'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' is 2013's Biggest Offender of Movie Product Placement

There are so many awards in Hollywood that it's very easy to lose count of them all. Some of the more fun awards, though, don't have a telecast, and aren't attended by the Hollywood A-list. One of these is brandhannel's annual Brandcameo Product Placement Awards. Brandhannel's creative awards have been around since 2004, and have handed out awards to movies with obvious product placements, even going so far as to separate them into very distinct categories.

The site has been tracking the ad placement in films for over fifteen years, and it's come to their attention that the number of ads in award-winning films has gone down since 2001, with 2013 being the lowest. Which is impressive, considering the assumption that product placement has only gotten worse. Maybe the product placement has just gotten larger in size, just in case you didn't notice it was there (I'm looking at you, Man of Steel!).

The primary offender of 2013 was The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The film had product placement interwoven into its plot, such as Papa John's Pizza, Life magazine, and eHarmony. Other movies that had product placement, but didn't get any awards, were Man of Steel (7-11, IHOP, and Sears's large store sign were particularly annoying), Iron Man 3 (Yili milk and Oracle, anyone?), and, though tobacco ad placements are practically non-existent these, Marlboro still makes an appearance in Sylvester Stalone's Escape Plan.

You can check out the winners of the 2014 Product Placement Awards below! And if you're interested in finding out how brandchannel calculates all of these things and some other fun and interesting tidbits about product placement and movies, head on over to their to find out.

Review: 'Pain & Gain' starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson

When not in the middle of some giant, planet-destroying spectacle of a blockbuster popcorn flick, Michael Bay actually has quite a sense of humor. It's easy to forget because so many years have gone by since he's put it on display, replacing laughs and style with oversized action, bigger explosions, and girls in tiny bikinis. Bay's most successful films that don't involve giant robots or crashing meteors were the Bad Boysfilms, which featured grand comedic strokes and yes, plenty of skyscraper-sized action. Pain & Gain, a ludicrous, caffeinated, overlong, and occasionally very dark crime caper based on an unbelievable true story, is pure unfiltered Bay in terms of its visual cues, but it also shows he can lighten up when need be.

Like Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, Pain & Gain offers a sketchy side of Florida that seems pretty cool from a distance, but gets uglier the closer one gets. Bay kicks things off with the worn out tactic of beginning at the end of the story, showing us exactly how batcrap insane things are going to get, before sliding back to a time before all Hell broke loose. Mark Wahlberg is Daniel Lugo, a dopey con-man and bodybuilder who adores his pecs over all things. He sees his ripped abs as a physical expression of his own hard work and a realization of the American Dream....as filtered through the lens of a guy who idolizes Tony Montana. And like Montana, Daniel wants everything life has to offer. He wants to be rich, famous, and powerful, and if the world isn't going to give it to him, he'll just have to take it.

Daniel's buddy, Adrian Dorbal (Anthony Mackie) also has dreams of something more. The two work together in a swanky gym for muscle-heads, built up from nothing thanks to Daniel's go-getter attitude. A steroid-freak with inferiority issues and an embarrassing case of erectile dysfunction, Adrian is a follower who looks to Daniel as a guiding light. Daniel is essentially Boogie Nights' Dirk Diggler after a few bench presses, and Adrian is his Reed Rothchild.

As a personal trainer to Miami's rich and famous, Daniel sees everything he can't have right in front of his face, and spurred on by the bombastic self-help guru Johnny Wu (Ken Jeong), he decides to do something about it. Gathering Adrian and a massive ex-con turned Jesus freak named Paul Doyle (Dwayne Johnson), Daniel decides to kidnap and extort Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub), a wealthy entrepreneur.

The ugly superficiality of Bay's vision is best exemplified by Victor, an ugly, boasting, demeaning blowhard. A Half-Colombian/Half-Jew (we're constantly reminded of this fact), Victor represents the American Dream at its worst. He's a self-made man who got there on the backs of others, and now that he's at the top makes sure everyone else feels like crap about their own station in life. He's all ego, nastiness, and machismo, who never misses an opportunity to rub his wealth in the face of others. He makes for a wildly unsympathetic victim, captured in clownish fashion by three morons who are just as twisted as he is on the inside. They may be buffoons in every sense of the word, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous.

