Edgar Ramirez and Melissa Leo find 'Joy'; 'Kickboxer' Adds Gina Carano

David O. Russell's biopic on single mother-turned-entrepreneur Joy Mangano is beginning to round into shape. Not only has the previously-rumored Bradley Cooper been confirmed to rejoin Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro in the film, but also Edgar Ramirez (Deliver Us from Evil) is joining the cast. Not only that, but Melissa Leo is in talks to play Mangano's mother.  Lawrence stars as Mangano, a single mother of three who struck it big by inventing the "Miracle Mop", selling it and other inventions on Home Shopping Network. Ramirez will play Mangano's ex-husband, Tony Miranne. Leo won an Oscar the last time she worked with Russell, winning for her supporting role in The Fighter. Joy begins filming in February.

Gina Carano in the Kickboxer remake? Makes perfect sense. Gina Carano not kicking ass, though, is just plain stupid. The Fast Six and Haywire actress will join original star Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dave Bautista, Georges St. Pierre, Sara Malakul Lane, and Alain Moussi in the film about an American who enters the brutal world of Muay Thai kickboxing to avenge his brother's murder at the hands of champion, Tong Po. Carano will play a fight promoter described by producers as "a sneaky and dangerous temptress".

Dave Bautista and Gina Carano Join Robert De Niro in 'Bus 657'

One was a professional wrestler who dominated the WWE and tried his hand at MMA. The other was one of MMA's top stars. Dave Bautista and Gina Carano have come pretty far since their days grappling in the ring and squared circle; he's one of the breakout stars in Guardians of the Galaxy while she was recently in Fast & Furious 6. Now they'll get to work with screen legend Robert De Niro in Bus 657, which frankly sounds like the kind of crap we hoped De Niro was done with.

Bautista and Carano, along with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kate Bosworth, have come aboard the Scott Mann-directed film which "centers on a father (Morgan) without the means to pay for his daughter’s medical treatment. As a last resort, he partners with a greedy co-worker (Bautista) to rob a casino and the two hijack a bus full of hostages and things go awry. De Niro is casino owner Frank "The Pope", Carano is a police officer chasing down the bus, and Bosworth is Frank's estranged daughter. Oi.

There had been rumblings of Bautista returning to the WWE soon but with filming on Bus 657 taking place next month that doesn't seem likely. [Deadline]

Review: 'In the Blood' Starring Gina Carano and Cam Gigandet

Chances are if John Stockwell is the guy directing the movie, it means some unsuspecting American tourist is about to have the worst beach vacation ever. That trend continues with the Caribbean action flick, In the Blood, but his star is no shrinking violet unable to fend off her attackers. Instead it's MMA star-turned-movie bad ass Gina Carano, in her first solo lead role since Haywire. When she's doing her thing, namely cracking a few skulls, the film is a fun, gritty throwback. But when the action slows down and the seams in the story start to show, you'll be tapping out for it to end.
There's a reason why Soderbergh, in another fit of mad genius, selected Carano to head up Haywire in her debut acting role. She's not only a physical force of nature, bending her screen foes into pretzels with ease, but she's also quite the beauty and someone who has a natural presence. However, she needs to trade in a few of those gym hours for a few more acting lessons. She's not awful, but showing any hint of vulnerability remains an issue, and that's a problem when playing a newly-married woman whose husband (Cam Gigandet) has just been kidnapped from their Caribbean honeymoon.

Through grainy footage that might have been shot on somebody's spare IPhone, we are introduced to a young Ava (Carano), whose father (Stephen Lang) is murdered right in front of her eyes. But before that he was a rough-houser who taught her how to fight. It also got her into a lot of trouble with the law, and years later when she weds Derek (Gigandet), his wealthy family is none too happy about having her around. When a local offers to take the newly couple out to show them night life, they hit a swanky night club, only to have Ava do some hitting of her own when a crime boss played by Danny Trejo gets a little too frisky. So for a brief moment we get Carano vs. Machete, until she lays waste to the entire club. A zip lining excursion over a deadly gulf goes wrong the next day when Derek's equipment fails. Crashing from the incredible height, he's picked up by the EMTs and promptly kidnapped, forcing Ava to contend with the corrupt cops (led by Luis Guzman) and sleazy armed goons(Amaury Nelasco at his scuzziest) to get him back.

It's all pretty standard stuff that Stockwell occasionally spruces up with some adventurous camerawork. But then again, it's tough to screw up shooting in the lush Puerto Rican locale. When Carano is given free reign to break a few bones, you never want to look away. She's got such a great combination of speed, power, and looks that her mere presence can, albeit briefly, overcome the script's many flaws. There are simply no surprises here and fewer stakes, since we never feel for a moment that Ava is in any danger of losing. It's also more than a little confounding that Carano isn't asked to do more fighting when clearly that's why anybody is watching this film to begin with. Hello, we want to see her beating folks up, not talking through her problems.

In the Blood doesn't totally make use of Carano's physical talents, and her acting still needs some work, but when she's allowed to cut loose it makes for a solid old school action flick. Here's hoping Carano's next leading role gives her a little more to work with.

Gina Carano Goes Haywire in First 'In the Blood' Trailer

When Steven Soderbergh sees enough to entrust you with the lead in one of his films, it's a pretty big deal. Some have done more with that opportunity than others (come on, Sasha Grey! Really!?), one who has taken the ball and run with it is Gina Carano. After making for an impressive debut beating up A-list stars in Haywire, she went on to beat up a few more in Fast & Furious 6. And now she does it yet again in the first trailer for In the Blood.

