Trailer for 'Accidental Love', formerly David O. Russell's 'Nailed'

Filmed way back in 2008 and faced with more than a dozen production shutdowns, few thought David O. Russell's comedy Nailed would ever see the light of day. Well, now it will....sorta. The star-studded film has been given the bland title of Accidental Love, and is directed by some guy named Stephen Greene, which is clearly a pseudonym of the Alan Smithee variety. Clearly, Russell wants nothing to do with the project anymore, and given how bad this trailer is it's easy to see why.

Starring Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, James Marsden, Catherine Keener, James Brolin, Tracy Morgan, and many more, Accidental Love is a political satire about a woman who is accidentally shot in the head with a nail gun, giving her fits of rage and sexual desire. Unable to afford health insurance to treat the ailment, she hooks up with a slimy politician and heads to Washington to champion for the rights of the bizarrely injured. This trailer is a complete mess and seems stitched together with spit and bailing wire, which is probably what Millennium Entertainment did in trying to salvage it.

If there's a positive to be taken from this it's that Accidental Love will finally open on February 10th, putting a nail in Nailed's coffin for good.

David O. Russell wants Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper for 'Joy'

If you're going to hook your wagon to a trio of stars, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper are pretty good options. David O. Russell has found the greatest success of his career working with them over his last two films, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, and it looks like he wants to keep the good times going with his Joy Mangano biopic, Joy.

Jennifer Lawrence is already on board to star as Mangano, famously known as the inventor of the Miracle Mop. She was just another housewife struggling to get by until she created the easy-wringing mop, and earned a fortune selling it on QVC. While talking with Go (tip of the hat to ThePlaylist), Russell revealed his hope for De Niro to join the cast, and that a role is being fashioned for Cooper...

Russell: “We’re gonna take some risks we haven’t taken before, in storytelling and cinematically.  I think I’d very much like (Robert) De Niro to be in it, I think he’s gonna be in it.  And of course I always create a role for Bradley Cooper.  I try to have things people have never done.  Then they can get excited, and it’s exciting for audiences.  That’s what makes it daring in some way.”

I kind of miss the days when Russell and Mark Wahlberg were the dynamic duo, and maybe some day we'll get to see that pairing again. But it's undeniable he's found a certain chemistry between Lawrence, Cooper, and De Niro that audiences are responding to.  Joy is set to open next year on Christmas Day.

David O. Russell wants Jennifer Lawrence for Biopic on Miracle Mop Inventor

David O. Russell is no dummy. He knows a good thing when he sees it, and considering the success he's had with Jennifer Lawrence on Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, it's no wonder he wants to keep her close, even if his next project is about the origin of the Miracle Mop.

Russell is circling the director's chair for a biopic on Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangars who built her mega empire while working a number of jobs, earning her college degree, and raising three kids as a single mom. The script was written by Bridesmaids writer and co-star Annie Mumolo, and Russell would give it a rewrite if he comes aboard. And of course he wants Lawrence to play Mangano, who has become a fixture on Home Shopping Network.

Whether Lawrence is even available will prove to be the big question, as she has a couple of The Hunger Games sequels to go, not to mention her commitments to the X-men franchise. She's also attached to reteam with Gary Ross for East of Eden and Burial Rites, and was attached to work with Russell again on The Ends of the Earth. But if she can find the time you can bet this film is going to be looked at as a potential Oscar favorite.  [Deadline]

Review: 'American Hustle' Starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Bradley Cooper

David O. Russell's swingin' 1970s ode to greed and corruption American Hustle tells you right up front, hey "Some of this actually happened". It's the one kernel of honesty in a film that's swimming with sharks, but at the same time there's the subtle admission that you're going to be conned, so just sit back and enjoy the ride. Russell, who has found ways to have a good time with everything from the Iraq War to boxing to mental illness, has crafted one of the most enjoyable movies of the year, and certainly being swindled has never been this much fun.

