Alexander Payne's 'Downsizing' Adds Alec Baldin, Jason Sudeikis, and Neil Patrick Harris

When Alexander Payne first tried to mount his social satire Downsizing some years ago, he found that he wasn't experienced quite experienced enough to handle a film of its scope. But with a few more projects in the can (like The Descendants and Nebraska), he's begun reassembling the pieces of his passion project in earnest. Matt Damon and Reese Witherspoon are on board, and some weeks ago Payne mentioned that he wanted Alec Baldwin in a supporting role. Well, now he's got him plus a couple of other big names.

The Wrap reports Baldwin, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jason Sudeikis have joined Downsizing, a high concept film set in a world where people are now able to shrink down in size to help fight against the depletion of Earth's natural resources. Damon and Witherspoon play a husband and wife who agree to shrink down thinking it will make their lives better, but problems arise when she changes her mind at the last minute.

Filming on Downsizing is to begin next year and should be in theaters in 2017.

Review: 'Horrible Bosses 2' starring Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, and Charlie Day

Here's the thing about Horrible Bosses: it's pretty funny....at first. There's a lot to love about a film that is basically mean-spirited wish fulfillment about the desire we've all had to do awful things to our bosses. Who wouldn't like that? Try to watch it again lately? It doesn't hold up, and certainly doesn't beg for a sequel. But it made $200M and so now we have Horrible Bosses 2, a lame and uninspired follow-up directed by the guy who inflicted That's My Boy on you a couple of years ago.

Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, and Jason Sudeikis return as Dale, Nick, and Kurt, but they weren't the funniest part of the first film; the bosses were! That's the case here, as well, with Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Spacey returning to indulge in the chance to play nasty and depraved, and we love them for it. The plot this time around has the moronic trio deciding to launch their own business, so THEY are now the horrible bosses in question. Well, they aren't actually bosses until they hire employees, right? Enter Christoph Waltz as a sleazy rich businessman with Chris Pine as his son Rex, who proceeds to cheat the guys out of millions of dollars, ruining their company before it's even really started. So what do our murderous heroes do in retaliation? Well they can't plot another murder because that didn't turn out so well (although they got what they wanted out of it), so instead the guys decide to kidnap Rex for a hefty ransom.

Okay, so it's a given that the crime would be a total dud and that they'd mess up every single facet of it, but what's weird is how much the trio have changed. Dale is pretty much the same; still fighting off his oversexed boss Julia (Aniston), but Nick and Kurt are completely different. Nick was the "brains" of the operation last time, certainly smart enough not to fall into the kind of financial trap (he was an economics wiz in the first movie!) that screws them over this time. Kurt is such a creepy womanizer now that it's hard to like him at all. The only thing that gets them by is the easy chemistry between the three actors; they are genuinely fun to watch together because it seems like so much of the best gags are unscripted. That's a good thing because the actual screenplay by John Morris and Sean Anders (the aforementioned That's My Boy director) is underwhelming at best. To be fair, Anders also directed Sex Drive which is vastly underrated, but he doesn't seem to "get" Horrible Bosses and never makes good use of the concept or the cast. This time around we're meant to hate the slick corporate CEOs, the ones who get $50M golden parachutes to reward their failures and get rich on the backs of working stiffs. That's all fine, but the problem is that the bad guys aren't completely heinous here, at least not in comparison to three guys who can now add kidnapping to their growing criminal resume. In fact, it's Spacey's imprisoned character who sums up our heroes (and the film) perfectly when he says "You're all fucking morons".

While Aniston, Spacey, and the returning Jamie Foxx as "Motherfucker" Jones are great, they are firmly in the background this time and not key to the plot, which is a huge mistake. Waltz, who we can all admit is one of the best actors working today when it comes to playing villains, doesn't make any kind of impression. On the flip side, the generally-bland Chris Pine has maybe found his calling in roles that allow him to get a little crazy.  Horrible Bosses 2 has a few moments, but it's hard to escape the feeling that this film simply didn't need to happen, and there aren't enough laughs to justify its existence.

