Review: 'Veronica Mars' Starring Kristen Bell

Be honest, the idea of a Veronica Mars movie is something you never thought would happen. The show was a lynchpin of the late UPN network (eventually part of CW in its final season) and it was a cult hit with a dedicated by tiny audience who loved their feisty teenaged detective, played by Kristen Bell in her defining role. When it ended after a sporadic third season, show runner Rob Thomas kept hope alive for a comeback, eventually turning to the fans to help Kickstart a big screen effort. And those fans responded in record-breaking numbers. But a crowd sourced project such as this comes with challenges, namely balancing the wants of the fans (who literally have an investment in it) with a story that doesn't simply tread old ground. Fortunately, Veronica Marsnot only recaptures everything that made the series so beloved, but it may even create some new "marshmallows" in the process.

A breezy two-minute intro recaps the series, told in Veronica's slangy vernacular. It's an effective reintroduction (or introduction for some) to the character and her various relationships built and destroyed over the years, particularly her rocky love affair with bad boy Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring). Picking up ten years after the series finale, Veronica has escaped the snake pit of upper-class Southern California town of Neptune and headed to New York to become a high-powered lawyer. She used to be one of Neptune's cool kids before her Sheriff father, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) ran afoul of the town elite and got fired. He became a principled private investigator, Veronica became the Nancy Drew of Neptune, and neither won them a lot of friends. All these years later, she has no intention of ever coming home, not even for the 10-year high school reunion. But when she sees a report that Logan has been accused in the murder of his pop star girlfriend, Veronica is convinced to return and defend him.

Within minutes it's like nothing has changed, which is great for us fans but not so great for Veronica.  Her mother was an alcoholic, and a recurring theme in the series was that of addiction. The film takes this idea and uses it as the primary framework for Veronica's every move. She's addicted to this life, the danger and excitement of it. When she calls herself an "adrenaline junkie" early on, we know it to be true even as she fights against backsliding into old habits. Speaking of which, one thing she simply can't quit is Logan, and the spark between them is obvious and palpable. That causes problems with her current boyfriend, the dull as dry toast good guy "Piz" (Chris Lowell), who is waiting for her back home. Veronica hooks back up with her best friends, Wallace (Percy Daggs III) and Mac (Tina Majorino), who also find themselves roped into her investigation.

It's impossible to carry over the subtleties of every relationship in a condensed 100-minute package, but Thomas does a pretty good job of giving them to us in broader strokes. We get a sense of the deep affection and playfulness between Veronica and her father, which continues to be the central bond in the story. The love triangle, such as it is, between Logan, Veronica, and Piz may seem a bit formulaic without the benefit of watching the show and knowing the complicated back story. In general it's like the show never went off the air and everybody is just picking up right where they left off. Pretty much every major character a loyal follower would want to see makes an appearance: Weevil (Francis Capra), Dick (Ryan Hansen), Gia (Krysten Ritter), Vinnie Van Lowe (Ken Marino), and they all have key parts to play. They aren't just there for the sentimental memories, although that may be a small part of it. It's kind of unavoidable with a film like this, really.  New faces fit like a glove, with the best being Gaby Hoffmann in yet another wacko role as a suspect with an unhealthy Logan Echolls obsession.

As for the mystery itself, it suffers from the compressed time frame. Thomas is used to having full seasons to flesh out all of the key players, drop clues, toss in a few swerves. Here he's torn between servicing our need to see Veronica reconnect and properly clouding the question of Logan's innocence. Long stretches go by when the murder becomes an afterthought, and the lack of attention paid to it only underscores that it isn't really compelling, anyway.

Written by Thomas and Diane Ruggiero, the dialogue is as razor sharp and funny as ever. The characters have always sounded like they were ripped straight from the Whedon-verse, and sure enough there's a pretty hilarious Buffy reference thrown in for good measure. The best part about it is that Veronica remains one of the toughest, most original female lead characters in recent memory. As a feminist icon she stands as a shining example, and not having her on TV regularly has left a pretty big void yet to be filled. Hopefully the film does well enough that it this won't be the last we see of her, but just in case it is things are resolved neatly enough.

