Jan de Bont to direct remake of the Johnny Cash-starring thriller, 'Five Minutes to Live'

Talk about being in director's prison. Jan de Bont was the sh*t around Hollywood in the 80s and 90s, initially putting his stamp on movies like Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and Basic Instinct as a cinematographer. When he finally made the jump into full on directing, he proved to have the touch for fast paced, special effects heavy popcorn flicks that made serious bank, with Speed and Twister in a two year period. But after the disastrous Speed 2, and another awful sequel in Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, de Bont hasn't directed anything since 2003. Ouch.

Well now he's back, and about to take on a remake of one of the weirdest crime flicks I ever saw. Deadline reports he'll direct a remake of Five Minutes To Live, the 1961 film re-released in 1966 as Door-to-Door Maniac. Why's it so weird? Because it stars legendary musician Johnny Cash as one of the bad guys, with Cash's music a central cog to the film. Not only does he provide the title track during the opening credits, but Cash's character frequently sings about about the demise of his hostage while holding her captive. Creepy.

Written by Raul Inglis(Transparency), the crime thriller centers on a small town bank robbery pulled by two hardened criminals. The plan has one robbing the bank, while the other holds the bank president's wife hostage to make sure everything goes smoothly. Think it goes according to plan? Of course not.

It's good to see de Bont back in action, but I hope they make the inspired move of having another musician as one of the leads. Maybe Justin Timberlake? I can see that.
