Matt Damon, Gus Van Sant drama lands at Universal

One thing you never want to do is piss Matt Damon off. Why? Because he'll make your studio persona non grata with the quickness. Take for instance the way he so easily walked away from Universal Pictures and the popular and extremely lucrative Bourne franchise. Gotta keep him happy, dudes. What Damon was planning was to make his directorial debut in a film co-written by and starring John Krasinski. However, Damon's filming of Neill Blomkamp's Elysium was holding things up, so he turned the directing duties over to his long-time pal, Gus Van Sant.  Smooth move.

That wasn't the end of the story, though. Warner Brothers decided to pass on the still untitled film, which we know follows a pair of rival corporate execs(Damon and Krasinski) who arrive in a small town only to have one's entire life thrown into question. The studio may have gotten cold feet, but Universal doesn't seem all that concerned. Vulture reports they've entered talks to scoop up the $15M project, likely as a means of building bridges with Damon.

It makes sense. Universal will want to get Damon back into the fold, even if he decides not to do another Bourne flick. It'll be a small price to pay for one of the most bankable stars on the planet who can be the front for any type of movie. Filming could begin as soon as April if the deal falls into place.
