Punch Drunk DVDs

Well, to say this is a big week for home entertainment would probably be the understatement of the year. Two of the biggest movies of last year and one that Travis adamantly campaigned for movie of the year. Here we go!

The Hobbit:
Few films in the history of Hollywood were as highly anticipated as The Hobbit. The Phantom Menace is one of the few films that I can think of to put in front of it, anticipation wise. When you add in the variable of highly anticipated films that did not dissapoint I would have to put this one at number 1. Not only did The Hobbit meet expectations, in a lot of way I thought it was a more enjoyable film than the original LotR trilogy...motion sickness aside that is.

Zero Dark Thirty:
By now everyone knows this is the movie that details the hunt for and eventual death of Osama Bin Laden. You probably have heard that the film is good but starts slow and is even boring at times. Discard these opinions immediately  I've no clue what people are talking about to that effect but I was riveted the entire time. Kathryn Bigelow does an amazing job of making you feel the gravity of decisions, the stress of the situations, and the general tension of that period. Admittedly I'm a fan of procedurals  the first 3/4 of this film is just that...a procedural, and a damn good one. If you're looking for a shoot 'em up look elsewhere, the final raid on the compound is awesome, don't get me wrong, but it's only 30 minutes of a 2hr 30min film.

Rust and Bone:
Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenarts play two people who find each other after each finding tragedy in their separate lives. A love story with none of the fluff and all of the emotion that comes in our real world relationships this is a film with a great story, yes, but it's true merit is in the performances given by it's stars. An amazing film that truly solidified Marion Cotillard as not just a star but a true talent.
