Allen Leech Joins 'Hunter's Prayer'; 'The Danish Girl' Adds Amber Heard; Felicity Jones Eyes 'Inferno'

The Imitation Game and Downton Abbey's Allen Leech has joined Sam Worthington and Odeya Rush in Hunter's Prayer, the next film from director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3). Based on Kevin Wignall's novel, For the Dogs, the film centers on an assassin hired to take out a young girl, but instead bonds with her. Leech will play the assassin's former employer, who is presumably none too happy about the situation. [Deadline]

Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) has already gathered a strong central pair in Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander for his sex-change drama, The Danish Girl. Now Deadline reports that Amber Heard is in talks to take on a key supporting role. The fact-based story centers on Danish painter Einar Wegener (Redmayne) who in 1930 became one of the first men to undergo a sex change, becoming Lili Elbe. The film is essentially a love story about Einar and his wife Gerda (Vikander), who supported him in his decision until complications became too great.. Heard would take on the supporting role of Oola. Charlize Theron, Rachel Weisz, Nicole Kidman, and Marion Cotillard have been attached to the film at various points, all eventually dropping out.

Felicity Jones, who can be seen right now in The Theory of Everything, is in early talks to join Ron Howard and Tom Hanks for Inferno, the second sequel following The Da Vinci Code. Based on Dan Brown's popular novels, the film has an amnesiac Robert Langdon working with a doctor to recover his memories and stop a madman from releasing a global plague with connections to Dante's Inferno. If she signs, Jones would take on the role of Sienna Brooks, the doctor helping Langdon solve his latest mystery. [Deadline]

Kelli Garner to Play Marilyn Monroe in Lifetime Miniseries

I've been a big fan of Kelli Garner since she starred in Larry Clark's true-crime drama, Bully, and have been waiting for her big moment to shine. Sadly, it hasn't really come yet despite a small role in The Aviator opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and a key role in Horns alongside Daniel Radcliffe. She even had her own TV series for a time in Pan Am, and although that didn't turn out so well she's about to get another shot. Garner has now lined up two projects, including one that will have her playing Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe.

Garner will star as Monroe in the Lifetime miniseries, Marilyn, which is based on the best-selling book The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe. She'll be joined by Susan Sarandon, and the story follows Marilyn "who walks red carpets in shimmering gowns while fighting a battle against demons she’s inherited from her mentally ill mother Gladys (Sarandon), whom she loves, hates and wants desperately to save. Marilyn becomes the Face and Voice of an era, yet wants most of all to be someone’s mother and someone’s little girl."  Laurie Collyer will direct from a script by The Kennedys writer, Stephen Kronish. Given Lifetime's track record this could turn out to be a disaster, but it's a role that will put a lot of attention on Garner and if she does well it should lead to bigger and better offers. [Deadline]

She's also signed on to star in the dramedy When I Live my Life Over Again, which stars Christopher Walken, Amber Heard, Oliver Platt, Hamish Linklater, and Ann Magnuson. Written and directed by Robert Edwards, the story centers on "Jude, the daughter of a famous crooner Paul Lombard who becomes her worst nightmare as he plots his big comeback." Garner and Heard in the same movie? Be still my heart.

So yes, I'll be watching both of these. [ScreenDaily]

Amber Heard Joins Channing Tatum in 'Magic Mike XXL'

With most of the cast, minus Matthew McConaughey, expected to return for Magic Mike XXL, the last couple of days have seen a number of ladies coming aboard. Andie MacDowell and Jada Pinkett Smith joined the stripper dramedy, with the latter as a strip club owner, and now guys will be given something else amazing to look at with Amber Heard joining the cast.  Can we just ditch the dudes entirely now, please?

Heard will be joining the returning Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer, and Gabriel Iglesias in the Greg Jacobs-directed film, which will have the guys going on a road trip to a stripper convention. Heard's role is unclear but she's probably going to end up the female lead, which could mean a romance with one of the guys. We haven't heard anything about Cody Horn returning so there may be a slot open for Tatum's new love interest.

Any chance Heard can convince her fiance Johnny Depp to make a cameo? Would anybody want to see that? Me neither. Magic Mike XXL opens July 1st 2015.

Amber Heard Joins James Franco's 'The Adderall Diaries'

About four years ago James Franco quietly picked up the rights to activist/director/author Stephen Elliott's memoir, The Adderall Diaries, with plans to adapt and star in the film himself. He's been busy bringing other authors' novels to the screen, some more successfully than others, and now Franco is finally turning his attention back to it, lining up an impressive cast led by Amber Heard.