Directed by John Stockwell (Blue Crush, Into the Blue), this is a straight-up brawler flick that has Carano busting heads on an island paradise, seemingly the only locale Stockwell prefers. Carano plays the wife to Cam Gigandet, and she's forced to rescue him when he's kidnapped during their honeymoon. Somewhere along the way she uncovers a grand conspiracy, and perhaps she'll find her husband's manhood, too.

In the Blood "hits" theaters on April 4th.

New Posters for 'The Raid 2', 'Noah', and 'In the Blood'

With only a little over a month until The Raid 2: Berandal is unleashed on an unsuspecting populace, Gareth Evans has released a cool new poster for the film. The Raid: Redemption pretty much left me a drooling mess it was so awesome, but the sequel is on a whole other level. In my review I call it one of the "great sequels in recent history" and it's no exaggeration. Iko Uwais is back as Rama, and this time he's forced to go even deeper into the criminal underworld, which only means he's got a longer way to fight back out. The Raid 2: Berandal opens on March 28th 2014.

Although some religious groups have already decided to turn up their nose at Darren Aronofsky's Noah because some website told them to, the marketing blitz continues on with the release of new character posters. The images feature co-stars Emma Watson, Douglas Booth, and Anthony Hopkins. Russell Crowe stars as the titular Biblical figure who built a massive ark to save his family from God's watery wrath. Opening on March 28th (The Raid 2 vs. Noah? Unfair!), Noah co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, and Logan Lerman.

Gina Carano showed she can do a little more than just break bones in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, but let's face it, we really just want to see her beat people up. And after doing just that in Fast & Furious 6, she'll crack skulls in action flick In the Blood. Directed by John Stockwell, who has made a living off gorgeous surf locale flicks like Blue Crush and Into the Blue, he again hits a sunny paradise for a story that centers on a wife fighting to rescue her husband, kidnapped during their Caribbean honeymoon. Carano plays the butt-kicking spouse, naturally, with Cam Gigandet as her husband. Danny Trejo, Luis Guzman, and Stephen Lang co-star when In the Blood opens April 4th.

Gina Carano joins the female 'Expendables' flick

Even though she's only had one leading role in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, and audiences largely ignored it, there's no doubt that Gina Carano is the female action star of the future. Hollywood has noticed it, too, which is why she's currently filming Fast & Furious 6, and will star in the genre film In the Blood. Just last month we learned of producer Adi Shankar's plan to develop an all-female version of The Expendables, and Carano would make for an obvious pick for it. So obvious, in fact, that she's the first to officially sign on.

Shankar will be producing the film through his 1984 Private Defense Contractors label, with a script by Dutch Southern. We don't know any plot details yet, but if its anything like the dude Expendables it won't really matter. Crap gets blown up, evil foreign guys get filled with holes while somebody makes a really bad gallows joke.  Carano has shown already she has a nice balance of physicality, sexuality, and humor so she makes for a solid #1 draft pick. Shankar's pretty excited about it...

Shankar: "I don't know how I'm supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of 'The Expendables' without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba."

Welcome to "Really Bad Analogies" starring Adi Shankar. Anyway, Shankar is aiming for all the ladies you'd expect for a film like this: Kate Beckinsale, Milla Jojovich, Michelle Rodriguez, and more. So expect to hear something new soon. [Variety]

Dwayne Johnson and Gina Carano on the set of 'Fast Six'

*UPDATE* Here's another shot of Johnson with Gal Gadot, and damn she's lookin' fine! Some guys have all the luck.*

This is just something I found really cool. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the most active stars on Twitter, and you can always count on him to give his fans an inside look at every production he's a part of. He's currently filming Fast Six, which sees him returning to the role of DSS agent Luke Hobbs, and now he's tweeted a new set photo of himself with his co-star, Gina Carano.

Kinda makes me wonder if the ex-WWE superstar and the MMA grappler ever got into any wrestling matches on set? Think he gave her the People's Elbow? Carano will play a member of Hobbs' team, who again are tracking down Dominic Toretto(Vin Diesel) and his crew as they attempt a major European heist. Other new additions to the cast include Luke Evans as the villain, martial artist Joe Taslim, and model Clara Paget.

Fast Six is directed by Justin Lin and hits theaters on May 24th 2013.

'Haywire' star Gina Carano to star in action flick, ''In the Blood'

Steven Soderbergh struck gold when he found MMA star Gina Carano and immediately cast her to lead his revenge thriller, Haywire. She was a breath of fresh air to a role that normally only somebody like Angelina Jolie would even be considered for, and Carano not only showed her physicality but an ability to hold her own opposite heavyweights like Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, and Michael Douglas. Thankfully, the film's disappointing box office hasn't caused studios to think twice about casting her, as she's just landed the lead in an action film from John Stockwell.

Stockwell is probably best known for his aquatic films Blue Crush and Into the Blue, or the forgettable vacation horror, Turistas. He'll direct In the Blood, starring Carano as a wife who desperately tracks down the men who kidnapped her husband while they're vacationing in the Caribbean. Presumably she'll kick a little ass along the way, as Stockwell informed THR that the film will showcase her fighting and acting abilities.  The script comes from Bennett Yallin and James Robert Johnston(The Howling: Reborn).

The film is being described as being in the vein of Taken, which should suit Carano perfectly, and let's face it, she'll be a damn sight more fun to watch than old Liam Neeson doddering through another brawl. That combined with Stockwell's typically gorgeous cinematography could make this a film worth getting excited over. Production could begin in late spring or early summer in Puerto Rico.
