2013's Top 5 Fight Scenes!

When talking about entertainment two words almost always come up as must have's, sex and violence. Rocky covered the romantic side of things the other day with her 'Top 5 Kisses of 2013', which you can check out here, now it's time for the other side of that one-two punch of sure fire fun. Without further adieu let's get to some gratuitous violence, shall we?

5. Iron Man 3- Iron Man suit fleet VS The Mandarin
Iron Man 3 was not a good film, to be honest it was downright bad when it came to the final development of what was to be Tony Stark's archenemy. Yet, even the crappiest gift can have a pretty bow, and that's what we got at the end of Tony Stark's latest adventure. It's pure visual candy with plenty of easter eggy goodness for comic fans (see: Hulkbuster), it isn't particularly rewarding to the storyline nor does it make much sense in more than one facet but DAMN is it sweet to see the Iron Man squadron of suits come flying to Tony and that, my friends, is what merits a place at the bottom of this list.

4. Star Trek: Into Darkness- Klingon showdown
While more of a gun battle than a straight up fight there was no way I could leave this scene off the list. Benedict Cumberbatch was already on the fast track to my favorite actors list after seeing Sherlock, but this scene, in which he mows down a squadron of Klingon warriors perfectly illustrates the capabilities of this villain. Extra points for the cool black hooded trenchcoat!

3. The World's End- Bar Fight
It's kind of an odd thing to have a movie show up in both a best fights list and a funniest scenes list. Unfortunately I ran into the same problem that Mae did earlier this week when she included The World's End in her Top 5 funniest scenes of 2013 list, which you can check out here, that problem is that, oddly, there seem to be no clips of these scenes anywhere on the 'net. In any event the fight that puts this awesome flick on my list of best fights comes about 3/4 of the way into the film when the group decides to stop trying to be inconspicuous and take the blanks head on. If you haven't seen this movie get out there and do so now, watching Nick Frost nail a combat roll and the wield two bar stools like a veteran bar ninja is one of the greatest things to happen inside of a theater this year. The best part? It's not done for laughs, the choreography is legit and would not look out of place in something like a remake of Roadhouse (with different actors of course).

2. GI Joe: Retaliation- Snake Eyes V Storm Shadow 2
Do I really need to explain my reasoning here? These guys are the ultimate ninja warriors, the characters we all wanted to be the most when we were kids...hell even their names are right out of Encyclopedia Badassica. We got to see a lesser version of this ultimate showdown in GI Joe: Rise of Cobra but the battle we get in Retaliation blows that one away. As if that weren't enough we also get Jinx, Snake Eyes protege, and a legion of Storm Shadow trained ninja thrown in the mix.

1. The Grandmaster- Opening Fight Scene
Prior to the release I was prepared to have this movie at the top of every list I do this year, sadly Wong Kar Wai's epic film chronicling the legendary Ip Man fell apart after the first 20 minutes. But you know what? Those first 20 minutes make it worth it. To a true martial arts fan seeing a well choreographed, beautifully show fight scene is no different than anyone else watching a top level ballet. The way Wong Kar Wai captures the flow of movement throughout this entire opening scene make it one of the most breathtaking fight scenes I've seen to date. What really puts it over the top and earns it #1 over Snake Eyes V Storm Shadow is the striking use of black and white and the wonderfully artistic rainfall which both serve to extenuate the beauty of the martial art.

Jon M. Chu Re-Enlisting for "G.I. Joe 3'

When all was said and done, GI Joe: Retaliation wrapped up its run with a hefty $365M, surpassing the relatively disappointing haul of the 2009 film. Paramount has exactly two people to thank for the sequel's success: Dwayne Johnson and director Jon M. Chu. The Step Up filmmaker was a surprising choice to take over the film, but his familiarity with choreography paired with an obvious love of the toy and cartoon franchise went a long way, and now the studio wants to make sure he comes back for at least one more.

