'Mama' director Andres Muschietti to helm 'Bird Box'

Universal may want to turn this year's horror hit Mama into a franchise, but director Andres Muschietti has already said he wants no part of it. The film is inching its way up to $100M worldwide, and the studio wants to keep the promising filmmaker under their tent by lining up another gig for him. THR reports he's been hired to helm an adaptation of Bird Box, the upcoming debut novel from The High Strung frontman Josh Malerman.

Due to be published in 2014, the story is said to  “a blindfolded threesome comprised of a woman and two children who make their way down a river in a seemingly post-apocalyptic setting.” Muschietti's sister Barbara will be on board as a producer, having joined him previously in co-writing Mama. A search is on for a writer, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Muschiettis team up on it.

Muschietti is climbing the ranks of Hollywood directors pretty fast, and this sounds like an interesting film to undertake. Expect more info on this one soon.
