Review: Disney's 'Big Hero 6'

It's been said many times, and even mocked by Saturday Night Live, that Marvel can basically turn anything into a box office smash. The top-grossing movie of the year is Guardians of the Galaxy, for chrissakes, based on a comic book practically nobody read and less had heard of.  When Marvel and Disney essentially merged, it brought on a new challenge in territory that had yet to be conquered: animation. Big Hero 6 is the first Disney animated feature based on a Marvel property, and it's both the strangest choice and the perfect one. Blending super-powered heroics with kid-friendly action and an ethnically-diverse cast, Big Hero 6 has something for everybody to love.

Big Hero 6 is based on a super obscure manga-influenced miniseries from years ago; so obscure it makes the Guardians of the Galaxy look like the X-men. While Disney has made some significant changes in the transition to the screen, honoring its Japanese roots certainly hasn't been lost. Shedding the typical Disney homogenization and honoring a merger of many different cultures, it's safe to say this is one of the best looking Disney animated films ever made, certainly unlike anything in their vast catalog of classics. Set in San Fransokyo, a futuristic combination of San Francisco and Tokyo, a gorgeous blend of new and old world charms, the story centers on robotics genius Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) and his equally brainy older brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney). Orphaned at a young age, the two now live with their eager aunt (Maya Rudolph), using their intellect in very different ways. While Tadashi studies at a prestigious university, Hiro builds robots and earns money fighting them in underground tournaments. Sensing his little bro may be on the wrong path, Tadashi brings him to the school where Hiro is blown away by the awesome stuff being built by the other geeks: the spunky racer Go-Go (Jamie Chung) Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr) the laser enthusiast; Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) is a chemistry expert; and Fred (TJ Miller) is basically Shaggy minus his Scooby-Doo companion.

The character that is sure to become a phenomenon in his own right is the lovable, cherubic Baymax (Scott Adsit). Basically a giant stuffed balloon robot, Baymax is pretty much impossible to resist. Designed by Tadashi as a nurse robot, Baymax is clumsy, lumbering, and helpful to a fault. When tragedy strikes the university and Tadashi is killed, he becomes an outlet for Hiro's grief and a willing companion. Somebody out there caused the explosion that got Tadashi killed, it’s up to Hiro, Baymax, and his newly souped-up nerd pals to uncover the truth.  Basically, Big Hero 6 is a classic superhero origin story, one alive with energy, humor, and even a few dark turns. It actually works best as Hiro and his pals are hanging out, joking, and using their intellect to design their wondrous powers, and it's so much fun that we almost forget there's a bad guy out there to be caught.

While there are plenty of laughs to be found, mostly through the constantly-bumbling Baymax, there's also a serious journey of self-discovery that Hiro must endure. Learning to cope with loss, making new friends, and using his genius for good are all lessons Hiro must learn, but there are plenty more that the story merely touches upon. In fact there are too many messages the screenplay wants to get across, throwing them at us a mile a minute. It's a distraction from what we truly want to see more of and that's the relationship between Hiro and Baymax. Threatening for a while to become a pet/master situation, Baymax's ever-present connection to Tadashi becomes an emotional touchstone, one that never fades away through the robot's silly antics. As a healing robot it's his programming to help Hiro through his brother's death, but in a way he becomes a surrogate sibling. Its touching stuff, some of the most emotional Disney has ever dared in a film geared at young audiences. I dare you not to shed a tear when Baymax asks if Hiro is satisfied with his care.

Directed by Don Hall, who gave us the excellent Winnie the Pooh a couple of years ago, and Chris Williams (Bolt), Big Hero 6 looks amazing. A merging of Eastern and Western influences, San Fransokyo is both fascinating and a little bit scary, with new wondrous discoveries to be made around every corner. When Baymax gets his new winged battle armor, he and Hiro embark on a soaring test flight that actually surpasses anything we saw in How to Train Your Dragon. Unfortunately, his new armor also signals a turn away from the character work that was so enjoyable and an emphasis on standard superhero action. There's nothing technically wrong with any of it, but nor is it especially inspired. We just really want to watch Baymax try to squeeze his fat body in and out of tight spaces, or patch up holes with duct tape, or learn how to fist bump. Can we get more of that please? No seriously, can we get more of Big Hero 6? There's so much to adore here that a sequel is an absolute must.  It's another big victory for Disney and Marvel, and to think this is just scratching the surface of their potential. Yes, Big Hero 6, I am more than satisfied with my care.

 Rating: 4 out of 5

Check Out Baymax's Tragic Origin in New Trailer for Disney's 'Big Hero 6'

Disney is going to be pulling at your heartstrings later this year with Big Hero 6, the animated film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team. Most of the trailers we've seen for it up to this point have focuses on the mix of action and comedy, highlighting the bond between between boy genius Hiro Hamada and his inflatable robot pal, Baymax. But now we get a look at why Hiro feels such a connection with Baymax and it may have you shedding a few tears.

