Joel Silver plans 'Escape from New York' trilogy

If it seems like a remake of John Carpenter's 1981 cult hit Escape from New York has been in the works forever, you're not far off. Hollywood has been trying to get it rolling for awhile, with names like Jeremy Renner and Gerard Butler eyed for the role of Snake Plissken. Len Wiseman had been set to direct it at one point, but it was when Breck Eisner (The Crazies) came aboard that things seemed to be moving forward. Unfortunately, New Line Cinema turned it down, and it's been pretty quiet ever since. But now super-producer Joel Silver has designs on reviving it, and even taking it a step further.

Deadline reports that Silver will team up with StudioCanal to bring a new version of the film to the big screen, and the hope is to turn it into a trilogy. Not surprising considering the money Silver raked in with The Matrix, Lethal Weapon, and Sherlock Holmes franchises. Silver's looking to do an entirely new take on the material, starting from scratch with an origin story.

The original film is memorable for Kurt Russell's performance as the eye-patched Plissken, a convict sent into a maximum security prison to rescue the President. In 1996 Carpenter directed the sequel, Escape from L.A., which isn't looked upon as fondly. It's unclear if Silver plans to follow the same trajectory as it's still fairly early on in the process.

So assuming this one actually gets off the ground, who would you like to see as Snake Plissken?
