First Trailer for Terrence Malick's 'Knight of Cups' with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman

Oh, how naive we were. There was a time not that long ago when many of us sat back and thought we may get two or maybe even three Terrence Malick movies in 2014, remarkable given the low output for the majority of his career. Instead we got none (unless you count Malick-produced The Better Angels, which I don't), but today has brought some unexpected news on Malick's film Knight of Cups, which stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, and Imogen Poots. Not only will it premiere as part of the Berlin Film Festival lineup next year, but out of the clear blue the first trailer has arrived.

Typical of Malick, there doesn't appear to be much of a plot but the basic logline seems to be well-represented here. Bale plays a womanizer who gives in to temptation, celebrity, and excess, while the net effect of this footage is like The Wolf of Wall Street done Malick-style. It's actually quite a refreshing change for Malick to get us out of the natural environment with beautiful twirling women and frolicking children, and into something more modern and contemporary.

While there's still no release date we can expect to see Knight of Cups in 2015.

Review: Terrence Malick-Produced 'The Better Angels' with Jason Clarke and Brit Marling

The term "Malickian" is thrown around a lot to describe filmmakers who seem to be aping the elegant, naturalist style of Terrence Malick, but few of these directors actually can say they've worked with the man. The same can't be said of Malick protégé A.J. Edwards, who has worked on The Tree of Life, To the Wonder, The New World, and more. And it's clear that he admires his mentor, enough that his quiet, slow-moving Abraham Lincoln coming-of-age story The Better Angels seems to be less about our President's childhood, and more about paying homage to Malick.

We've seen a few Lincoln movies lately, each taking vastly different approaches to humanizing the man. Spielberg's massive ensemble film depicted Lincoln in the political fight of his life, while "Honest" Abe was satirized in the historical horror comedy Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The Better Angels is an attempt to humanize him further by offering a sober portrayal of his tough upbringing in the Indiana backwoods. Set in 1817, a young Lincoln (Braydon Denney, newcomer) basks in the glow of his adoring mother (Brit Marling) while enduring his harsh, abusive father (Jason Clarke). If that sounds like the synopsis for Malick's The Tree of Life, well you're right, and clearly Edwards was influenced by the film in more ways than one. There's little story to speak of here as Edwards puts the emphasis on sweeping, ethereal atmospherics. Edwards has a similar awe of nature's majesty and focus on these things: water trickling down a river, dust floating gracefully in the sunlight, wind-swept forests. If Malick wasn't on board as a producer The Better Angels would almost come to resemble a parody of the man's directorial tropes. Well, it still kind of is but unintentionally so.

There's a reason why so many emulate Malick and it's because the images he creates are truly memorable, and The Better Angels looks beautiful and vivid, even in soft black & white tones. Edwards wants you to get swept up in the surreal cinematography and it's hard not to. It serves as a distraction from the lack of any narrative momentum. Lincoln barely utters a word throughout and is basically a satellite character in his own story, soaking up the influences of those around him. But it's hard to get a sense of who Lincoln is when the structure is so fragile that we rarely see the repercussions of anything. When milk sickness takes his mother's life, Lincoln barely registers a reaction before we're ushered into the next scene. Instead we see his father becoming sterner, angrier, before finally going out and bringing home another wife (Diane Kruger) who becomes one of Lincoln's strongest confidantes. Hushed voice-over, another Malick staple, informs us how to perceive Lincoln, suggesting the greatness growing within him, but the one we actually see is aloof and unsure.

Despite its obvious problems, The Better Angels is at least a gallant effort to tell a different kind of Lincoln story. It doesn't attempt to idolize the man, but to chart the factors in his life that built him into one of our most accomplished Presidents. The effort is worthy even if the execution falls way short. Edwards is obviously a talented filmmaker to emulate Malick to such an indistinguishable degree, but The Better Angels would have been better served with a more original approach.

New Trailer from Terrence Malick-Produced 'The Better Angels' Show's Lincoln's Childhood

What would it look like if Terrence Malick wanted to tell the story of Abraham Lincoln? It would probably look something like this trailer for The Better Angels, which tells of our 16th President's childhood growing up in Indiana. The film is directed by A.J. Edwards with Malick on board as a producer, and it's clear how deep his influence runs as it looks like a black-and-white version of The Tree of Life.

Braydon Denney plays Lincoln as a boy, with Jason Clarke and Brit Marling as his parents, along with Diane Kruger as another figure who had a heavy influence on the man he would eventually become. Others have tried to emulate Malick but the lyrical, dream-like quality here is impressive, and it's safe to say this will be unlike any other Lincoln film we've seen. The Better Angels opens November 7th. Here's the trailer and full synopsis.