Presented as a team of nerds, Big Hero 6 consists of Hiro, Baymax, Honey Lemon, Fred, Wasabi, and Gogo Tomago who come together to defend the futuristic city of San Fransokyo from a kabuki-masked villain. It's our first real look at the entire team in action, but the focus is squarely on the clumsy Baymax who Disney clearly see big merchandising dollars in. The Baymax action figures were flying off the shelves at Comic-Con earlier this year.

Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell, Damon Wayans Jr., Jamie Chung, Alan Tudyk, T.J. Miller, Maya Rudolph, Ryan Potter, and Scott Adsit lend their voices to Big Hero 6, which opens on November 7th.

First TV Spot, New Trailer, and Full Voice Cast for Disney's 'Big Hero 6'

Although we've seen trailers and promos for Disney's animated Marvel Comics film, Big Hero 6, very little of the characters' voices have been heard. The only confirmed voice casting up until now had been TJ Miller (currently seen in Transformers: Age of Extinction), Maya Rudolph, and Jamie Chung (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), but now we have the full rundown along with a new trailer and TV spot for the superhero 'toon.

Teenaged martial artist Ryan Potter of Nickelodeon's Supah Ninjas will voice robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada; his robotic pal Baymax will be played by 30 Rock's Scott Adsit; Damon Wayans Jr. (New Girl) voices Wasabi No-Ginger; and Genesis Rodriguez (Casa De Mi Padre) is Honey Lemon. Miller is voicing Fred aka Fredzilla, Chung is Go Go Tomago, while Rudolph is Aunt Cass. Also coming aboard are James Cromwell, Firefly's Alan Tudyk, and Daniel Henney (Shanghai Calling)  in supporting roles.

Big Hero 6 opens November 7th. Check out the new TV spot, a Baymax promo, and some new images below.

Maya Rudolph Enters 'The Nest'; Isla Fisher and Rebel Wilson Join 'Grimsby'

* It's a total SNL reunion in the upcoming comedy The Nest as Maya Rudolph has joined stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), the Fey and Poehler play two 30-something sisters who decide to throw one final bash at their childhood home upon learning it's been put up for sale. James Brolin is set to play the father, while Neighbors scene-stealer Ike Barinholz will take the male lead with Rudolph as a childhood friend. Rudolph will film The Nest before moving on to join The Greens Are Gone, an indie drama directed by Peer Pederson and starring Catherine Keener. [THR]

* Sacha Baron Cohen has rounded up a pair of funny ladies of his own for Grimsby, the spy spoof he'll be starring in alongside Mark Strong. Rebel Wilson and Cohen's wife Isla Fisher have joined the film which has Strong as an elite spy forced to team up with his football hooligan brother, played by Cohen of course. Ian McShane, Johnny Vegas, Gabourey Sidibe, and Annabelle Wallis co-star with Phil Johnston (Wreck-It Ralph), Peter Baynham (Borat), and Cohen having provided the screenplay. This will be the first time Cohen and Fisher have teamed up on a project and hopefully it works out well enough that it won't be the last.

Maya Rudolph Joins 'Big Hero 6'; Sandra Bullock Eyes 'Tupperware Unsealed'; 'Max Steel' Adds Andy Garcia

* With Disney Animation's Marvel film Big Hero 6 coming this November, the voice cast is starting to round into shape. Joining TJ Miller and the newly-announced Jamie Chung is Maya Rudolph in an undisclosed role. The film is based on the Marvel comic that follows a young genius named Hiro, who along with giant robot Baymax defends the citizens of San Fransokyo alongside an oddball team of heroes. Rudolph has previously voiced characters in Shrek the Third, Turbo, and The Nut Job. [TheWrap]

* Sandra Bullock may be about to throw a Tupperware party. She's circling the lead role in Tupperware Unsealed, in which she would play trailblazing sales exec Brownie Wise, credited with coming up with the idea for Tupperware parties that swept the nation in the 1950s. She soon became as popular and successful as the product itself, becoming the first woman to appear on the cover of Business Week. This also put her into conflict with Tupperware creator, Earl Silas Tupper, who forced her out of the company. Tate Taylor (The Help) is writing and directing based on the book by Bob Kealing. [THR]

* Andy Garcia is the latest, and biggest, name to join Max Steel, the latest Mattel toy to be turned into a potential film franchise. Ben Winchell stars as teenaged Max McGrath who combines with his alien friend Steel to become the heroic Max Steel. Garcia will play a mysterious scientist in what is said to be a pivotal role. Ana Villafañe co-stars as Max's love interest, Sofia Martinez. At the helm is Stewart Hendler with a script by Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World).

Animal Party: Trailers for Animated 'Free Birds' and 'The Nut Job'

Other than Disney's Frozen, it's going to be slim pickings on the animated comedy front for awhile. Especially for parents who may be looking for a film they can endure with the kids, the offerings are few and look pretty juvenile, albeit with big name voice casts who would be pretty awesome in a genuine movie. But for those who know they're going to get dragged to see these anyway, here are the trailers for Free Birds and The Nut Job.

