So much for Olivier Assayas' 'Idol's Eye' with Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro

While it's easy to find money for movies based on comics or '80s toys, directors who tend to make smaller projects are still having trouble. That even goes for Olivier Assayas, who had amassed a terrific cast for Idol's Eye, which would have starred Robert Pattinson, Robert De Niro, and Rachel Weisz. Unfortunately, even with that group of A-listers it was still too difficult for Benaroya Pictures to secure financing and the film has been cancelled. Here's their statement:

Due to the criteria for financing not being met by producers, Benaroya Pictures has formally decided to discontinue financing the motion picture titled IDOL’S EYE. The company cannot continue to put its investment at risk and has been forced to stop cash flowing the production. This is something all of us wanted to avoid, but due to the producers missing a number of financing criteria deadlines that were mutually established by all parties, we were left with no other options. Benaroya Pictures plans to retain the rights of the film and move forward with production on the picture after we generate a revised script and assemble a new filmmaking team.

So there's still some hope that the heist film, based on the true story of average criminals who accidentally rob a mob-owned porn store, will securing financing and move forward some time in the future. It's especially disappointing given how successful Pattinson's Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart was in Assayas' last film, Clouds of Sils Maria.  [Deadline]

New Trailer for David Cronenberg's 'Maps to the Stars' Goes a Little Crazy

Julianne Moore won Best Actress at Cannes for her performance in David Cronenberg's Hollywood drama Maps to the Stars, and the film has received strong reviews elsewhere, as well. So does that mean we'll be seeing it in time for the Oscars? Uh, no. The distributor eOne gave the U.S. rights over to Focus World who are considering a digital-only release some time in 2015, putting it effectively out of the awards race. Oh well. The film still looks like a terrific slicing up of celebrity culture, with Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Sarah Gadon, and Olivia Williams joining Moore in giving top notch performances. And considering what Cusack has been doing lately that's a pretty big deal.  Here's the synopsis followed by a brand new trailer ahead of its release in Canada on October 31st.

With this tale of a secret-filled Hollywood family on the verge of implosion, award-winning director David Cronenberg forges both a wicked social satire and a very human ghost story from our celebrity-obsessed culture. From a screenplay by acclaimed author, screenwriter and West Coast chronicler Bruce Wagner, and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams and Sarah Gadon, MAPS TO THE STARS tours the seductive allure and the tender, darkly comic underbelly of contemporary success.

New Trailer for David Cronenberg's 'Maps to the Stars' with Robert Pattinson

Considering how far away the Twilight cast have tried to get from the spotlight one could be led to believe they didn't enjoy the experience. In the case of Robert Pattinson he has been taking on roles in movies that seem specifically designed to keep his fanbase away, and he's done a pretty good job because few turned out to see stuff like Bel Ami, The Rover, and Cosmopolis. But that hasn't stopped auteurs from reaching out to him, and his latest film Maps to the Stars is a reunion with his Cosmopolis director, David Cronenberg.

A new trailer for Maps to the Stars has been released and it's easy to see why this was such a favorite at Cannes earlier this year. Pattinson stars alongside Julianne Moore (honored at Cannes with Best Actress), Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, and Sarah Gadon, in a send-up of Hollywood and celebrity culture in general. Here's the official synopsis:

The Weiss family is the archetypical Hollywood dynasty: father Sanford is an analyst and coach, who has made a fortune with his self-help manuals; mother Christina mostly looks after the career of their son Benjie, 13, a child star.

One of Sanford’s clients, Havana, is an actress who dreams of shooting a remake of the movie that made her mother, Clarice, a star in the ’60s. Clarice is dead now and visions of her come to haunt Havana at night. Adding to the toxic mix, Benjie has just come off a rehab program he joined when he was 9 and his sister, Agatha, has recently been released from a sanatorium where she was treated for criminal pyromania…

Maps to the Stars has yet to gain a domestic date but opens in the UK on September 26th.