Chu is being sought to direct G.I. Joe 3, which was given the go ahead last spring after a strong $132M opening weekend. Meetings with screenwriters are being set up now, so this is still very early on in the process as a script will need to be hammered out. No word on whether Johnson will be returning but with his proven track record for pumping up franchises it seems like a no-brainer Paramount will throw some money his way. Hopefully the next shoot goes better than the last one, which saw the release date bumped nine months to add 3D and fix some of the issues test audiences found.

Sadly this probably puts the kibosh on Chu's Masters of the Universe film that has been in development forever. Hopefully when he's done with G.I. Joe that will be next on his list, rather than another Justin Bieber concert movie. [Deadline]

Snap Judgements Review- 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'

COBRA has taken over the White House and the Joes find themselves framed for assassinating a foreign ambassador in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, a sequel to 2009's 'The Rise of Cobra'. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, D.J. Cotrona, and Byung-hun Lee. Check out my Snap Judgements review below...

Say Yo Joe to more dough! Third 'G.I. Joe' film in the works

The proof is right there in black and white...and green. G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a hit, debuting to a worldwide haul of $132M, the second largest Easter opening in box office history. With numbers like that, a sequel was inevitable, and now Variety reports that the Joes and Cobra will slug it out in a third film to be shot in 3D.

Paramount has already given the film a thumbs up, a no-brainer considering the muscular $80M the film did overseas, coupled with a healthy $51M domestic. The irony is that 2009's The Rise of Cobra went with a more internationally diverse cast in order to court foreign markets, but it's the sequel that is on a course to outpace it substantially.  Factor in that the sequel only cost about $45M less than its predecessor and 'Retaliation' is a success in just about every measure, and that's without including what should be brisk business on the DVD/Blu-Ray market, not to mention toy sales for Hasbro.

The biggest winner of all may be Dwayne Johnson, who has been like a B12 shot for flagging franchises. He's proven to be box office gold, and with talk of him leading a Fast & Furious spinoff, he could be more in-demand than ever.

There are no plot details for what the next G.I. Joe film could entail, but producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura has expressed a desire to add even more ninja backstory, while also putting more emphasis on the interpersonal relationships among the Joes.  It also remains to be seen if Jon Chu will be back to direct, although one has to assume Paramount will want to keep as many pieces in place as possible.

Did you see G.I. Joe: Retaliation this weekend? John and Julian were split on it, while I'm going to check it out later today with a review to come shortly. Was it good enough to justify a threequel? And what would you like to see them cover the next time?

Julian's take: G.I. Joe Retaliation

So after the first live action Transformers movie came out and did gangbusters the next question from fans of Hasbro was when was there going to be a G.I. Joe movie. That was answered in 2009 with G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.  While it was successful financially it wasn’t much of a success in pleasing the audience, especially the diehard fans of the property. So they went back to the drawing board and got a new director, Jon Chu, to try and create something that didn’t look like a mash up of Halo and Call of Duty, but looked more like the Real American hero that was a huge hit in the 80s. What we get (after a yearlong delay) is G.I. Joe Retaliation; a really solid marriage of good action film making and fan service that was missing from the earlier movie.  This time we really get daring, highly trained special mission force fighting against a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world.

So G.I. Joe Retaliationstarts us off sometime after the events of Rise of Cobra with Cobra Commander and Destro in custody. The Joes, led by Duke (Channing Tatum) with his second in command Roadblock (the Rock) just having completed another successful mission in North Korea. With unrest happening in Pakistan the Joes are sent by the President to stop one of Pakistan’s nuclear warheads from being stolen. After the successful mission the Joes are attacked and all are killed, except for the three who manage to escape the assault. The attack on the Joes was initiated by the President who is actually Zartan a member of Cobra. He frames the Joe team as traitors blaming them for the assassination of the President of Pakistan. The remaining Joes; Roadblock, Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki) and Flint (DJ Cotrona) now have to find who attacked them, why and stop them.