The actual kidnapping is a thing of absurd beauty as they botch the job in increasingly stupid ways before finally stumbling into success. Of course they didn't bother to plan anything ahead of time so it all spirals south as they struggle briefly to hide their identities while keeping Victor holed up in a sex-toy shop, and Bay makes sure to deliver as many dildo sight gags as one can reasonably expect from him. Flush with all of Victor's cash, the guys indulge in all of the dangerous excesses that made him their target to begin with. Daniel flaunts his sweet new ride with the Scooby-Doo seats, Adrian indulges in his love for overweight women by marrying his sarcastic penis doctor (a great Rebel Wilson), and Paul snorts it all up his nose, basically.

Riotously funny and simply too incredible to be believed, Bay and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (they wrote Captain America: The First Avenger) are constantly forced to remind us that this is indeed based on a true story. Bay employs a number of energetic flourishes to keep the pace moving and to show off the comic lunacy of the unfolding events, and for a while we're given the impression that this will be just some boys-will-be-boys misguided romp. But this story gets extremely dark, and the stylistic excesses that worked to make us laugh have an opposing effect as things start to get pretty violent. Bay does a brilliant job of walking in both worlds, and it's a sign of just how talented a filmmaker he can be when his mind is put to it. Sure, he still presents every theme in broad strokes, and the one thing he doesn't do to excess is subtlety, but his films always evoke an emotional response.

While Pain & Gain marks a return of sorts for Bay, the same goes for Wahlberg who hasn't played a character quite this screwed up since the aforementioned Boogie Nights. His Daniel Lugo is every bit the ambitious, oblivious dufus with mixed-up priorities as Dirk Diggler was, but just the same he's also a guy you wish had his head screwed on straight. Daniel's a likable guy, even when at his worst. It's the kind of role Wahlberg excels at and he does a terrific job here. Some may be surprised by how funny Mackie is, given that he's mostly given male impotence jokes to work with. It's Johnson who really stands out, though, and watching him go from criminal to man of God (complete with his own mini-sex scandal) to a drug-addled rager is perhaps the most entertaining aspect of the film. Johnson, who appears to have put on about 30lbs of muscle for the role, plays off his own inestimable charm in shaping the character, so that he resembles something of a really angry and confused teddy bear with 24-inch biceps.

The film does begin to overstay its welcome, though, and the 130 minute runtime can't support what eventually becomes a one-note story with the sole gag being that these guys are idiots. Once that begins to lose its effectiveness, Bay just assumes that making everything even more outlandish will solve the problem. It doesn't, and eventually the unique personalities that made the film so much fun are just smothered. Ed Harris shows up and channels his Appaloosa persona for awhile as a private investigator hired to find the guys and bring them in, and there are some decent laughs from doe-eyed supermodel Bar Paly as a slutty stripper who becomes a key part of the guys' scheme. She also gets passed around from guy-to-guy like a joint. Hey, this is a Bay film, were you expecting the woman to be treated with respect?

Bay knowingly digs into his familiar bag of tricks, from low-angle 360 shots to guys walking away from explosions...in slow motion, of course. This is Bay relishing in the exuberance of being Bay, but there are more layers and greater depth to the story than in any film of his career. Like a steroid and coke-fueled gym rat, Pain and Gain does eventually crash, so enjoy the powerfully fun high while it lasts.

Rebel Wilson, "Penis Magic", and green spandex in two clips from 'Pain and Gain'

Are we supposed to laugh at the 'roided-up leads of Michael Bay's Pain and Gain, or sympathize with them? The trailers haven't exactly been clear whether Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, and Anthony Mackie are meant to be perceived as anti-heroes in pursuit of their version of the American Dream, or if they're just a bunch of buffoons who got in over their heads. With the film only two short weeks away from hitting theaters, two clips have emerged that play up both aspects.

One of the drawbacks, and in my opinion the biggest drawback, to doing steroids is the dramatic effect it can have on a man's sexual performance. Mackie's character, Adrien Doorbal, has experienced this unfortunate side effect first hand and is now seeking help to fix it. Fortunately, Rebel Wilson is on hand with her special brand of "penis magic" to get him back up and running. The second clip shows just how inept the guys truly are as they make the kidnapping of a wealthy client (Tony Shalhoub) more difficult than it has any right to be.