Russell is no moron; he knows his skyrocketing success after The Fighterand Silver Linings Playbook can be attributed as much to his cast as to himself, and he's smart enough to bring them back and turn them loose. Christian Bale transforms the most; chubby, Jersey-accented, and elaborately hairdo'ed as Irving Rosenfeld, a petty con man who has never really known a way of life that didn't involve scamming others. He's a survivor, or so he likes to call himself, and he finds his kindred spirit in Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), a woman with a great (and very fake) English accent. She wields it like a weapon, almost as effectively as she wields her oozing sexuality, and soon she and Irving are an inseparable pair, romantically and professionally. Russell is clearly enamored with the little oasis of relative calm Irving and Sydney find in one another, literally sweeping us through their courtship in a dizzying array of brassy jazz music (their mutual love of Duke Ellington's boisterous 'Jeep's Blues' says more about them than anything) and prances through the Manhattan streets. Their happiness comes at the expense of others, hustling fools out of $5,000 with a fairly simple loan scam that relies on the victim to basically trick himself.

The fun 'n games take a turn with the arrival of ambitious FBI agent Richie DiMaso, played by Bradley Cooper in another case of shocking stunt hairdo casting. How is Javier Bardem nowhere to be found in this movie? Catching her red-handed while Irving has the chance to skate free, Richie offers them total freedom if they help entrap corrupt power players looking to pad their bank accounts at the expense of the public. The film is based, extremely loosely, on the real-life Abscam scandal, an FBI plot that eventually took down a number of low-level politicians, but it's not remembered with any particular fondness due to the questionable lengths the government went to. That idea of governmental overreach is a small cog in the puzzle, as DiMaso eventually ups the ante by targeting well-meaning mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), a decision that proves to be a very dangerous one.

Forget keeping track of the messy Abscam puzzle, which comes to include fake Arab sheiks and mafia big wigs; the most ruthless games being played are of the heart, with each new development spinning these screwed-up characters into wildly different directions so you never know who has the upper hand. DiMaso pulls the strings, sending Irving off to get in close with the mayor, while he and Sydney get close in a totally different way.

But this isn't just another love triangle of petty jealousies and broken hearts; we’ve seen that story before, especially with morally dubious characters like this that have serious trust issues. Jennifer Lawrence throws molten hot lava on the situation as Irving's unhinged, batty wife Rosalyn, with whom he shares an adopted son. When he's forced to bring her out on a double date with the mayor, Sydney is understandably pissed, sending her scurrying into DiMaso's arms, although he has his own marital issues that need sorting out. With the exception of the egotistical DiMaso, the rest of these characters are scrappers, prone to doing whatever they need to in order to get by.  "Did you ever have to find a way to survive and you knew your choices were bad, but you had to survive?” Irving asks at one point. And it's that toughness in the face of a constantly shifting emotional landscape that keeps American Hustle thrilling and the audience on its toes. Russell, who co-wrote the script with Eric Warren Singer, constantly reframes the power structure, and the film has a deftness to it that feels like it could go absolutely anywhere.

There's no shortage of talent in big and small roles that Russell has managed to put together, and it's a credit to him that he is always able to pull terrific, if largely over-the-top performances.  While some have been quick to criticize Bale's performance, perhaps because it's such an easy target given the physical transformation he undergoes, he's completely convincing and strangely sympathetic as Irving. On the other end of the spectrum, DiMaso is a total douche and Cooper has a great deal of fun playing him as one. DiMaso is the worst kind of crook, who puts his own ambitions over others while pretending to do what's right and just.

But this is a film that belongs to the ladies, and it can be argued no director knows how to better utilize Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence better than Russell. Both women are on fire here, smoldering with sexual energy (bras must not be a thing in the '70s) that they use to engulf the men in their lives. In one of the finest performances she's ever given, Adams is flawless as Sydney, depicting her as someone who has been to the bottom and will do whatever it takes to never go back. She's not just some damsel stuck to the whims of two warring men; she's got her own schemes which prove to be the most central thing in this story that is kind of all over the map. Lawrence gets the most sizzle and the biggest laughs as Rosalyn, a self-centered user who drinks too much and always seems on the verge of either a breakdown or breaking out in dance. She does a little bit of both, actually, when she's not throwing Irving's plan into disarray by her mere presence.  Others pop in for oversized cameos and all of them have a certain charm, whether it’s Robert De Niro as an infamous mobster (type-casting? Not really.) or Michael Pena as a Mexican posing as an Arab prince.