Shower Buddies Plot a Kidnapping in New 'Horrible Bosses 2' Trailer

Part of the reason Horrible Bosses did as well as it did, earning more than $200M, was a supporting cast willing to go to some outlandish lengths. Jennifer Aniston's incredibly raunchy performance was a stand-out, and it looks like it will be again in Horrible Bosses 2. But its the dufus trio of Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Jason Bateman as would-be kidnappers who really seem to be at the top of their game in the latest trailer, giving the impression it may actually be funnier than the original. Here's the synopsis:

Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick (Bateman), Dale (Day) and Kurt (Sudeikis) decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business in “Horrible Bosses 2.” But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

Also starring Christoph Waltz, Chris Pine, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx, Horrible Bosses 2 is directed by Sean Anders and opens November 26th.

New Trailer and Poster for 'Horrible Bosses 2' Takes Care of Business

The surprising box office success of Horrible Bosses had a lot to do with the supporting cast, which featured Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston in wildly over the top roles. And it looks like the sequel, which brings them both back while adding Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine into the mix, will be even crazier than before.

Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, and Jason Sudeikis are back for Horrible Bosses 2, and the new trailer is pretty stacked from top to bottom with laughs. The guys basically got away with trying to kill their awful bosses last time around, but this time it's all about kidnapping. Specifically they want to hold for ransom the wealthy investor (Waltz) who crushed their hopes of owning a business. Also back is Jamie Foxx as "Mothafucka" Jones as the Yoda of their bumbling criminal exploits. Oh, and Jennifer Aniston really wants to get plowed.

Directed by Sean Anders, Horrible Bosses 2 opens November 26th.

Jason Sudeikis and Jeremy Irons Enter the 'Race'; Dev Patel is 'The Man Who Knew Infinity'

* Focus Features has picked up the rights to the upcoming Jesse Owens biopic, Race, and as part of the announcement they revealed Jason Sudeikis and Jeremy Irons have joined the cast. Stephan James will play Owens, the track & field star who challenged Adolf Hitler's idea of Aryan supremacy at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Sudeikis will play Owens' obsessive mentor, Larry Snyder, with Owens as American Olympic Committee member Avery Brundage. Stephen Hopkins is directing from a screenplay by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel.

* Speaking of Jeremy Irons, he's also set to star in The Man Who Knew Infinity, a film that has been in the works for more than eight years. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Devika Bhise will star with Matthew Brown making his writing and directorial debut. Patel plays autodidact math genius Srinivasa Ramanujan who, despite his formal training, is plucked from obscurity in Edwardian India by G.H. Hardy (Irons) to become a leader in the field. [Variety]

The Gang's All Here in First Trailer for 'Horrible Bosses 2'

When the first Horrible Bosses opened in 2011 it came with a ton of hype for a couple of reasons. For starters it played on the idea that every hard working American working a 9-5 secretly hates their boss and wants them dead. It also had a great supporting cast of Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and Colin Farrell playing wildly over-the-top despicable characters. In short it looked like a lot of fun, and $209M later we had one of the top grossing R-rated movies ever made, enough reason for Warner Bros. to order up a sequel even though the first movie didn't really demand it.

Sean Anders is on board to helm Horrible Bosses 2, and the first trailer brings the entire gang back with a few new additions. This time around the three stooges Nick, Dale, and Kurt have decided to be their own bosses and start a business. But when a wealthy investor screws them over, they foolishly decide to pull off a kidnapping plot that predictably goes awry and they must turn to a familiar face (the returning Jamie Foxx) for some help. Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine are also on board although we only catch a brief glimpse of the latter, and Aniston appears to be as frisky as ever which could be good for a few laughs. Overall this looks about as uninspired as one might expect.

Horrible Bosses 2 opens on November 26th.

Jason Sudeikis Joins 'Loomis Fargo'; Tom Hanks Goes to 'Ithaca'; Will Poulter Boards 'The Revenant'

* Jason Sudeikis, who is already set to lead a Fletch reboot, has joined the comedy formerly known as Loomis Fargo. Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, and Kristen Wiig star in the Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) film about armored truck driver who teams up with a gorgeous co-worker and a group of inexperienced criminals to steal $20M from a bank. The spending sprees they on leave an obvious trail of evidence for the cops to follow, and the driver ends up getting double-crossed by his accomplices. Sudeikis will play a hit man in the story which is inspired by actual events. [TheWrap]