At an isolated log cabin in the harsh wilderness of Indiana circa 1817, the rhythms of love, tragedy, and the daily hardships of life on the developing frontier shaped one of our nation’s greatest heroes: Abraham Lincoln. Using glorious black and white cinematography to conjure an America where the land was raw, The Better Angels sheds new light on the formative years of the future president and the two women who molded him into one of the most revered men in American history. Based on 19th-century interviews with Lincoln’s family members, The Better Angels is a beautiful, insightful, and brilliantly composed feature debut from producer Terrence Malick’s longtime protégé, A.J. Edwards.

New Trailer for Terrence Malick-Produced Abe Lincoln Drama 'The Better Angels'

There was a point not too long ago when it looked like 2014 would see the arrival of at least two Terrence Malick movies, Knight of Cups and his untitled music scene drama. Turns out we were being all hopeful and blinky-eyed on that score as the only Malick project coming out is The Better Angels, which he merely produced for his longtime collaborator, A.J. Edwards to direct.

A new trailer for the film has been released and you can see Malick's influence on Edwards' style first and foremost. A historical coming of age drama, The Better Angels depicts Abraham Lincoln's tough Indiana upbringing that helped shape him into one of our most important Presidents. Braydon Denney takes on the role of honest Abe, with Brit Marling, Diane Kruger, Wes Bentley, and Jason Clarke playing his greatest influences.

The Better Angels didn't get the strongest reviews when it played at Sundance earlier this year, but that could change when it opens on November 7th.

Michael Shannon Boards 'Freeheld'; Adele Exarchopoulos in 'Bastille Day' ; Cate Blanchett Narrates 'Voyage of Time'

* Ellen Page's gay rights drama, Freeheld, has just added Michael Shannon to a cast that already includes Julianne Moore and Zach Galifianakis. Directed by Peter Sollett, the film tells the true story of a gay police woman diagnosed with a terminal illness who must fight to ensure her pension passes to her partner. No word on Shannon's role but the cast and subject matter alone make this project a pretty big deal.

* Blue is the Warmest Color's Adele Exarchopoulos is starting to see the results of her success. She's taken a role in Sean Penn's latest directorial effort, The Last Face, and now she's boarding action flick, Bastille Day, starring Idris Elba. Coming aboard to replace the departed Pierre Morel as director is James Watkins (The Woman in Black), which should amount to quite a change in approach. Anyway, Elba plays a washed-up CIA agent with Exarchopoulos likely as the artist accused of a terrorist attack in the Paris metro.

* Terrence Malick's forever-developing documentary, Voyage of Time, has long had Brad Pitt attached to narrate. And it made sense considering the director shot much of it while filming The Tree of Life, and is something he calls "a celebration of the earth, displaying the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse.” After all this time the film still isn't coming out until 2016, with two versions of differing length, and now we know Cate Blanchett will be joining Pitt as narrator. She'll apparently be replacing Emma Thompson, who had been attached previously. [ScreenDaily]

First official look at Terrence Malick's 'Knight of Cups' with Christian Bale and Natalie Portman

If the response to Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life was mixed, the reviews for his follow-up To the Wonder were absolutely brutal. The chief complaint, and one that I wholeheartedly subscribe to, is that the film felt derivative and indulgent, like a filmmaker going back to an empty creative well. It barely made a blip on the box office radar, and almost certainly won't end up on the Best Picture shortlist next year.

Not that it matters much, as the suddenly-prolific Malick has two films coming up, and the first one we're getting an official look at is Knight of Cups. Set photos have revealed a virtual "who's who" of Hollywood, although with Malick's editing tendencies who knows if any of them will make the final cut. The first image reveals stars Christian Bale and Natalie Portman and....*shocker*...they're prancing along the beach while the waves come in. Based on this photo alone it looks like we're in for more of the same from Malick, but we won't know for sure until debut footage unspools at Cannes. Vaguely described as a story about "temptation, celebrity, and excess", set photos have revealed Cate Blanchett, Isabel Lucas, Antonio Banderas, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer, Ryan O'Neal, Jason Clarke, and Joel Kinnaman at different points, but again, let's wait and see if any of them actually turn up in the finished product.