The version of the 1970s Russell fashions is an artifice in itself, a little indulgent and certainly more stylized than the era warrants, but it all fits for the world he's dropped these crazy characters into. The soundtrack is easily one of the year's finest, and surprises by not falling back on the usual period staples. There are too many angles being played for the story to hold together completely, and there's never any real sense of danger, but Russell deserves credit for not blowing things out of proportion when he easily could have. A few corners are cut to conveniently wrap up all that unnecessary Abscam stuff and get right to the emotional payoffs, which resonate more than many movies of this type usually deliver. Few movies had greater expectations than this one ever since Russell began putting it together, especially when it was dropped smack dab in the middle of awards season. But unlike all of the other movies out there grasping desperately for gold, American Hustle makes it look easy.

Duke Ellington Unites Christian Bale & Amy Adams in New 'American Hustle' Clip

Screenings are just beginning to roll out for David O. Russell's American Hustle, and it remains one of the season's biggest mysteries. Fortunately the curtain is being lifted ever so slightly with a steady stream of clips, suggesting this is going to be one snazzy, star-studded retro crime caper, with probably a better than average shot of scoring some Oscar gold. At least it has a pretty good shot at winning in the acting categories with a cast of Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, and Bradley Cooper running things. But how about the soundtrack? Any possibility for a win there?

The latest clip gives us a taste of the jazzy 1970s-80s score that will be backing the film, as well as how important music is in the lives of the film's two lead characters. In this scene, Bale's con man is instantly drawn to Adams, who would later go on to become his mistress and partner-in-crime. They bond over the recent passing of jazz legend Duke Ellington (so this would have to be 1974?), and their love of "Jeep's Blues", from his famous live album Ellington at Newport. Pretty sweet clip, and that tune in the background is Chicago's "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?". Not a particular favorite of mine but it works here.

American Hustle hits theaters on December 18th.

New Trailer for 'American Hustle' Starring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, and Amy Adams

Even with a flashy trailer and some snazzy vintage posters already out there, it's tough to get a handle on David O. Russell's American Hustle. Do we look at it as Oscar-worthy political drama, or a star-studded comedy poking fun at our corrupt government leaders?  We've still got more than two months to figure it out, and a new trailer has arrived that offers up an even bigger look.

A stellar ensemble led by Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner takes back into the 1970s during the infamous Abscam scandal, in which the FBI teamed up with con man (Bale) and his partner/mistress (Adams) to expose other con artists and political corruption. It's a fascinating story deserving of the big screen treatment, and with a cast like this and O. Russell behind the camera this should be a lot of fun no matter what the tone turns out to be.

Co-starring Robert De Niro, Michael Pena, Louis C.K., and Jack Huston, American Hustle opens on Christmas Day.

First Trailer for David O. Russell's 'American Hustle' with Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Christian Bale and More

"Who's the master? The painter? Or the forger"? David O. Russell's American Hustle has been the subject of a great many questions, mostly surrounding the tone he's aiming to get across. We've seen the vintage hairdos and the snazzy outfits that suggest it'll be a comedic riff on political history in the vein of The Informant! But Russell has promised it will be a fully dramatic ensemble piece, chronicling a real life scandal that destroyed more than few political careers. Now we're getting a first look at the trailer, and it's definitely more of the latter.

Mostly free of dialogue and relying heavily on Led Zeppelin's "Good Times, Bad Times", the trailer doesn't provide much in the way of plot, but gives a brilliant sense of mood and the early 1980s time period. Based on the FBI Abscam sting operation, Christian Bale plays a con man who along with his mistress/partner (Amy Adams) are recruited to help root out political corruption. Bradley Cooper plays the out-of-control agent they're forced to work with, and Jeremy Renner is a popular New Jersey mayor caught up in the sting. The supporting cast is incredible with Jennifer Lawrence, Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Rohm, Dawn Olivieri, Jack Huston, Michael Pena, Robert De Niro and Louis C.K. co-starring.