Pain and Gain will pump you up on April 26th.

The old Michael Bay returns with first trailer for 'Pain and Gain'

This might be hard to remember, but Michael Bay had a pretty successful career before the Transformers, and back then he wasn't making giant robot movies. He was making fast, fun, and quippy action movies with big stars and free of CGI. Bad Boys? Hello? Well now he's tapping back into that long-neglected style once again with Pain and Gain.

The first trailer has finally hit, and it looks like Bad Boys all over again, only with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson running things. They play a pair of not-too-bright bodybuilders who also run a criminal ring specializing in kidnapping and extortion. Robbing and leaving for dead a wealthy businessman, they see their plans go up in smoke when he survives and hires an investigator to track them down. Everybody seems to be in top form here, from Anthony Mackie to Rebel Wilson to Tony Shalhoub, who may have the best line with his thoughts on the invention of salad.

This is a Michael Bay we haven't seen in ages, and boy has he been missed. Pain and Gain opens on April 26th 2013.

Michael Bay's 'Pain and Gain' finally gets a release date

Did you forget all about Michael Bay's small budget crime comedy, Pain and Gain? You can be forgiven for doing so, since nobody's really been talking about it in favor of jumping on every Transformers 4 tidbit(I do it too) or throwing rocks at his Ninja Turtles. Paramount Pictures hasn't forgotten about it, though, and they've finally pegged the film with a release date of April 26th 2013.

Budgeted at about $15-$20M, which wouldn't cover the cost of food for a Transformers shoot, the true crime caper stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as a pair of Florida bodybuilders who engage in murder and kidnapping. They screw up big time when they abduct and leave for dead a rich businessman, who hires his own investigator to track them down. It's a pretty soft weekend at this point, with only the romantic comedy The Big Wedding slated for that day.

Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson, Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Bar Paly, Yolanthe Sneijder-Cabau, and Ken Jeong co-star.

Time to get offended. Ken Jeong joins Michael Bay's 'Pain and Gain'

Pretty much anytime Ken Jeong signs up for any film, especially when his character is named something like Johnny Wu, expect for the especially sensitive members of the Asian community to be up in arms over his portrayal. After a particularly irritating appearance as Jerry Wang(>sigh<) in Michael Bay's last Transformers film, he'll turn up next in the director's small scale heist film, Pain and Gain.

What part the Johnny Wu character plays in the dark crime comedy are still unclear, with the story based on the true story of a pair of Miami Beach bodybuilders(Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson) who kidnap a rich guy(Tony Shalhoub) and leave him for dead after robbing him, only to have him survive and start calling in favors. Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson, Tony Plana, Anthony Mackie, and Rob Corddry co-star.

Jeong can be good in small doses, like in The Hangover. So I have no idea how people tolerate him every week on Community. Pain and Gain just started shooting down in Miami, and is looking for a release some time next year. [THR]

Rebel Wilson joins Michael Bay's 'Pain and Gain'

Melissa McCarthy who? Nobody has stuffed their post-Bridesmaids schedule with more upcoming projects than Rebel Wilson, who was hilarious for dumping frozen peas on herself as Kristen Wiig's roommate. Already having completed the acapella musical comedy, Pitch Perfect(with Anna Kendrick), Wilson also has a role in What to Expect When You're Expecting, Struck By Lightning, Bachelorette, and will lend her voice to the next Ice Age movie. Sheesh. And she's not even close to finished.

EW reports that Wilson has joined the cast of Michael Bay's muscle headed indie crime caper, Pain and Gain. Based on a true story chronicled in the Miami New Times, Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg star as a pair of bodybuilders who are also part of a criminal ring involved in kidnapping, drugs, and murder. When their scheme to kidnap and extort a wealthy businessman(Tony Shalhoub) goes belly up, the victim hires a private detective(Ed Harris) to track them down. Think Fargo,  but with bigger biceps, more palm trees, and fewer wood chippers.  Anthony Mackie, Bar Paly, and Rob Corddry round out the cast so far. Wilson will play a woman who gets involved in their scheme and ends up behind bars for it.

I remember hearing somewhere that Bethenny Frankel, a reality TV creation who was on The Real Housewives of New York City, had read for a role but I don't know what ever came of that. Nor do I really care. Just thinking out loud.  Filming is set to begin next month or in May.