Heard, along with Christian Slater, Ed Harris, Cynthia Nixon, and Jim Parrack (who also starred in Franco's Child of God and As I Lay Dying) have joined the film which Robert Redord is exec-producing and Pamela Romanowsky is directing. Similar to In Cold Blood, the story begins when Elliott tries to break his writer's block by reporting on a murder trial.  Fueled by copious amounts of the ADHD drug, Adderall, Elliott's stream-of-consciousness writing veers into some wild territory territory including Paris Hilton, S&M, and the actions of his cruel father.

No word on when filming will begin. Heard will be seen next in London Fields, another adaptation about a writer suffering from writer's block. Funny that.

Review: '3 Days to Kill' Starring Kevin Costner, Amber Heard, and Hailee Steinfeld

If there's one thing McG and Luc Besson will never be recognized for, it's subtlety. Hot babes, fast cars, shoot outs, and questionable attempts at humor are what they traffic in. It wasn't always that way for Besson, director of genre classics like The Professional and La Femme Nikita, but now he produces artificial popcorn flavoring like The Transporter and Taken. But there's something endearing about Besson's sloppy Euro-action movies, and for all its many....oh so many flaws...3 Days to Kill is sort of enjoyable for the performances within.

And by performances I mean a Kevin Costner who seems totally perplexed by the strange comedy-espionage world he's stumbled into, and Amber Heard vamping it up in a variety of skin tight outfits (and odd locales) that are worth the price of admission alone. It's not fair to say that Besson tosses Costner into the Taken blender because 3 Days to Kill is only partly an action movie; the good majority of it resembles a sitcom where the clueless dad tries to reconnect with his rebellious teen. It makes for a strange brew, and one that's too ridiculous to be boring.

Costner, with his unkempt beard and collection of scarfs plays Ethan, a CIA operative who has grown tired of the job. After a run-in with the ludicrously-named, but also sort of awesome villain known as The Albino goes belly-up when Ethan passes out, he's diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. With only months left to live, he decides to hang up his gun and reconnect with his ex-wife (Connie Nielsen) and estranged daughter Zoey (Hailee Steinfeld), who are now living in Paris. The wife never liked his job, and Zoey has no clue about it, but just as Ethan is starting to get comfortable he's roped back into business by an oversexed honeypot named Vivi (Heard). He refuses, even somehow shaking her flirtatious charms...

"You're not my type", he says.

"I'm everybody's type", she comes back.

She's not wrong, but it takes the offer of an experimental cure to get Ethan back for one last murder mission, taking out an arms dealer named The Wolf. The cure causes Ethan to black out at inconvenient moments, like every time he's about to nab the bad guy. But what makes him even more delirious is the presence of an African family of squatters who have taken over his home randomly. The youngest son is always trying to give him high-fives, which Ethan is WAY too cool for. In an effort to make good with Zoey he buys a purple bike nobody wants to ride, and then there's the issue of her dating and having hair troubles and the big dance is coming up and what is a trained killer to do!?!? Why not torture some sage parenting advice out of the guys he's been hired to beat up? An unfortunate Italian accountant is forced to give up his recipe for marinara or face further brutality; while another insider (Marc Androni) keeps getting phone calls from Ethan on how to raise a daughter. Speaking of phones, Zoey sets Icona Pop's "I Don't Care" as Ethan's ringtone and it goes off at the worst times imaginable. Stealth apparently isn't in his job description.

It's over-the-top and nonsensical but Besson and co-writer Adi Hasak know exactly what they're doing. Some of the jokes about "cowboy" Americans and France's silly governmental system are lifted from Besson's old playbook (they can be heard in The Familymost recently), and McG directs with his usual emphasis on action rather than emotion. Costner fits comfortably as a bad ass despite his weathered, beaten body, which only makes his bewilderment during the sentimental moments all the more believable. The film does veer a little too heavily into schmaltz, especially when Ethan starts offering up dance lessons and teaching Zoey how to ride a bike. The mix of humor and violence isn't always on-point, and the tone is more than a little disorienting. Hardly one of Besson's best but far from his worst (ever seen Wasabi? Or From Paris with Love?), 3 Days to Kill is entertaining enough, ironically, for those with some time to kill.

