Sure Shots: George Clooney; The Duelist; Alice in Wonderland

* While George Clooney continues to earn raves for his work in front of the camera, it's the choices he continues to make behind it that are drawing my attention, due to his tendency to push the envelope and confront tough issues. His Smokehouse Pictures is set to team with Sony on a film centered on The Smothers Brothers, the button-pushing, controversial pair who pissed off more than a few folks in the 1960s with The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The script is being prepped by Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman, and based on the novel Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.  No word on if Clooney will star or direct at this point, but I can definitely see him doing the latter, and perhaps guesting in a small role. * There's nothing cooler than a movie about gunfights. Just two bad ass gunslingers, a pair of pistols, and a clock at high friggin' noon. It's why a movie like The Quick and the Dead will forever be great. So this idea sounds awesome to me. Ben C. Lucas(Wasted on the Young) will direct The Duelist, based on a spec script by Shawn Linden and rewritten by Lane Shadgett. The story is set in an underground world of gunfights, with the typical themes of honor, betrayal, and bloodshed.  Casting begins soon, with filming to begin some time next year. [Variety]

* The final film to bear the name of late director Ken Russell will be a remake of 1976's adult themed Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy. A remake was being planned with Russell co-writing the script along with the original film's producer, Bill Osco. Russell had been planning to direct, but now the search is on for a replacement and additional financing. The film was serve as a posthumous tribute to Russell, who passed away last month. The original "Alice" was made for $500,000 and earned over $90M, making it one of the most successful adult films ever. [Variety]