As for Malick's other untitled film formerly known as Lawless, it's set in the Texas music industry and that's pretty much all we know about it other than the cast. Bale, Blanchett, and Portman will be joined by Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Benicio Del Toro, Holly Hunter, Val Kilmer and Berenice Marlohe. [THR]

Review: 'To the Wonder' directed by Terrence Malick

There was a time when Terrence Malick made us wait years, sometimes decades, for one of his films to hit theaters. They became something of an event unto themselves, sometimes producing elegantly-composed gems like Badlands, Days of Heaven, and at least in this critic's opinion, The New World. Suddenly on a prolific streak, it's been less than two years between spiritual, meditative The Tree of Life and his latest film, To the Wonder, but he may have been better off letting this one simmer for a while longer.

When Malick is on the top of his game, his work is beyond reproach, the gorgeous cinematography lending weight and credence to what are absorbing ruminations on faith, love, and family. However, when his focus is less certain you get the utter randomness of To the Wonder, an indulgent flight of fancy so abstract and vague it's likely to blow away during one of Olga Kurylenko's numerous dancing scenes. That seems to have become the new standard for Malick's choice of lead female characters; how do they look prancing along wind-swept hills while the sun rains down on them from on high? Without any real soul or depth, for all intents and purposes Malick might as well be making a really elaborate perfume commercial.

Taking us from Paris and the Mont St. Michel in France to the Rockwellian wheat fields of Oklahoma, To the Wonder explores the fading relationship between a boring American geologist and the French single-mother he falls in love. Ben Affleck wanders around in a close-mouthed stupor as Neil, who we meet as he's sweeping through France with Marina, a single mother who seems to be utterly in love with life. The two quickly fall for one another, and we see them in the throes of their passion and ecstasy. This is what Malick really wants to show us, two gorgeous people in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and his camera eats up every dreamy moment. Poetic internal narratives occasionally spill forth, but mostly the film unfolds wordlessly, hoping that mood and the suggestive score will be enough.

Malick's approach works well enough until we're expected to follow the couple's mysterious descent into uncertainty. Leaving France for the comparative blandness of Neil's home in Oklahoma, it isn't long before Marina recognizes that a poor dinner in Paris always beats lunch at a Sonic drive-thru. She has no roots in America, and can't relate to ordinary farmer folk with their boring lives. Aimless, with no friends to lean on for support, Marina and her daughter grow unhappy quickly. The dancing stops, replaced by brooding and fights we're not allowed in on. When she ultimately leaves him, Neil takes up with an old flame played by Rachel McAdams. This is probably the most needless and baffling sequence of all, and would have made more sense if Malick had thrown in a few dinosaurs or exploding planets. Rachel McAdams turns up for a cup of coffee as Neil's former flame, and the two reconnect while doing nothing other than staring at buffalo all day. Then she just ups and disappears without so much as a "by your leave".

Quickly taking on the tenor of a Malick spoof, the film reaches ridiculous lows with the side story of a priest who is desperately trying to regain his faith. Javier Bardem is a terrific actor who can say more with his eyes than most can with a thousand words, but not even he can make sense of his character's meaningless ramblings. As we see him skulking around the poorest neighborhoods trying to shepherd his flock of sheep, it becomes obvious that his character serves no purpose.

Malick may be trying to draw some sort of parallel between people who are on shaky ground in matters of love and faith, but his characters are so thin that it's impossible to care. None of them feel real enough to matter. To the Wonder resembles the director going to the well once too often, incorrectly assuming that what has worked for him in the past will always be sufficient.

New trailer and clip from Terrence Malick's 'To the Wonder'

We're past the point of seeing Terrence Malick as some recluse who pops his head out every twenty years or so, drops a new film on us, then goes back into hiding. The guy is hanging out at film festivals and releasing new films at the rate of one every two years or so. Nobody's ever going to confuse him with Takashi Miike, but Malick's prolific streak has been hugely exciting to watch.

A new trailer for his sixth film, To the Wonder, has been released and it again shows us the gorgeous cinematography by The Tree of Life's Emmanuelle Lubezki. Ben Affleck and Olga Kurylenko star as a couple who meet and fall in love while in France, returning to his hometown in Oklahoma where things don't go quite as smoothly. Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem co-star, and it looks like another poetic and heartfelt piece by Malick.

Check out the trailer below, along with a new clip that gives a better sense of the film's mood. To the Wonder opens on April 12th.

Three new posters for Terrence Malick's 'To the Wonder'

If you saw the recent trailer for Terrence Malick's To the Wonder, it probably felt pretty familiar. Clearly he's aiming squarely at those who fell in love with The Tree of Life last year, sweeping them up in the same ambitious swirl of emotions for a romance drama starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, and Javier Bardem. The film caused quite a split amongst those who saw it in Venice and Toronto. Nothing new for a Malick film, really.