Well, duh. Michael Bay casts supermodel Bar Paly in 'Pain and Gain'; TV's 'Monk' also joins

Y'think maybe Michael Bay has a thing for casting supermodels in his movies? Maybe he's starting a new trend, after Rosie Huntington-Whiteley did such a beautiful job playing a shopping store mannequin in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Now he's looking to get another super hot, possibly more talented catwalk maven to star in his Fargo-esque crime flick, Pain and Gain.

Variety reports that Bar Paly has joined the low budget caper, about a pair of Florida bodybuilders played by Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, and their scheme to kidnap and kill a rich guy for the money. Unlike Huntington Whiteley, the Israeli born Paly has some legit acting experience, having recently played a role in Roman Coppola's A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. She also had a small part in the 2008 film, The Ruins, and has some TV stints as well. The role also seems perfectly suited for her, playing an ex-beauty queen turned illegal immigrant with big dreams, only to have those aspirations preyed upon by Wahlberg's character.

If Bay got the idea to cast her based on some scantily clad photos he Googled one day, it's doubtful he did the same when picking up Tony Shalhoub(Galaxy Quest) for the role of the kidnapping victim, Marc Schiller. Shalhoub spent about eight years playing the titular obsessive compulsive detective on Monk, but has also kept himself busy on the big screen. I guess this puts the kibosh on the recent rumors of John Turturro taking the role. They'll join Rob Corddry, Anthony Mackie, and Ed Harris when the film kicks off production shortly.

Anthony Mackie in talks to join Michael Bay's muscular crime flick, 'Pain and Gain'

With the Academy Award coming up this weekend it got me thinking, "Can an Oscar nomination be far in Anthony Mackie's future"? By all rights he should have been nominated for The Hurt Locker a couple of years ago, but it signaled his real arrival on the Hollywood map after years of great performances in movies like 8 Mile and Half Nelson. After a mixed bag of a 2011, Mackie's 2012 is looking spectacular. After appearing in the Sam Worthington thriller, Man on a Ledge, he'll turn up in two of the year's most anticipated films in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and Gangster Squad.

Now you can add one more eagerly awaited film to his list, as Variety reports Mackie is in talks to join Michael Bay's crime flick, Pain and Gain. Based on a true story, the film stars Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as a pair of bodybuilders who run a criminal ring down in Florida. After kidnapping and leaving for dead a rich businessman, the plan goes belly up when he survives and hires an investigator to track them down. Rob Corddry, Ed Harris, and possibly John Turturro will co-star. Mackie's role would be as a good-hearted bodybuilder working out at the same gym, who joins their twisted scheme.

Mackie's not likely to win any Oscars for this role, either, but his time is coming.  Production on Pain and Gain begins this spring.

Rob Corddry joins Michael Bay's 'Pain and Gain'; John Turturro circling a role?

Because the first thing I think of when I see Rob Corddry(Hot Tub Time Machine) is an "ex-bodybuilder". The prolific funnyman behind the delightfully demented Children's Hospital,  is looking to add one more high profile gig to an already jam packed 2012, as Variety reports he'll be a part of Michael Bay's small budget crime caper, Pain and Gain.

Joining Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in the crime comedy(which reportedly has no action), Corddry will play John Mese, a former bodybuilder who now runs the gym where Wahlberg's character is a personal trainer. Due to his accounting skills, he becomes an unwilling participant in Wahlberg and Johnson's kidnapping scheme which goes awry. Actually, it turns up quite a bit worse than that, as the guy they kidnap and leave for dead, Marc Schiller, survived the assault and comes back looking for some serious revenge. Latino Review is reporting that John Turturro, who knows Bay well after appearing in all three of his Transformers movies, may be taking on the Schiller role. Apparently, Albert Brooks had been up for the role before but the deal fell through for unknown reasons.

Bay has been talking up the film a little bit, and claims to be inspired by such crime classics as Fargo and Pulp Fiction. He couldn't have picked two better ones to draw inspiration from, and if Pain and Gain is even a fraction as good as those, we may finally have reason to shut up about Bay being a one trick pony. With Corddry and possibly Turturro coming aboard, it certainly sounds like there will be more laughs than explosions.

