Blu-Ray Deal of the Week: ''Underworld' and 'Resident Evil' Collections for 60% Off

Quick name two of the most successful and long-running franchises in Hollywood history! Okay, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter will probably spring to mind first but not far behind them are two unlikely options: Underworld and Resident Evil. Underworld, which began in 2003 with Kate Beckinsale as a vampire "Death Dealer" battling werewolves, has earned over $450M through four films with a fifth on the way. Resident Evil, based on the Capcom video games, has done even better with more than $900M through five movies with the sixth and final coming in 2016.

For this week only you can stock up on both franchises at an incredible price. You can get Underworld: The Legacy Collection for only $27.99, that's 63% off what you'll pay in stores! For that you get all four movies plus hours of bonus content which hopefully includes more of Beckinsale in skintight leather. And for only $31.99 you can also get The Resident Evil Collection; all five movies for 67% off.

Because You Demanded It: 'The Mortal Instruments' and 'Resident Evil' to Become TV Series

The number of YA adaptations that actually succeed is shockingly few, which is why it was kind of a big deal when The Maze Runner hit $200M last week. Many of these films bomb hard, and one that audiences simply stayed away from last year was The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The $60M film based on Cassandra Clare's gothic supernatural books banked about $30M domestic (another $59M internationally) and was gone faster than you could say Shadowhunter. Producers moved ahead anyway on sequel, City of Ashes, which was to have arrived this year, but obviously that didn't happen and now they're headed in a different direction entirely.

According to THR, The Mortal Instruments will live on as a TV series, developed by Constantin Film and led by showrunner Ed Decter (Helix, The Client List). The drama series will go into production next year but no word on if the original cast will be involved.  Many of the film's stars have extensive TV backgrounds, like Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Kevin Durand (The Strain), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors), and Jamie Campbell Bower (Camelot) but are also extremely busy or occupied with other shows.

So expect to see an entirely new The Mortal Instruments and probably a new approach to the material, one that Constantin Film's Martin Moszkowicz says will be able to go deeper than the movie could ever hope to.

Moskowicz:  “It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series. There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”

They're also reportedly working on a Resident Evil TV series, along with one based on the serial killer film, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.  Resident Evil isn't expected to go into development until after the final movie in 2016.

Watch the Super Bowl TV Spot for 'Pompeii'; Paul W.S. Anderson Delays Next 'Resident Evil'

Ever since 2002, Paul W. S. Anderson has been pretty good about dropping another Resident Evil on us every couple of years. The inexplicably long-lived franchise, far and away the most successful video game adaptation ever, released its fifth film in 2012 with Resident Evil: Retribution, with the sixth and "final" one expected to arrive this year. But while making the press rounds for Pompeii, Anderson revealed to Comingsoon that it may be awhile before we see his wife Milla Jojovich slice up more zombies.

Anderson's comments suggest the film won't hit the September 12th release date because Jojovich is off shooting another movie. He's also going to take that time to relax and spend time with their kids, which is certainly his right to do. Chances are it will arrive as part of the jam-packed 2015 field. I have a feeling he'll also begin plans for whatever form the franchise will take after the sixth movie, whether that involves a continuation or a total reboot. 'Retribution' earned $240M and they aren't all that expensive, so why mess around with what isn't broken?

Meanwhile, the Super Bowl spot for Pompeii has been released before the opening kick-off and...well, it looks like an Anderson movie. Lots of lava, people screaming, big action and not much else. It might be entertaining, though, if only due to the cast that includes Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland, Adewale Akkinuoye-Agbage, Jared Harris, Jessica Lucas, and Paz Vega.  Pompeii opens February 21st 2014.

Paul W.S. Anderson will direct 'Resident Evil 6'

There is no Resident Evil franchise without its star, Milla Jojovich, so learning that she's definitely coming back for the sixth and presumably final film isn't exactly news.  Screen Gems set a September 2014 release date for the film earlier this month, and while it was suggested that Jojovich's husband Paul W.S. Anderson would be behind the camera, it wasn't confirmed until now.

Firstshowing has confirmed Anderson as the director, and while he's been the engine driving the franchise since the beginning, he's also been known to hand over the reins to others on a couple of occasions. The plan is to begin filming this fall, using the same visual effects house who worked on the last three films and The Three Musketeers. I thought Afterlife looked incredible, but Retribution was dark, muddy, and incomprehensible just like the plot. Speaking of which, there are still no details on how Anderson plans to wrap up the 11-year old series, which began life as an adaptation of the hit Capcom video game.

