'Run All Night' with Liam Neeson and Joel Kinnaman in New Trailer

Depending on how much money gets thrown at Liam Neeson in the next few months Taken 3 (my review here) may or may not be the last time we see him beat guys into pulp as Bryan Mills. But even if it is there will be plenty of chances to watch Neeson as the tough guy. He'll get to do it all over again in the fast-paced thriller Run All Night, and after the first images debuted earlier this week the trailer has now arrived.

Reteaming with his Unknown and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra, Neeson stars in Run All Night as a mob enforcer who murders a mob boss' son and must protect his own (Joel Kinnaman) from retaliation. Ed Harris chews up some scenery as the capo who wants to put Neeson's son in the ground, and judging by this footage he pulls out all the stops to do it. While we can make fun of Neeson for making the same kind of action flicks over and over again, this one has a touch more style than the rest and at least appears to be moving at a much faster pace.  We'll see.

Run All Night hits the streets on April 17th.

First Look at Liam Neeson in 'Run All Night'; Joins 'The Escapist' Remake

This weekend Liam Neeson will do his thing, namely playing an old guy beating up younger dudes in Taken 3, but he's taken to playing the tough guy in other films. In fact, it's getting hard to tell one Neeson role from the next, and certainly the photos and trailers are starting to blend together. Speaking of which, some new images from Neeson's next action flick, Run All Night, have now been released. And not only that, but Neeson has signed on to be the badass in a remake of Rupert Wyatt's breakout feature, The Escapist.

First up, Neeson has agreed to star in an American remake of Wyatt's prison thriller, The Escapist, which starred Brian Cox as a prison inmate who formulates a plan to escape and see his sick daughter. Wyatt may be known now as the guy who directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Gambler, but it was on The Escapist that he first drew attention. Sean O'Keefe will pen the screenplay while Wyatt will stick around as a producer. So far there's no word on a director but it shouldn't take Legendary Pictures long to find one.

Perhaps they'll try to reteam Neeson with director Jaume Collet-Serra, who he's worked with three times already on Unknown, Non-Stop and on his next film, Run All Night. New images from the thriller show Neeson and co-stars Joel Kinnaman and Ed Harris. Taking place over the course of 24 hours, the story has Neeson as a mob hitman known as "the Gravedigger" who must protect his son when he witnesses a mob slaying. Also starring Common, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Beau Knapp, Run All Night opens February 6th.

Review: 'Robocop' Starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, and Gary Oldman

Dead or alive, you're getting a reboot. Long in the works and desired by absolutely nobody, the remake of Paul Verhoeven's satirical sci-fi actioner Robocop has been dreaded by those who feared it would lack the teeth of the original. But what will come as a surprise to those who have prematurely mocked it and all of the early images of star Joel Kinnaman's robo bat-suit, is that the film is forward thinking enough to have some big ideas while also providing a solid dose of violent justice.

While not as progressive as Verhoeven's effort, this one crafted by Elite Squad director Jose Padilha is certainly a product of today's drone warfare culture and the dominance of the military industrial complex. Like its predecessor, the message is obvious, current, and delivered with enough humor that the general lack of character doesn't totally shut down the system.

In the not-so-distant future, nearly the entire world has turned to the use of militarized drones for law enforcement and military tactics. Weaponized droids stalk the streets of Tehran while the citizens live under what is later described as "the illusion of free will".  There is an obvious anti-drone rebellion out there causing a ruckus, but here in the United States drones have been strictly forbidden, a fact which continues to gall OmniCorp CEO, Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton), who hopes to bring it here. But despite the efforts of bloviating Bill O'Reilly-esque propaganda artist Pat Novak (of the hilariously-named The Novak Element), Congress refuses to pass a bill allowing the use of drones on American soil. This is satire in the pure Verhoeven mold because you can turn on the TV right now and see guys just like Novak spouting the same sort of fact-free rubbish; pumping their patriotic chests while deeming their enemies terrorists or cowards.