Review: 'The Rover' Starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson

There have been so many dark, dirty post-apocalyptic thrillers lately it's become hard to tell them all apart. Cue dusty, sun-scorched locale, abandoned cars by the side of the road, guys in shaggy beards and dirty tank tops. And violence. Lots of bloody, ugly violence almost too brutal to fathom. Clichés are a fact of life in Hollywood but one would expect David Michod, the director the supremely confident Aussie gangster flick Animal Kingdom, to provide a little something off the beaten path for his follow-up, The Rover. And while he pulls one haunting performance from a familiar face and a solid turn from an unexpected one, the film offers little to separate it from the likes of Mad Max, The Road, or numerous others mining the same ground.

Movies set in a future resembling a burned out husk have long been the bastion of indie filmmakers looking to skirt around budgetary issues, and if "burned out husk" is what one is looking for then the south Australian outback requires the minimum of alteration. In short, it's a desolate place, perfect for a story of men frayed at the edges, ruined by a society that crumbled a decade prior. There are still laws, albeit nobody to really enforce them. Money is practically worthless, food at a premium and petrol even more so. Mercenaries stalk the streets, crucified men litter the highways, and basically every encounter could be your last. Familiar or not, Michod paints a terrifying picture of a hopeless world.

Guy Pearce, hiding behind a thick beard and far-away eyes, is Eric, a man without a past, certainly without much of a future, and only one possession and that's his car. After stopping by a nearby "bar" for a drink, his car is stolen by three shady types (one is played by Scoot McNairy) clearly on the getaway from something. Eric stalks them down in another vehicle, only to have them get the upper hand and flee, once again in his car. The rest of the film is about this mysterious man's tunnel vision in getting the car back and gaining some measure of revenge on those who took it.

First he encounters the simple-minded Rey (Pattinson), who was shot and left for dead by his brother, one of the guys Eric is seeking out. The film relies heavily on the bonding between these two, which has moments of gallows enlightenment as they kill their way to where Eric's car is stashed. “You should never stop thinking about a life you’ve taken. That’s the price you pay for taking it", Eric says during one of their many roadside conversations. Eric doesn't speak much, hardly at all really, but when he does it's to say things like this. And they would have considerably more meaning if Michod, who co-wrote the script with Joel Edgerton, had a clearer definition for the character. Bodies pile up, mostly for no good reason and largely at Eric's hand, and he doesn't seem the least bit concerned about them. In one memorable moment, he buys a pistol from a little person only to shoot him with it immediately after, basically out of annoyance. At some point the bleak locale has become an excuse to portray excessive levels of violence without having to be concerned about why there is so much bloodshed. Michod offers no real reason for anything, and it's too much to say the film is about nothingness. That's not true. The utterly pretentious "twist" ending tells us Michod wants it to be about something, he just never gets around to letting us in on what it is. A small hint of sentimentality emerges through the harshness and it feels utterly misplaced and unearned. Like Animal Kingdom, Michod specializes in establishing mood, especially the desolation that follows bad people who live a life of doing terrible things.

Pearce should be getting more leading roles but he seems to favor show-stopping supporting turns at this point. In a rare starring turn he's especially gruff and haunted. It's not a part that requires much from him yet he delivers what's expected and more. The more interesting performance is by Pattinson who has basically jettisoned Hollywood limelight behind to flex his dramatic muscles with indie directors. So far it hasn't really worked out, and it doesn't really work out here either. With his teeth a mangled mess and his nerves all jittery, Pattinson's portrayal of Rey is too practiced, too aware. What's impressive is Pattinson's dedication to the role and willingness to branch out into something like this in the first place.

Animal Kingdom was a confident debut that promised Michod as a bright new filmmaking voice. Too much of that voice has been silenced with The Rover but he should have no problem regaining it next time.

Robert Pattinson Denies He's Replacing Harrison Ford in Everything

Save the "frail old man" jokes in regards to Harrison Ford's injury on the Star Wars: Episode VII set, he'll recover in time to finish up playing Han Solo, possibly for the last time. Although there's probably a good joke in there somewhere about him getting injured now when he skated through The Expendables 3 with no problem. Anyway, an unintended consequence of the injury is stirring up recent rumors Ford, who is now 71 years old, could be replaced by Robert Pattinson as Indiana Jones or Han Solo in a Star Wars spinoff.

