Sure Shots: Rob Marshall; Zach Helm; 'Thor 2'
* It may have seemed like a weird fit at first, but vaunted stage director Rob Marshall scored big time with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Now that it's over and he's made bank on it, the Chicago director is looking to bring another Broadway musical to the silver screen. Teaming up with Disney yet again, Marshall is set to take on an adaptation of Into the Woods, the popular Broadway musical written by Steven Sondheim and James Lapine. The story intertwines a number of fairy tale characters with the story of a baker and his wife's attempts to have a family. Lapine will provide the script, with Sondheim preparing all new songs. Marshall is set to direct Johnny Depp in a remake of The Thin Man, but it's unclear which project will come first. [THR]
* Zach Helm suddenly finds himself a very popular guy. The Stranger Than Fiction scribe is already in the process of adapting cryogenics comedy, Freezing People is Easy, for Errol Morris, and now he's set to adapt Patricia Highsmith's 1957 novel, Deep Water. The suspense thriller follows a couple in a loveless marriage, who stick together only through an arrangement in which the wife can have as many affairs as she wants as long as she doesn't desert her family. The husband decided to take charge and win her back with a made up story of murder, which eventually comes true. Highsmith tells the type of stories that turn into Hollywood classics. She wrote the novels for The Talented Mr. Ripley and Strangers On a Train.[THR]
* After hitting a little bit of turbulence on the directing front, losing two directors in a matter of months, Marvel finally settled on Alan Taylor(Game of Thrones) to take over their planned Thor sequel. Now all that's needed to keep the ball rolling is a fresh rewrite of Don Payne's script. Robert Rodat(Saving Private Ryan) will provide a new draft for the superhero film, set to hit theaters on November 15th 2013. [Deadline]