Turns out what the people want is a robot with a human touch, a droid that knows right from wrong. And so OmniCorp finds the perfect test subject in Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), a lean and brave Detroit detective with the courage to fight corruption within his own ranks. When Murphy's investigations get him blown up by a car bomb, leaving his body devastated, his wife (Abbie Cornish) agrees to sign him over to OmniCorp in hopes of saving his life. "What kind of life will he have?” she asks, not knowing that it will be a life of steel exo-skins and prime directives. His transformation begins in earnest, led by the ethically-ambiguous Dr. Norton (Gary Oldman) and cheered by Sellars who just wants a marketable product. As Alex comes to grips with being a walking cyborg, including a powerful moment where he sees what his body really looks like, he's left to wonder if the man he used to be exists underneath the armor and programming.

Padilha, who directed the intense Elite Squad cop flicks, works around the PG-13 and delivers some top notch video game action, including a brilliantly kinetic sequence lit only by the flash of blast rifle fire. The Robocop side of things isn't the issue; it's the Alex Murphy side where Joshua Zetumer loses focus. There simply isn't enough to distinguish Murphy beyond his good looks, and everything involving his brothers in blue (including Michael K. Williams as his former partner) is undeveloped. The same goes for his family life which mostly seems like a component nobody wanted to deal, in favor of getting back to the shenanigans over at OmniCorp. And truth be told, the biggest ideas and the best characters are all from the corporate powerhouse. Jay Baruchel gets geeky as a sniveling marketing guru, while Jennifer Ehle and Jackie Earle Haley make for a particularly devious roundtable of henchman for Keaton to play off of.  Kinnaman doesn't really hold up against such a strong supporting cast, but he finds occasional moments of genuine heartbreak in Murphy's interactions with his son, who looks up to Dad as a hero.

Verhoeven's prior films have proved especially popular territory for remakes of late, with the stink of Total Recall still wafting in the air. So it's good to see that someone put some actual thought into making Robocop cool and contemporary, rather than it being just another generic reboot in an empty robotic suit.

Win Passes to See 'Robocop' Before It's Released!

Regardless of how you feel about remakes, the trailers for the biggest film for the first part of 2014 have piqued the interest of almost all of us. I'll be the first to admit eating humble pie. Robocop, the 1987 version, is one of the movies that started my interested in the medium...so to say I was worried is probably an understatement. With each piece of media released, the promise of this version's cred increases.

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years, but have been forbidden for law enforcement in America. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance to build a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine.
We are happy to offer 30 lucky readers admit-two passes to see Robocop before it's released. First and foremost you need to be a fan of the PDC facebook page. Then send an email to punchdrunkcritics@gmail.com with what you think is the most important thing Robocop needs to have to make you a fan!

The screening will take place at 7PM on Monday, February 10th at the AMC in Georgetown. Please make sure you can attend before you enter. Good luck!

THIS CONTEST WILL END ON FEBRUARY, 5TH 2013. WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY AFTER. THANKS!

New Clip from 'Robocop' See Murphy's First Field Test

It's so hard to accept a different incarnation of something that you hold a great deal of love for. I'm not here to blow smoke up your tailpipe about how I love the classic 80's film because of the political subtext...nope, I'm one of those guys that loved Robo's ability to create new holes in the bodies of bad guys, plain and simple. Yeah, the rest of it was cool and allowed my older self to continue my now 20 year long love affair with cyborg law enforcement but it was the action that sold my ticket. So needless to saw the bar I've set for Jose Padilaha attempt to recapture that magic is slightly lower than others, but with every clip I see a movie that is that much closer to making itself a worthy competitor. Will it surpass Robocop the original? Nah, no chance but Robocop 2 and 3 better watch out (who am I kidding Robocop 3 was as bad as Superman IV).