Just how credible those rumors ever were is up for debate but that didn't stop Pattinson from getting asked about them by People while discussing his new film, The Rover. And as expected Pattinson not only denied the rumors, he sounds as if he's never heard of them. When asked about Indy, he said...

Pattinson: "I don't know why. Why is that coming out? I honestly don't understand what it's all about. Man, i wish."

And it was much the same when questioned about Star Wars...

Pattinson: "I didn't even know there was a Han Solo spinoff coming out. Sounds like a cool spinoff. I'll watch it."

What? You mean R-Patz isn't obsessed with every bit of Star Wars news like the rest of us? Now that I truly find hard to believe.  Pattinson has been steering clear of franchises ever since the Twilight nightmare ended, so it never really seemed likely he'd want to be part of the Disney machine. After press on The Rover is done he'll jump into Olivier Assayas' gangster film, Idol's Eye, which shoots this November.

Unlikely Rumor Has Robert Pattinson as Next Indiana Jones and in 'Star Wars'

This is a day of scurrilous rumors, apparently. So the Emily Blunt in 'Dawn of Justice' thing is almost certainly untrue, but it pales in comparison to the hokum that is The Daily Star's latest report. In it, the rag site claims Robert Pattinson, who has spent the last few months working with every auteur he can find, tops a shortlist to be the next Indiana Jones. Not only that, but he's "committed" to be in the new Star Wars movies.

At least the site gives us some quotes to chew on, although they sound like they rolled off the "Hollywoodspeak 2000"conveyor belt.

“They feel that the series has huge potential on many levels, starting with the films leading to other spin-offs like games which can generate more money than movies.

“Rob is top of the initial list because he has showed his acting stripes away from Twilight."

That last point is extremely debatable, and....well, yeah, Disney might want to do some Indiana Jones spinoffs or something. Nothing novel there. The story also notes that Harrison Ford is "wrinkly" and too old to play Indiana Jones anymore.

But if we're going to treat this with any level of seriousness, then let's not forget that Pattinson hated that whole Twilight experience and the chances of him doing another huge franchise, let alone two, is extremely slim and slim just went out to lunch.

Robert De Niro Joins Robert Pattinson for 'Idol's Eye'

Conservatively speaking, Robert De Niro is probably good for one decent film for every three or four terrible ones. For every Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle there's The Bag Man, Last Vegas, The Family, or (*shudders*) Killing Season, so maybe he's due for another hit?

De Niro will join Robert Pattinon in Idol's Eye, a "sophisticated" thriller directed by Olivier Assayas, who is coming off the Cannes premiere of his most recent film, Clouds of Sils Maria. The story is based on the real life events surrounding a gang of normal criminals who accidentally steal from a mob boss. And if we know anything about mob bosses it's that they aren't the most forgiving people in the world.

No word on the roles either actor will take but it would be odd if De Niro is anybody other than the mobster. Filming is set to begin in October.

Robert Pattinson to Star in Olivier Assayas' 'Idol's Eye'

Two guys who are having a very busy Cannes are Robert Pattinson and Olivier Assayas. Pattinson, whose got a jammed up slate for 2014, hit the festival with David Michod's The Rover and David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars. Assayas is there in-competition with his film, Clouds of Sils Maria starring Pattinson's ex-gal, Kristen Stewart. And once all of that is over, Pattinson and Assayas are going to put their heads together for a film shooting this fall.

Pattinson confirmed to La Nouvel Observateur that he will star in Assayas' next film, revealed by Le Monde to be titled Idol's Eye. It's a film the director has been talking about for a spell (under a different title), and follows a bunch of criminals who accidentally rob a mob boss. The story was chronicled in Hillel Levin's 2007 Playboy article, Boosting the Big Tuna.

Pattinson says production begins in November so we should start seeing more details soon.