So let’s be honest here, this movie is a made for fans of the property. It does, however, do so while still being a great explosive action movie. G.I. Joe Retaliation was like watching someone tell you a GI Joe story from memory that mixes up parts of the cartoons and comic books while using the toys to act the whole thing out. G.I. Joe Retaliation doesn't really try to explain everything that is happening or what the relationships between people are. That really works for a person who is a fan but not so much for much for the casual movie goer who is just planning on seeing the a new Rock/Channing Tatum action movie.

Another thing with this movie is that it seriously feels like you are watching two movies in one. While Snake Eyes is heavily promoted he very much has a separate plot line that loosely connects it to the main plot because of his rival Storm Shadow. It doesn't feel ham fisted, but it can be very confusing to any viewer. No matter how confusing it is, it’s still really cool to see a bunch of ninjas fighting each other on a snow covered mountain.  Surprisingly another good thing in this is the 3D conversion, which was the reason the film was delayed for almost a year. Time did them well since there was actual depth in scenes and fun ways of having thing fly at your face. Unlike a lot of movies that do this post conversion they really spent the time to do a pretty decent job of adding 3D to film.

Now you know what? This movie might not work for everyone. There really is not much of a real plot or character development going on here. Do the villains make sense? Well it depends, if you think a super villain terrorist organization with more resources than most of the nations of the world that can put things in space really needs to make sense. Another thing is this movie eschews the previous movie for the most part. So don’t go in looking to see a mention of any character you liked in that movie, because you are not getting it here. Overall this is a movie that makes you feel good and want to go and buy a bunch of toys and play GI Joe like it was 1984 again.

New Japanese 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' trailer; reshoots didn't add more Channing Tatum

It's coming out for real this time, right? One of the big shockers from last year was the sudden yanking of G.I. Joe: Retaliation off of Paramount's schedule, knocking it from June all the way down to March 2013. The reason given was to allow time for a 3D post-conversion, but rumors began to emerge that the real reason was to fix a major gripe from test audiences. Namely, the lack of presence by red-hot Channing Tatum was a big problem, and reshoots were ordered to rectify that. The worst kept secret around was that Tatum, one of the few to return from 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, gets sent to the great toybox in the sky early on.

During an interview with CraveOnline, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said that the reshoots had nothing to do with adding more of Tatum to the story...

di Bonaventura: “No, it’s not. That is a complete rumor. I don’t know where that started. Literally, Channing shot for - if I have it wrong, I’m off by an hour - four hours, five hours? So it wasn’t really about that at all.”

Not sure I buy it. On its face, there's little sense in killing off the most popular actor of a franchise trying to gain a foothold in a crowded market. Paramount aren't stupid. They've seen the numbers Tatum pulled in last year, and will want their piece of the action.

Meanwhile, the marketing for the film is in full swing again, and an awesome 40-second Japanese trailer just hit the web. It's basically non-stop adrenaline showcasing Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Lee Byung-hun, and Adrianne Palicki, but no Tatum.

Directed by Jon Chu, G.I. Joe: Retaliation finally hits on March 29th. [CBM]

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' reshoots will feature more Channing Tatum

Paramount has had nothing but trouble with their G.I. Joe franchise so far. The 2010 film was directed by Stephen Sommers, and with the nostalgia craze in full swing, plus a big name star in Channing Tatum, it should have been a surefire hit. And yet it wasn't, despite making just over $300M. That's what happens when a franchise flick costs over $200M. With that one mostly going down the drain, they still eagerly jumped into a sequel, feeling confident in the direction of Jon Chu and the additions of Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson to help bring in the big bucks. With the film just a few weeks away from opening, the Internet cracked in half when Paramount announced suddenly that G.I. Joe: Retaliation was being bumped to March 29th 2013, with the reason given that they just wanted to a little 3D post-conversion.

Hey, it makes sense. The film would have been an afterthought in this crowded summer season, and 3D would certainly add the value of higher ticket prices. Johnson came out the next day and said that reshoots were definitely taking place, and now we're learning from Deadline that those scenes aren't just to take advantage of the technology, but to fix what test audiences say is a glaring weakness in the story.