Is there any wonder Sony has slotted it for an awards season date on Christmas Day?

First Looks at Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams in 'American Hustle'

Now that the summer season is winding down, the awards-worthy dramas are starting to flaunt their stuff. And there's no other film with more reason to strut than David O. Russell's American Hustle. The Oscar-nominated director has reunited much of his Silver Linings Playbook and attracted a wealth of other A-list stars for the political thriller dealing with a real life scandal that brought down careers. Sounds like intense, significant material, but as these first photos show, the 1970s setting also sets the stage for some amazing hairdos.

USA Today has released the new stills which feature an unrecognizable Bradley Cooper, a tarty Amy Adams, and Christian Bale in full Les Grossman mode. The story is based on the 1970s-80s Abscam sting operation, in which a con artist (Bale) and his lover/accomplice (Adams) team up with an FBI agent (Cooper) to root out Congressional corruption. While the images suggest this could be a quirky sort of political comedy, the tone is said to be serious and in keeping with a film that Sony clearly has high Oscar hopes for.

Also starring Jeremy Renner, Robert De Niro, Louis C.K., Jennifer Lawrence, Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Rohm, Dawn Olivieri, Jack Huston, and Michael Pena, American Hustle opens in limited release on December 13th before going wide Christmas Day.

David O. Russell's Abscam film finally gets a title

It was obvious right away that David O. Russell's upcoming project would be in desperate need of a new title. The marketing boys would be having fits trying to find a way to make American Bullshit work. Although with a cast that includes Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, and Robert De Niro, you could call it pretty much anything and people would turn out. With shooting now underway, we can finally stop calling it the "untitled Abscam film" and start calling it American Hustle.

With some truly hilarious set photos already flooding in, it looks like we can expect this to be more of a silly crime romp than a serious political drama. The story is set during the Abscam scandal of the late 70s and early 80s, in which a con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner (Adams) are forced to work with a reckless FBI agent (Cooper) to set up other con artists, criminals, and crooked politicians. Renner is the popular New Jersey state assemblyman at the center of it all.

Opening nationwide on Christmas Day, American Hustle also stars Louis C.K., Alessandro Nivola, Michael Pena, Dawn Olivieri, Elisabeth Rohm, and Jack Huston.[Box Office Mojo]

David O. Russell's Abscam film hits this December

He's already found a measure of Oscar success with The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, but David O. Russell may not be done yet. Bringing back practically everyone he hit it big with the last few years, O. Russell's upcoming film formerly titled American Bullshit has just landed a release date that puts it square in the awards season mix.

Columbia Pictures has given his film based on the 1980s Abscam scandal a December 13th limited release date, before opening nationwide on Christmas Day. Why such a high-profile date? Well let's take a look at the cast, shall we? Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Louis C.K., and..oh yeah, Alessandro Nivola (Junebug) just joined today. That's what I like to call a Murderer's Row, folks.

Penned by Eric Singer (The International), the film tells the true story of Abscam, in which a notorious financial con artist(Bale) and his mistress/partner (Adams) are forced to work with an out of control fed (Cooper) to turn the tables on politicians, mobsters, and other con artists. Renner will play a New Jersey state assemblyman at the heart of the scandal, while Lawrence will play Bale's wife. Nivola takes on the role of a federal prosecutor.

Filming begins later this month.

Christian Bale to join David O. Russell and Jennifer Lawrence in 'The Ends of the Earth'?

If David O. Russell is remembered for anything beyond just his body of work, it will be on the long-lasting relationships he's forged along the way. Mark Wahlberg would be the first and most notable one, even if that seems to have fallen by the wayside. Lately, Russell has been sticking close to Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, and Jennifer Lawrence, all three appearing in his upcoming 'Abscam' drama. Lawrence will also be joining him for the period romantic drama, The Ends of the Earth, and now another prior collaborator may be coming aboard.