First Trailer and Poster for 'The Rover' Starring Pattinson and Guy Pearce

If the poster's tagline "Fear the Man with Nothing to Lose" doesn't tell you The Rover is going to deal with men pushed to the bring, then perhaps the moody, searing first trailer will. Directed by David Michod, from a story he cooked up with his Animal Kingdom star, Joel Edgerton, the film stars Robert Pattinson as as a man carjacked and left for dead, losing something valuable in the process. Guy Pearce plays a dangerous drifter who helps him recover what was lost in a lawless, post-apocalyptic world that looks like something out of The Road.

The Rover will hit Cannes before opening in theaters June 13th, expanding nationwide a week later.

*UPDATE* Two Trailers for David Cronenberg's 'Maps to the Stars'

*UPDATE* A second, NSFW trailer has been added that I think is far more coherent than the one from last night. It's also much sexier and more chatty, resembling Cosmopolis in that way.*

David Cronenberg may be the master of the body horror, but of late he's been slicing up the psychology of people in A Dangerous Method and Cosmopolis. For his next film, Maps to the Stars, Cronenberg takes on perhaps his nastiest subject yet, exploring the corrupt and twisted psyche of Hollywood royalty.

Starring his newfound muse, Robert Pattinson, along with Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Olivia Williams, and Sarah Gadon, the film follows the Weiss family, who all come with their share of unique personal demons. The father is a writer of self-help manuals, the mother steers the career of their 13-year-old son, while the other kids are getting out of rehab programs. And then there's Havana, who hopes to be an actress and star in a remake of the film that made her deceased mother famous.

It's hard to tell what's going on here but this is Cronenberg and no trailer is going to fully encapsulate what he's trying to get across.

First Look at Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan in James Dean Biopic, 'Life'

Anton Corbijn has only helmed two feature films, Joy Division biopic Control and the Euro-style hit man drama, The American; and both were defined by Sam Riley and George Clooney's leading male performances. Corbijn was at Sundance for John Le Carre adaptation A Most Wanted Man, which features one of the final completed works by Philip Seymour Hoffman (review here), but before that film comes out he's already hard at work on his next project. Corbijn has begun shooting on Life, a James Dean biopic starring Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan, and the first image has just arrived.

Pattinson stars as Dean, with DeHaan as Magnum photographer Dennis Stock, and the story chronicles the friendship they developed in 1955 while on a cross-country photo shoot for Life Magazine. Stock would take some of the most famous images of Dean, helping to build the young actor into Hollywood royalty. Corbijn spoke to EW about the process of working with DeHaan and Pattinson on this project...

Corbijn: "When I see Rob I see an inner turmoil that is great for the role. And Dane is really interesting. He has a beautiful face, but it's a face to grasp. It's hard to see how Dane reads [onscreen] sometimes, and the same goes for James Dean."

Corbijn's ability to get the best from his actors means we could be looking at something great from DeHaan and Pattinson. Still too early for a release date but maybe we'll see it by the end of the year or early next.

Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce in First Teaser for 'The Rover'

David Michod's searing, unsettling crime drama Animal Kingdom not only put him on the map, it put a spotlight on the entire Australian movie scene. In the process it introduced us to actors like Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jacki Weaver, while reconfirming just how amazing Guy Pearce can be at anything he sets a mind to. It's been four years since that film and now Michod is finally back another thriller, The Rover, and it looks mighty impressive.

Starring Pearce and Robert Pattinson, the post-apocalyptic flick takes place in the harsh Australian outback and centers on a man who must make his way across the desert to retrieve his stolen car and secure the mysterious cargo inside. Bleak, ominous, and obviously very violent, there's clearly a lot more going on than is suggested by the plot or is this footage. Good; hopefully the mystery can remain hidden until the film opens later this summer.

Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche to Star in Brady Corbet's 'The Childhood of a Leader'

It's perhaps too early to say that Robert Pattinson has successfully moved beyond his Twilight past, but he's sure giving it his best shot. He's already got projects lined up with Werner Herzog and James Grey, and things went so well on Cosmopolis with David Cronenberg that they teamed up again for Maps to the Stars. And now he's adding another interesting film to his schedule, one helmed by fellow thespian Brady Corbet.