New Trailer for '3 Days to Kill' Starring Kevin Costner and Amber Heard

So the last time we saw Kevin Costner in the realm of secret agents and espionage didn't work out so well, with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit tanking and probably ruining any hope for a Costner-led spinoff. But maybe he'll find better success with 3 Days to Kill, an action-thriller spawned by the unholy union of writer/producer Luc Besson and director McG. Basically, expect lots of old dudes kicking ass while buxom babes (Amber Heard, in this case) hang off their arms and explosions go off randomly in the background.

A new trailer for the film is online, and it actually doesn't look too bad minus all the sentimental hokum. Costner plays a former agent with a terminal disease, who takes one last mission in the hopes of finding a cure. Meanwhile he's also trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter, played by Hailee Steinfeld.

3 Days to Kill opens February 21st.

First Trailer for '3 Days to Kill' with Kevin Costner and Amber Heard

When Luc Besson doesn't have the time to fully indulge in another one of his specific brand of Euro action flicks like Taken or Colombiana, he has a large stable of interchangeable directors who can do it for him. Those guys include Olivier Megaton, Pierre Morel, and now McG has picked up the mantle for 3 Days to Kill, a movie about an aging hitman. And nope, Liam Neeson is nowhere to be found.

Instead it's Kevin Costner, Pa Kent himself, as a government wetworks agent who learns he has a terminal disease and quits the job to try and connect with his daughter, played by Hailee Steinfeld. Amber Heard is his mysterious handler  and when she makes him an offer for a life-saving cure if he completes one last dangerous mission ("one last mission" alert!!!!), he accepts and stuff gets blown up real good, along with plenty of Costner punching things.  Overall, this looks pretty generic and too much like Taken redux, but if it leads to more Costner that's not such a bad thing.

3 Days to Kill opens February 21st.

The Talent Show: Amber Heard

Oh come on, you KNEW it had to be Amber Heard this week, right? The blond bombshell has been my numero uno draft pick since she had a small role in Alpha Dog, and she's only grown in my eyes ever since. And even though she's smokin' hot and those eyes are absolutely killer, she's also excelled in a number of diverse roles that I consider personal favorites, showing her dramatic skills in The Joneses and her ability to kick ass in Drive Angry.Even when the movies aren't so good, like The Informers (urrggghhh) or The Rum Diary (ugghhh), Heard makes you wish the director would forget everything else and just keep the camera on her.

But the real reason Heard just had to be in the spotlight is her starring role as the sexy pageant queen Miss San Antonio in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills, a film that has so many beauties it could drive The Talent Show for a calendar year. Plus, this week sees the long-awaited release of Heard's first breakout role in Jonathan Levine's horror All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. The only way she could be more perfect is she played a superhero in some Marvel movie, maybe as The Wasp or Ms. Marvel? Hey Marvel, get on that STAT!

Amber Heard joins Kevin Costner in 'Three Days to Kill'

So this is how they're going to get me to root for a McG film to not completely suck? By adding some of my favorite actors to a story that would sound great with any other director at the helm? Already produced and co-written by Luc Besson, who I love, and with Kevin Costner starring alongside Hailee Steinfeld, the red hot Amber Heard has now been added to the cast of Three Days to Kill. Ok, I'm sold. Go McG!

Penned by Besson and Adi Hasek, the film has Costner as a dying Secret Service agent who retires in order to reconnect with his estranged daughter. When a cure is presented to him in exchange for one final assignment, he's forced to try and juggle his family with the drug's hallucinatory side effects.  Heard will play the woman who offers up the experimental cure.

Heard has a pretty busy 2013 coming up, appearing in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills, Robert Luketic's Paranoia, and the indie dramedy Syrup. So there's no reason for me to keep watching Drive Angry to get my Heard fix. Hopefully McG won't screw things up too badly when filming on Three Days to Kill begins shortly. [Variety]

New trailer for 'Syrup' with Amber Heard and Shiloh Fernandez

Oh yay, another movie about the pervasive nature of marketing and the destructive nature of consumerism. Didn't we just get one of those with Branded a couple of weeks ago? Wasn't Morgan Spurlock's The Greatest Movie Ever Sold enough? Apparently not, and the current hot topic will be taken on again in Syrup, an adaptation of Max Barry's debut novel. At least this one has a pretty sweet cast to go along with it, who get a chance to check out in the newly released trailer.