Cinematic fan-fiction for the show's most impassioned audience, Veronica Mars is everything fans could have hoped it would be. It's a film made for fans by fans, and that's something all us marshmallows can be extremely proud of.

Return to Neptune with Five 'Veronica Mars' Clips

In just a few short hours, Veronica Mars fans will be lining up with tickets in their hot little hands to see the feature film they thought would never happen. After kicking in a pile of cash to get the movie made, they have every right to be excited for the return of Neptune's (formerly) teen detective. The questions remains whether the film, which has a small but extremely loyal audience, can become a box office success story. Can Kristen Bell slip back into the role she left behind seven years ago? And will director and show creator Rob Thomas be able to please the fans who have invested in bringing Veronica Mars back?

We'll know the answers to those questions soon enough, but for now here are five new clips from the film. Let's be honest, though, most of the people going to see this later tonight aren't going to watch them for fear of having something spoiled. Don't really blame ya. Anyway, these scenes introduce us to Neptune's new Sheriff (Jerry O'Connell), and he's just as corrupt as the last one. Plus we see the hilarious Ryan Hansen as Veronica's antagonistic frenemy, Dick, and Enrico Colantoni as her loyal father, Keith Mars.

Veronica Mars hits theaters and VOD on March 14th. Look out for my review today at 4:30pm, and if you want more of Kristen Bell this is the place to go.

The Talent Show: Kristen Bell

This week millions of fangirls and fanboys will get their wish when the crowd sourced Veronica Mars movie hits theaters. Admittedly I'm just now catching onto the TV show, it's definitely worth a watch, but let's be honest, it's number 1 gift to audiences around the world is the impossibly cute Kristen Bell. Quite literally the definition of the "Girl Next Door" type...though I don't remember any girls this hot living next door. Bell brings not only sex appeal but a smart and capable persona highlighted by a quick wit and undeniable gift for comic timing. Cementing her place in the hearts of red blooded men everywhere with the title role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and as the bored house wife yearning for something wild in Couples Retreat Kristen Bell has made herself more than just a cult TV show star, oh....and she married Dax Shepard from Punk'd but I guess we can let that slide. This weekend will be a huge proving ground for the possibility of more cult shows made into movies, I hope for all of our sakes that Veronica Mars kills it at the box office but, sink or swim, Kristen Bell won't be going anywhere...and thank GOD for that!

Watch the Opening Two Minutes of 'Veronica Mars'

In just a few short days, eager fans of Neptune's favorite detective will get what they've been clamoring and for when Veronica Mars hits theaters. The Kickstarter-funded film brings back show creator Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell, and nearly all of the cult favorite show's cast for her first big screen case, and now we can see exactly how it all begins.

Warner Bros. has released the first two minutes of the movie, and it's basically a rundown of all the events leading up to this moment. This is clearly for those who may be stepping into Veronica's world for the first time, but it also serves as a nice reminder of everything she's gone through, including her complicated relationship with ex-boyfriend, Logan. It's Logan who brings her back to Neptune after becoming a successful lawyer, in order to help clear his name from a murder charge.

Also starring Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Krysten Ritter, Chris Lowell, Percy Daggs III, Tina Majorino, Francis Capra, and Ken Marino, Veronica Mars opens March 14th.

New Clip and Photos from 'Veronica Mars'

Sold out fan events and a hefty chunk of Kickstarter change should tell you there's a pretty big group of folks waiting anxiously for the Veronica Mars movie. Is it enough for the big screen version of the ratings-challenged TV series to make much of a splash at the box office? That's the question, and the results could have a huge impact on the future of crowd-sourced movies. Perhaps that's a bit much to lay on a small budgeted film about a Nancy Drew-esque detective with no big stars, but then again nobody thought Veronica Mars would be in theaters in the first place. You go, marshmallows!

