After the disturbing creepiness of the excellent and vastly underrated The Skin I Live In, Pedro Almodovar was apparently in the mood for a palette cleansing comedy. He hasn't approached the genre since early in his career, but if the first teaser for I'm So Excited (formerly The Brief Lovers) is any indication, he's not holding back in the least.
You can't use use that title and not have The Pointer Sisters' classic dance jam not play a part, and that's essentially what this entire clip turns out to be. Featuring a veritable who's who of Spain's top actors, the film takes place entirely on airplane where something terrible has happened that forces the passengers to suddenly get very chatty and afraid for their lives. Um, and there's apparently some dancing, with the airplane staff pulling off a rendition of the titular hit song. This looks incredibly silly and a ton of fun.
Paz Vega, Antonio Banderas, and Penelope Cruz will all make cameos, while Javier Cámara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas, Raul Arévalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, Willy Toledo, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Blanca Suárez, José Luis Torrijo, José María Yazpik, and Laya Martí make up the rest of the massive cast.
I'm So Excited is slated to open in Spain on March 8th 2013. Expect Sony Pictures Classics to drop it on us soon after.[TheFilmStage]
