not as big as 'Batman,' but not independent."
Last we'd heard of the untitled project, the plan was to begin filming this fall or early winter, so hopefully we'll start hearing more on it in the very near future.