A handful of new French posters have been revealed before it hits theaters in the U.K. in February. We'll have to wait until April 12th for it to open in the U.S. Check 'em out below....[Metro]

Breathtaking first trailer for Terrence Malick's 'To the Wonder' with Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams

This may come as a shock but there was a good deal of controversy surrounding a Terrence Malick movie. Yeah, go figure. Just as his The Tree of Life was met with polarizing reception on the festival circuit, Malick's To the Wonder was....well, let's just say it was "harshly received" in Venice. Par for the course, but if you loved his last film and appreciate Malick's sweeping ruminations on love and spirituality, then To the Wonder is probably going to be high on your must-see list.

Other than a handful of still photos, we've seen next to nothing from To the Wonder, but now the first trailer has been unveiled, and if you loved Emmanuel Lubezki's poetic cinematography in The Tree of Life then prepare for a film that looks just as gorgeous. Ben Affleck stars as a man who returns to his Oklahoma home with his new European bride(Olga Kurylenko), only to reconnect with his childhood sweetheart played by Rachel McAdams. Javier Bardem, who received the bulk of audience scorn, turns up as a priest suffering from a crisis of faith.

Entrancing imagery abounds, and the sheer majesty of that score simply can't be overstated. Malick pumped this one out pretty quickly, for him anyway, but he doesn't appear to have let up on the emotional throttle in the least. To the Wonder opens April 12th....[The Guardian]

Michael Fassbender added to Terrence Malick's upcoming music industry drama

That busy beaver Terrence Malick just recently wrapped up filming on Knight of Cups, the first of two films he had set for this year. The other one, formerly known as Lawless before he let John Hillcoat use the title, stars much of the same cast including Christian Bale, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Haley Bennett, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, and the newly added Holly Hunter. But that's hardly enough superstar talent, and the latest to be spotted on set is none other than the red hot Michael Fassbender.

Fassbender was captured in this fuzzy image, opposite Ryan Gosling no less. How's that for a duo, ladies? The film is set against the backdrop of Austin's music industry(as we saw in those early test shots), and follows a pair of intersecting love triangles full of sexual obsession and betrayal.  It's unclear just how big his role will be, or if he'll share any screen time with Portman, who he'll be joining later in Lynne Ramsay's western, Jane Got a Gun.

Shooting should be wrapped up on Steve McQueen's Twelve Years a Slave, so we'll likely see Fassbender in that next. Then he'll done the big bucket helmet of Magneto for X-men: Days of Future Past. [BrownGirlsLoveFassy]

Brit Marling and West Bentley join Terrence Malick-produced 'The Green Blade Rises'

Here's hoping you aren't sick of Abraham Lincoln movies yet. After the ridiculous Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Stephen Spielberg's Lincoln, there's still one more on the way, and this one could be looked upon as sortof an origin story to both of those flicks.

The Green Blade Rises may sound like an episode of Thundercats or something but it's actually the latest film to tackle the life of this country's 16th President. Produced by Terrence Malick and directed by his protege, A.J. Edwards, the film will detail Lincoln's childhood and upbringing that helped mold him into one of our greatest leaders. The latest to join the cast are indie fave Brit Marling(Sound of My Voice) and Wes Bentley, who just finished filming Malick's Knight of Cups. What a career turnaround he's made lately, eh? Diane Kruger is set to play Lincoln's stepmother, while Jason Clarke(Lawless) is Tom Lincoln, his father. Lincoln's birth mother will be played by Marling, with Bentley as one of his schoolteachers.

Filming is set to begin this fall, so hopefully we'll find out who will play young Lincoln soon.

Sure Shots: Kat Dennings; Joel Kinnaman; Olivia Williams

* Rest easy, folks! Kat Dennings and her dry brand of snark will be making a return for Thor: The Dark World. Dennings plays Darcy, the best friend to Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, and it wouldn't be shocking if Dennings has a larger role this time around considering her current popularity as the star of 2 Broke Girls on CBS. Thor: The Dark World opens on November 8th 2013. [Deadline]

* I've given up trying to keep track of Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups. It seems like every other day somebody new is prancing around with Christian Bale on set, to the point where I'm starting to think Malick is just calling every celebrity on his Rolodex. By now it's easier to figure out who's not in the film rather than who is. The latest addition is your future Robocop, Joel Kinnaman, playing a "rich playboy". We don't know much about the plot, other than that Bale is playing a depressed writer or something.  Imogen Poots, Natalie Portman, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Ryan O'Neal, Freida Pinto, and Teresa Palmer are co-starring. [SvD]