Dwayne Johnson confirmed for Michael Bay's 'Pain and Gain'; Ed Harris circling a role

I know there are some people out there who want Michael Bay to skip all this indie movie nonsense and get on with Transformers 4, but you're going to have to wait awhile longer. Pain and Gain, his Fargo-esque crime flick about a bunch of muscle heads who royally screw up a kidnapping plot, is speeding along, with recent reports having Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson considering the lead role.

Vulture confirms that Johnson has won out, playing one of the Florida bodybuilders who kidnap and rob a wealthy businessman with plans to murder him. Only they turn out to be morons, and the guy recovers from his injuries, only to hire a private investigator to track his assailants down. As if the idea of Johnson playing an idiotic weightlifter isn't cool enough, Ed Harris is apparently circling the role of the investigator. Harris and Bay know each other pretty well, having worked together on The Rock.

With a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely(Captain America: The First Avenger), the micro-budgeted film(about $20M) should begin filming in the spring.

*UPDATE* Michael Bay in final talks to direct fourth Transformers film

* Update*
Michael Bay left the following message on his official site. Sounds like nothing's as far along as we were led to believe....

Bay: "Right now I'm not decided on Transformers 4

Studio's are passing rumors but I'm not sure what I'm doing? I know I'm going to do Pain and Gain early spring but that's it for right now. I'm leaving all my options on the table. I've got several Studio meetings in the next two weeks."

Below is the original story from last night....

Michael Bay just can't quit the Autobots. After three mega successful, mega loud Transformers flicks, the director known for substituting human emotions and character development with a really good explosion decided to take a break and do something smaller. He started working on Pain and Gain, an indie crime flick(described as Fargo-esque) he's been building long before the Transformers entered his life, and pretty much bid a fond farewell to giant, city destroying robots.

Yeah right.

Vulture reports that Bay has entered talks with Paramount to direct a fourth film in the franchise, and if that sounds suspicious....well, there's a good reason for that. Apparently, Paramount is playing a bit of smashmouth football, essentially dangling Pain and Gain in front of him like a carrot. He either makes Transformers 4, or he can't complete his little indie experiment.  Bay has been planning this for a long time, but he's not officially signed to direct anything. A deal is said to be close to finalizing, and when that happens he would get started almost immediately on Pain and Gain. Yesterday news broke that Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are the chief candidates to star in the film about a pair of dopey bodybuilders who get involved with a kidnapping scheme that goes awry.

So what would a fourth Transformers film entail? Reports are it won't be a prequel, but will explore older characters and go deeper into Transformers lore. If that's the route they're taking, it sounds like the plan is to appeal more to the hardcore fan, which for a guy like me with Transformers action figures littering his room sounds pretty awesome. One thing is for certain and it's that we won't be seeing Shia Labeouf return to be the only action hero less imposing than his female co-stars.

It's kindof dickish for Paramount to do this, because Bay has earned them a buttload of money and should be allowed to make whatever film he wants. We'll see how this whole thing shakes out, but if the deal goes through Bay could begin production on Transformers 4 as early as next winter.

Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg in talks for Michael Bay's indie crime flick, Pain and Gain

Yeah, you read that title right. "Indie" and "Michael Bay" in the same sentence. Even before Transformers: Dark of the Moon hit theaters, the director with a fondness for explosions and damsels in distress was talking up his desire to do something different. Different as in leaving behind the big budgets and taking on a smaller film, which we learned was Pain and Gain, about a botched kidnapping plot by a couple of Florida muscle heads. The budget would be in the neighborhood of $20-$30M, which is what Bay usually spends on lunch. Now that he things appear to be rolling, a couple of names have popped up as potential stars that would all but guarantee a return on his investment.

After pairing up briefly in The Other Guys, Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson may be set to do so again, with Variety reporting the two are being mentioned as possible stars. No offers have been made, with the site noting that Johnson may be the first to sign on, while Wahlberg's crammed schedule could be an issue. The script has been written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely(Captain America: The First Avenger), which they liken to the Coen Brothers' classic crime film, Fargo. The true story comes from a story in the Miami New Times.

There's been some rumblings of Bay possibly returning for another Transformers film, but until that happens it's the land of Indie Spirits for him. Wahlberg will be seen next in Contraband, coming out in January. Johnson will be poppin' his pecs alongside Josh Hutcherson and Michael Caine(!!!?) in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, due out in February.