The Daily Mail drops a note that says Russell really wants Christian Bale for the film, taking on the role of 1920s oil tycoon Ernest Marland. The true story, scripted by Chris Terrio (Argo), has Jennifer Lawrence as Lydie Marland, who was adopted by her uncle Ernest and his wife when her real parents gave her up. The adoption is eventually annulled, with Lydie and Ernest marrying soon after, causing quite the nationwide scandal. The film follows Lydie and her controversial love to Ernest, their subsequent bankruptcy, then political aspirations.

Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, and Brad Pitt have also been mentioned as possibilities for the role, but obviously Russell wants someone he's more familiar with. Can't really blame him, considering the success he had with Bale on The Fighter. We'll see how Lawrence, Russell, and Bale work together when 'Abscam' begins rolling this month.  [via ThePlaylist]

David O. Russell follows Jennifer Lawrence to 'The Ends of the Earth'

Remember when Mark Wahlberg used to be David O. Russell's muse? The two were practically inseparable for awhile, and then it all just went *poof* after The Fighter. It looked like Bradley Cooper had stepped in to fill the friendship void after Silver Linings Playbook and the upcoming Abscam drama formerly known as American Bullshit, but it turns out Russell's real fave right now is Jennifer Lawrence.

Russell has come aboard to direct The Ends of the Earth, which Lawrence became attached to last summer. This would make three films in a row for the duo, assuming it's next on Russell's list. The Weinstein Company is backing this one, and they'll certainly want it to be Russell's follow-up to Abscam. The story's an intriguing one, too, chronicling the life of American socialite Lydie Marland. Written by Argo scribe, Chris Terrio, the film tells how Lydie was adopted by her wealthy uncle, Ernest Marland and his wife Virginia. When Virginia passed away, the 54 year-old Ernest annulled the adoption to Lydie, then married her, leading to all sorts of scandal. Ernest would eventually lose his fortune, bounce back to have a brief but successful political career, then pass away in 1941 with Lydie becoming a recluse in her final years.

Russell and Lawrence together again? Sign me up. I still think she's the frontrunner to win Best Actress, and he's got an outside shot at  Best Director this weekend. [THR]

Jennifer Lawrence reunites with David O. Russell and Bradley Cooper for Abscam film

David O. Russell. Christian Bale. Bradley Cooper. Jeremy Renner. Amy Adams. Louis C.K. And now Jennifer Lawrence. If you're not hyped for that movie without knowing a lick about it, then you may be at the wrong site.

Deadline reports that Lawrence has rejoined her Silver Linings Playbook duo of Russell and Cooper for the untitled Abscam thriller, formerly known as American Bullshit. This will be the third film Lawrence and Cooper have done together, as they have Susanne Bier's Depression-era film Serena all wrapped and ready for later this year.

Co-written by Eric Warren Singer (The International) and Russell, the film details the 1980s Abscam sting operation, in which the FBI forced a con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner (Adams) to help root out political corruption. Cooper plays the reckless federal agent running the operation, with Renner as the popular New Jersey state assemblyman caught up in the scandal. Lawrence will play Bale's wife, which means we may not see her on screen with Cooper at all.

While it's obviously early, is there any way this isn't already an Oscar contender for next year?

Christian Bale officially boards David O. Russell's next film with Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, and Amy Adams

David O. Russell is quickly becoming one of those directors where every film is perceived as a potential Oscar candidate. This season's Silver Linings Playbook is already being hyped as a possible Best Picture winner, following up on the love Russell received for The Fighter. Now Christian Bale, who took home some gold for his supporting role in the boxing flick has been confirmed for Russell's next project, formerly known as American Bullshit.

You might remember that Bale was one of the first to be attached to the political thriller, but it kinda looked like he was replaced by Bradley Cooper last month. Cooper's still there, and so is Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams. If only Melissa Leo could come aboard and Russell would have all of The Fighter's most decorated stars under one roof again(sorry Mark Wahlberg!). Seriously, this is one stacked line-up, and the story isn't half bad either.