Apparently, Paramount got a little worried when audiences noted that they wanted to see more of Tatum and Johnson on screen together, and is rushing back to fix that right now. Oh, and they also add that audiences wanted 3D, which to me sounds like hogwash. Whatever. Anyway, clearly it's a move that makes sense from a business perspective. It's been one of the worst kept secrets that Tatum's Duke character would be taking a dirt nap in the the first few minutes, which was a surprise considering his popularity. The combination of Johnson, Willis, and Tatum makes for a powerful trio with a lot of box office pull.

It's clear that Paramount has made some colossal missteps with the film, but they're going out of their way to fix that. They don't want to see another big budget flop like Battleship or John Carter. Fortunately, G.I. Joe isn't nearly as expensive as those films were. I expect that the sequel will be in a much better position to succeed when it finally opens next year.

The question now is how this will effect Tatum's character? Will he not be killed off now? Maybe he'll simply be captured or presumed dead only to return later? Surely they aren't going to completely write off the guy after he's had a pair of $100M+ grossing hits this year already, with another one potentially in Magic Mike?

Dwayne Johnson confirms 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' reshoots

This whole thing with G.I. Joe: Retaliation getting bumped by Paramount into next year is a never ending story, it seems. One of the big items of contention is extreme length of time the studio is taking for what should be a fairly simple process of converting the film into 3D. While nobody wants a hasty four week process that produces muddy crap like with Clash of the Titans, nine months is a hell of a long time. Now we know what's up, courtesy of Dwayne Johnson's Twitter page, where he states that reshoots are taking place to make the best use of the technology. Makes sense...

Jon Chu, who did a bang up job with the format in the otherwise horrible Step Up 3D, should be able to find a way to do the same here. I certainly have more faith in him to do it than Stephen Sommers, who directed the previous film to middling success. It's still a lot of time just for a few reshoots, so I'm guessing there will be some other tinkering taking place as well. Johnson will be joined by Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Rza, Adrianne Palicki, DJ Cotrona, Ray Park, Lee Byung-hun, Ray Stevenson, and Elodie Yung. You can now expect the film to open on March 29th 2013. Yo Joe!

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' bumped to March 2013

Well I don't think anyone saw this coming, although it makes sense in retrospect. Just a few weeks before Paramount was set to hit us with their revamped sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, they've decided to kick the film nine months to March 29th 2013. Why? Well the reason given is so they can convert the film into 3D and boost global sales.

But wait, isn't nine months a long time for a simple conversion? Of course it is, so it has to be something more, and the real reason is that it would have gotten trounced this summer. Even with Jon Chu coming aboard to direct, and adding Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson to the cast, it would have been lost going up against The Amazing Spider-Man, Prometheus, and The Dark Knight Rises. This move ensures it'll have a much smoother ride next year.

So sorry those of you were waiting to watch Channing Tatum get blasted into smithereens in the first five minutes of the film. You can go have a kid or something during the gap. [Deadline]

Ninjas ninjas and more ninjas in the latest 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' trailer!

Didn't we JUST get a new trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation yesterday? Oh? It was two trailers? What the hell? Well here's one more of the international variety, which includes some of the same scenes but includes at least 90% more ninjas.

The ninja aspect is one that has G.I. Joe has incorporated into the militaristic storyline fairly well for decades, with almost all of it centering on the rivalry between Snake-Eyes and the (mostly) evil Storm Shadow. Over the years more ninjas were added into the mix, and occasionally you'd get an episode or an issue of G.I. Joe that felt more like a Shaw Brothers flick than about the United States' elite military unit. Jon Chu, has decided to mix up the sequel a little bit by figuring martial arts into the equation far more than the previous flick, and as you can see in this trailer that means ninjas up the friggin' wazoo. We even get ninjas battling on mountains and crazy crap like that.