Resident Evil: Full Throttle/Incineration/Revolutions/Whatever hits theaters on September 12th 2014. Anderson will first tackle Pompeii, the historical disaster film starring Kit Harington, Emily Browning, and the newly added Jared Harris.

Jojovich confirms Resident Evil 5 "definitely" will happen

Not that this should come as a surprise to anybody, but Milla Jojovich confirmed that there will be a fifth(!!) installment of the Resident Evil franchise. Resident Evil: Afterlife had the biggest opening weekend of any of the series' films thus far. Of course it also had the benefit of 3-D ticket sales backing it up.  She told Vulture...

Jojovich: “This new Resident Evil is the first one to ever open at number one worldwide. It’s the biggest movie in the franchise,” “So we’re definitely going to make another one.”

The leggy actress also says that the creation of the next film will be an interactive experience, with her husband, director Paul W.S. Anderson possibly seeking fan input and  ideas via Twitter. Hey, I got an idea. Let me tweet it right quick....

@PaulWSAnderson Jojovich. Larter. Kissing in undies. Shower scene. Zombies attack. Big $$$ opening weekend. Fans luv u 4ever.

Tops at the Box Office

1. Resident Evil: Afterlife- $27.7M
It's not often that any franchise sees it's highest numbers this deep in, but the 4th Resident Evil flick has accomplished exactly that. Then again there wasn't a heckuva lot else to see this week ,was there?
2. Takers- $6.1M/$48.1M
The heist flick jumped back into the #2 slot by suffering a meager 44% drop from last week.
3. The American- $5.9M/$28.3M
Hey, I loved it. Apparently everybody else who saw it told their friends that Clooney ain't exactly Jason Bourne in this contemplative thriller.
4. Machete- $4.2M/$20.8M
Hey, it's still beating out Grindhouse. Not by much though.
5. Going the Distance- $3.83M/$14M
6. The Other Guys- $3.6M/$113M
7. The Last Exorcism- $3.45M/$38.2M
8. The Expendables- $3.25M/$98.5M
Considering the slow crawl to a $100M, I wouldn't be so sure a sequel is as guaranteed as we thought.
9. Inception- $3.02M/$282M
10. Eat Pray Love- $2.9M/$74.6M

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Paul W.S.Anderson has been nurturing his Resident Evil franchise through four films now. I've seen them all. Ask me how much I remember about the previous three? Absolutely nothing. Straight down the memory hole. What began as a series based on the popular video game turned into a muddled mess of corporate conspiracies, clones, and steroid jacked mutant zombies. At this point they could probably start over from scratch and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. In a way, that's exactly what happens as Resident Evil: Afterlife goes back to it's survival horror with a story similar to one of George Romero's classics. While I hesitate to call it good, at least I might be able to recall it in a couple of weeks.

After a massive battle with the sinister corporation known as Umbrella, Alice(Milla Jojovich) finds herself completely powerless. All of her numerous clones are destroyed, and she's off on her own. Suddenly remembering all those folks she sent away at the end of the last film, she goes off in search of her friends at an idyllic town called Arcadia but finds only a brainwashed Claire Redfield(Ali Larter). As Claire slowly regains her memory of exactly what happened, the two sexy femme fatales team up with a group of human survivors holed up in an abandoned prison. Of course it's surrounded by thousands of zombies, including a massive boss wielding a hatchet the size of Brock Lesnar.  They must all band together to escape and make their way to the assumed safety Arcadia has to offer.

The biggest draw this go 'round has nothing to do with the threadbare plot, the insane Matrix-inspired action, or even the hotness of it's two leads. That was enough for me, of course, but what's been pushed the most was Anderson's startling use of James Cameron's 3-D technology to push the intensity to another level. It's clear that he was having way too much fun with the camera as blades, bullets, blood literally pop from the screen. The technique is hit and miss, as some sequences are amazing to behold, some of the best uses of 3-D seen this year. The problem is that the style is overused, and Anderson seemed to be looking for any excuse to utilize it even when the scene doesn't ask for it.