A new clip and a handful of photos have been released, and it features the show's most important relationship in my opinion, that of Veronica and her detective daddy, Keith Mars. Kristen Bell is back in the title role, of course, with Enrico Colantoni as her father, and also appearing are Percy Daggs III and the awesome Tina Majorino as her friends. Now a hot shot lawyer, Veronica has returned to Neptune when her ex-boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring) is accused of murder, and it happens to coincide with the big high school reunion she wants no part of. Oh, and there's a mention of the hated Piz (Chris Lowell) in this scene, so you Team Logan folks can get out your pitchforks.

Having kicked in my share of dough to make this movie happen, I'm pretty excited for Veronica Mars to get here on March 14th.

First Poster for 'Veronica Mars' Pulls You Back In

Not even cancellation could keep Veronica Mars from solving her greatest case ever; that of the big screen feature film. The $5.7M fans of the show donated to help kickstart things into gear have bought more than just a movie, though. In the last week alone the original series has begun streaming on Amazon Prime; a new trailer debuted and was met with high praise; a cast reunion at Paleyfest was announced, and so was the film's world premiere at SXSW. Pretty decent value, I'd say.

Now the icing on the cake comes with the first official poster, which is pretty nifty, too. It features Veronica and her trusty camera, necessary for any serious private dick, along with a couple of film reels featuring her friends, family, and possible suspects. The story has Veronica returning to Neptune when her former flame, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) is accused of murder.

Written and directed by show creator Rob Thomas, Veronica Mars hits theaters March 14th.

The New 'Veronica Mars' Trailer Takes Us Back to Neptune

"Nine years of radio silence and yet I still kind of knew I could count on you."

Oh Logan, you can always count on Veronica, you know that. And Veronica Mars could always count on its fans, who backed show creator Rob Thomas' Kickstarter campaign to record-breaking levels in order to see their favorite TV detective on the big screen. And now with the film only a couple of months away from hitting theaters, a new trailer has been released.

We got a glimpse of the first trailer back at Comic-Con but this one opens up the story a lot more. Kristen Bell is back as Veronica, who is now a big shot New York City lawyer and...sorry marshmallows....she's still hooked up with Piz (Chris Lowell). But when she catches wind that her former flame Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) is suspected of killing his girlfriend, she drops everything and returns to Neptune, just in time for the big 10-year high school reunion. So many dramatic events converging at once! The gang is all here including the aptly-named Dick (Ryan Hansen), who is still a clown; Tina Majorino as Mac; Percy Daggs III as her best friend Wallace; and Francis Capra as Weevil. But this wouldn't be Veronica Mars without Enrico Colantoni as her loyal pops, Keith Mars.

Veronica Mars opens March 24th 2014.

*UPDATE* "Veronica Mars" movie will be released March 14, 2014; Plus a New Clip

*UPDATE* And to make this announcement just a little more awesome we've included the first official clip. Rejoice!

REJOICE, MARSHMALLOWS: The "Veronica Mars" movie - titled, simply, "Veronica Mars" will be released Friday, March 14, 2014. Dance! Rejoice! Huzzah! JOY AND DELIGHT.

By now you know the deal. You know how rabid us "Veronica Mars" fans are for this movie. And with the release date in place, things seem a little bit brighter today.

Other notable news about the "Veronica Mars" movie? It will get a wider distribution from Warner Brothers than originally intended - no word on how many theaters yet, but we know it will be in more than first planned - and a test screening went really well, according to a chat "Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas had with Entertainment Weekly. So, cool! Cool, cool cool.

Check out the Entertainment Weekly story for an exclusive clip from the film, and try to keep your squealing to a minimum. Or scream your joy from the rooftops! I'm doing it.

(Oh, and that picture of all the guys from "Veronica Mars," wet? That's for you, friends.)