As for the plot? Cobra infiltrates the White House, impersonates the President(played by the always welcome Jonathan Pryce), Firefly(Ray Stevenson) can blow stuff up real good, Bruce Willis shows up, Dwayne Johnson has big muscles, the day is saved. Something like that, anyway. G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits theaters on June 29th. Enjoy....

Two new trailers for 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'!

If we're going solely on the creative and box office energy Dwayne Johnson brought to Fast Five and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, then Paramount may be on the verge of one of the summer's biggest hits. Along with director Jon Chu(Step Up 3), Johnson is one of the key reasons why G.I. Joe: Retaliation looks to have a greater shot at finding the success that mostly eluded 2010's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Two new trailers have emerged, and they give us the best look at the story, which we've known involves Zartan and Cobra infiltrating the White House and taking over the office of President. There's some manly jawing between Johnson and Bruce Willis, who are clearly the big headliners for the sequel. And what about Channing Tatum's Duke character? Well, it looks like we get the most definitive proof yet that he'll be sent to that big toyline in the sky. At least until the film is a hit and he can come back in a future film as a brainwashed member of Cobra or something.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is due to open on June 29th. Check out the two new trailers below....[RopesofSilicon/Digital Spy]

Lots of people pointing guns in new photos from 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'

G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens on June 29th, and as that date rapidly approaches we're starting to hear bits and pieces from folks who have attended some of the test screenings. What we've heard so far is that Paramount is testing two versions of the film, each with a different ending. Since this is what is likely the middle chapter of a trilogy, I expect that both will end with Cobra coming out on top. We'll see how that all shakes out, but for now we've got a bunch of new photos featuring lots of Mexican standoffs, a new shot of Flint(DJ Cotrona), and Lady Jaye(Adrianne Palicki) rockin' a smokin' red dress. Still no Channing Tatum, and I'm convinced more than ever that Duke dies a grisly death pretty early on. We'll see....

New image of Bruce Willis as the original Joe in 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'

Is it possible that Channing Tatum gets killed off in the first few minutes of G.I. Joe: Retaliation? We know his Duke character is back, one of the few to re-enlist after 2010's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Yet we haven't seen any photos of him yet, while we've had multiple of Dwayne Johnson, who is clearly the new face(or eyebrow) of the whole thing.

Another shot has been released and it features the old man of the crew, Bruce Willis, taking aim as General Joe Colton, the original G.I. Joe. This looks like a simple expansion of the Adrianne Palicki image we got a couple of days ago, as she's in the background locked and loaded.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is due to open on June 29th.

A handful of new character images from 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'

If we were to judge based solely on the released photos, it would look like The Avengers are set to get their asses kicked by G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The Avengers images are so boring we don't even bother to post them here anymore, but the G.I. Joe ones are always action packed. Even a still image of Snake-Eyes has more energy than another one of Thor grimacing at a computer panel. The newly released shots from the Jon Chu directed sequel show Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Adrianne Palicki looking hot and on target as Lady Jaye, and Elodie Yung(The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Jinx.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Elodie Yung, Rza, Ray Park, Lee Byung-hun, Ray Stevenson, and DJ Cotrona. Look for it to hit theaters on June 29th.

New image from G.I. Joe: Retaliation!

After last night's awesome TV spot for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, this image from the action packed sequel may be a bit of a downer. It shows Dwayne Johnson looking mean and muscular as Roadblock, holding what must be a pretty tense meeting alongside the original joe, General Joseph Colton, played by a rather frail looking Bruce Willis. And since I'd know those headlights anywhere, that's clearly Adrienne Palicki as Lady Jaye.  One thing we haven't seen much of in the trailers, TV spots, or images? Channing Tatum as Duke. It's almost like he's been shunted off the the background even though he's one of the few to re-enlist.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation also stars Rza, Ray Park, Lee Byung-hun, Ray Stevenson, DJ Cotrona, Elodie Yung, and Joseph Mazzello. Jon Chu is directing, with the film set to storm theaters on June 29th.