Directed by Aram Rapaport, Syrup is a comedic satire which follows a guy named Scat(Shiloh Fernandez), who comes up with an idea for a cynical new product called "Fukk", described as "the American Dream in a fu**ing can". He pitches it to the weirdly named 6(Amber Heard), a rep at Coca-Cola, who wants to buy it. But Scat discovers that his roommate Sneaky Pete(Kellan Lutz) has stolen the copyright and sold it himself. Honestly, it sounds stupid and not particularly insightful, which is backed up by the trailer which is too smug for its own good.

Brittany Snow, Josh Pais, and Rachel Dratch co-star, but the film has yet to secure any stateside distribution. It'll be turning up at Sundance next year where it'll be looking for a buyer. Check out the trailer below....

Kristen Stewart not going back to 'Cali'; Amber Heard to step in?

Hmmm...maybe the temptation of Alex Pettyfer was too much for Kristen Stewart to handle in the wake of her recent tabloid scandals? Whatever her reasons, it appears Stewart has dropped out of the indie thriller, Cali, which she had been on board to star in and produce since last April. So what gives?

Honestly, it may just be a scheduling thing. Or maybe she doesn't want the added attention of being splashed across the cover of every rag magazine, as she would be forced to snuggle up with the heartthrob Pettyfer. Makes for some fairly obvious tabloid fodder, don't you think?  Stewart would have played Mya, who along with her boyfriend Chris(Pettyfer) make a ton of cash on a fake snuff film, then hightail it out of the San Fernando Valley. Years later, when they're forced to return to take care of a personal situation, they must contend with the wacky band of characters they screwed over.

Filming was set to begin fairly soon, so Voltage Pictures is going to have to scramble to find a suitable replacement. The word is that Amber Heard is in the crosshairs now, but nothing has been made official. We'll see what happens, and if this forces director Nick Cassavetes(Alpha Dog) to make any major changes. Albert Hughes' 'Motor City' loses Gary Oldman and Amber Heard

Albert Hughes must have really pissed off the casting gods in a past life or something. Forget all the problems he went through with the failed live-action Akira, he's having just as much trouble casting up his crime flick, Motor City. Things started off strong with fast rising star, Dominic Cooper, in the lead role. He moved on to do another film, which led to a string of attached talent including Chris Evans, Jake Gyllenhaal(for like a day), and Jeremy Renner before finally settling on Gerard Butler. And I do mean settling.

Now it's starting all over again, only it's with the supporting cast, which had sounded quite impressive. Amber Heard and Gary Oldman have departed the film, according to Variety. While they don't give any reasons why, it likely has to do with scheduling as both are too busy to wait on the delayed production to get started. Heard should begin filming on Machete Kills soon, while Oldman will be making The Dark Knight Rises press rounds in the coming weeks. He also has a couple of projects on the way.

Motor City still has a decent hook to it, as the Chad St. John scripted film follows a petty crook framed for murder, only to get out years later seeking some payback. What's so special about that? The main character only speaks one line of dialogue the entire time. We'll see where this ends up, and I imagine it won't take long to find replacements.

Gary Oldman is back as the bad guy in Albert Hughes' crime flick, 'Motor City'

I love Gary Oldman, and am pleased as punch to finally see the versatile actor get the Oscar recognition he's so long deserved. But that's enough of him playing the good guy, ok? He'll be the altruistic Jim Gordon later this year in The Dark Knight Rises, and while I'm sure he'll be great, to me he's at his best when playing wacky villains. He'll get his shot to do it again as part of Albert Hughes' noirish crime thriller, Motor City.

Dominic Cooper(The Devil's Double) will take on the lead role, which if reports are true only has like one line of dialogue, as a small time criminal framed and sent to prison, only to get out years later and seek revenge. Along the way he'll try to rescue the woman he loves, played by Amber Heard, who is under the influence of Oldman's crime boss character. The highly lauded script comes from Chad St. John, with filming set to begin in April.

Before The Dark Knight Rises hits in July, Oldman will be seen next on the red carpet of the Academy Awards, vying for the Best Actor award for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. [THR]

The Sunday Drive: 2/27/11

3. Cedar Rapids
I could rightfully put Gnomeo & Juliet into this slot but I want people to seek out and find Cedar Rapids before it disappears from theaters. Starring Ed Helms(The Hangover) as a naive small town insurance salesman, sent to a conference in the bustling metropolis(not!) of Cedar Rapids for what turns out to be a weekend of debauchery.
2. Hall Pass
The Farrelly Brothers are back with their best, and dirtiest comedy in years. Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis make for a hilarious pair as bored husbands playing the field during a guilt free week from marriage.  How many years do I have to wait before I get my 'hall pass'?