This new clip shows Robo's first controlled live fire field test....a welcome change from OCP's previous practice of debuting new and untested military grade weaponry in a boardroom (I'm looking at you ED-209). Not that we didn't know this already but this new Robo seems quite a bit more agile than his predecessor, it also confirms that he is less of a mindless robot fighting for his humanity and more of a resurrected human with cybernetic upgrades. There is no digitized voice or responses that sound pre-programmed, honestly he seems less cyborg and more modern day Matt Damon from Elysium. Regardless of the eventual venom spit by fanboys everywhere about how "inferior" this is to the original it looks to me like Padilaha has at least managed to put together a fun action flick that will strike all of the right chords with the 12 year old in all of us.

"Crime Has a New Enemy"- 'Robocop' Delivers New Trailer, Poster, and Images

While the previous trailers for the Robocop remake have impressively sold the film's sizzle, perhaps in an effort to win over those who are still highly skeptical about it, there's more to the story than just a robot cop meting out his brand of justice. There's also the story of Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) outside of the metal suit, and the impact his becoming Robocop has on his familyi.

The latest trailer takes a more melancholic tone than we've seen before, showing Murphy's wife Clara (Abbie Cornish) sadly agreeing to turn his body over for research. We know where that leads, right into the lab of a scientist played by Gary Oldman, who transforms Murphy into the titular cyborg hero, although it seems to come with considerable reflection about the nature of such an existence.  There's still plenty of action, though, and it's good to see a bit more of Jackie Earle Haley as the guy who trains Robocop to be a bad ass.

Directed by Jose Padilha, Robocop hits the streets in IMAX on February 12th.

First Trailer for 'Robocop' Remake Starring Joel Kinnaman and Samuel L. Jackson

There's already been a lot made of Jose Padilha's remake of Paul Verhoeven's satirical sci-fi flick, Robocop. Many have chosen to cynically bash the film without seeing much other than a few set photos, while others rightly worry about the tone that will be struck, and whether Joel Kinnaman is the right guy for the lead. Nobody wants this to turn out like the Total Recall remake, which by most accounts was an unmitigated disaster. Well after months of speculation, the questions are beginning to be answered with the release of the very first trailer.

The footage at Comic-Con dug a bit deeper into the modern day parallels of drone warfare and military propaganda, but this trailer does a pretty good job of setting things up. Kinnaman plays cop and family man Alex Murphy, whose body is destroyed in an explosion, and subsequently is rebuilt as the cyborg defender of justice. We get a look at Abbie Cornish as Murphy's wife, as well as Gary Oldman as the scientist who designed Robocop, and Michael Keaton as a slimy corporate exec. And then there are snippets of Samuel L. Jackson delivering one of his famous fire 'n brimstone monologues as a media figure pushing the Robocop program.

Some obvious nods to Verhoeven's film are on display, including a model that looks almost exactly like the original Robocop, while there are some new touches like the redesigned ED-209 and the ability for Robocop to show his face. The big question is whether or not the obvious political themes are going to mesh with the need for big action. Even though we know how the story will play out for the most part, the trailer does seem to give a lot away.

Robocop opens on February 7th 2014.

'Thor', 'Captain America', and 'Spider-Man' Sequels Headed to Comic-Con

Just as Marvel reinvented Hollywood's approach to superhero movies, they've also upped the ante for panel presentations at San Diego Comic-Con. Last year, their Hall H presentation was one major announcement after another, with the first footage from Iron Man 3 debuting, the reveal of Ant-Man along with some test footage, plus Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Thor and Captain America sequels. Variety has confirmed that Marvel will be back in Hall H again this year on Saturday July 20th, and they'll be bringing a good chunk of their Phase Two slate with them.

While the actual panelists have yet to be revealed, they will be bringing both Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Comic-Con. In the past, Marvel has brought Joss Whedon and the entire cast of The Avengers to the event, so it wouldn't be a surprise if they did something similar again. We can probably expect Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige there, because he never met a camera he didn't like to be in front of. We'll probably get some new footage from Thor, and possibly the first glimpses at what Anthony and Joe Russo have done with the Captain America sequel. Thor: The Dark World hits theaters this year on November 8th, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier is April 4th 2014.