Full 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Super Bowl TV spot

This came out a few days ago but it's such a kick ass spot it's worth revisiting. Other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson quoting Jay-Z, G.I. Joe: Retaliation looks simply incredible. I know it may be hard to believe, but 'Joe' is a remarkably hard franchise to get right. You can look to a number of failed comic books and cartoons for evidence. Even the first film by Stephen Sommers, while better than expected, had it's share of flaws. G.I. Joe is a weird mix of military action and a deep kung fu lore that is hard to get just right. Jon Chu, a director who has had a long love for the franchise, appears to have just said "F**k it" and threw everything against the wall to see what sticks. Y'know what? That might be the right idea.

So we got Snake Eyes fighting ninjas on a mountain, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis trading macho tough guy talk, and a look at Cobra Commander which should help us all forget how terrible he was in the last film.  I can't wait for this! Check out the full Super Bowl spot for G.I. Joe: Retaliation below, and mark your calendars for June 29th....

Trailer Time: G.I. Joe: Retaliation, starring Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum

So the new trailer for GI Joe: Retaliation is almost perfect. If you're a GI Joe fan, that is, and you recognize what diehard Joe fan, Jon Chu, is trying to pull off here. GI Joe has always been more than just a paramilitary unit, as it's as much about kung fu and ninja culture as anything else. Sometimes it's a mix that works, as with guys like Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, other times it flat out sucks and you get Cobra Commander's son inexplicably trained as a ninja.Whatever the case, the martial arts aspect is one of the things that has kept GI Joe fresh all these years, and this film is going whole hog on that aspect.

That said, Dwayne Johnson won't be doing any jumpkicks anytime soon, and neither will the returning Channing Tatum. Chu seems to be pulling out all of the stops, and there are a number of cool sequences already, like Cobra draping their flag over the White House? Priceless. Or a ninja battle on the side of a mountain!!?!?! And how about that Bruce Willis intro. So friggin' sweet. Ok, I'm gushing. GI Joe: Retaliation  opens on June 29th. Check out the trailer for yourself below. Yo Joe!

1st look at Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Roadblock in GI Joe 2: Retaliation

Some might say there's absolutely no reason to waste time with another G.I. Joe film after the polarizing response response to the first. To those people I only need point you to the above image, signifying the on-set presence of the most electric man in sports entertainment: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The eybrow raising, pie eating brahma bull tweeted that shooting on the Jon Chu directed sequel, G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation, has finally begun in the sweltering desert heat...

"1st day of shooting. 110 degrees. Bring It.”

The Rock will star as the Joes' heavy machine gunner, Roadblock. He'll be joined by the returning Channing Tatum, Ray Park, and Lee Byung-Hun. Rza, DJ Cotrona, Ray Stevenson, Adrienne Palicki and Bruce Willis make up a small part of the new enlistees.  G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation is set to hit theaters on June 29th 2012! Yo Joe!

Bruce Willis officially in talks for GI Joe: Retaliation

Why do I love Bruce Willis so much? Because while some of the more outwardly eccentric actors may make some oddball film choices, Willis appears to be a regular dude who delights in making film's that are completely unexpected. It's impossible to predict what he'll do next. He can star in a piece of crap straight-to-DVD movie alongside 50 Cent and it doesn't affect him at all. The guy is untouchable.

Last month it was first reported that Willis was being eyed for a role as the original Joe, General Joe Colton, in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to 2009's hit film about the paramilitary outfit locked in a global war against the COBRA terrorist organization.  There wasn't much more to the story then, and just how deep the pursuit for Willis went wasn't really clear. Well now we know that Willis isn't just being looked at for the film, he's in final negotiations for it, according to Heatvision.

I'll say this, Paramount really wants to make this sequel better than the first, and if the cast is any indication it definitely will be. Jon Chu(Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) is directing. Channing Tatum, Ray Park, and Lee Byung-Hun are the only ones returning. Dwayne Johnson, Adrienne Palicki, Elodie Yung, Rza, DJ Cotrona, Joseph Mazzello, and Ray Stevenson make up the new faces.