Pattinson will reteam with Cosmopolis co-star Juliette Binoche and Tim Roth for The Childhood of a Leader. Corbet, star of Funny Games, Melancholia, and recently Simon Killer, will make his directorial debut, co-writing the film with Mona Fastvold (The Sleepwalker). As the title suggests, the story centers on the childhood of a post-WWI leader, only Variety doesn't reveal who it is. Is it being kept a secret for a reason? It's possible that the story hinges on the identity of this leader remaining a mystery.

Hopefully we'll get some additional info soon. Filming is has been planned for next May.

Robert Pattinson Joins Benedict Cumberbatch in 'The Lost City of Z'

The American Film Market is in full swing and that means a good number of movies are out looking to secure enough financing to move forward. One of the bigger projects being shopped around is James Gray's adaptation of The Lost City of Z, which made itself easily bankable by adding Benedict Cumberbatch a few weeks ago, and now another A-lister has come aboard who should help make the decision to invest all the easier.

Screen Daily reports that Robert Pattinson has joined the Brad Pitt-produced film, which is based on David Grann's bestselling book on British explorer Percy Fawcett. Fawcett, who presumably will be played by Cumberbatch, was a former soldier who became obsessed with the Amazon and the idea of a lost civilization. His numerous expeditions led to many near-death experiences, until he and his son vanished and were never heard from again in their final self-funded adventure.

It's unclear what role Pattinson will play, but this marks another impressive notch on his belt. He's still set to star as T.E. Lawrence in Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert, and will be seen next year in David Michod's The Rover.

Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson Join James Dean Biopic 'Life'

Few actors carry quite the mystique of James Dean, a celebrity heartthrob who became singularly defined by his most famous film, Rebel Without a Cause. He lived fast and died young, and perhaps that's the reason why Hollywood remains so obsessed with him. A couple of months ago we learned that Anton Corbijn (The American) was planning to direct Life, a Dean biopic that centered on the early part of his career, and now it's starting to come together with two big time stars coming aboard.

The latest deal to emerge out of Toronto has Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson joining the film which focuses on "the true story about the friendship between James Dean and Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock." In what will probably come as a surprise to R-Patz fans, he'll be taking on the role of Stock while it will be DeHaan as Dean. The story penned by Luke Davies centers on Stock, who was commissioned by Life magazine to travel the country taking photos of the rising star. He would go on to take some of the most iconic images of Dean as the two became closer professional and personally.

Filming is set to begin early next year. Before then you can catch DeHaan as writer Lucien Carr in Kill Your Darlings, and before he plays Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 he can be seen in The Devil's Knot by director Atom Egoyan. Pattinson has a numberof interesting projects on the way, including David Michod's The Rover and David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars. [THR]

Julianne Moore, John Cusack, and Sarah Gadon join David Cronenberg's 'Maps to the Stars'

David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars has been developing for quite some time, and despite landing Robert Pattinson as the lead it was beginning to look like the film might get pushed back or not happen at all. Rachel Weisz came aboard last fall, but dropped out last month. At the same time, Cronenberg seems to have failed in his attempts to lure in frequent collaborator Viggo Mortensen. The director recently took an acting role in Luca Guadagnino's Body Art, further muddying up the waters.

But the film is indeed happening, and looks to be progressing at a rapid clip with the addition of Julianne Moore, John Cusack, and Cosmopolis co-star Sarah Gadon. Bruce Wagner wrote the script, which is a ghost story dealing in some way with Hollywood's celebrity culture. Further plot details are being kept under wraps, and along with it any info on the characters.

Production is set to begin in July. [THR]

Robert Pattinson threatened by Guy Pearce in first look at 'The Rover'

First announced last May with the signing of Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce, word has been extremely quiet on The Rover ever since. Directed by David Michod, who shot to fame with the Aussie crime thriller Animal Kingdom, the film is now in front of cameras and we're getting our first look at it.

EW has dropped the new image from the futuristic western, and it looks like Pattinson's in a little bit of trouble. Set in the Australian outback against the backdrop of an economic collapse, the film has Pearce as a man who finds his car and his invaluable possessions stolen by a gang. Pattinson plays a naive, injured member of the gang who the man forces to help him. It sounds a little bit like Mad Max, and Michod has even noted the similarity himself while making quite the boast about his film...