* Brit actress Olivia Williams(Rushmore) has joined the cast of Ten(reverted back from Breacher), the latest cop thriller from director David Ayer(Harsh Times) and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Terrence Howard, and Malin Akerman. Based on a script by Skip Woods and loosely adapted from Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, the story follows a DEA task force who robs a drug cartel for millions of dollars, only to get picked off one-by-one once they start to feel safe. Williams will play a cutthroat detective investigating the team's murders. Also, it appears Dawn Olivieri(House of Lies) may have found time to remain in the cast, after being reported to have dropped out.[THR]

Sure Shots: Richard Jenkins; Diane Kruger; Emma Roberts

* Of the two White House-set thrillers, Roland Emmerich's White House Down looks the stronger by far. And now it's getting even stronger with the addition of vaunted character actor, Richard Jenkins(The Visitor). He'll play the Speaker of the House, trailing behind the VP in the Presidential line of succession. Something tells me that will come into play. Channing Tatum will come to the rescue as a Secret Service agent when terrorists attempt to take the President hostage. Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and James Woods star. [Variety]

* The very German Diane Kruger as a southern belle? Ok, sure. We'll go with that. She'll play Abraham Lincoln's step-mother, Sarah Bush Lincoln, in Green Blade Rising. While we still don't know who will write the script or direct, we do know Terrence Malick is producing, which makes it worth keeping a close watch on. Sarah Lincoln was a crucial figure in setting Abe on his path to becoming the man he grew up to be, coming into his life when he was 10 years old, and teaching him how to read. [Movie Nation]

* Emma Roberts(Scream 4) and Kathryn Hahn(Wanderlust) have joined Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston in the drug-fueled comedy, We're The Millers.  Directed by Rawson Thurber, the story centers on a low level drug dealer who attempts to transport 1400 pounds of marijuana across the border by creating a fake family going on a road trip. Jennifer Aniston is playing his wife, with Roberts as a troubled girl who poses as their daughter, and Hahn as the wife of a DEA agent. Nick Offerman co-stars, along with a cameo by Ed Helms. Terrence Malick's upcoming romance gets a title and 'R' rating

It's become a little overwhelming trying to keep track of all the projects Terrence Malick has headed our way. That's pretty remarkable considering how we used to wait years for him to complete another film, just like we waited forever for The Tree of Life last year. We know just this year alone Malick will be filming the music industry drama, formerly titled Lawless, and he also has Knight of Cups planned. There was one more untitled romance film that we actually heard about first, with Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Peet, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Chastain and Barry Pepper all set to star. Now that incredible sounding film not only has a title, but we also have a clue just how intense it may be.

To The Wonder is the title of Malick's film according to The Classifications and Rating Administration. The story has Affleck as a philanderer who, feeling at loose ends, travels to Paris and hooks up with a hot European woman(Kurylenko). Returning home to Oklahoma, he marries the European woman partly out of Visa concerns, but when the relationship starts to fail he rekindles a romance with a hometown girl(McAdams) that he shares a history with.  The film has been granted an 'R' rating for "some sexuality/nudity".

The rating is a good sign that the film is close to being completed, but as we all know from Malick's history, he tends to get a little obsessive in the editing process. Still, there's an outside shot we'll see this later in the year, or possibly early in 2013. [TheFilmStage]

*UPDATE* 'The Wettest County' now officially titled 'Lawless'; What will Terrence Malick do?

*Update* Turns out, Terrence Malick gave The Wettest County producers his seal of approval to change the title to Lawless, even though he had a film with the same name. So I guess Malick's film is now untitled? [EW]  The original story is below...

This has been in the works for awhile now, but John Hillcoat's adaptation of The Wettest County in the World will now be titled Lawless. If that title sounds familiar, it's because Terrence Malick has been using it for one of his two films slated to shoot later this year. So either he's going to change it, or we're going to have a lot of confused folks.  Then again, Malick seems like the type who might stick to his guns on this.

The title change is being reflected on the film's press site and Facebook page, so we may see an official announcement made soon. The Prohibition era film features a script by Nick Cave, and stars Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Dane DeHaan, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska.  It's expected to hit theaters on August 31st 2012. Official logline for Terrence Malick's 'Lawless' revealed!