* Tom Hanks will make a cameo appearance in Meg Ryan's directorial debut, Ithaca, an adaptation of William Saroyan's 1943 novel, The Human Comedy. This will be the fourth collaboration between the two after they were America's favorite couple in some of the most memorable rom-coms ever made. The coming-of-age drama is set during WWII and tells the story of teenaged Homer Macauley, a telegraph bike messenger whose older brother Ulysses has been shipped off to war. Left to take care of his widowed mother, older sister, and younger brother, Homer delivers message of love, pain, death, and friendship revealing the true effects of war on the homefront. Hanks would play Homer's father. [THR]

* Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu already has Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy on board for his revenge thriller, The Revenant, and now he's made one more addition in Will Poulter. Last seen in We're the Millers, Poulter joins the film set in the 1820s and follows a "frontiersman on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling." [Variety]

Jason Sudeikis is the New Fletch in 'Fletch Won'

A remake of the 1985 comedy Fletch has been in the works for a very long time with a lot of people attached at various stages. Most prominent of those was Kevin Smith, who considers the film one of his all-time favorites, and if he couldn't get it off the ground then the thought was nobody could. Warner Bros. took on the project a few years ago and haven't done much with it, but now it's back on with Jason Sudeikis as the bumbling investigate journalist.

According to THR, Sudeikis has nabbed the lead in Fletch Won, the first of a planned franchise based on the books by author Greg McDonald. Apparently it's a role perfect for Saturday Night Live vets as he'll be taking on the part personified by Chevy Chase in the original film and the 1989 sequel, Fletch Lives. David List, a rep for McDonald's estate, wrote the script which will be an origin story described as a "gritty action comedy" and closer in tone to the novels than the straight-comedy of the movies. McDonald wrote the first book in 1974, followed by eleven sequels so there's a wealth of material to draw from if the reboot proves to be a hit.

It'll be interesting to see who is lined up as a director, but it wouldn't be surprising if the studio turned to someone Sudeikis has had success with in the past. He's scored big hits with We're the Millers, The Campaign, and Horrible Bosses, all projects under the Warner Bros. umbrella. Sudeikis is currently set to star in Horrible Bosses 2, due out later this year.

Gary Ross to Pen 'East of Eden' for Jennifer Lawrence; 'We're the Millers' Sequel Moves Forward

* Last fall we learned Jennifer Lawrence was looking to re-team with The Hunger Games director Gary Ross for a two-part adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden. Ross was already directing but now he's agreed to pen the screenplay, as well.  The book "tells of two families over the course of two generations, loosely alluding to the biblical tale of Cain and Abel, focusing on a father, his two sons, and the children's mother, whom they thought was dead." It was famously adapted into a 1955 film starring James Dean. This one's still a ways off as Ross is in line to direct Peter and the Starcatchers first.

* Not that this will come as any surprise, but New Line is looking for a sequel to last year's $270M-grossing comedy, We're the Millers. According to THR, they've hired Adam Sztykiel (Due Date) to pen the follow-up, with Rawson Marshall Thurber expected to return as director. But what about the cast? Jennifer Aniston, Will Poulter, Jason Sudeikis, and Emma Roberts are all expected back although no deals are in place. Expect that to be rectified soon.

'Horrible Bosses' trio Seth Gordon, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis set for 'One Night On the Hudson'

Considering the surprising $200M+ success of Horrible Bosses, it was never a question of whether or not the cast would be reunited, it was a matter of when. We soon learned the gang would be getting back together for a sequel, which has recently been confirmed. Now director Seth Gordon, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis will split off from Jason Bateman for another film in a totally different genre.

Gordon is set to direct One Night On the Hudson, a thriller which has Day and Sudeikis as a rookie cop and his cynical partner who take on corrupt cops as they transport a federal witness from New Jersey to Manhattan. The script by T.J. Fixman has been around for awhile, and it's a little surprising that someone thought Day and Sudeikis would make for a proper fit. Then again, would there be any shock if the story is adjusted to add a few more laughs?