The untitled film is based on the true story of the Abscam scandal, a 1980s FBI undercover operation to root out corruption in Congress. The plot was cooked up by former con artist, Melvin Weinberg(Bale), who along with his mistress(Adams), is forced to team up with an out of control federal agent(Cooper). Renner will play the volatile and charismatic leader of the New Jersey state assembly who is at the epicenter of the story.

Sounds pretty awesome, and with literally every person involved at the height of their careers right now, expect this film to be a big deal when it opens next year.

David O. Russell and Bradley Cooper re-teaming for 'American Sniper'?

So are David O. Russell and Bradley Cooper the newest and hottest hetero Hollywood couple? It used to be Russell and his The Fighter pal, Mark Wahlberg, but they've ditched one another on a couple of projects already and don't seem to be getting back together anytime soon. In fact, it was Cooper who replaced Wahlberg on Russell's adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook, which has received glowing reviews out of Toronto. The two are set to work together again on the political thriller, formerly titled American Bullshit, and they may already be planning their next project.

While talking to THR, Russell revealed that he and Cooper have also discussed American Sniper, the autobiography from military sniper Chris Kyle that the actor picked up the rights to back in May. Cooper will produce through his 22nd and Indiana production shingle, and likely star as the ten-year Navy SEAL who amassed more kills in recorded history, leading to the Iraqis putting a bounty on his head. Cooper would probably take the lead role, with Jason Hall(Spread) writing the script.

Russell certainly knows his way through movies set in the Middle East after making his big splash with Three Kings, so this seems like a project perfect for the duo. [via ThePlaylist]

Amy Adams joins David O. Russell's 'American Bullshit'

Amy Adams is pretty familiar with David O. Russell at this point, having worked with him on The Fighter just a few years ago. For that, she earned her third Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination, and although she didn't win, maybe the next time will be the charm?

Just a day after we learned Jeremy Renner may be replacing Christian Bale in the soon-to-be retitled political drama, American Bullshit, THR reports that Adams is the next to sign on. The film follows the 1980 Abscam FBI sting operation, in which con man Melvin Weinberg(Bradley Cooper) helped them ferret out corruption in Congress. Adams will play Max Gardner, Weinberg's girlfriend and accomplice.

Filming begins in February, and it sounds like another promising supporting turn for Adams. She'll be seen next in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, and then Man of Steel in the role of Lois Lane in Man of Steel.

Jeremy Renner replaces Christian Bale in the soon-to-be retitled 'American Bullshit'

This is why Jeremy Renner has like a thousand franchises under his belt. He says "Yes" to practically everything, and is always the first person studios call when they need a pinch hitter. Not only has he (sorta) replaced Matt Damon in the Bourne flicks, but now he's even subbing in for Batman.

Variety reports that Renner has replaced Christian Bale in the colorfully titled American Bullshit, to be directed by David O. Russell. With Bale busy on a twin-pack of Terrence Malick flicks, there was no way he could squeeze the film into his schedule, although to me Renner seems like an odd fit as a replacement. The film is based on the true story of Abscam, the 1980 FBI sting operation designed to put the kibosh on congressional corruption. Bradley Cooper is playing Melvin Weinberg, the con artist the FBI hired to man the operation, creating a dummy corporation and fake sheik used to entice politicians. Renner will play agent Jimmy Boyle, who works with Weinberg on the sting after once arresting the con man.

Renner's a very good actor, but not quite on Bale's level, if you ask me. So in that way I'm a little disappointed, but this sounds like the kind of true life story of political scandal that really gets me going. Now all they need to do is find a title they can actually put in a movie theater, which should be done by the time production begins next February.

Bradley Cooper joining Christian Bale in David O. Russell's 'American Bullshit'

The combination of David O. Russell and Christian Bale has already proven to be a success, with Bale earning a Best Supporting Oscar for The Fighter, and Russell finding what was far and away the biggest hit of his career. So it made sense for the two to work together again, with last month word breaking out that Bale would join Russell's American Bullshit, based on a Black List script by Eric Warren Singer(The International). Now it appears that Russell not only has Bale attached to the film, but his most recent leading guy in Bradley Cooper.