1. Drive Angry 3D
Was there ever any doubt? There's something to be said about a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be and who it's audience is. Drive Angry is a guilty pleasure, aspiring to be little more than another trashy B-movie vengeance thriller, but it does it so well! Nicolas Cage is a stone cold killer who escapes from Hell to exact revenge on the cult that killed his family and kidnapped his granddaughter. Amber Heard torches the screen as his sexy sidekick, but the real score is William Fichtner as Satan's overconfident bounty hunter, The Accountant.

DVD Pick of the Week: Fish Tank
Director Andrea Arnold struck gold when she discovered her fiery star, Katie Jarvis, on the street arguing with her boyfriend. It was the electricity and raw energy she saw in Jarvis that made her instantly cast the actress in her very first role. It's her power that charges this tough, often depressing look at the life of Mia Williams, a rebellious and tough girl living in an Essex ghetto. Her life is little more than a series of problematic interludes, arguments with her mother and bratty sister, or getting into fist fights with the local girls who hate her. But things really start to get serious when Mia gets tangled into a complicated and dangerous relationsip with her mother's new boyfriend(Michael Fassbender).

Trailer Time: Drive Angry 3D, starring Nicolas Cage

I don't care what anyone says, I think Drive Angry looks like a ton of fun. Certainly looks better than Nic Cage's Season of the Witch, which looks awful no matter how many times they re-cut the trailer. The story is delightfully wacky stuff. Cage is a hardened criminal who escapes from hell in order to exact revenge on the men who killed his daughter. He's joined on his bloody quest by a sexy waittress(Amber Heard) with a cherry red muscle car. Satanic cults, vicious assassins, and even the Devil are the order of the day. How can you not want to see this? This trailer, which is actually the international version, spells out exactly how crazy this flick is going to be.

Drive Angry 3D will skid into theaters on February 11th 2011. Thanks to BleedingCool for the video, which you can check out below!

Trailer Time: Drive Angry 3D, starring Nicolas Cage

Let's hope this turns out better than Patrick Lussier's last flick, My Bloody Valentine 3-D. The first official trailer for Summit Entertainment's Drive Angery has been released, starring Nicolas Cage as a violent criminal who literally breaks out of Hell to get revenge on the cult leader that murdered his daughter. Sound crazy? The trailer is delightfully cheesy, and I love William Fichtner's deadpan delivery as Satan's right hand man. Amber Heard's shaky southern accent? Not so much. Her tight shorts? Yes.

Drive Angry 3D is due to hit theaters on February 11th, 2011. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think!

Fox reaching out to Brody for Fantastic Four reboot?

Reaching out. Get it? Oh, I kill me. All of a sudden people wanna talk some Fantastic Four. I don't know why. Nobody talked about it before and there were two friggin' movies already. Maybe it's the hope that Fox will get this one right.  If these potential casting rumors turn out to be solid I'd say they're moving in the right direction.

Screenrant says that Fox is looking for some high profile talent to fill the family foursome's shoes this time around. No solid but unknowns like Ioan Gruffudd this time. Instead it's looking like Fox has their eyes set on Jonathan Rhys-Meyers(August Rush) and Adrien Brody(The Pianist) to play "Mr. Fantastic" Reed Richards.

As for the lady who'll be reaping the benefits of Reed's stretching ability, the same two buxom blondes who seem to be attached to every comic book role are again the frontrunners: Amber Heard(The Joneses) and Alice Eve(She's Out of My League).  Heard is said to have already met with Fox about playing "The Invisible Woman" Susan Storm, but that's not confirmed just yet. I doubt any fanboys care who gets the role, as long as she has big cans, long blonde hair, and looks good opposite a 6 foot 3 pile of walking bricks.

I don't understand the Meyers thing one bit. He's too young and pretty to play Reed, and not nearly dorky enough. Meyers tried dorky in From Paris with Love earlier this year and it didn't work out too hot. Brody is another one who seems to be up for every major comic book adaptation lately, and while I don't think he has the look either I've learned to stop judging his abilities based on appearance. He certainly proved me wrong in Predators.

Right now this is all just speculation, but worth keeping an eye on. I don't expect FF to begin production any time soon, but expect the rumors to start picking up pretty fast from here.