This one's still in the early stages of development, so anything could happen between now and when production begins. Day will be seen on the big screen next in Pacific Rim, while Sudeikis has We're the Millers opposite Jennifer Aniston. Gordon recently directed Identity Thief, his third film to cross the $100M mark. [THR]

Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis confirmed for 'Horrible Bosses' sequel

In a year that saw R-rated comedies kick a lot of butt at the box office, Horrible Bosses was one of the big surprises. The film was powered by a concept everyone can relate to, the desire to off your own boss, and while we can argue about how effective it ultimately was, the fact is it cleared north of $200M worldwide. Sequel time!

We first learned early last year that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were rehired to start work on the sequel, and now THR reports that Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis are signed to return. A lot of folks weren't too fond of Jamie Foxx's colorfully-named murder consultant, Motherfucker Jones, but they may have to get used to it because he's in talks to reprise the part. Seth Gordon is back in the director's chair, and he's proving to be one of the most bankable filmmakers in the comedy genre. He recently directed Identity Thief, which as of now is the year's top-grossing film.

The sequel will have the gang taking on a whole new bunch of crazy bosses, but the door's still open for Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Spacey to make an appearance. Aniston was great last time as Day's oversexed boss, so hopefully she'll make a cameo or something. Seth Gordon is back in the director's chair,

Horrible Bosses....well, let's just say it didn't help up upon a second viewing. I really enjoyed it the first time, but now I have a hard time justifying its presence in my Blu-Ray collection. Filming is slated to begin this summer, so expect to see it some time in early 2014.

Batman admires Supergirl's crotch in new 'Movie 43' red band trailer

"My friend is bleeding out of her vagina!" If that line just disgusted or offended you then Movie 43 probably isn't going to be the film for you. The ensemble comedy features practically every actor you've ever heard of, far too many to list here, in a collection of the filthiest, nastiest, disturbing, and politically incorrect sketches on a range of topics, but mostly involving sex and body fluids.

While we just saw a full red band trailer for the film a few weeks ago, a brief new one has been released which is basically just a snapshot at some of the funniest bits, including Jason Sudeikis as Batman admiring Supergirl's(Kristen Bell) hairy crotch. Yep, that's the level of humor you can expect to find. Definitely not for the kiddies, but it looks absolutely perfect for me.

Movie 43 opens on January 25th. Check out the trailer and synopsis below....

Warning: This movie is not for the weak-stomached, faint of heart, or easily offended.
In Movie 43, comedy is served steaming hot by director Peter Farrelly of The Farrelly Brothers (Something About Mary, Dumb & Dumber) in one of the most original comedies ever made. Starring Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Halle Berry, Leslie Bibb, Kate Bosworth, Gerard Butler, Bobby Cannavale, Kieran Culkin, Josh Duhamel, Anna Faris, Richard Gere, John Hodgman, Terrence Howard,  Hugh Jackman, Johnny Knoxville, Justin Long, Stephen Merchant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, ChloĆ« Grace Moretz, Chris Pratt, Liev Schreiber, Seann William Scott, Emma Stone, Jason Sudeikis, Uma Thurman, Naomi Watts, and Kate Winslet, Movie 43 is jaw-dropping, uproarious, outrageous fun.

Sure Shots: Jennifer Aniston; 'Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho'; Tim Burton

* After an eternity in development, the gears may finally be turning for We're the Millers, a road trip comedy that at most recent report had Jason Bateman set to star. Well, he's out, with Jennifer Aniston stepping in and her Horrible Bosses co-star, Jason Sudeikis, close to signing. Written by Wedding Crashers scribes, Bob Fisher and Steve Faber, the story would have Sudeikis as a drug dealer who creates a fake family and heads off into an RV to cross the border into Mexico and pick up over 1,000lbs of marijuana for one big score. Aniston would play a hooker who gets roped into the scheme playing the mom of the family. Rawson Thurber(Dodgeball) is still attached to direct, but there's no timetable for when, or if, this will shoot. [Deadline]

*  CSI star Wallace Langham will play legendary graphic designer Saul Bass in Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, the film by director Sacha Gervasi which already boasts Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, James D'Arcy, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Stuhlbarg, Toni Collette, Michael Wincott, and Danny Huston. Wow. Bass was known for his inventive title and credit sequences(The Man with the Golden Arm is the best in my opinion), and he did the same for Psycho along with serving as storyboard artist. He would work alongside Hitchcock many times, but as proved to be the case with others involved with the film, the director's personality would cause this to be the final time.  The film is based on the novel by Stephen Rebello. [Variety]

* Does Tim Burton have a new running buddy not named Tim Burton? It appears so. The director will pair up with Dark Shadows scribe Seth Grahame-Smith(he also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which Burton produced) for a stop-motion animated film which Burton will direct. Titled Night of the Living, details are under wraps at this point but it sounds like some sort of zombie movie. Grahame-Smith will also provide the script for Burton's Beetlejuice sequel, and will next adapt his own upcoming novel, Unholy Night.