Michod: “You put cars in the desert in Australia and people are going to think of 'Mad Max. And with all due respect to that film — and I stress that — I think 'The Rover' is going to be way more chillingly authentic and menacing.”

Rachel Weisz joins Robert Pattinson and Viggo Mortensen in David Cronenberg's 'Maps to the Stars'

David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis turned out to be quite the head-scratcher, and I'm not sure even his fans were able to get behind it. It looked for awhile like there would be something of a return to normalcy with the developing Eastern Promises sequel, but that flamed out. Fortunately one of Cronenberg's long-developing projects appears to be picking up steam.

Rachel Weisz is the latest to join Maps to the Stars, an industry satire penned by Brad Wagner that has been described as "very acerbic" and follows agents, actors, and managers with an emphasis on two children ruined by Hollywood depravity. In the works since around 2006, the film gained momentum earlier this year when Robert Pattinson came aboard, and Viggo Mortensen has now been confirmed as well. Pattinson, Mortensen, Weisz, and Cronenberg? Yeah, I'll take that.

I didn't enjoy Cosmopolis one bit, and Pattinson was awful in it, but maybe the second time will be the charm? Surely something will rub off on him working alongside Mortensen and Weisz. Filming is set to begin in May. [Allocine via ThePlaylist]

Robert Pattinson joins Carey Mulligan in 'Hold On To Me'

I'm convinced that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's supposed reconciliation is little more than a publicity scheme, designed to make the Twilight fans feel nice and cozy before Breaking Dawn pt. 2 opens next month. Maybe I'm just being cynical, but that's what it seems like. Anyway, you have to give credit to both of them for establishing their careers outside of that popular franchise. Pattinson in particular has been working with some of the finest directors both in and outside the mainstream, and he's just signed on to work with one who definitely falls into the latter category.

Pattinson has signed on to join Carey Mulligan in Hold On to Me, which we learned about back in August when it was titled Nancy and Danny. Directed by the unpredictable James Marsh(Project NIM, Man on Wire, Shadow Dancer) and written by Brad Inglesby(Out of the Furnace), the film centers on a small town woman whose big city dreams of riches and fame have failed. Desperate to win over her high school crush, she uses a hapless pawn to launch a get rich scheme that doesn't go quite as planned.

So now Pattinson can add Marsh to an impressive list of filmmakers he's worked with or will be soon, including David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, and David Michod. [Deadline]

Relax! Robert Pattinson (probably) won't star in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

Deep breath, Hunger Games fans. Robert Pattinson likely won't be starring as Finnick Odair in the newly titled The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Why is this even a question? Was there some chance that he might? Did the Twi-hards start all this nonsense in order to get their enemies on the other side of the teen-lit fence all hot 'n bothered? The rumor sprang up last week, noting that Lionsgate was interested in R-Pat for the role of Finnick, the dashing and physical former victor who is called back into action as part of the Quarter Quell. It's....in the second book. Just go read it or look it up on Wikipedia.

I kinda noted how this seemed like a silly idea having the milky and unimpressive Pattinson take on a role he seemed totally ill-suited for. Apparently he agreed, because in a recent issue of USA Today he seems to have no interest in the gig at all...

Pattinson: "I woke up this morning and saw all these things about me being cast in The Hunger Games." "I was kind of curious for a second. So I called my agent. My agent was like, 'No,' " Pattinson reports. "(My agent) was like no one's going to offer you that part," Pattinson says, breaking into a laugh. "I was like, thanks for the reassurance."

He doesn't exactly say it'll never happen, only that his agent doesn't think an offer will come his way. Even if it did, it sounds like he would shoot it down. It never really made any sense, considering how hard he's been working to try and distance himself from exactly the sort of movie The Hunger Games is. Assuming the rumor was legit, you can hardly blame Lionsgate for having Pattinson on their list. If the Twilight and The Hunger Games fans were to ever join forces......I shudder to think of the damage they could cause.