Just recently wrapping The Silver Linings Playbook for Russell, Cooper is said to be part of the package being shopped around to sell the film, with producing goddess Megan Ellison in talks to finance. The film centers on the ABSCAM FBI sting operation of the 1970s and 80s, run by ex-con artist Melvin Weinberg, and designed to root out corruption in Congress. Weinberg set up a dummy corporation which he used to lure in government officials, leading to the conviction of one US Senator, and five House representatives.

Hopefully this will be next on Russell's list, as it sounds like the most interesting of everything he's considering.  Could we looking at another Oscar contender? [Deadline]

*UPDATE* David O. Russell might direct 'American Bullshit' for Sony

*UPDATE* David O. Russell has gone on record about just where he stands in regards to directing American Bullshit, making this statement to Deadline...

Russell: “Reports that I am attached to American Bullshit are premature. It is something I am in early discussions on and I have great respect for Chuck Roven and Christian Bale. I am also developing other projects and have not chosen my next film.”

So if it does happen, he might be re-teaming with Christian Bale? Ok, my interest just kicked up about a dozen notches. The original story is below....

Ever since earning an Oscar nomination for the boxing drama, The Fighter, David O. Russell has seen his name thrown around a lot and attached to many projects which either didn't get off the ground or he ultimately dropped out of. Remember Uncharted: Drake's Fortune? How about 2 Guns? Or The Mission with Brad Pitt? A lot of this stuff has been tied to his buddy, Mark Wahlberg, with the two seeming to have had a falling out of some sort. While Russell is currently putting the finishing touches on The Silver Linings Playbook(which also had Wahlberg attached at one point), he's added another title to his extensive slate of possibilities.

THR says Russell will direct American Bullshit, based on the famous Abscam FBI sting operation that nailed a bunch of politicians for corruption in 1980. The entire operation was run by Melvin Weinberg, a convicted  con man the FBI hired solely for this job, setting up a fake Middle Eastern company with which to catch the politicans on video tape. Abscam led to the convictions of six members of Congress and a number of state officials.

Ben Affleck had been circling the Eric Singer(The International) written flick awhile back, but he's got enough government related flicks on his plate with Argo. This one is still in very early stages, so who knows what will come of it. Deadline says that Russell's reps deny his involvement, which to me doesn't sound promising at all. Either way, you can expect a title change at some point.

David O. Russell won't return for 'The Fighter' sequel

You could just sort of sense it, couldn't you? A growing animosity between former kindred spirits Mark Wahlberg and David O. Russell? The two have been joined at the hip for years, with Wahlberg starring in Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, and The Fighter for the director. Then there came that whole thing with the Uncharted adaptation, and while there was no beef at the time something seemed weird between them. O. Russell left, and there still seemed to be some question about whether Wahlberg would follow behind him.

Then the talk really started to heat up when Wahlberg was replaced by Bradley Cooper in The Silver Linings Playbook, O. Russell's next film which is already being whispered about as a possible future Oscar contender. Soon after, O. Russell would drop out of  2 Guns, a crime comedy he and Wahlberg had been attached to for months. He was replaced by Baltasar Kormákur, the director behind Wahlberg's latest, Contraband. So what's the deal? And what does this bode for the planned sequel to The Fighter?

ThePlaylist had a chance to speak to Wahlberg about it, and he says they are seeking a new director to helm the sequel, which would continue the story of "Irish" Micky Ward and his drug addict brother/trainer, played by Christian Bale. The film would presumably cover the legendary Gatti/Ward trilogy of slugfests. The script is being readied by Scott Silver, and Wahlberg says they'll choose a director once it's completed. Possibly in a year or year and a half is when they may begin.

This could all be overblown, and maybe Wahlberg and O. Russell are just as close as ever. It just doesn't look that way. Regardless, I'm not so sure I want to see a sequel. The Gatti/Ward fights are classics to me and every other fan of the sweet science. They don't need to be dramatized anymore than they were in real life.I'd much rather see somebody take on a thorough documentary on the trilogy.