Olivia Wilde, Jason Sudeikis, Brie Larson, and Fred Armisen to star in 'Relanxious'

What the f**k is a "Relanxious"? Do I even want to know? Sounds like a word used to describe movies with bad titles. Whatever it means, Relanxious is the title of what could be a promising new comedy featuring those off screen lovebirds, Jason Sudeikis and the ever present Olivia Wilde. In 2011, the two combined to star in seven movies, so how exactly they found time to meet is beyond me.

Marking the directorial debut of writer Christopher Storer, the film has Wilde starring as the anxiety riddled Barrett, who meets and becomes friends with the agoraphobic George, played by Sudeikis. Since neither has the courage to actually leave their homes, any chance at a courtship is limited to phone calls in which they discuss how great a romance they might have. Brie Larson(21 Jump Street, The United States of Tara) will play Barrett's sister, with Fred Armisen(Portlandia) as George's best friend and only contact with the outside world.

I'm not a big fan of Armisen, but the rest of the cast, especially Larson, give me some hope for something better than the plot sounds. [Deadline]

Trailer Time: Horrible Bosses, starring Jason Bateman and Jason Sudeikis

Why haven't I been able to get excited for Horrible Bosses? It's got all the right pieces. A strong cast consisting of Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, and Colin Farrell. Seth Gordon is directing, and I loved his debut The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. I even dig the premise. Bateman, Sudeikis, and Charlie Day(It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are three guys who think their lives will be much better if their bosses were all dead. So they dream up a scheme to take them all out.

Maybe I just needed to see some actual footage, but I think this new trailer for the film looks hilarious.Farrell's comb over hairdo is reason enough to check this out, yet you throw in a Aniston as a sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen and I'm all in. Even Jamie Foxx looks like he's having a ball as the "murder consultant" helping the guys pull off their plan. Check out the trailer below, and let me know if you're excited at all for Horrible Bosses.  It's due to open in theaters on July 8th.

The Sunday Drive: 2/27/11

3. Cedar Rapids
I could rightfully put Gnomeo & Juliet into this slot but I want people to seek out and find Cedar Rapids before it disappears from theaters. Starring Ed Helms(The Hangover) as a naive small town insurance salesman, sent to a conference in the bustling metropolis(not!) of Cedar Rapids for what turns out to be a weekend of debauchery.
2. Hall Pass
The Farrelly Brothers are back with their best, and dirtiest comedy in years. Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis make for a hilarious pair as bored husbands playing the field during a guilt free week from marriage.  How many years do I have to wait before I get my 'hall pass'?

1. Drive Angry 3D
Was there ever any doubt? There's something to be said about a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be and who it's audience is. Drive Angry is a guilty pleasure, aspiring to be little more than another trashy B-movie vengeance thriller, but it does it so well! Nicolas Cage is a stone cold killer who escapes from Hell to exact revenge on the cult that killed his family and kidnapped his granddaughter. Amber Heard torches the screen as his sexy sidekick, but the real score is William Fichtner as Satan's overconfident bounty hunter, The Accountant.

DVD Pick of the Week: Fish Tank
Director Andrea Arnold struck gold when she discovered her fiery star, Katie Jarvis, on the street arguing with her boyfriend. It was the electricity and raw energy she saw in Jarvis that made her instantly cast the actress in her very first role. It's her power that charges this tough, often depressing look at the life of Mia Williams, a rebellious and tough girl living in an Essex ghetto. Her life is little more than a series of problematic interludes, arguments with her mother and bratty sister, or getting into fist fights with the local girls who hate her. But things really start to get serious when Mia gets tangled into a complicated and dangerous relationsip with her mother's new boyfriend(Michael Fassbender).