First up is Free Birds, which features the voices of Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson as turkeys and members of the Turkey Freedom Front (!!!) who travel back in time to try and get the delicious bird off the Thanksgiving menu. Ummmm, so what happens if they succeed? Thanksgiving can not exist on ham alone. So what are we looking at here? Some sort of alternate history like Inglourious Basterds or something? Eh. Free Birds opens on November 27th, 24 hours before most of us will be indulging in turkey then heading off to do some holiday shopping.

And then there's The Nut Job, which features the voices of Liam Neeson, Maya Rudolph, Katherine Heigl, Will Arnett, and Jeff Dunham. Directed by Peter Lepeniotis and based on his short film, the 1950s-set comedy follows a squirrel and rat who team up for a nut store heist that goes "comically" wrong. This looks dreadful all around with lame shoehorned pop culture references, fart jokes, and why are they doing the 'Harlem Shake'? The Nut Job opens on January 17th, and thank goodness I'll be at Sundance and far away from it. +Julian Lytle this one's for you!

Maya Rudolph joins 'Inherent Vice' as first set photos emerge

Filming is now taking place on Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Inherent Vice, and considering the star-studded cast it was only a mater of time before set photos began to hit the web. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Kevin J. O'Connor, Josh Brolin, and Katherine Waterston, but with Thomas Pynchon's novel sporting more than two dozen crazy characters, more celebs could come aboard at any time. In fact, the first set photos not only give us a first look at Phoenix a weed-smoking detective Doc Sportello, but they also reveal Anderson's longtime partner Maya Rudolph has joined the cast.

The photos come courtesy of The Daily Mail, capturing Phoenix as the drug-addled Los Angeles gumshoe, who runs into all sorts of obstacles while investigating an ex-girlfriend's kidnapping. A very pregnant Rudolph (she and Anderson are expecting their fourth child) is set to take on the small role of nurse Petunia Leeway, who works at a vitamin shop where the resident pharmacist dispenses "B-12" shots like in the recent episode of Mad Men titled "The Crash".

Inherent Vice hits theaters in 2014.

Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet, and Rob Corddry join 'The Way, Way Back'

So how much better could things get for Jim Rash and Nat Faxon? The duo already took home an Oscar for adapting The Descendants to universal acclaim, so that now any project they want to get done is going to attract the hottest stars. They've already got an action comedy lined up with Kristen Wiig, and they've been pulling together a remarkable cast for their directorial debut, The Way, Way Back.

With Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell and young Liam James headlining, the final touches have now been put on the cast. Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry, and Amanda Peet are the latest to join the coming of age dramedy, which tells the story of a boy who starts a friendship over the course of one summer that gives him the strength to stand up to his boozing, abusive stepfather. Carell will break from the norm as the stepfather, with Collete playing James' mother, and Rockwell as the water park manager he forms the bond with.

AnnaSophia Robb(Soul Surfer) and Allison Janney(Drop Dead Gorgeous) make up the rest of the versatile cast. Filming is set to begin next week in Massachusetts. [Deadline]

Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Giamatti, Maya Rudolph join 'Turbo' voice cast

Dreamworks can never quite seem to get the edge on Pixar in the ongoing war for animation domination. They gained some significant ground with How to Train Your Dragon in 2010, and last year Pixar helped out by only releasing the lackluster Cars 2. This year sees Dreamworks slipping behind yet again, as their two offerings, Madagascar 3 and Rise of the Guardians, haven't caught the attention of moviegoers in the way Pixar's Brave has.

Already looking ahead to 2013, Dreamworks has assembled an impressive voice cast for Turbo, the story of a garden snail with dreams of racing in the Indianapolis 500, embued with super speed after a freak accident. Ryan Reynolds is set to voice the lead, now being joined by Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, and Snoop Dogg.

This doesn't sound like anything I'd be interested normally, but with Robert Siegel(The Wrestler, Big Fan) co-writing the script, chances are Turbo will be far better than it appears on paper. Turbo is set to race into theaters on July 19th 2013. [THR]

Trailer Time: Bridesmaids, starring Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne

So apparently everybody LOVED Bridesmaids at SXSW. The Twitter-verse absolutely lit up with rave reviews for the raunchy comedy from Freaks and Geeks creator, Paul Feig. Kristen Wiig(Paul, Adventureland) stars as woman trying to make it through a wild ride as her best friend's Maid of Honor.  Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy(love her!!), Jon Hamm, and Ellie Kemper co-star.  I wasn't exactly blown away by the first trailer, which I think tried too hard to prove it wasn't the female version of The Hangover. This one's better. Dirtier, filthier, and a hell of a lot funnier. I'm starting to warm up to it now.  Check out the trailer below, then mark your calandar for the release of Bridesmaids on May 13th!
