Stephen Daldry's 'Trash' Moves Forward with Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen

A few months before Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close hit theaters, he became attached to another film that sounded like a sure-fire Oscar contender. He was set to direct an adaptation of Andy Mulligan's child adventure novel, Trash, with Richard Curtis (Love Actually) penning the script. Nothing really came of it since then, but now all of a sudden it's back on and being fast-tracked with some pretty big names slated to star.

Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen, and Wagner Moura (Elysium) have come aboard the film, with unknowns Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein set to play the story's three leads. Set in a Third World country, three homeless "dumpsite boys" make a special discovery, one that catches the attention of a police officer who offers a reward in exchange for it. But that just makes them want to hold on to it even more, and soon the boys find themselves attempting to solve a mystery while staying ahead of their pursuers. Sheen will play Father Julliard, while Mara is an NGO worker named Olivia, although their roles are likely to be secondary.

Production is set to being next month with a May 2014 release date currently in the cards. We'll see if that holds up. [Deadline]
