Kristen Stewart to Star in ''Camp X-Ray' and Olivier Assayas' 'Sils Maria'

We saw an awful lot of Kristen Stewart in 2012, but very little of it could be categorized as "positive". She starred in the blockbuster Snow White and the Huntsman, but that was muddled by a lot of tabloid nastiness involving her fling with director Rupert Sanders. With Twilight drawing to a close, she took on the anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, which had a confusing release schedule and died at the box office. This year by comparison has been extremely quiet, with the only real blip on the radar being her brief attachment to the con-man film, Focus. But now she's getting back into the groove by taking on two indie projects.

In a surprising career move, Stewart will star in the political drama Camp X-Ray, which sees her as a woman who joins the military to escape her small town. Rather than heading to Iraq as she had expected, she's instead stationed at Guantanamo Bay where she faces abuse from the Muslim men in her charge, and forges a relationship with a prisoner who has been locked away for eight years. Peter Sattler will make his directorial debut, with David Gordon Green producing.

Most promising is Stewart's role in Sils Maria, the latest film from Summer Hours director, Olivier Assayas. She joins Juliette Binoche and Chloe Moretz in the story of an aging actress who become the obsession of a younger thesp taking on a role the older actress once made famous. Stewart will be playing Binoche's assistant, replacing the departed Mia Wasikowska.

Both films shoot this summer, with Sils Maria first on Stewart's schedule.