The 'Veronica Mars' movie has a new featurette, same old love triangle

Here's the thing: Jason Dohring, a.k.a. Logan Echolls, does things to me that I CANNOT DISCUSS IN POLITE COMPANY. As in, he's the perfect bad boy, he and Veronica's love is epic, and this new featurette for the Veronica Mars movie doesn't want you to forget it.

By now, you know the story: The Veronica Mars fundraising campaign basically made Kickstarter its bitch, raising shocking amounts of money in a shockingly short time and creating all kinds of Internet backlash centered around the argument of, "Why are we paying money to Warner Bros. so they can make a movie we want to watch, and then we'll have to pay to see that movie, too?" And I get it; really, I do. I know that Warner Bros. is taking advantage of us here. I know that's why the show isn't on Netflix anymore, because they want to make money off of people buying the DVDs. I get all of those logical arguments. But then I watch this featurette, and I'm lost.

Because, as Rob Thomas promised, basically everyone is back! Man, does he know how to please demanding fanboys and fangirls, like yours truly, who wanted a true reunion. And we basically are getting one, since part of the movie takes place at their high school reunion. Meta genius!

Kristen Bell is back as Veronica, of course, and Jason Dohring as Logan, and that guy who plays Piz who actually grew up to be kind of hot, and Mac and Dick and Wallace. The featurette focuses on the love triangle between Veronica, Keith, and Piz, which was introduced in the third and final season and replaced the previous love triangle of Veronica, Duncan, and Logan. I don't think Duncan will be back - he was pretty effectively out of the show after the first season - but Keith Mars and Weevil will be, even though we don't see either of them in this trailer. But there's Deputy Leo! And Gia! And Principal Clemmons! And on and on and on.

And guys, just watch this thing. If you're not grinning like a jerk afterward, you probably don't have a soul. Or you don't like Veronica Mars. And really, what's the difference?

Veronica Mars comes out in spring 2014. Start your countdowns.

Comic-Con: First Trailer for the 'Veronica Mars' Movie

After pitching in a few million bucks to help Kickstart the Veronica Mars film, "Marshmallows" (what fans of the show are called) saw their contribution justified at Comic-Con yesterday when Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell introduced the first trailer. Much of the cast was on hand to show their appreciation to the more than 900,000 Kickstarter backers who helped fund the film, fulfilling a wish that had seemed out of reach since the popular but low-rated show came to an end after three seasons.

Thomas and Bell were joined by Francis Capra, Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino, Chris Lowell, and Jason Dohring. Much of the conversation centered on their appreciation for the fans, but they also had some fun with the ongoing rivalry between fans of Dohring's Logan character and Lowell's Piz character.

Thomas promised the film would be released in early 2014, and he's begun work on a series of Veronica Mars novels, as well.

Possible 'Veronica Mars' movie plot details revealed

It's an exciting time to be a Veronica Mars fan, and now that they've shown their ultimate loyalty by helping fund a $2M Kickstarter campaign (It's now well above $3M) to produce a new film, potential plot details are beginning to emerge.  The latest print issue of Entertainment Weekly features a rapidly-prepared article on what show creator Rob Thomas has planned for Veronica and the residents of Neptune, and not surprisingly it may have to do with murder.  Possible spoilers are below, so please consider yourself warned!

Thomas has said on the Kickstarter page that the film will take place 10 years since the season three finale, and in that time Veronica hasn't taken a single case. Something big draws her back to Neptune, California, and it's something much bigger than her 10-year high school reunion. EW says Veronica's ex, Logan (Jason Dohring), will seek her aid in investigating the murder of his pop star girlfriend, a crime for which he's the primary suspect. Veronica left Hearst and went on to get her bachelor's at Stanford, and then a law degree from Columbia. So she's been plenty busy, and should be more equipped than ever to use the legal system to her best advantage, something she always had a knack for.

Thomas and star Kristen Bell hope to begin filming in June, and the plan is to bring back as many cast members as possible, assuming their schedules allow it. Assuming everything works out, debuting some footage at San Diego Comic-Con this summer isn't out of the question. Warner Bros. Digital Entertainment will market and distribute the film in 2014.