We're finally starting to learn more about the films that have so rapidly changed Terrence Malick from a guy who makes one movie every ten years, to one who now has a handful just around the corner. The suddenly prolific director has two lined up to shoot this year, featuring mostly the same cast, and as usual covered by the thickest blanket of secrecy this side of the CIA. Last year we caught footage of Malick shooting some footage for Lawless at the Austin City Limits music festival, learning that the film would in some way be centered on the music industry. Now an official logline from production company FilmNation reveals another facet of the story.

“Two intersecting love triangles. It is a story of sexual obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas.”

Set in Austin? Does that mean when filming officially kicks off later this year Malick will be returning to the Austin City Limits festival? It seems likely, as it was later revealed what was shot before was merely pre-production work, with the real thing set to kick off in September, according to one of the film's stars, Rooney Mara. She'll be featured with an amazing cast including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, and Haley Bennett. All those folks walking around Austin City Limits when it begins this October? Can I get a ticket now?

As for Malick's other film, Knight of Cups, it's slated to shoot this summer. Earlier this month I speculated that there is so much crossover between the casts one would have to conclude the two movies are connected somehow. While that hasn't been confirmed, I'm sticking to that theory. Whatever the case, this is Malick doing something we haven't really seen from him before, and that's reason enough to get excited. Terrence Malick adds Natalie Portman to 'Lawless' and 'Knight of Cups'

Is it possible that the two films Terrence Malick has upcoming will be more connected than he's previously let on? The director, who usually takes years between projects, has three films either completed or set to begin shooting this year. The one we know is finished is his romance film with Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams. The other two, Lawless and Knight of Cups, feature a lot of crossover in their casts, with Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett set to star in both. You can add one more powerhouse name to that list, as Deadline reports Natalie Portman will be featured in both as well.

Let's start with Knight of Cups, which will shoot first this summer. We know practically nothing about it, except that Bale, Blanchett, Portman, and Isabel Lucas(Immortals) will star.

And then there's Lawless, which we've seen numerous pre-production images from already, taken during the Austin City Limits music festival. While details are slim, the story appears to have something to do with a douchebag record exec, played by Bale. Portman will join the rest of the insanely talented cast that includes Blanchett, Ryan Gosling(!), Haley Bennett, and Rooney Mara(!!). Does it really matter what the film is about with a cast like that? Probably not.

I don't know who kicked Malick in the pants and got him working this fast all of a sudden, but that guy deserves a drink on the house.

Terrence Malick shooting two films in 2012, both with Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett

Remember last month when Terrence Malick ransacked that music festival in Austin and appeared to be filming some sort of film centered on the music industry? Turns out he was, and now we know that film is titled Lawless, and will be one of two films he'll shoot back-to-back in 2012, both starring Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale. Wowsers.

Lawless does indeed star Bale as those images told us, playing some sort of a-hole record producer. Haley Bennett is a part of the cast as well, but alongside Blanchett check out these other two additions: Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara. Say wha!!? This isn't the first time we've heard about Gosling possibly having a role as it was first mentioned by Nicolas Winding Refn back in August. Variety reports that the the film is in pre-production, which means that is what was going on at the Austin City Limits festival when Bale was glad handing a bunch of artists.

The second film is Knight of Cups, and there's precious few details on it, except that it will star Bale, Blanchett, and Isabel Lucas(Clash of the Titans).

Both films are being shopped to buyers at the American Film Market right now, so this makes what...four films Malick has on the way? How amazing is that? [Variety]

Photos and video from Terrence Malick mystery film shoot with Christian Bale

You know me, I hate posting set photos. They're boring, rarely show anything of worth, and when they do it's basically a spoiler. How sick are you of the daily avalance of photos of the Batmobile from the set of The Dark Knight Rises? How many times can you see Henry Cavill stare blankly in his unfinished Superman costume on the Man of Steel set? What's the point? But this on the other hand is something I can work with. Over the weekend, reclusive filmmaker Terrence Malick was spotted with Christian Bale filming at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. While groups like Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes performed(with Bale on stage for a bit), Malick was shooting what appears to be that mystery film with Bale we've been hearing about for awhile now. So does this mean it's a musical?

Hard to say, because details on any Malick film are always so hard to come by. If you think they run a tight ship on the set of Prometheus, they got nothin' on a Malick shoot. So that's what makes all these images so cool, because we're getting a glimpse at the man in action. Although I have to wonder about him going out in the open like this. Kinda leads me to believe that whatever this film is, and by the look of things it'll clearly be set in the music industry, it may be something a bit more mainstream than usual.