When I say the action is similar to The Matrix, it's not an understatement. Bullet time, slow motion gun battles in office buildings, and a villain who looks eerily like Agent Smith make me think Anderson has been spending too much time with the Wachowskis. The action is intense, and bloody, with Jojovich and Larter dishing out the most punishment. You'll never hear me complain about the insane number of slow motion shots of these two slicing their way through a horde of the undead.  As long as the bullets are flying and nobody's stopping to chat, Afterlife isn't all that bad. The freshly plucked supporting cast is solid, and it's a definite plus introducing Claire's mysterious brother, Chris Redfield(Wentworth Miller). If only these characters had more to do. While turning this story into a dynamic variation of Romero's Dawn of the Dead is a nifty idea, the rest is mostly predictable nonsense.

Fans of the previous Resident Evils are bound to like this one. It's made solely for them. Anyone trying to jump into this franchise at this late stage would get lost from the very first mention of the T-Virus. The conclusion pretty much guarantees us more zombie hacking action is on the horizon. Just like one the zombie hordes infesting their world, Resident Evil just won't stay down for good.

New poster for 'Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D'

I know my cohort Travis will not be too pleased that we are promoting this flick, but what can I say the series has been one of my guilty pleasures from the beginning. These movies are the epitome of cable re-watch type movies, every time it's on, doesn't matter which one, I'll end up watching it. Good, cheap sci-fi action, with the addition of some tasty eye candy in Milla Jovovich. That being said I do have MAJOR reservations about this next film in the series. The trailer looked like absolute shit, like the cheesiest of 80's movies to use the 3D gimmick. One of the few nice things about this new wave of 3D is that the movies don't really seem to play up the 3D by having the characters point things at the camera and fly out toward you just to take advantage of this third dimension with a cheap trick. I'm sorry to say that, at least according to the trailer, this movie does just that and plays up to the 3D every chance it gets. I can only hope that this will only be a slight annoyance and this flick will continue the story of my beloved guilty pleasure with some semblance of the first three. Hell...even the poster looks to play up the 3D aspect, but we shall see I suppose.

Resident Evil: Afterlife teaser trailer!

In case you don't notice by all the miscellaneous objects flying at your face, the first teaser trailer for Resident Evil: Afterlife makes sure you know that it was “Filmed with the James Cameron/Vincent Pace Fusion Camera System!!". Ok, I get it! So this better look friggin' awesome, guys!

For real though, this is a pretty sweet trailer, with more of a Matrixy look and feel than the somewhat dusty, bland looking last couple of films. Still, it's Resident Evil so I'm highly suspicious of it. At least it looks like they might've gotten the 3-D right. Can't say the same about Clash of the Titans....

Check out the trailer, followed by a quick synopsis.

SYNOPSIS: In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the Undead, Alice continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead leads them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

Resident Evil: Afterlife stars Milla Jojovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller and is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. It's set to be released on September 10, 2010.

1st Look at RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE!

Y'know, I'm none too excited about...what is this..the fourth film in the Resident Evil series? The first one was ok, but honestly it's gotten a little too far out for me now. If it was more like the video game, with a bunch of folks stuck in towns overrun by mutant zombies, I'd  be all over it. With that said, Screengems released the first set of photos(via Myspace) from that name stealer Paul W. S. Anderson, who returns as writer, director, and producer. Of course the smokin' hot Milla Jojovich returns to be overshadowed by my #1 draft pick Ali Larter. Prison Break's Wentworth Miller is also now on board as Chris Redfield, brother to Larter's Claire Redfield character.

Take a gander at the photos below and let us know what you think!

Resident Evil: Afterlife is due to be released on September 10th, 2010.

Resident Evil 4 Trailer Attached to Nightmare on Elm Street

I've been dreading this news, but here goes: Milla Jojovich confirmed via her Twitter page that the trailer for Resident Evil 4 would be releasing alongside theatrical showings of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Elm Street is due out on April 30th.

The fourth film, titled Resident Evil: Afterlife, is picks up right where the third film left off with Alice(Jojovich) seeking out any remaining survivors. Ali Larter is also back aboard reprising her role as Claire Redfield.

Resident Evil: Afterlife is due to hit theatres on September 10, 2010.

Let's just say that I'm no fan of the RE series, either the game or the movie. The first one was ok, but ever since it's gotten increasingly silly, and now I couldn't even begin to tell you what the last one was about. I think Mike Epps was in it. I'm sure he died. That's all I remember.