'Veronica Mars' Kickstarter campaign hits $2M goal

Back in 2010, roughly three years since Veronica Mars went off the air to great disappointment by its loyal fans, show creator Rob Thomas was still keeping hope alive that a feature film could get done. The prospects weren't looking too good, though...

Thomas: “I would write it if anyone would finance it. If anyone’s interested in making that movie I am available, Kristen’s available. I would love to do it. I think the closest we came was Joel [Silver] pushing it at Warner Bros. and they didn’t bite. It has sort of gone away.”

Thanks to continued outcry by the fans, Warner Bros. agreed to put a film into production in 2014 if $2M could be raised in only 30 days. Thomas and star Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign this morning to help reach that goal, and it turns out it didn't take a month. It didn't even take an entire day, as the target goal was surpassed in just over 12 hours. That's incredible.

Warner Bros. Digital will now put the film into production for release in 2014, hitting theaters first before going to On Demand. For those unfamiliar, Veronica Mars ran for three seasons and followed the titular character, who began as a high school outsider who solved mysteries while dealing with the social pecking order. She would eventually transition to a college student where her sleuthing continued.

I'm not sure the impact of what was just accomplished can be overstated. This is really a huge moment not just when it comes to crowd-sourced projects, but for all of Hollywood. This puts an incredible amount of power in the hands of the audience, and any show with a dedicated base of support is going to become fair game for a similar campaign.

Really want a 'Veronica Mars' movie? Bad enough to pay for it?

When any critically loved but low-rated TV series goes off the air, inevitably there come the rumors of it being turned into a movie. A lot of this spring forth from the fans, who crank out petitions left and right that never amount to much, and basically blow up message boards with their cries for "more more more"! Rarely does it ever work out, but in the case of the Kristen Bell series Veronica Mars, Warner Bros. is willing to at least give it a shot.

The studio has agreed to produce a Veronica Mars film in 2014, but only if it can raise $2M in the next 30 days. So to that end, show creator Rob Thomas and Bell have started a Kickstarter campaign for it. As of right now, it's up $119K, so if you're like one of the dozens of people who watched the show it's time for you to put your money where your mouth is. Ok, I'm exaggerating a little. Thousands of people watched it, including yours truly.

This is a big deal, and if it succeeds you can bet your butt there will be new campaigns springing up in rapid fire succession. Maybe now would be a good time to start pushing for a proper Dead Like Me film?  Simply go here if you wish to pitch in to the Veronica Mars campaign. As with most Kickstarters, you'll receive some pretty cool stuff depending on the amount you contribute. I pitched in $25, so I can get the Veronica Mars t-shirt I'd never be caught wearing.

New trailer for 'Writers' with Logan Lerman, Greg Kinnear, and Lily Collins

Writers boats a cast that any director would give up their kid for: Greg Kinnear, Logan Lerman, Kristen Bell, Jennifer Connelly, Lily Collins, along with a festival-ready premise surrounding a group of writers experiencing life and love to enhance their craft. So why didn't the film draw more attention when it debuted last year in Toronto? And what does that mean for its future prospects?

Millennium Entertainment picked up the rights and will release the film soon, and in preparation a new trailer has landed online. The story mostly follows a single family, with Kinnear as the Dad and Connelly as his ex-wife, while their children experience sex in totally different ways. It's interesting to see Collins playing a friskier, more provocative role than the goodie-two-shoes we're used to, while Lerman appears to be channeling the same awkwardness from The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In general, the reason why this film may not have garnered much attention is that it's so generic and too much like a thousand other art house comedies.

Written and directed by Josh Boone, Writers opens in limited release on April 19th.

Batman admires Supergirl's crotch in new 'Movie 43' red band trailer

"My friend is bleeding out of her vagina!" If that line just disgusted or offended you then Movie 43 probably isn't going to be the film for you. The ensemble comedy features practically every actor you've ever heard of, far too many to list here, in a collection of the filthiest, nastiest, disturbing, and politically incorrect sketches on a range of topics, but mostly involving sex and body fluids.