There are three release dates Marvel has penciled in for 2016 and 2017, and it's expected that an announcement on those will be made as part of the presentation. I'm also anticipating what they have in store for Guardians of the Galaxy, with my hope that they'll bring out the cast and announce the voices for Rocket Raccoon and Groot. My guess is one of them will be Vin Diesel.

Sony will be bringing their own Marvel movie to the floor on July 19th with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which opens on May 2nd 2014. Expected to attend are director Marc Webb, stars Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, and Dane DeHaan, along with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. So that's approximately 1/8th of the extensive principle cast? Hopefully we'll get an indicator on the role being played by Sarah Gadon, and possibly a confirmation on Felicity Jones' part.

It was Garfield's impassioned comments at Comic-Con two years ago that really won over fans who were dubious about a relatively unknown Brit actor playing Peter Parker. It's doubtful he'll need to do anything like that this time. I'm more interested in hearing what DeHaan has to say about playing Harry Osborn.

Also hitting the show floor from Sony is their Robocop reboot, with Joel Kinnaman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, and director Jose Padilha on hand. So when I'm not busy hanging on Cornish's every word then trying to find out which hotel she's staying in, I'll be hoping for a teaser trailer or something.

Sure Shots: Joel Kinnaman; Sofia Vergara; Mark Duplass

*Last fall we learned that Liam Neeson would be branching out *snort* by playing an aging hitman in Jaume Collet-Serra's upcoming film, The All Nighter. THR reports that further casting is underway ahead of a fall start date, and the next addition to the film is Robocop star, Joel Kinnaman. He'll play Neeson's son, a chauffeur who witnesses a murder and must be eliminated. It'll be up to Neeson to take out his former boss in one night in order to protect his family. Brad Inglesby (Out of the Furnance) drafted the spec script.

* While many are still drooling over her recent Machete Kills one-sheet, and I can hardly blame anyone for that, Sofia Vergara is busy moving on to other big screen projects. The Modern Family star is now joining Jason Statham in Heat, a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds film about a compulsive gambler in Las Vegas who takes it upon himself to get revenge on the mob when a friend is brutally beaten. Vergara's film choices have been sketchy at best (remember Chasing Papi??), but I like the moves she's been making lately. Heat will be directed by Simon West, who worked with Statham on The Mechanic and The Expendables 2. [Variety]

* Mark Duplass, Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), and Ted Danson have joined the indie comedy The One I Love, from first-time director Charlie McDowell. McDowell is a comedian best known for his Twitter page where he makes fun of the stupid things his female neighbors say in the apartment above him. It's so popular that it recently landed him a book deal, and now he's got a movie in the works. Let's hope he's worth all this fuss. The film, Justin Lader, has Duplass and Moss as a couple with relationship problems, with Danson as their therapist. [Deadline]

Check out Robocop's sweet ride in new set photos

More set photos from the Robocop shoot have emerged, and like the rest of them I'm sure these will spark debate. I think people saw Joel Kinnaman in the suit, which is admittedly very different than the original, and immediately assumed the film would somehow be a disaster. I don't agree with that, and considering the talented Jose Padilha is directing a very impressive cast, chances are Robocop will be one remake worth looking forward.

The latest snaps come from NewsCom, and show Robocop's futuristic motorcycle. I dig it, and along with the sleeker suit design underscores that this version of the cyborg is meant for speed, not bulk. Admit it, the original Robocop suit is pretty clunky.

Starring Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Michael Keaton, Jackie Earle Haley, Jennifer Ehle, and Michael K. Williams, Robocop opens next year on August 9th. Check out the rest of the images below....

New 'Robocop' set photos give a better look at his visor and weapons

It's amazing to me just how much email I still get about those first set photos from Robocop, and it seems to me the verdict on his new design is pretty split. So today we have a pair of new shots that will probably stir the debate up again, as they give us a fuller look at Joel Kinnaman as the cyborg hero.

