Beautiful new trailer for 'Tatsumi', based on Yoshihiro Tatsumi's award winning autobiography

Singapore's failed entry for this year's Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award was the animated Tatsumi, based on the Eisner award winning autobiographical manga from Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Titled A Drifting Life, the two-volume manga series was released in 2008, and follows Tatsumi's attempts to become a comics artist in post-WWII occupied Japan. He would later become known as the inventor of gekiga, which is a more serious, adult oriented form of manga.

Eric Khoo, who had made the transition from comics artist to film director, began developing the film with Tatsumi's permission back in 2009, and based on the newly released English version of the trailer, he's sticking close to the source material as inspiration for the animation style. It's simply gorgeous, with parts of it reminding me of Waltz with Bashir, and others of Persepolis.

Tatsumi made a big splash at last year's Cannes Film Festival, and won the Best Film award in Dubai, but as of now there's no planned release here in the United States. If it does well in the UK when it opens on May 13th, hopefully that will change. Check out the gorgeous trailer for Tatsumi below...