While we just saw a full red band trailer for the film a few weeks ago, a brief new one has been released which is basically just a snapshot at some of the funniest bits, including Jason Sudeikis as Batman admiring Supergirl's(Kristen Bell) hairy crotch. Yep, that's the level of humor you can expect to find. Definitely not for the kiddies, but it looks absolutely perfect for me.

Movie 43 opens on January 25th. Check out the trailer and synopsis below....

Warning: This movie is not for the weak-stomached, faint of heart, or easily offended.
In Movie 43, comedy is served steaming hot by director Peter Farrelly of The Farrelly Brothers (Something About Mary, Dumb & Dumber) in one of the most original comedies ever made. Starring Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Halle Berry, Leslie Bibb, Kate Bosworth, Gerard Butler, Bobby Cannavale, Kieran Culkin, Josh Duhamel, Anna Faris, Richard Gere, John Hodgman, Terrence Howard,  Hugh Jackman, Johnny Knoxville, Justin Long, Stephen Merchant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, ChloĆ« Grace Moretz, Chris Pratt, Liev Schreiber, Seann William Scott, Emma Stone, Jason Sudeikis, Uma Thurman, Naomi Watts, and Kate Winslet, Movie 43 is jaw-dropping, uproarious, outrageous fun.

Sure Shots: Gwyneth Paltrow; Kristen Bell; Marton Csokas

* Between Julia and Julia, Eat Pray Love, and now this, somebody has figured out that women like movies about food. Gwyneth Paltrow is set to star in Blood, Bones, & Butter, based on Gabrielle Hamilton's foodie memoir following her unconventional journey to becoming the owner of acclaimed New York restaurant, 'Prune'. We've been seeing Paltrow mostly in Iron Man movies for the last few years, so it's good to see her taking on something where she can truly stand out, and considering she's a cook book author and friends with chef Mario Batali, this seems like a perfect fit. [THR]

* Kristen Bell is set to star in the indie drama, The Lifeguard, in which she plays a New York reporter who, upon hitting the age of 30, leaves her life behind and moves back to her suburban hometown. Reclaiming her old high school job as a local lifeguard, she enters into a misguided relationship with a 16-year old. I like the sound of this only because we haven't seen Bell do much that required her to do more than be hot and funny. Let's see what else she's got. Liz W. Garcia wrote the script and will direct. Martin Starr, Alex Shaffer, Amy Madigan, and Mamie Gummer co-star. [Deadline]

* We've seen the set photos of the massive Ark being built for Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic, Noah, but the cast he's putting together is pretty darn big, as well. With Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson and more set to star, the latest addition is Marton Csokas(The Debt) in a supporting role. Noah hits theaters on March 28th 2014.

John Favreau & Vince Vaughn Reunite for a little 'Couples Retreat'!

There was a time when the idea of Vince Vaughn and John Favreau teaming up on screen was enough to get me super hyped. But that was 1996 some time after Swingers. Then Made was a complete flop. And then there was The Break Up, and y'know the luster kinda faded. But Couples Retreat actually has me pretty amped up. I dig Favreau as a writer more than a director, and this time around he's passing the reigns over to Peter Bilingsley. Yes, that Peter Billingsley. A Christmas Story Peter Billingsley. Red Rider BB Gun Peter Billingsley. He's actually become quite the successful producer but this is his first crack at a big time directing gig. Just check out the talent he's gathered up for this thing.

Vaughn
Favreau
Kristen Bell
Kristin Davis
Malin Ackerman
Jean Reno
Faizon Love
Jason Bateman
Ken Jeong

Pretty vicious, right? The trailer looks pretty good, and while not hysterically funny I see tons of potential in it. Check it out and let me know what you all think.

Couples Retreat is set to be released on October 9th, 2009.