These images show the Robocop suit with the full helmet and visor, which retains some similarities to the original, but also I think kinda reminds me of the Cylons from Battlestar Galactica. That's not to say it's bad, just an observation. Also, we get a look at the weapon Robocop will be using to blow away crime, which also is similar to the original. The curious thing to me are the human hands he retains, which I guess are a means of showcasing his humanity? I'm thinking it could turn out to be a plot point as the evil OmniCorp tries to sell Robocop to the public.

What do you think? Are you digging the new design? Or would you prefer something more traditional? Directed by Jose Padilha, Robocop takes over the streets on August 9th 2013.[Flickr]

Set photos reveal first look at the new 'Robocop'!

So far a lot of what we've heard about Jose Padilha's Robocop has been troubling stuff. The director himself has described the process as "hell", which, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't exactly a good thing. Early reviews of the script have pretty much trashed the sh*t out of it. All of this comes before we even got to what was eventually going to be the most scrutinized aspect: Robocop's design. Well, now we're getting some set photos which show this Robocop will be very different than the model we're used to.

The photos show star Joel Kinnaman in what is a sleeker, more aerodynamic style compared to the bulky version from Paul Verhoeven's film. It almost reminds me in some ways to Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins design, with the exception of the helmet and visor. We were promised a very different Robocop that shows more of the human side, so the second photo, which shows the suit minus the visor, is probably what we'll be seeing a lot of. You don't sign somebody like Joel Kinnaman then hide the dude's face. Just sayin'.

I'm sure the response to these shots will be mixed, but let's not forget that there will no doubt be a lot of CGI work done on it in post-production. Robocop hits theaters next year on August 9th. [Comingsoon]

Sure Shots: Kat Dennings; Joel Kinnaman; Olivia Williams

* Rest easy, folks! Kat Dennings and her dry brand of snark will be making a return for Thor: The Dark World. Dennings plays Darcy, the best friend to Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, and it wouldn't be shocking if Dennings has a larger role this time around considering her current popularity as the star of 2 Broke Girls on CBS. Thor: The Dark World opens on November 8th 2013. [Deadline]

* I've given up trying to keep track of Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups. It seems like every other day somebody new is prancing around with Christian Bale on set, to the point where I'm starting to think Malick is just calling every celebrity on his Rolodex. By now it's easier to figure out who's not in the film rather than who is. The latest addition is your future Robocop, Joel Kinnaman, playing a "rich playboy". We don't know much about the plot, other than that Bale is playing a depressed writer or something.  Imogen Poots, Natalie Portman, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Ryan O'Neal, Freida Pinto, and Teresa Palmer are co-starring. [SvD]

* Brit actress Olivia Williams(Rushmore) has joined the cast of Ten(reverted back from Breacher), the latest cop thriller from director David Ayer(Harsh Times) and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Terrence Howard, and Malin Akerman. Based on a script by Skip Woods and loosely adapted from Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, the story follows a DEA task force who robs a drug cartel for millions of dollars, only to get picked off one-by-one once they start to feel safe. Williams will play a cutthroat detective investigating the team's murders. Also, it appears Dawn Olivieri(House of Lies) may have found time to remain in the cast, after being reported to have dropped out.[THR]

Trailer Time: 'Lola Versus', starring Greta Gerwig and Joel Kinnaman

The ever luminous and always charming Greta Gerwig can normally be found making bad movies better than they have any right to be. The Arthur remake? Intolerable without her presence. Greenberg? Probably unwatchable if it wasn't for her light opposite Ben Stiller's gloom. So it's great to see her finally getting the opportunity to be the the show stopper fans like me have always known her to be ever since her "mumblecore" roots.

The trailer for Lola Versus has been released, a film which sees her as the titular character, a New York woman thrust back into the shark infested dating scene when she's suddenly dumped by her fiance(Joel Kinnaman). With the help of her best friends, including Hamish Linklater(Groove) and co-writer Zoe Lister-Jones, she tries to cope with the potential disaster that is being single at the age of 30. Oh my God! Debra Winger and Bill Pullman co-star, with Daryl Wein(Breaking Upwards) co-writing and directing.

Let's see...how do I describe my feelings towards Gerwig in this trailer? Ummm...if I could jump through the screen and give her a hug I would. That's how much. The material seems overly familiar, but she absolutely sparkles.  Lola Versus is set to open on June 8th.....

Joel Kinnaman promises a very different look to the new 'Robocop'

Unlike MGM's other rehashes pulled from their extensive library, Robocop has the most potential to be vastly different than the source material. That was part of the excitement when Jose Padilha(Elite Squad) was picked to direct, and most recently when Joel Kinnaman(The Killing) was chosen to take on the role of Alex Murphy, the man who would eventually serve and protect as the cyborg law officer. Their selection told us that this wasn't going to be your father's Robocop, and Kinnaman recently took to MTV to expound on this idea.

Paul Verhoeven's Robocop was certainly a product of the 1980s, a soldier of steel with very little humanity to speak of. He was a construct as much as anything else. But this is a new time, and science has improved greatly in the last twenty-five years, and Kinnaman says the neurological advances will be a major part of their film...

Kinnaman: "There’s a lot of neuroscience now raising the question, ‘Is all the intelligence in the human body in the brain?’ and they’re finding out that, no, it’s not like that. The body has intelligence itself, and we’re much more of an organic creature in that way. It’s not a control tower that does everything."

Even though Kinnaman isn't exactly a recognizable name or face, he's on his way there, and Robocop is an important step along the way. That may be part of the reason why this version will provide us a more human look at the character than we've previously seen...
Kinnaman:  "Robocop is going to be a lot more human… this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is Robocop… It’s not going to be [just] jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You’re going to see his eyes."

Clearly, Padilha is taking Robocop in a new direction, one that I think is going to ruffle a few feathers. To me, Robocop is one of those properties that worked in 1987 but looks silly now, so I don't think anybody should be beholden to it.

1st look photos of Greta Gerwig and Joel Kinnaman in 'Lola Versus'

As I begin to set my schedule for next month's Tribeca Film Festival, one of the movies I'm most looking forward to is Lola Versus. Mainly because it features probably my favorite actress working right now in Greta Gerwig, and an actor who is well on his way to being Hollywood's next big thing, Joel Kinnaman. Directed and co-written by Daryl Wein along with Zoe Lister-Jones, the film looks to be another thoughtful relationship comedy similar to Wein's Breaking Upwards.

The first couple of images have been unearthed of Gerwig and Kinnaman as Lola and her fiance, who break up mere weeks before they are due to be married. The film follows Lola as she attempts to find her way as a single woman rapidly approaching her 30s. The premise sounds kinda bland, but Gerwig rarely(Arthur being the exception) takes on anything simple, and frankly her presence makes every film a little bit brighter. She looks ravishing in these pics, and so does New York City which looks like it may be a character unto itself. Hamish Linklater(Groove) and Lister-Jones co-star as Lola's best friends. Debra Winger, Bill Pullman, and Jay Pharoah also make appearances.

Lola Versus will premier at Tribeca before opening on June 8th. [ThePlaylist/EW]

Prime Directive #5: 'Robocop' will hit theaters on August 9th 2013

Now that MGM's Robocop remake is in full effect, with an up 'n coming tandem in director Jose Padilha(Elite Squad) and Joel Kinnaman(The Killing) to star as Lt. Alex Murphy, the dude in the cyborg suit, it's time to start talking release dates.  The studio has settled on August 9th, 2013 as the day when Robocop will exact his own brand of justice.

That would appear to be the perfect date, right in the heart of summer and immediately making it the blockbuster event of the month. Right now it has no competition that weekend, but it come a week after the Red sequel and more from those surprisingly resilient Smurfs.

Joel Kinnaman to officially serve and protect as 'Robocop'

Well, that didn't take long. Nor did I expect it to, but it's been officially confirmed that Joel Kinnaman(The Killing) will be Robocop in Jose Padilha's upcoming remake for MGM. This will be Kinnaman's big break over here in the States, so it was a no brainer move. The offer was made to him just over a week ago.

On the verge of breaking out for the better part of a year, Kinnaman first caught the eye of many in Snabba Cash, Daniel Espionosa's slick crime thriller from a couple years ago. Both Kinnaman and Espinosa have gone on to become hot commodities. Espinosa recently directed Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in Safe House, which Kinnaman had a small role in. He also appeared in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

With Snabba Cash finally hitting American theaters this summer, it makes sense for MGM to hop on the bandwagon now.  [Deadline]

Joel Kinnaman offered the 'Robocop' remake lead

The timing couldn't be more perfect, as word is really starting to build around Joel Kinnaman after the release of the Snabba Cash II trailer, the sequel to the hit Swedish thriller that proved to be his breakout. The success of that film led him to be one of last year's fastest rising stars, with his name attached to numerous potential Hollywood franchises, although most of those never came to pass. Now he finds himself in the running for another major tentpole in MGM's upcoming reboot of Robocop.

Deadline reports that MGM has made an offer to Kinnaman to take on the title role in the film, to be directed by Brazilian filmmaker, Jose Padilha(Elite Squad).  We all know the Robocop story, don't we? Cop gets killed, his body becomes part of a special program...yadda yadda yadda...you got yourself a cyborg super pig. Peter Weller made the role iconic with the 1987 original and the (awful) 1990 sequel.

For Kinnaman, this could finally be the big time project he's been groomed for over the past year. He snagged a small role as Christer Malm in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a part that will only expand if the trilogy plays out. He was one of many named as a candidate for Steven Soderbergh's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and was set to star in Arthur & Lancelot for David Dobkin before both of those movies crashed over bloated budgets.  Expect Kinnaman to jump all over this one, giving the Robocop relaunch quite the international flavor.

Every actor on the planet in consideration for The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Ok, as much as I'm starting to despise the "offer" story, the "wishlist" story is a million times worse. If asked any studio head right now who they'd pick to star in their movie if scheduling and salary weren't an issue, the response would be the same if the film was The Expendables or All The Pretty Horses. There are very few exceptions, so when I hear names like Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Christian Bale, and Leonardo DiCaprio wishlisted for Steven Soderbergh's remake of 60s spy spoof, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, it makes me go "zzzzzzzzzzzzz....".

ThePlaylist has apparently discovered the rest of the desired names for the film, which recently we learned had Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Alexander Skarsgard, and Ryan Gosling wanted for the co-lead role of Russian spy Illya Kuryakin. This followed on the footsteps of George Clooney having to bow out due to a bad back, with the actor set to play the other lead of American agent Napoleon Solo. With Clooney's A-list power out of the picture, the need to cast a bigger star in the Kuryakin role increased. Other names include, apparently for both lead parts, Robert Pattinson, Russell Crowe, Ryan Reynolds, Jon Hamm, and Bradley Cooper. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!! Soderbergh was said to also have been looking at frequent collaborator Matt Damon, but he'll actually be shooting his directorial debut, Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses, at that same point. Jude Law is a possibility as well, having just starred in Soderbergh's Contagion. What, no Jeremy Renner?

The only thing that comes as any sort of surprise is the news that Soderbergh spoke to rising star Joel Kinnaman(The Killing, Snabba Cash) for the Kuyakin role. He apparently approached him during Comic-Con, but it's unclear if he remains a contender. Kinnaman may not be known to many right now, but his profile is set to get a boost with roles in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo  and the Russia set alien invasion flick, The Darkest Hour. If Warner Brothers is planning on this becoming a franchise, which I'm sure they are, then Kinnaman may be a solid "buy low" option right now. Yes, I'm using fantasy football terminology for Hollywood casting now. The story says Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns are already mapping out sequels, which since Soderbergh is "retiring" he won't be directing but producing. We'll see about that.

The film already has a February 2012 date set for production kick off, so expect the major casting to get wrapped up in the next few weeks if not sooner.
